Good evening, everybody. The fire was huge and went to five alarms before firefighters could wrestle it under control. The Marina is just east of the Bay Bridge under the Narrows Bridge. And that's where Ron Matz has been covering this story all day. He joins us live with the latest. Hi, Ron. Hi, Sally. It was a spectacular fire here at Kent Narrows, the Mayors point Marina seen by thousands here on the upper shore. Thick, heavy smoke damage put at $1 million, maybe even more. In fact, veteran firefighters tell Eyewitness News it is the worst fire here on the shore in 20 years. Real quickly, they told us it was time to evacuate. We moved out of the building. We got everybody cleared out and it became fully involved. The showroom was completely on fire within another hour or so. Driving along Route 50, the thick smoke was easily visible. Many concerned motorists pulled over to watch, including a Marina employee. This worried about the people that weren't back there. You know, if anybody got hurt or anything like that, you know, I hope and pray that nobody got hurt because there they're really nice people back there. Some of those nice people watch their businesses go up in smoke. Today, Frank Taylor says he lost everything. I guess we had a couple hundred thousand dollars for the boats that were lost in the building, and that was just our part of it. The front half of the building is somebody else, and they had boats there, too. More than 100 firefighters battled the smoke and flames for nearly three hours before bringing this devastating fire under control. Everybody was running short of manpower when we first got here. That's why we went alarm after alarm to get enough people to put it out. Many expensive boats were spared, but this blaze. But the marinas, Jim and Jeanette Murphy, got support from friends again. Bad things happen to him. So motorists are taking it very slowly around here. One important point to note about this fire today. Firefighters on the scene told me they are very thankful that this fire did not happen yesterday because the winds here on the eastern shore were about 40 to 50mph coming out of the north northeast. And the firefighters say that could have endangered several restaurants here on the other side of the Marina, including some very famous restaurants, including the Harris Crab House, Annie's and Red Isacoff Bar. So they're very thankful this did not occur yesterday. And certainly it's tragic enough that we had the million dollars plus damage today. So wasn't there a fire at Meyers several years ago? Well, there was a fire at another location near here a few years ago, but to my knowledge, not one at the Myers Marina. Too soon to know what caused today's fire. Well, here's what we're being told by the state fire marshal's office. It's very possible this was an electrical fire, Electrical in nature. There was a power outage here in the Narrows area about 830 this morning. The fire started about a half hour later. Right now, investigators are trying to determine if the power outage was related to the devastating fire here this morning. Ron, thanks for that report live. There were no serious injuries, as Ron said, but several firefighters were treated for minor injuries, smoke inhalation and such at the scene. For the first time in US history, someone was killed in a bombing in an abortion clinic this morning. The blast ripped through a clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. An off duty police officer who worked as a security guard died in the explosion and a nurse was critically injured. The blast rocked the entire neighborhood. I didn't see anything, but I heard a big bang. It kind of resembled thunder. I was in my building and I just heard this huge explosion and this thing in my building starts shaking. And The New York Times reports a Lewinsky associate says the president and Lewinsky met privately at the White House late last month. The president reportedly told Lewinsky to admit she visited the White House, but to say the visits were to see the president's secretary, not him. Of course, the Lewinsky case is the biggest story in the country this week. And it doesn't look like it's going away any time soon. Katie Lyon is live in Washington tonight with more on the so-called feeding frenzy and what's going on as the media struggles to get the facts of this case. Katie, what's the latest? Hi. Hi, Guy. We're actually about a mile away from the courthouse. There are. TV crews, so many live trucks right there that there's no way you can get a parking space. I counted, I think about 14 at one point. And if all of those reporters and photographers were hoping for a feeding frenzy today, all they got was a little more than a crumb. Well, I don't know what the craziness is. You have all the vans and all the equipment. You're waiting for somebody to come out, hurry up and wait. But for most of today, it was relatively quiet at the courthouse at Kenneth Starr's office and at Watergate, where Monica Lewinsky shares an apartment. I think it's kind of crazy. I think that there's a good reason for them to be here, though, and that is that the president has some answering to do. And and he needs to answer for the things that the people are saying that he's done. Now, can I just to give you some kind of an idea of exactly what I'm talking about? I was talking with one of our network producers and he told me that there are 36 CBS News camera crews here right now. Six of them alone staked out around the courthouse building because there are various entrances. They're trying to catch some of these witnesses coming and going. 36 You think maybe they don't have enough, Katie? Katie, how the witness is being brought in and out? Alex Dietrich reports there are times when those trying to help need help themselves. Some emergencies are hard to miss. But most calls for help to fire and police departments are a lot tougher to find. A lot of times it's very difficult. Some houses aren't marked or there may be duplicate mailboxes at the end of a lane showing two addresses, but you're not sure what location it might be. You know, that's the question you're going to hear time and time and time now. What's a Yankee doing calling demos? What were your responses, your first opportunity to respond? John, I'm a professional broadcaster, okay? I played I played for the Yankees seven years, but I did play 17 years in the big leagues. This is my ninth jersey, so I have a lot of teams that I played for. This makes it complete. I think I've played for every team in the Al East. She has a headpiece that's absolutely smashed, and if it's not repairable, then she gets a brand new. She needs to make her wedding day the best. Just 24 hours earlier, Theresa thought. The wedding day would be a disaster. A death in the owner's family forced Wendy Beattie's bridal shop in Dundalk out of business, leaving eight of Teresa's dresses unfinished. She called several shops. None could complete the job on time. Then Theresa's bridesmaid got a call from Cherie. Words cannot describe it. A huge weight lifted off. This isn't the first time David has come to the rescue of a bride in distress. Cherie says there's an uncommon for smaller bridal stores to develop problems and go out of business. A teenager is found murdered in her grandmother's car. The horrible discovery was made just blocks from memorial stadium. Tonight, a Baltimore family is traumatized knowing the last moments of 18 year old Theresa Burton's life must have been torture. Suzanne Collins reports. Her body was found nude and she'd been stabbed over and over again. The teenager's grandmother was overcome with grief. Other family members tried to comfort her. On Tuesday, Jerusha Burton borrowed her grandmother's Mercury Cougar and was supposed to be home by 11. But she still hadn't returned when detectives came to the door yesterday afternoon. He said, I'm going to tell you, it's not good news. I said, Well, what is it? He said, We found your granddaughter nude in the car. She was murdered. It wasn't easy to discuss the gruesome crime or how the girl was stabbed all over her chest and face, especially when her family says Teresa was so loving. But the family wants the public to provide tips. It went up in smoke today. The fire was spectacular and the damage was heavy. Firefighters say the eastern shore hasn't seen a fire like it in 20 years. The Mears Point Marina at Kent Narrows became an inferno shortly before 9:00. They started fighting the fire, but at that time of morning, we still had about a 10 or 12 not wind coming out of the northwest. And when the fire broke through the roof, it pretty much well fanned and spread it through the rest of the structure. The Taylor Yacht Maintenance Company was hardest hit. Everything in the building went up in smoke, including several expensive yachts. I guess we had a couple hundred thousand dollars for the boats that were lost in the building, and that was just our part of it. The front half of the building is somebody else, and they had boats there, too. Motorists traveling on Route 50 pulled over when they saw the heavy smoke. Just worried about the people that weren't back there. You know, if anybody got hurt or anything like that, you know, I hope and pray that nobody got hurt because they're really nice people back there. More than 100 firefighters from all over the Eastern shore battled the spectacular fire for nearly three hours before it was declared under control. Combustible flammable liquids, fiberglass boats, very deep seated fire, very difficult to extinguish. Everybody was running short of manpower when we first got here. That's why we went alarm after alarm to get enough people to put it out. We're back live at the Amir's point. Marina, let me point out first that all this water here is not related to the five alarm fire today. High tide has just come up. Six businesses damaged here at Mears Point. 40 employees will be out of work, at least temporarily. Four yachts destroyed, including one yacht valued at a quarter of $1 million. And the fire marshal's office is looking into the possibility that the cause of the spectacular fire was electrical in nature. Denise. Well, Ron, all that is bad. But what about injuries? Was anyone injured in the fire? Well, fortunately, we had no serious injuries. Believe it or not, more than 100 firefighters battled these flames today, including a unit from the U.S. Naval Academy. As we told you yesterday, change is coming to beleaguered northern high school. 50 troublesome students are being kicked out. In his commentary tonight, Michael Oscar says it is a start. It is a start, but it's a very troubled school and we know that. Northern High School principal Alice Morgan Brown got every adult education last November when. 1200 students in one day. But that seemed like some surrealistic gesture, not quite connected with reality. Who suspends 1200 kids at once and means it? This time, she's not only gotten the attention of adults, she might have reached the kids by kicking out 50 who were behavior problems and were academically indifferent. She's made a gesture that looks reasonable. She's saying this is intolerable and she's telling those who were not suspended, watch out. And she's also saying what we've heard countless principals say before her. It's only a small percentage of kids who make the trouble. The majority want to learn. Well, here's a chance to prove it. The troublemakers have been removed. Calm has apparently been restored. The rest is up to the kids. They can show that they really want to work and that they've been newly liberated from the disruptive kids.
