Oh, no question. Very exciting today. It was terrific. And you know, you got the Kentucky Derby where the two horses came down the stretch and they were just like this much from the winner to the second place horse. Today's race not quite as close. It was actually a wire to wire victory. But in terms of Pat Day coming back and winning the thing for a third straight time after what happened to him earlier in the week, it's it's quite an accomplished accomplishment for him. After being bounced off of Prince of Thieves by Duane Lucas, Pat Day was picked by Nick Zito to ride Louis Quatorze. Well sweet revenge for the jockey who written the Preakness winner five times. Totally. Our team coverage begins with sports director John Deere. And for a recap of Louis, Pat and Mick's big day at all Hilltop. A couple of streaks converging on this 121st edition of the Preakness Stakes. First of all, there was, of course, trainer Duane Lucas, who had won six consecutive Triple Crown events coming into this year's Preakness Stakes. And then there was jockey Pat Day, who had won the last two Preakness. As they got away from the gate this afternoon, it was Louis Couture's Nick Zito's colt getting to the lead immediately. We felt that that, you know, we had a chance to make it seven. But realistically, we knew that that might not happen. I it gives us an opportunity to start over. He had been taken off Prince of Thieves by trainer Wayne Lucas Day then caught the ride on Louis Kid tours and wound up breaking Lucas, a string of Triple Crown victories while at the same time extending his own string of Preakness wins to three in a row. It's not vengeance. It's not you know, it's not what people would like to think that it is. It's a sweet victory. This is Job. You're an eyewitness sports. And perhaps the tip off to the fact that the Preakness Stakes time record was tied was a race that occurred two races earlier that set a record for six furlongs. And the analysts that were checking the things out, they were saying because the sun came out and dried out the track, it became what started as a muddy track, turned it into a fast track and a fairly routine group of 12 horses. And as you look across the region, look at the range at temperatures, 55 in Atlantic City, 75 in Hagerstown. We've had a warm front lingering pretty much right across the western shore of the bay throughout the afternoon. Our high temperature today got to 81 degrees, but Hagerstown was pretty close to 90. It's happening on Monomoy Island off Cape Cod. John Roberts has more. Monomoy Island is a refuge for all types of wildlife, but some residents, it seems, aren't as welcome as others. There is a tremendous overpopulation of gulls on the island, and other species have been kicked out. The seagulls, which numbers some 3000 nesting pairs, have taken over the neighborhood, crowding out the fragile piping plover, an endangered species. The Fish and Wildlife Service says just because there are birds on Monomoy doesn't make it a great birding area. Right now we have 95% gulls on that island. We need to provide some species diversity. The solution? Get rid of the goals. The method spiked breadcrumbs with poison margarine. We believe the poisoning program is cruel, inhumane, arbitrary and unnecessary. The gulls aren't pariahs to everyone. Opponents of the killer claim the birds are victims of political pressure to open up plover nesting areas on mainland beaches for off road vehicle use. The administration has been hammered by beach owners who resent having restrictions on RV use to help plovers. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are carrying out a poisoning program. Another group is claiming because the poison takes two days to work, the gulls could become an environmental hazard. I mean, they'll be dropping on the beach and the ocean on people's full voles. And then the Fish and Wildlife Service says the poison affects only gulls and was successfully used in Maine four years ago to revive the declining puffin population. On on on teaching. They are on their own research, their own publication. And and so the students get short shrift. Without faculty leadership, Naylor's research discovered students are learning more about drinking than any academic discipline. We believe that intense personal interaction is essential for education, and the students don't get it, and they're left to their own devices. We think dysfunctional bad things happen. So here's their plan. Limit enrollment to just 2000 students. Require professors to teach more courses and toughen course requirements. But administrators at public schools like the University of Vermont call the recommendations dangerous. The traditional American model has been an inclusive one where access to higher education has been much broader than it's been in, say, Western European countries. And the result of that is that you have a much better educated citizenry. And many students here believe getting an education is as much their responsibility as their schools. To me, college is not about getting a diploma. I mean, that's part of it, but it's a very small part. It's about learning. It's about becoming a different person. The debate over the value of a college education will only intensify as costs continue to rise. The Orioles television network presents Major League Baseball tonight live from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It's the Orioles and the Seattle Mariners. The temperature is heating up and so are the Orioles who have won six of their last seven. But last night's dramatic 14 to 13 win was a costly one. Hello, everybody. I'm Bill Parker, along with Jim Palmer. It was a dramatic, unbelievable win for the Orioles last night, but they lost two key players. P.J. O'Rourke was injured on a free play at first base, suffered a lacerated left ear and a sprained right ankle. The ankle injury, the more serious of the two. He's been placed on the disabled list. Mark Smith has been recalled from Rochester and Jeff Houston also got hurt. He injured his knee. He'll have an MRI tonight. And the Orioles recalled a pitcher, Esteban John from Bowie, to replace him. So those were a costly victory and that the injuries continue to pile up. Well, it certainly is. And I think that the Orioles will lose the services of B.J. sir, often. You know, here's a guy that not only was hitting well, I mean, playing well at third base. Now, Brian Hunter going to be Platoon with Darren Bragg. We saw Bragg last night, gets three base hits and hit him that hard, but had a lot of success. So some outstanding platoon situations. You can look at Fast Ball and Louis Paulo and he makes a nice play because when you're a base runner, what you try to judge is how quickly the left fielder get to the it gets to the ball. And Polonia with good speed keeps Hunter at first although he's slow the second baseman is up now and takes a fastball high. So Home made a pinch hitting appearance last night, flied out and stayed in the game to play third base. Last year he opened the season as a utility man, but by June wound up as a regular shortstop, very aggressive free swinger. It doesn't take a lot of pitches. He can reach it. He's happy about it. To an old show last year hit 289. Seven home runs.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115822/file/219690#t=6793.12,6905.97"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115822/file/219690/transcript/62496/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And, you know, it reminds me very much of a right handed Ozzie Guillen, both from Venezuela. The ball is close. They're going to swing at it. With a little bit more extra base power. And swings and pops it up. And who's going to take it? Jeffrey Hammons calls off the Alamo. Two down. My name is Sure. Number 17, John Patrick. John Marzano. Coming up now. Marzano, former Boston Red Sox catcher who's had problems with his arm. He's undergone shoulder and elbow surgery in recent years. Now the backup catcher to Dan Wilson. As of late March getting only to 14. That he takes a fastball high. The last time Marzano started the game was on May the 3rd against Cleveland and went two for three with a double. He hasn't played since then and most likely will not get a lot of playing action this year. Dan Wilson off to a great start with eight home runs. Nelson also throws well we saw that late last night receives the ball well. Kind of reminiscing with John Marzano. He was on that great Olympic team in 1984 with Will Clark and Mark McGuire. McDowell, Barry Larkin, Barry Lark. The fact that team was so good. Barry Larkin, who was the most valuable player in the National League last year, couldn't even start. Corey Snider played third base. Line foul one and two to John Marzano, who played college ball at Temple University. The Orioles had a player from Temple last year. Jeff Mento, who went to play in Japan, was released and was signed by the Red Sox. Kent Mercury is left handed but does not do a good job of holding runners. They virtually run wild when he's pitching. He's got a high leg kick and knows you get a read on him.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115822/file/219690#t=6906.42,7053.67"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115822/file/219690/transcript/62496/annotation/59","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"They go, Well, yeah. And what happens is his front leg, his right leg goes behind the pitching man. You know, he cannot kind of slowly. Mike Flanagan, one of the best moves he does bring that leg up very slowly. And Runner can never really discern whether you're going home or to first sidestep this time. And it's grounded foul. I had a chance to watch the game that you and Mike did in Milwaukee, and then they just took off. First move. And of course, that's one of the great strengths, along with, you know, Greg's on hitting Greinke, given hitting home runs for the Brewers, but we're going to try to run you out of the ballpark. Seattle not quite that type of ballclub. Amaral will run. I'm going to try to beat you with hitting home runs. They lead the Major League a shot back through the middle and into center field for a base hit. Ryan Hunter will go to third. Runners at first and third with two outs for the Mariners with Russ Davis coming up, and they continue to hit the ball hard. The ninth and third baseman. Know when you don't play a lot you don't try to over swing. You get two strikes. You try to protect the plate. As you imagine John Marzano not getting a lot of bats being the backup catcher and he just puts the bat on the ball and gets himself a base hit right over the mound. Merkur unable to come up with it. Here's Russ Davis, the third baseman who was one for four last night. Davis acquired along with Sterling Hitchcock from the Yankees in a trade that sent Tino Martinez to New York. The Mariners getting two good young players Hitchcock to talented left handed pitcher and Davis, a third baseman with power.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115822/file/219690#t=7053.79,7152.21"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115822/file/219690/transcript/62496/annotation/60","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We will see Sterling Hitchcock tomorrow as he pitches against Mike Mussina. It's a good match up marker, not really getting a breaking ball over yet and only one changeup and Davis, a good fastball hitter. Lo Greggs on his behind the plate tonight for the royals. Now, see, there's a perfect example. Not only not having a breaking ball and a changeup and good velocity, he missed by about a foot. John moved in and he threw the ball down and away. That's too low. 2 in 1. For right here. Russ Davis is going to sit on a fastball. If you don't have good velocity, if you have an inconsistent breaking ball, and if you can't locate your pitches, what do you do? Well, that's why you have a 7.63 era. Davis has won the deep center field. Mike Devereaux is back to the warning track. He's got it. And Kent murders living in the fast lane. So far, the Mariners have hit some balls real hard, but they haven't scorch. Can you spot the difference between these two transmission problems? Don't watch. Just listen. That you can tell the simple problem from the one that's a real handful. That's why at Armco centers, expert technicians use state of the art diagnostic tools. And that is career homerun number 200 for Rafael Palmeiro. Coming soon to Camden Yards. Be at the ballpark and see the Orioles. Mix it up with Mark McGwire in the Oakland A's May 24th and the 26th. There are still plenty of good seats left, but they're moving quicker than a mike machine, a fastball. Videos battle the A's May 24th to the 26th. Be there. HD is now on Comcast's full standard basic service called Comcast today at 9315050 and get connected. Comcast clearly the future. Big ovation for Rafael Palmeiro as he comes up for the first time. He had quite a night last night. Palmeiro had five hits and six at bats with a double, a homer and a career high. Six runs batted in and marked the sixth time in his career that he's had five hits in a game. Goals. Also tied to Oriole Club record for most hits in one game. I became the 32nd player. To get five hits and become the only one in the history to ever have six. And in one night he raised his batting average from 255 to 279. Back to respectability with.
