Yasser Arafat's plane landed in Washington just after 4:00. Yitzhak Rabin is in the air and there is an air of cautious optimism as these two old warriors prepare to launch an experiment in peace that will set the stateless Palestinian people on the road to independence. It seems almost impossible to believe that tomorrow morning, two former enemies will stand side by side here on the South Lawn of the White House. Israel's Prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, the general who 25 years ago captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and Yasser Arafat, PLO chairman, who until today had not been allowed in this country for 19 years. In Baltimore, Israeli friends Itzhak Cole and Ari Valiquette are divided on the peace issue, and it's called peace. So what then? The moment. And nobody. I have no argument with. Do I have an argument with with Arafat? No different. Look, you are telling them then to negotiate with them. We tried. Rabin and Peres tried to do the best job within it. We replaced Palestinian. Investigators say the unidentified man could have been in the water for two days. Right now, the police are calling the death suspicious. And so far, the driver of a stolen truck has managed to stay one step ahead of police. Now, here's the scene he left behind last night after police say he hotwired a carrier truck from Kenosha Auto Transport on to Tabasco Avenue around the 1200 block of William Street. The suspect lost control. He bailed out of the truck, allowing it to smash into as many as 15 cars. Three people taken to shock trauma. They've all been released, fortunately. This is fine. This is. This is not pressure. This is fun. It's what we started back in the 1st of February doing, you know, and when bank notes do in the first month, you not only got $98 in my checking book and the bills were 450. That's pressure. Johnny Oates is getting set for Wall Street week. He and the Orioles will try to keep pace with the Toronto Blue Jays because today at Skydome, the Blue Jays were able to complete a sweep of the California Angels Toronto fifth inning. There was no score to on for the Jays Paul Molitor who should get plenty of votes for MVP. Now they're going deep for his 19th home run of the season. The Jays behind Dave Stewart sweep the Angels 4 to 1 was the final. However, at Kansas City, there was a good news final for Orioles fans. Royals on the Yankees in the fifth inning. Brian McRae slices a fly ball down left field. This ball will go all the way to the wall. Jose Leon and Felix Jose will come in to score. Kansas City scored four runs in the fifth inning. They go on to bomb the Yanks by a final of 10 to 2. So the Yankees losing ten two to the Orioles could move ahead of New York with a win tonight. Other American League scores, The Red Sox crushed the tribe 11 to 1. Seattle over Milwaukee, 5 to 4 in ten innings. The Tigers over the White Sox, 6 to 3. And on Nolan Ryan day, the twins beat Ryan and the Rangers 4 to 2 in the National League. Montreal four, Cincinnati, 3 to 2. The Astros beat the Phils 9 to 2.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136246/file/252794#t=1388.41,1474.61"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136246/file/252794/transcript/71032/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The Phils lead is down to just five games. First possession. First punt by new Redskin Reggie Roby. Good distance. But watch what Johnny Bailey does from his own 43. Takes it right up the middle. Then breaks to the outside. Bailey will carry this ball all the way back. 57 yards for the score. Cardinals out to a quick seven off the lead. Washington certainly didn't count on this Mark ripping on the carry. He'll get ripped down by Eric Swann. The right knee will get pinned under the quarterback rip and goes down with a strain of the right knee. He will get an MRI tomorrow. Cardinals went on to deal Washington their first loss of the year. 17 to 10. Phenix upsets record two, one and one as well. Elsewhere in the early games, Jim McMahon led the Vikes over his old team, the Bears. Ten seven. The Giants stomped the Bucks 23 to 7 to go to two in a row. Israel and the Palestinians ready to acknowledge for the first time ever that each has the right to exist. It seems almost impossible to believe that tomorrow morning two former enemies will stand side by side here on the South Lawn of the White House. Israel's Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, the general who 25 years ago captured the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and Yasser Arafat, PLO chairman, who until today had not been allowed in this country for 19 years. In Baltimore, Israeli friends Itzhak Cole and Ari Barakat are divided on the peace issue and the cold peace. So what the moment and nobody is saying I have no argument. I argument was with Arafat. No different. Look, you are telling them then to negotiate with them. We tried. Rabin and Peres tried to do the best job where they need to be replaced. Palestinian George Damrosch owns a fruit market in East Baltimore. It is a good start for the Middle East to get rid of the wars under this section. And really both people, the Israelis and the Palestinians, to work hand in hand to build the country for the coming generations. His hand a fool with blood. I don't talk to a murderer. I do not want to talk to people whose all their life tried and killed Jews. Everybody can discuss it and solve it. No problems. Maybe few people will be against it. Well, more demonstrations today show Rabin and Arafat have enemies in their own camps. The Israeli ambassador was heckled today. Itamar Rabinovich was heckled today before delivering a speech in Queens, New York. The hecklers are upset by the peace plan. Calling Rabin a traitor for dealing with Arafat. And in Lebanon, Palestinians called Arafat a traitor, too, and they called for his death along with the death of the United States and Israel. Palestinians launched a series of attacks today. They ambushed two busses and attacked an Army jeep. Three Palestinians and four Israelis, including three soldiers, were killed. Yitzhak Rabin called on the PLO and the Israelis to work together to stop the violence. And now a look at the Middle East peace plan from two different perspectives. We welcome you and thank both of you for being with us tonight. Shoshana, first of all, you are one of the lucky people invited to the White House tomorrow. You were at the peace talks in Madrid in 1991. You were telling me. Yes. You visited Israel more than 100 times. You're friends with the attack Rabin, who said tonight he'll shake Arafat's hand if it's needed. What do you think your friend is feeling right now? I think he realizes that this is an opportunity that cannot be passed by. They cannot live with continued strife and war and hatred and terrorism. And the fact that Arafat is is recognizing and has recanted on all of his calls for the destruction of Israel has to be acknowledged to the world. And I think it's part of our being and I must say, Chairman Arafat are both very brave in taking this risk. We have to remember that tomorrow they are not signing a peace agreement. They're signing a declaration of principles, which down the road, years down the road, may lead to peace. Did you ever think you'd live to see this day? No. I did know that at some point there would be movement because the movement began in Madrid. And it was obvious that obvious that Chairman Arafat instructed those Palestinians who went there. But once the peace plan is signed and everything goes through, I think these people will understand that and will adapt to this change. Some people are more flexible than others. The Palestinians, the radical groups of Palestinians who did not adjust to this change. Let's give them some time and then they will adjust to that. Sean, any reaction to what your friend next to you is saying? I agree with him completely. It's just that perhaps because I'm a little older than he, I recognize that we have a very difficult road ahead of us. When I say ahead of us, I mean the entire world. The world has has to support the Palestinians economically because that is their greatest difficulty. The world has to recognize that Israel must remain secure militarily and be independent as she has been. And I think these are difficult for people to overcome initially. The past has been very, very strong. It will not be erased by tomorrow's signing.
