He was just a tremendous fighter for his constituents. I don't think we have a harder working city councilman than Mamie DiPietro. Mimi DiPietro came to this country from Italy when he was six months old, and he lived in this house on Claremont Street here in Highland Town for nearly 85 years. Mimi married late in life but was devoted to his wife, Frances. They were married 29 years. Politics was his other love. And up the street from his house, he founded the United Democratic Club. He served in the city council for 25 years and made many friends. He did everything that a person could do. And you don't find a politician? No way. I don't believe in this country. Representatives, people better than Mimi represented his in the first District. If you needed a street cleaned or if you needed a job, all you had to do was call Mimi. On his final day in office, Mimi told Richard Cher that while he was heartbroken at leaving, he would never forget the people I helped. All the people that called me. Now Michael Lasker has reported countless of stories on Mimi DiPietro, and you join us now for a special weekend commentary. What did you call him? A slice of slice of pizza. Ron Mattson I spent a lot of time at City Hall and other places with him through the years. There was nobody quite like Mimi. Mimi DiPietro was the man who caused listeners to swoon when he surrounded a simple idea with the English language. He thought the criminal courts had too much flea bargaining. He said people enjoyed him so much when he gave a speech, they gave him a standing ovation. He met Pope John Paul and called him Mr. Pope. But along with the broken grammar, Mimi DiPietro was also the hardest working councilman in the city of Baltimore. You went to his office any day of the week for 25 years. And there was Mimi on the telephone finding jobs for people. You went to East Baltimore and there was Mimi making sure the streets were clean. There was something else about him In the years after the riots, those like Mimi and Do Burns understood the city's new arithmetic of race. They reached across the old color boundaries, trying to wipe out generations of distrust. In many ways, Mimi DiPietro was the most uncontrolled politician we're likely to see again. And we're going to be bathing in this gorgeous, cool autumn, like almost autumn, like air mass for the next couple days. Little disturbance for sure. No problem at all. It's history. Mimi married late in life but was devoted to his wife, Frances. They were married 29 years. Politics was his other love. And up the street from his house, he founded the United Democratic Club. He served in the city council for 25 years and made many friends. He did everything that a person could do. And you don't find a politician? No way. The fire was first reported shortly after one in the morning and wasn't controlled for a few hours. All the classrooms at the high school were destroyed. The adjoining elementary school was spared. The school's controversial principal, Helen Humphries, tried to fight the fire, then began arguing with a local news photographer to get out of here. Why don't you get out of here? Why don't you go? Hey, hey, hey. Oh, my God. You tried this, dude, and you threw it. Hey. Oh.
