Some showers, Merrill just a few showers in southern Delaware for the most part. Now, partly cloudy skies with a lot of moisture around. There's a good chance of some fog forming as the winds diminish tonight. Looks like we could see some scattered areas of fog which could be locally heavy by the early morning hours tomorrow. So watch out for that as you're going out tomorrow morning. Now, a national radar. Almost all the precip is real on the East Coast. Dairy products is specifically a sugar in dairy products, and it's called lactose. You may have heard of lactose brought into my healthwatch. If you already know you suffer gas and cramps when you eat dairy products, you don't need this kit. But if you don't know that, the kit may help. I had stomachaches and we still had to go to the bathroom to be told that my stomach is hurting. And did you know why it was convenient for Chad that his father, Dr. J. Perman, had put together a kit that he says eventually pinpointed that Chad's body was not digesting lactose, lactose, the sugar found in milk and dairy products. And according to Pertman, millions in this country don't have the enzyme in their small intestines needed to digest lactose. And for some, that can lead to problems like stomach pain, diarrhea, cramps, bloating and gas. One of those gases is hydrogen gas. That's the only way that hydrogen can be formed in our bodies. And a portion of that hydrogen is absorbed into the bloodstream and blown off in the lungs, and that becomes the basis of the test. The test measures the hydrogen in your breath before and after lactose. First, on an empty stomach, you take a sample of your breath. It's not very high and it's kind of fun. It's all from your nose. Then you capture that sample in a vacuum packed tube. We'll show you how in a minute. Then you stir up some lactose in water. Okay. I'm going to make your lactose. You can put that in milk or you get lactase milk that contains already contains the enzyme. Or you can get yogurt, which is a live bacteria. That was Greg Olsen, the young man with a tremendous fastball and a great, great curveball, closed out and set a rookie record for saves. So I think that that he's the type of player you can build a bullpen around for the future. And certainly he's going to be effective for many years to come. We look ahead to the playoffs now. Toronto against the Oakland A's, the A's, the defending American League champions. How do you see this series developing? Well, Toronto, of course, they had to keep the pedal to the metal all the way and just to beat out the Orioles. But I really feel that the Oakland A's are a team on a mission this year. Last year, losing the World Series to the Dodgers when many thought that the A's were the best team in baseball. And I still feel they are. Good news for oyster lovers and the industry as a whole tonight as the season officially opens. As watermen prepare to bring in the first of this season's harvest, the Natural Resources Department is predicting a year as well as last. Officials say around 390,000 bushels of oysters could be harvested from the bay this year. That's good news. After parasitic diseases nearly wiped out Maryland's oyster population in past years. There is controversy tonight, however, of the state's latest findings on Rockfish. According to the state, 1989 was a good year for rockfish production in the bay. So good. In fact, they're preparing to resume a limited season on striped bass fishing. Some watermen, however, dispute the state's findings. Hopefully son Matt will take over the family operation next, but if he doesn't. Dairyman Tracy has limited options. Previously, if push came to shove, Tracy could have sold his land to hungry developers eager to pepper the countryside with new subdivisions. But now that the Baltimore County Council has passed a prime and productive soil bill, agricultural preservation takes precedent over development. You get old and you're not able to work anymore. And we don't have big, you know, retirement from some kind of industry. It's it's little Social Security check. And and that's not the greatest. And you should be able to sell your land that you know at land values that sold around you. The bill passed allows the Department of Environment and Resource Management to map out how many houses can be built on each prime and productive acre, thereby preserving the agricultural complexion of northern Baltimore County. Translation The law puts the brakes on urban sprawl while farmers realize the need to preserve farmland. Too much regulation makes for bad economics. Tracy says a lot of this land is prime development land, and some of these neighboring farms are going for as much as 40 to $50,000 an acre. And he says that's enough to make any farmer turn his or her back on land preservation. Traditionally, when land is preserved, equity is lost in. Tonight, we're going to tell you about a startling and controversial study that says you may not have nearly as much effect on who your child will become as you would like. It says that fully half of an individual's personality can be genetically influenced. This is a study of twins brought up in separate families. And as you'll see, it has powerful implications about who you are and how you got that way. We begin tonight with a report from Bonnie Strauss. My name is James McCandless. And you don't know me, but I've been looking for you for quite awhile. Last year, filmmakers were on hand to record a very special reunion in Denver. Jim McCandless was reunited with his identical brother, Trent, who we hadn't seen since birth. I'm Jim. How are you? Not bad. It's good to see you for all these years. But the picture wasn't completed until a few hours later when Jim met his other identical brother, Tracy, who had grown up with Trent. Even though the buried. You can see it? Yeah. He had a cleft. Yeah. Triplets and twins are of a fascinating quirk of nature, and they offer startling insights into human behavior. They really are a living laboratory. They provide a detailed glimpse into why people are the way that they are. Scientists have studied identical twins for years because they share the same genetic makeup. And now a ten year study of twins at the University of Minnesota is trying to find out how much of human behavior is genetically predetermined. Study we're carrying out is a large, comprehensive medical and psychological assessment of twins reared apart.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493#t=5374.62,5488.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493/transcript/70817/annotation/49","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We look at every kind of trait you can imagine, from handwriting to brainwaves to cardiovascular function. This test we're going to be doing is something called the Raven progressive matrices. And it's a test of abstract reasoning. Researchers have gathered data on over 100 sets of twins raised separately and reunited only recently as adults. Twins like Gerry and Marc, who found each other only three years ago. I went to college to study forestry. I worked in the field. He worked in the field as a trainee, as a tree climber, a nursery man. And I went to college and learned that I installed fire suppression systems in buildings, kitchens. I installed the electronic equipment, burglar alarm, fire alarms. Kerry and Amy were separated for 25 years before they met again. Nine times out of ten. I know exactly what she's thinking for walking down the street and we see something real odd. I will have to do is look at each other and we know exactly what each other's thinking. Studying apart twins highlights in the most dramatic way possible. The fact that genetic influences do underlie so many of our behaviors, our physical characteristics, our medical life histories. According to the study, genes play a big role in shaping our personalities. For example, if you're an extrovert and like to be the center of attention, you probably were born that way. It's the same thing for many other personality traits as well. The study claims the following traits are influenced more by genetics than by environment. Leadership ability. Oversensitivity, cautiousness neuroticism, imaginative ness, even obedience to authority. I's critics of twin studies are skeptical. What's occasionally a problem with simplistic conclusions about twin studies is that because we know nothing about the mechanism at work, there are sometimes people throw their hands up and say, Well, it's genetic, we can't do anything about it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493#t=5489.82,5607.68"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493/transcript/70817/annotation/50","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And that's a disaster. I think simply gathering pairs of twins, so-called separated twins, is not going to tell us anything other than a few romantic and exaggerated stories that a lot of us find rather difficult to believe. But the fact remains that twins and triplets do share a unique common bond. Just ask Bobby, David and Eddy. They've been described as three versions of the same song. Separated at birth and raised in three different homes. They were reunited in college nine years ago. Today. They're partners in a New York restaurant called Triplets, giving me somebody to sit down with them and just find that you get along, you hit it off immediately. Well, imagine if it's one step better than that. It just fits perfectly. And that's the way our relationship was from the very beginning. So is it nature or is it nurture? The jury is still out. But what was once an unexplainable phenomenon now has the scientific community divided. A situation that many twins and triplets no doubt find amusing, since they say they've known the answer all along. For Nightline, I'm Bonnie Strauss in New York. And when we come back, we will be joined by the identical triplets you've just seen in that report, Robert David and Edward VI, the director of the University of Minnesota study of twins Thomas Bouchard, and by Dr. Paul Billings, a Harvard University specialist on human genetics, who has some doubts about that research. The following year, Bobby went up to the same school and my friends from the previous year thought that he was me returning. So then what happened? And a friend of mine came up to me in Queens College, showed me the newspaper with the photograph of Bobby and Eddie. And at that point, September 18th, 1980, we knew we were triplets. Now, I have to put myself in your position. If I suddenly found out that there were two other of me running around somewhere, I'd first go into shock. Yeah, that's. That's about it. Ecstatic shock. And then second, I would start trying to see what the similarities and what the differences are. Did that happen with you? Yeah. By the time I got into it, Eddie started to ask me questions. I met Eddie first, and Bobby called that night. And Eddie was on the phone with them first. Bobby want to speak with me? And he started asking all these questions about school and wrestling and food and women and zillion other things. And Eddie just grabbed the phone and said, It's all the same. I must point out that the degree of similarity is so great that it really overwhelms the twins. But it's not perfect similarity. It's not 100%. In fact, you can look at the findings from the study as kind of two levels of anecdotal self-report level where the twins talk in general, and you can look at it in terms of measured characteristics like measured brainwaves, measured personality traits.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493#t=6182.85,6318.39"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493/transcript/70817/annotation/56","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And when we get down to the measured characteristics, the degree of similarity tends to drop somewhere somewhat in the personality area, for example, the degree of similarity is about 50%. If we looked at brainwaves, however, we find the similarity is more like 80%. So it varies a little bit from trait to trade. And as you get away from basic biological functions to psychological functions, it drops a bit. But it really is amazing. We've had you are saying, sorry if I understand it, that there are some traits that are much more genetically influenced than others. Is that right? Yeah, there are a few. Brain brainwave data being one set of data that shows a stronger genetic influence. Personality that are showing somewhat less. Well, what kind of behavioral traits? I mean if I tend get creative, is that is that one of them? Yes. The personality traits we tend to measure tend to be things like neuroticism or stress reaction, sociability, achievement, motivation. One of the attitude measures we measure is traditionalism. These are standard personality traits measured by psychological tests that were devised to assess personality without any notion of heredity or genetics in mind. Dr. Billings, this is largely a study, as you see, of all these different traits, and a lot of it is statistical. And I'm reminded of Mark Twain, who said that there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Now, is that what you think this study is? Well, for us, the study hasn't been very carefully reviewed. Much of the information about the study has appeared only in the press. One has to remove all sorts of biases from the study before one can draw any kind of conclusions and before careful review of that kind of material. I think it's very premature to make conclusions of any sort. You know what, Mr. Fisher? This is this complaint has been leveled at you before. They say this is terribly, terribly important information. It has to do with what all of us are at base. And here it's been in every newspaper around the country, has been the news magazines. It's on television programs long before it got in the scientific journals so that Dr. Billings can check you out. Well, there's no question we've had a considerable amount of publicity, and we've always taken the position that we'd be perfectly happy to talk with the media and anyone else who wanted to talk with us and answer any questions anybody wanted to ask. But let me let me point out, first of all, we present this material at scientific conferences on a regular basis, 2 or 3 conferences a year to our professional colleagues in genetics and behavior genetics, and then to research. In addition, it's not the case that we have and publish this material. We have over 30 publications. About 15 of those are in the edited scientific literature. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Cardiology, European Journal of Neurology, Journal of Clinical Investigations. So a great deal of the material is in there, but because of the comprehensiveness of the study, it's in many different kinds of journals, cardiovascular journals, pulmonary journals, high journals.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493#t=6421.77,6518.85"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493/transcript/70817/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So it is in a wide variety of places. So what you're saying is that Dr. Billings, if I could turn to you, Dr. Billings, I think he's saying that you haven't done your homework. Well, for us, for instance, one of Dr. Bouchard's publications in a in a review journal involves six pairs of homosexuals. And the conclusion from that was six pairs of identical twin homosexuals was that male homosexuality was significantly genetically inherited. Now, I wonder whether one can draw much of a conclusion from such a small sample and such a complicated kind of behavior like homosexuality must really be. But we're looking at the broader question of what about our makeup is genetically influenced? What's going to persuade us in a certain direction and what's actually determined by the environment? We don't only have Mr. Bouchard's study, we have a study in Sweden. We have a study in Finland. We have lots and lots of other studies. And these seem to imply the same thing that that he is saying is that much of it is hereditary influenced. Well, for us, the twin method, particularly the twin and adoption method, is particularly good for showing environmental influences. It's very it has never really yielded a major gene which affects behavior. The research over the many years the twins have been studied has never yielded a nice a single gene which we know influences behavior. But for instance, there was a study recently published using an adoption method, looking at the intelligence test, the IQ test, and that showed the very profound influence of the environment on scoring on the IQ test. And that was a very elegant way of using the adoption technique to study environmental influences. All right. Let's pause here, gentlemen. Flush 90 and bring your fuel bill back down to earth. Mr. Bouchard. I think one of the criticisms that I hear, at least one of the concerns I hear about these kinds of studies is that if you're told that something is going to be very much hereditary influenced, that there's not much you can do about the direction that you're going to go, people are just going to throw their hands up and say, well, I can't make my child more intelligent. I can't make my child less aggressive. He's just going to go that way and are going to give up. Yes, that's a real a true misunderstanding of our findings. And we do try to explain that carefully. One of the things we're trying to do in studying these twins is get a fairly detailed life history and find out how they function, what they like and how they behave so that we can explore the methods that these traits by which these traits develop. As Professor Billings pointed out, we don't know the mechanisms by which these kinds of processes purr. And one of the goals here is to find those mechanisms. But I must point out that if you didn't find these similarities in twins and you didn't find lack of similarity in unrelated individuals work together, there'd be no purpose to search for mechanism. So you have to demonstrate that there's something going on before you begin to search for mechanisms. I'm not sure what you mean by mechanisms, though. This this talk about Bobby, David and Eddie, what were you looking for there in terms of mechanisms? Well, we actually asked very, very similar questions of all the twins to find out what their preferences were, their behaviors were, and and why they behave the way they did as children.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493#t=6751.62,6841.11"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493/transcript/70817/annotation/61","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So we we asked a lot of information about their child rearing to find out whether, in fact, they elicited certain kinds of behaviors from their parents or whether their parents behaved in ways that were unrelated to their behaviors. And where the twins report very, very strong behaviors that drove the parents to go along with it. You have some idea here that there's an endogenous process driving the environment. I think I understand you. Let me turn to you. Did you find that you had similar kinds of childhood? Were you eliciting the kinds of responses from your parents, each of you that were like the others? Very much so. Very much so. A lot of things were very similar. Yet Bobby's parents, Bobby's father was a physician, and he had more of a medical background. My father was in business. I had more of a business background. His father was a teacher. He had more of a background in certain areas as well. But a lot of areas that weren't necessarily related to our directly to our environment were the same across the board. Like what? Our taste in music, our taste in food, our taste in friendships. A lot of the things that we did, sports were involved in many, many, many, many things, as well as our outgoing personalities, what I call personalities. What personality is. Now, now, Bobby, you found that your childhood, in fact, was much like like like your your brother's childhood, Is that what you're saying? We grew up very similarly. Yes. Dislike. Go ahead. Well, our parents are very different and we're very much the same. So, I mean, as children, we were very outgoing. We were very we were very athletic. We were very we were hyperkinetic. We were. And we were just a lot of things that didn't necessarily have any bearing on influence from our parents. Dr. Billings That's one of the kinds of things we find. We find that there are sort of driving forces within the individual to behave in certain ways or certain classes of ways. And these don't tend to be very strongly related to characteristics of the parents or. Right. So I understand I'm very short on time. I want to get Dr. Billings in here. Dr. Billings, when you hear these stories over and over and over again, not just from these guys, but from so many others, it seems awfully compelling that there's something at work here. Well well, for us, it's well known from twin studies in the past that there's a lot of selective placement, that twins are not put into absolutely separate environments. They tend to be put into similar environments when they're adopted out. Furthermore, people who look alike often get treated alight, and that treatment results in a kind of similar personality. Now, that doesn't mean that the way that the genes that caused them to look alike are personality genes. Though Dr. Bouchard might find that to be true during his study. I think that there are genetic components to some kinds of behaviors, but we already know that the environment is a very powerful influence, even on the most genetically determined. Dr. Bouchard I've got 10s What's the message? Well, I wouldn't disagree with that. There is no question none of our findings argue that personality traits abilities are fully genetic. Thank you, sir. Next on Hard Copy, a dedicated cop hunts the killer of dozens of young women and the secret of how a hero pilot kept his nerve. October 2nd, 1989. Hi. Welcome to Hard Copy. I'm Terry Murphy. And I'm Alan Frio. He start the streets of Seattle at night preying on young women. And he found them. Police believe he murdered at least 50 women, most of them runaways and prostitutes. Hard copy producer Peggy Callahan discovered one detective who refuses to give up the search that others have abandoned. He believes that the lives of street people are worth as much as anyone's. People were still talking about the Ted Bundy murders in Seattle during the summer of 1982. But by then, there was worse to come. A killer was already stalking young prostitutes and runaways on the streets of Seattle. The bodies of the first five victims were found in or near the Green River. 48 women were killed before the killer quit or moved on. Some believe he moved down the West Coast and gang killing in San Diego.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493#t=7044.48,7206.03"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136091/file/252493/transcript/70817/annotation/64","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But if it was the governor's daughter, the mayor's daughter, the police to start or whatever. Whereas other time they just they just another don't seem to like Susie and Theresa work the same Seattle streets where the Green River killer once hunted victims.
