Good afternoon. Right now Anne Arundel County police are on the scene of a disturbance at the County Detention Center. It started less than an hour ago. Officials tell eyewitness news that 40 inmates are demonstrating outside their cells. So far no hostages have been taken and there are no reports of injuries at this moment. Those officials do say there have been some mattressed barricades set up at the jail on Jennifer Road in Parole, Maryland. George Bauman is on the seen and he has telephoned us worried that the entire demonstration is overcrowding at the facility. And he says it should be buttoned up soon. First, the home's phone lines were cut. Then came a knock at the door. After hearing a knock on the door, the man of the house came to this window to look down one story below to see who was on the porch. He saw three men. Talking with them, he thought he recognized the voice of one of the men, so he walked across the living room and down the steps to the first floor entryway where he opened the door crack and then had it kicked open by a man with a sawed-off shotgun. The gunman forced the man back into his bedroom, where his pregnant wife was still in bed. There's a 16-month-old baby just 15 feet away. The wife screamed. The gunmen points a shotgun at her. The husband reaches for a loaded .38 caliber revolver on the dresser. He fires, and the gunman falls dead on the carpet. One shot hits the wall behind him. The other's the gunmen, whose shotgun, police say, misfired. His body then dragged down the long hallway by the woman of the house and thrown down the steps by both of them to the remaining two burglars who demanded it. Finding their compatriot dead, they took his identification, left his body on the porch, and ran away. They are still at large. Oddly enough, the house that was broken into is very close to several bigger, more expensive homes. A disagreement over pets is causing some problems in the Timbercroft Apartments in Reisterstown. It takes at least five hours of grooming, cleaning, dressing, and harnessing to get all those horses ready for display. And today, the horses will be on display at the Village of Cross Keys until three o'clock. Elsewhere in Maryland's racing industry, things are getting a little more serious this noon. At Laurel, track officials are looking at a $15,000 lien slapped on the track by the state's controller's office. The 15,000 is what the state says Laurel owes in unpaid taxes plus interest in a penalty. The taxes are due from last year's meet, the meet that ended in September. Track officials have referred the entire matter to their lawyers and are saying nothing about it today. There's also nothing said today about the secret meeting at Pimlico yesterday. Fifteen of the state top racing officials met to discuss the issues of jockey safety. And possibly the use of butazolidin on horses here in Maryland. We do know that the trainers and vets and officials on hand did study the spill last week that killed jockey Bobby Pineda and injured two other jockeys, but we don't know if any changes in the state's drug policy will result from that meeting or from the criticism that some jockeys have made of the use of bute. The Bullets are hoping to finish off Philadelphia tonight in front of the 76ers' own fans at the spectrum. They play the fifth game in their best of seven series tonight, and the Bullets go onto the court with a 3-1 lead in games. If they lose this one, the series moves back to the capital center. If they win, it's on to the NBA Finals, and Philadelphia can get ready for a long summer vacation. The Orioles are still trying to get in some time on the field, and tonight may prove the opportunity. They were rained out of three chances to play the Chicago White Sox this week, and now Chicago has flown out of town. Boston has flown in for two games. Last night was a funny case by game time it was sunny and clear overhead but the storm that moved through this area before game time soaked the turf so the game was called it will be made up in september sometime tonight mike flanagan pitches for the birds and he begins at seven thirty and as jim palmer watches that game tonight he'll be sitting on a slightly thinner wallet he's been fined an undisclosed amount for leaving the stadium before the game was over on sunday that was the game in which palmer was pulled in the second inning after the twins scored four runs off of them in the first inning. Now leaving like that is against a club rule. The fine was assessed after Palmer met with Earl Weaver and Oriole manager Hank Peters. Lacrosse playoffs begin in two hours among Division II teams. Four local schools play today. University of Baltimore takes on Adelphi. Washington College plays Ohio Wesleyan. During that time, the Orioles have won more games than any other major league team. And in most of those years, they've been in the pen and chase all season. Now suddenly, that wonderful show on 33rd Street seems to be faltering. The team is playing poorly. The crowd grabbing heroes of past year, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Boog Powell are gone. Now even Jim Palmer seems to have lost his touch, though temporarily we hope. But perhaps the worst thing is the recurring rumor that the Orioles may be sold and moved to Washington or Denver. This would mean the end of baseball in the city that produced Babe Ruth, Wee Willie Keeler, Lefty Grove, and even Dennis Casey, immortalized in the poem, Casey at the Bat. The selling of the team would not necessarily be a problem, but a transfer to another city would be a disaster for Baltimore. Obviously, the people of Baltimore area owe the Orioles their loyalty, which means better attendance. But it seems to us that the management owes the fans a direct statement that the franchise will not be sold to any other ownership that would take it out of this city for the foreseeable future. The Orioles are as much a part of Baltimore as the battle monument of the inner harbor. Those stories and more are coming up next right here on Channel 13's Eyewitness News. Once again, the Chessy tracks near 26 and Huntington are clear. Chess officials say the trains should be moving again by morning. Several hours ago, work crews removed the last of the derailed cars and debris that were blocking the heavily traveled freight line. Nobody was injured when three cars and the caboose of a Chess system train went off the tracks shortly before noon today, just west of the tunnel at 26 and Huttington. The train was on its way to Philadelphia when the derailment occurred. The fraudulent junk mail will be the subject of a hearing in Washington tomorrow. Last year, the Postal Service says it got more than 29,000 complaints about junk mail deliberately printed to look like legitimate bills. Absolutely not. Well you're going to have some nice weather Jerry the next couple of days. Temperatures will be up near that big eighty degree mark which will seem very very pleasant, very summer like. Currently under mostly fair skies, temperature down to fifty-six. Pretty darn comfortable out there right now. And hooray for the birds. I was at the ballpark tonight. It was a beautiful night, nice crowd and we won. Fifty-six, fourteen Celsius humidity, fifty-two percent in the winds. WNW at 7. 30.13 inches. And Insta and I was out tonight getting a little culture. Do you recognize this Jerry Turner? Oh yes, that's Jerry's front lawn of course. As you can see the lions guarding the estate. Actually it's the museum and of course if you were there tonight you probably got arrested for loitering but tomorrow will be a great day to go visit your Baltimore Museum of Art. Let's take a look at the satellite tonight to I'll show you what kind of day tomorrow I will bring you. As you can see, from the Maryland area, the central Atlantic coast, westward, there's a lot of fair weather, a lot of sunshine, the dark areas, of course, on our map represent areas of no cloud cover. You see some cloudiness out to our west, heavy clouds off the coast. That's the frontal system which moved through the region with the thunderstorms yesterday. We had a little bit of cloudiness today, but this high pressure system will give us a couple of really super nice warm days. In fact, even above normal for a change. Our normal high is 75. Tomorrow at least seventy five maybe even close to eighty and friday eighty maybe even the low eighties uh... This afternoon temperatures generally in the sixties and low seventies in our region down to the south some seventies and near eighty and a little further to the west really really warming believe it or not uh... One little place in west central texas one hundred and four degrees and along with some of the hot weather some thunderstorms beginning to break out over the central plains Alliance Kansas had 75 mile an hour winds today. And a pretty good thunderstorm. Some of this activity will be moving slowly to the east, northeast. There's a slim chance that we might pick up a shower or a thunder shower Friday afternoon with that warmer air, but a better chance by Sunday. And I'll show you why. By Sunday, or by tomorrow at least, we'll have a frontal system beginning to form over the central part of the United States. New air masses will begin to be moving down and clashing with some very, very warm air ahead of it. Showers and some general thunder hours in the central part of the United States. Slowly moving to the east, most of the activity will move to the northeast, away from our region. So we'll be just on the southern or southeastern boundary of perhaps some shower activity by Sunday afternoon, Sunday night. It'll remain warm the next five day period. Currently, 56 Salisbury, 53 in Harrisburg, 52 in Westminster, 60 DC, and down in Richmond, 60, 56 in Morgantown. Tomorrow, a southerly flow of air. 8 to 15, a nice day to be out on the bay or to do anything. Really enjoy it. Here's the forecast for tonight. A clear and kind of chilly night. Low from 43 to 50 degrees tomorrow and our five day forecast. A 76, beautiful sunshine. Oh boy, am I gonna do some work tomorrow outside. And 82 on Friday, a lot of sunshine. 77 on Saturday and in the low to mid 70s through Sunday and Monday, but a better chance of some shower activity at that time and tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. It looks like a sunny... Sixty degrees on its way to the mid-seventies so uh... Be nice have a nice lunch tomorrow
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149166/file/273790#t=2773.4,2979.73
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149166/file/273790/transcript/80282/annotation/95
Speaker 23: I think I'll sit out on my front porch, right up underneath the lion's head. The bottom of the ninth inning, Eddie Murray, a two-run home run, and that was the story really as the Orioles were trailing, going into the bottom of inning that stopped a seven-game Red Sox winning streak, which is nice since we're in the same division. Mike Flanagan picks up his third win against three losses on the season. Tom Bergmeyer, in relief, is the loser of Alan Ripley. Flanigan, by the way, also was humming that ball in the first seven, eight innings. He had 10. Strikeouts. Let's see the highlights the Red Sox started out one to nothing and Ken Singleton here nails a Ripley home run in the fourth inning over to the 385 foot mark and right center field goes actually went about 30 40 feet over about 420 that tied it up one one the Orioles came back to Red Socks came back for a two to one lead in the seventh then the bottom of the ninth pinch hitter Carlos Lopez hits his bloop single to center field Singleton bunting the second and then this was the shot Eddie Murray the same place that Singleton had knocked it over about four hundred and twenty feet right center field with Lopez on picks up the win three to two the final and that was Eddie's fifth home run of the year for Ken Singleton that was his third home run in the fourth inning and we went a three to to so the Orioles now pick up a half game on idle Detroit putting them seven games behind the division leading Tigers the Sox who had a chance to move into a tie. Drop a full game back you can see the ovation standing ovation for maurice home run everybody pretty excited tomorrow night they play again with denny martinez against undefeated bill lee same time seven thirty tonight in major league baseball and the rest of the american league cleveland beat seattle six to one final toronto over oakland three one chicago beat minnesota seven to two and texas uh... Just a few moments ago beat milwaukee final was four to three in the national league pittsburgh over san francisco five one New York beat Montreal 7 to 2. Philadelphia over Houston three one Lomborg the winner and the rest of the National League schedule is just getting started out on the West Coast the Bullets tonight we're playing up in Philadelphia a packed house of over 18,000 and believe me that was some kind of a game as the bullets only made the first point after that they missed 11 of 12 shots Philadelphia was up 23 12 after one quarter at the half they led by the same margin of 52 to 41 never really got on track. Dr. J led Philadelphia with twenty four points tied with Doug Collins that same figure. The doctor had been very cold the first four nights of the series. I watched the doctor come back down, he'll steal the ball and drive down again for two of his twenty four points. Caldwell Jones did a number on Elvin Hayes tonight, held him to twelve points. There comes the doctor again and he'll do it one more time. I love to see him fly through the air. One oh seven ninety four is the final. They'll come back to the capital center for game number six this Friday night. Denver and Seattle.
