But today, President Bill Clinton is honoring America's role in freeing Italy. The president paid his respects at a World War two cemetery near Rome where thousands of Americans are buried. U.S. and Italian warplanes flew overhead honoring the troops who drove the Nazis out, especially the 50,000 men who died in the attempt. We stand today in fields forever scarred by sacrifice. Today, it is hard to imagine that this is now a place of peace. It is lush with the pines and the cypresses. On a more personal level, President Clinton also remembered his father, who fought in Italy about a hundred miles from today's ceremony. Tomorrow, the president goes to England to honor those who died keeping that country free. On this day 50 years ago, the world knew D-Day was coming. It just didn't know when. Today, we wrap up our look back at 1944 with the final preparations for D-Day. That is the predicament faced by the people of one Southwest Baltimore neighborhood who say relief may be in sight. If nothing else, within the past hour, neighbors found out what was causing the tremendous stench. Tonight, Alex Dietrich has a live report on what may be the end of a big neighborhood problem. Alex. Alex certainly hope so. The people who live here in the 1900 block of Ramsey Street have been complaining for months of a foul overpowering stench. It all has been pouring out of this row house and it has literally been so strong that it's been going through the walls and it's for some people to leave their homes. Now, the people here have been complaining for months to the owner, the police, the health and housing departments. And it wasn't until late this afternoon that the city finally took action. Animal control officers took out dozens of animals in a house described as incredibly filthy, full of feces and alive with fleas and roaches. You can't even come up here and unlock this door without having to go like this to get in and out of the house. When you hang your clothes on the line, you can smell it in your clothes. We can smell that when you turn the air conditioner on. We can't open our back door because you can smell it. We're starting to get a lot of flies and stuff, and you can smell like dog feces. God knows what's in that zone. God knows. But now neighbors do know what was inside, although not the reason. The woman who lives in the house is described as reclusive and unresponsive to complaints about the smell. A man who lives in her house was surprised by the raid. They say this place is full of animal waste and lots of fleas and it's pretty well clean among the fleas. Does the smell in there bother you for the and smell that bad for inside the hole? Alex, any word about charges, possible charges pending against the home owner? I did speak with the police department. They were here throughout the day off and on and were here during the raid itself. But they say they have no criminal charges pending against these people because the people put up no resistance. The president later walked among the headstones of the cemetery that sits near where the U.S. and British forces came ashore in 1944. Well, there were many battles being fought in Europe and at home during World War Two. For the few African-American soldiers, they were not only fighting the enemy, but the prejudice of the US Army. Stan Saunders has the story of one of those segregated units, the seven 61st Tank Battalion. Summer, 1944 American soldiers are engaged in fierce fighting with the Germans in Normandy, France. It was a test of true grit and combat readiness. I think some of the guys estimated that with a separate tank battalion, the lifespan was little more than a half hour when you actually made contact and the Germans were well dug in. They had very good tanks. But although the cost is deep, the results are incalculable to the time of battle. Meantime, at Camp Hood, Texas, intense training was still underway for World War Two's first all-Black Army tank Battalion, the seven 61st. Among its enlistees, Maj Joseph Kehoe. Truthfully, I'd never I didn't expect for the for that battalion to go into combat not as a tank battalion. The researchers are thought to be credible, Denise, but they say it's very preliminary research and much more needs to be done to confirm it. It's pretty frightening if it's true. Every time you turn around, it's something known about the food being harmful. Chicken, beef. You got to make sure you cook your beef real good. It would be hard to find a child who doesn't love hot dogs smothered in ketchup, mustard or relish. So far, by the way, there has been no reaction from hot dog makers. It's been called the mysterious flesh eating disease. It was recently reported in the British tabloids. They had a report of it turned up in Washington state. Healthwatch reporter Sandra Pinkney is here to help us understand what's really going on. Well, first of all, apparently it's not as mysterious as we've been led to believe, but it is extremely rare. It's called necrotizing fasciitis, necro meaning dead tissue. And there's more. It's been called the mysterious flesh eating disease. We went to shock trauma to find that patients with this condition have been treated successfully using antibiotics, surgery and oxygen. Be prepared. Some of the pictures in this story are graphic. We've seen the pictures of the mysterious flesh eating disease in Britain and more recently, the child who developed it through an infected chickenpox infected chicken pocket here. So they had to cut that out. And then they cut me all the way down. But this child had is not so mysterious at all. It's called a necrotizing infection. What it really means is that the chicken pox caused a skin wound that opened up and the infection was able to get in. And then it started growing in the tissue that had been damaged. This necrotizing infection is caused by group a streptococcus which causes strep throat. But in this case, the bacteria forms toxins which begin eating away at the flesh.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136702/file/253409#t=2855.39,2953.94"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136702/file/253409/transcript/71553/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Stopping the spread is crucial. The spread of the toxin is stopped with penicillin or. Some of the other more recent antibiotics that they've been looking at. And we think that the hyperbaric oxygen has a great deal to do with it. The oxygen is administered here in the hyperbaric chamber, the high concentration of oxygen 20 times the normal amount works by destroying the toxin and keeping it from spreading. It also stimulates the body to form new cells, new blood vessels. The first treatment last 90 minutes, three times a day. Then the treatment tapers off as the body heals almost immediately. We've seen this in a number of the patients that we've treated here that the turnaround is very quickly. Sometimes the symptoms can be subtle, but once it starts spreading, there's severe pain and discoloration of the skin. Blisters, fever, confusion, then shock. It's a truly uncommon condition. And if I say that we've treated 20 cases in the last ten years, that's very few. Yes. The last ten. I've never heard of this disease I don't believe before now. But it's doctors usually have. Is this fatal? Can it be fatal? It can be left untreated. And that was the point. Left untreated, it can be fatal. But the line of defense first is penicillin, then oxygen, and then surgery in some cases. All right, Sanjay, thank you. What's in a name? Can a woman have a baby using her deceased husband's sperm? That's what the utility fertility specialist in Orlando, Florida, are hoping for. The Maresca's were married only two weeks before animal rescue died in a car accident. After his death, his widow had doctors surgically remove his sperm and freeze it effort. We knew that technically we could retrieve the sperm. We knew that technically we could get a pregnancy with it. We still have not, in our own mind, worked through all the ethical ramifications. Even with a 30% chance, Mrs. Maresca says that she may wait a year or more before trying the procedure. Well, if you have ever opened your umbrella on a windy, rainy day, you know the risk a gust of wind can turn it inside out. When one product promised a solution, we decided to let Dick buy it. Yeah, this was a rather expensive solution because it was 30 bucks, which is, I guess a lot more. Buy umbrellas every day. But. But it's a lot. It's a bit pricey. Yeah. Well, the theory, of course, on this is that if it is built right, it will hold its shape and it won't end up in shreds. But we needed some wind to test it out, so we headed to College Park. Something like you wouldn't you wouldn't believe this. There were feces everywhere, all over it, on every floor. Basement, first floor in the upstairs floor. We we're trying to find homes for them.
