Just ahead on Eyewitness News at noon, a line of people paying respects to Richard Nixon just goes on and on. We'll have a live report from the Nixon Library. Yes, we're starting where we're not landing head injuries because we go through this story every year and it's nothing funny. But it is there something kind of funny when the air is kind of low, when you when the chair is low and you just. Well, bless me, everyone. Thanks for joining us. I'm Beth Scott, as you saw in that clip. I'm Marty Bass. We'll be back with all the day's news and the complete AccuWeather forecast. Please do stay with us for Eyewitness News at noon. All right. Americans continue flocking to the Richard Nixon Library to pay their final respects. We'll have a live report from the Nixon Library in a moment. But first, Howard County firefighters and hazardous materials crews are on the scene of a two alarm fire at W.R. Grace on Route 32. The building has been evacuated and Route 32 is closed in the area. We'll have more information as it becomes available. Now out of the Nixon Library, a library in Yorba Linda, California. Mourners have been waiting for hours in the rain to walk past the flag draped coffin containing the former president. Library officials say some 30,000 people have said their final goodbyes so far. CNN's Charles Zewe is now standing by in California with a live report. Final preparations are underway at this hour for the funeral this afternoon of the late President Richard Nixon. Inside the Nixon Library at this very moment, mourners continue to file past his casket in what has been a phenomenal outpouring of public support for the late president. At its peak, the line outside the Richard Nixon Library stretched for three miles as mourners waited up to eight hours to get a glimpse of the former president's casket.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136699/file/253406#t=97.29,222.87"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136699/file/253406/transcript/71552/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I just think that everybody should have the opportunity to come through here and just experience this part of history. Nixon's late afternoon funeral will be attended by every living president and delegations from at least 55 countries. Longtime Nixon friend, the Reverend Billy Graham will preside over the ceremonies that will cap an official day of mourning by closed federal offices and the financial markets following the funeral. Nixon will be buried alongside his wife, Pat, and only feet from the white clapboard house where he was born 81 years ago. President Clinton, in a eulogy prepared for this afternoon's funeral, will say that Richard Nixon should be judged by not only his accomplishments, but his mistakes as well. Today, Obama Johannesburg's airport injured 18 people. Those arrested included a policeman and members of an extreme right wing movement. Well, it's been three years since the Gulf War ended, but for Colonel Herbert Smith of Frederick County and 16,000 other veterans, it may never end. The soldiers are suffering from joint pain, fatigue, dizziness and nausea, which they believe as a result of their service in the Gulf. The cause is unknown, but today, doctors and veterans start a two day workshop at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda in hopes of isolating a cause and establishing further research. Local fire crews were busy early this morning fighting two house fires. The first in Baltimore City, started about 3 a.m. in the 2200 block of Mount Royal Terrace. Three children were taken to University Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Investigators say the fire is suspicious. Then about two hours later, Baltimore County firefighters responded to a one alarm house fire on Stillwater Road in Essex that sent five adults and one child to local hospitals. The cause of the fires and its origins are still under investigation. All of the injured are in either serious or stable condition. They're asking the mayor to declare a health care crisis and remove Elias Dorsey, assistant commissioner of health. The group says he's not getting the job done. The mayor's office responds by saying they're all working hard on the battle against Aids. And they cite the General Assembly's passage of the needle exchange program recently and also that the city spent nearly $12 million on the Aids problem. A Baltimore City school is celebrating a first today. This summer, Robert Coleman Elementary School will become the first school in the state to implement a pilot program for year round schooling. The students and teachers held a pep rally today to hand out information to the community and to show their enthusiasm for a new idea. The new idea, of course, will be implemented next school year. And this is what some of them had to say. We are assuming that this will be a better way to deliver instruction to our children if they go to school for 45 days and then they're off for 15. But of the 15 days that they were all we will have what we call intersession school. But that means you have to sacrifice just a little bit more of your personal time. But in the long run, it's wonderful for the children because in the summertime, we keep them off the street. It'll be longer. They'll get more instruction and it will be more advanced for them. So I think it's a wonderful concept. Other jurisdictions are still studying year around schooling and a local landmark is getting ready to leave. We're probably talking from, let's say, initially maybe a year away in New York to maybe and this is only tentative, maybe three, four years in a yard period, depending on the funds that come in and what is really needed and has to be done. You know, that started to sound like a plea for funds to make things go faster. It was and comes in advance of an actual local and national campaign. And we will get to your weather forecast in a minute, but we now have a live report from that hazmat situation going on in Howard County, Route 32. The W our Grace Company. Our Melissa Sander is standing by live. Melissa. Well, this is the corporate laboratories, the lab, the corporate headquarters of W.R. Grace, where they do the research, the testing. And it sounds like at this point, it was a small fire situation that's just produced a big event. You can see with all the trucks around me. Hazmat is on the scene, as you mentioned, fire trucks from counties all around. It's a tool armor. But what happened is a fire in one room, one laboratory in a building back there, which you cannot see that caused this place to be evacuated. We'll have to do further investigation to find that out. The sprinklers came on, put out the fire. But there was a lot of concern about the possible enlargement of the fire to ignite other organic solvents that were in the area and tanks. Apparently that did not occur, fortunately. So nobody was injured here at the W.R. Grace Company. And all these fire trucks that you see around here are on standby. None of the other flambeaux did catch fire. Route 32 was cut off for a couple of miles around here, this Clarksville area, for a while. And that will be reopened shortly. This is Route 32, as you can see right here. But we do have two centers of low pressure that will immediately take over our weather and actually steer us toward a big change for the weekend. First off, it's this area of low pressure that is actually pulling a rather strong front toward our way. And there's been significant thunderstorm activity and deadly tornado activity around Lafayette, Indiana, in association with this rather strong cold front as it presses through the Ohio Valley and moves toward our way. But Fay, who maintains his confession was coerced, will most likely have to face the punishment. Now, one Singapore minister says politically there's just nothing else that can be done right. And topping today's Noon Health Watch, warmer weather means yardwork for many of us. But how do you stay safe when you're using lawnmowers and those weed whackers and that other machinery? Joining us in our Doctors House Call segment now is Dr. Keith Siegelman. He's a hand surgeon at Union Memorial Hospital. Hi. Nice to see you again. Under these circumstances, you see a lot of injuries this time of year, right? Absolutely. What kind of we talking about? Well, most of the lawnmower injuries we see, unfortunately, are people trying to unclog their lawn mowers. And with the newer lawn mowers, they sort of have catches that will prevent the blade from turning when someone releases it. But the older ones don't. And unfortunately, people use the most readily available object to unclog it, which is their hand.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136699/file/253406#t=1260.81,1354.28"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136699/file/253406/transcript/71552/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And what happens is oftentimes, as they lose fingertips or even more than that, parts of their hands. And unfortunately, the injuries sustained isn't like a clean injury. And we do a lot of plantation surgery at Union Mall. But with this kind of injury, most of the time you can't do it for two. We've done stories on that as well, right? Yeah, absolutely. There's a lot of feet injury and what the mistake people make when they're lawn mowing is, number one, not to wear heavy shoes that will protect them if they do fall. Also, they like to mow when it's wet. And when you do that, you slip underneath the mower and that injures it. So we're heavy shoes. This is a good time to talk about some of the guidelines so people can avoid. You're a nice person to avoid seeing you at you. Memorial hospitals for repair. What are the guidelines we should keep in mind this summer? I think the most important guideline that we see is probably watching out for children. And unfortunately, they are the real victims in this whole process. And last year, we had a terrible child who lost nine fingertips when they slipped underneath the writing more, I think I interviewed that year. And there's there's very many children that this happens to. And we have several children right now with feet and hand injuries where this has happened. So keep children away from the lawn mower and make sure they're someplace else safe while you're cutting the lawn. Absolutely. Something else? Do not ever try and unclog the mower while it's turning. And never use your hand while you're trying to do that. If the if the more does get clogged, turn it off. Let it completely stop.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136699/file/253406#t=1355.51,1433.39"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136699/file/253406/transcript/71552/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And then use something else besides your hand to unclog it. Heavy thunderstorms this afternoon certainly didn't help the situation as rescuers worked to shore up the trench and free the worker. Melissa Sander, who has been with us all afternoon and joined just a few moments ago, continuous now her live report on rescue efforts and West friendship in Howard County Melissa. Hi again. As we were just telling folks a few moments ago, this 21 year old construction worker who has been trapped since noontime in a 15 foot deep trench alongside of this house where he was doing some waterproofing work. This man is alert. He is conscious. We are told that he is in stable condition. And we right now, we are watching as rescue workers are trying to pull him out. Rain did delay the scores of rescue workers here, spending the whole afternoon securing the trench so they could pull him out safely without any further caves. And let's go ahead and show you what happened this afternoon, because he was only one of five construction workers on the scene who was in the trench around noontime. All right. We were going to go to some tape, but it looks like the construction workers here on the scene, or rather the rescue workers keep motioning that they're getting ready to hoist this construction worker up out of the trench where he has been stuck. He is, by the way, buried up to his waist. Initially, when he was working the trench and the cave in started, he was buried in dirt up above his kneecaps. And as his coworkers tried to pull him out and then rescue workers arrived on the scene and tried to pull him out, More dirt caved in and covered up to his waist, making it impossible, really, for him to pull himself out or push himself out.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136699/file/253406#t=1856.53,1961.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136699/file/253406/transcript/71552/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And the rescue workers have been very leery. You might think, why not just go in and pull him out? They're leery that yet more dirt would cave in and cover the man over entirely or even cover over a rescue worker. It looks indeed like they are they are getting much closer to pulling out this 21 year old man whose name we still have not been given because police have been trying all day long to contact his family Melissa. Yes. Can you hear me all right? Has the man indicated in any way that he's in pain down there? You know, I asked that others they're yelling nice and slow right now. I asked that and he's been talking all afternoon with a female rescue worker who's been a very calming, soothing tones, trying to keep him relaxed. They've been checking his blood pressure and evidently his vital signs have been fine. That's what we have been told. I cannot call over one particular rescue worker to come tell me if there's any update, if you'll stand by for one moment. Excuse me. Is he all right? He is all right right now. Okay. We are told that, yes, his vital signs are still good. And you can see there this one man is motioning to pull him up. They are slowly pulling him up. He has been alert and talking all afternoon, as I said. They are having extreme difficulty pulling this guy out of this trench. No doubt the rain that you mentioned earlier, it did slow them up because they had to bring in, as I understand, pumps. And that is why it's now been a little more than six hours that this man is still trapped in this trench. Now, this is an interesting point we should bring up, that rescue workers tell us that there were no signs of thorough, proper shoring. And what that is, is it's wood of it's a it's like a box that's designed around the construction workers in a ditch to make sure that dirt doesn't cave in. It's a it's a whole setup and it's mandated by OSHA law. We've been told that OSHA has been contacted to investigate what happened here and whether this trench was or was not properly secure to protect the construction workers. I did try to talk with one man with the construction company, and he would not make any comment. It does look like they're getting a lot closer and that's why we're keeping you folks with us watching. While most, of course, will get involved in the investigation. OSHA, I believe you mentioned also now. But of course, the main thing is to get him out as quickly and safely as possible. Exactly. And supporting him, I guess, while trying to to hoist him out without causing a further erosion of the ground under him is the biggest problem. They have him. They have. It looks like they just pulled out. They didn't hoist him quite as high as we thought. So it's a little confusing looking from here. But I see they have him on a stretcher. Sure. And we are guessing at this point it would be shock trauma. Sir, Would they be taking him to shock trauma? Yes. Yes, yes, yes, that is true. He will. In fact, a shock trauma has been alerted. So he will be going there? Yes. Okay. Then then when you and I are getting the same information, because at a time like this, it's a little confusing. Again, we can't give his name, but he is a 21 year old construction worker and police are trying to identify his family to let them know what has been freed. He is free now. He was just pulled out as we were speaking. It was hard to tell because we expected them to hoist him up a little higher than they did. So what we did was we put a line down to him, took the weight off the victim. That way we could dig at the same time and we didn't have to hold the victim up. So that's what took so long. In this edition, surgeon Paul Leanne talks about early detection of breast cancer. Recently, there has been conflicting information about the need for mammography in women under 50. The fact is 20% of all breast cancers occur in women under 50. Although the density of breast tissue varies widely, the breasts of a younger woman may be more dense, making it difficult to diagnose a developing cancer. But survival and cure rates increase dramatically for women of all ages with early detection. The American Cancer Society recommends mammography at least every two years for women age 40 to 49 and yearly for women 50 and older. Early detection is the best defense against breast cancer. And right now, mammography is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most curable stage. Lisa, friends and former foes, Republicans and Democrats all came to this corner of Southern California to memorialize Richard Nixon, a man who, for better or worse, has been a major political figure for nearly half a century. For the last time. Hail to the Chief was played for Richard Nixon. Remembered on this day as a fighter and patriot and not for the Watergate controversy that drove him from office. Mr. Nixon's daughters, Tricia Cox and Julie Eisenhower, were joined by nearly 2000 mourners. All four living ex-presidents came to honor one of their own. And President Clinton delivered the final eulogy. May the day of judging President Nixon on anything less than his entire life and career come to a close. They deserved all the accolades he received. He was a great leader, very strong and brilliant. And laid the groundwork for many of the wonderful elements of progress we are enjoying today. Well, tonight, a Middletown man is in good condition after being buried up to his waist in dirt for six hours after a ditch caved in the night. Team's Dennis Edwards shows us how it happened and why it took rescuers so long to dig him out. Nice and slow. We had to shored up first to make it safe, and then we had to slowly with little spade shovels, take him out. That was it was literally spoon at a time. Gabriel Kerrison was in this foot and a half wide hole for more than six hours. He and four coworkers were looking for a water leak here in the 12,000 block of Mount Albert Road around noon. That is when the ground gave way, trapping the 21 year old construction worker up to his waist in dirt. A trench like this should have been secured. There's no reason that this accident took place. And luckily, we got the victim out alive. Karen Beth West was the first medic to get to Kersten. She found him in good spirits, treated his injuries and kept his spirits high.
