It was easy to tell just how fired up the damper is about having a shot at this job here in Charm City, and this organization is just got the makings of a great organization. Anybody would want to be in the manager of this team. And I certainly do want to give that impression that I would like to be the manager of this team. Also, Rick Dempsey, the first of the managerial candidates to be interviewed. All of this, as we said, coming less than 48 hours after that position came open. So obviously the Orioles are not going to waste any time and neither are we. As with all deliberate haste, we now turn to the roster who is down at Camden Yards where you got Ronnie? Well, I tell you, John, they are moving fast. The Orioles are not wasting any time. Indeed. And let me tell you, John, reporters weren't supposed to know where this meeting was taking place, but we found Rick Dempsey and the Oriole Brass at a downtown hotel where they held a lengthy discussion. Rick, needless to say, is enthusiastic about just interviewing for the job of Orioles manager. And right now, he finds himself a leading contender for the job. For years, Rick Dempsey was more than just a catcher for the Orioles. He was the team's emotional leader on the field and a fan favorite. Now Rick Dempsey is back in Baltimore in the running to succeed Johnny Oates as the Orioles next manager. All over Baltimore today, baseball fans were buzzing about Rick Dempsey. They enjoyed him as a player and would love to see him as the Orioles next manager. Well, I think he's a good motivator. I think he's he knows baseball. I think he'd be good for Baltimore. And Mr. Dempsey knows what's more, this city loves him. I think the state loves him and the team definitely loves him. I think he would do well here in Baltimore. Club officials say Dempsey is the first of at least four candidates who will interview for the job. We will make our evaluations and reports only after the conclusion of our process of interviewing several candidates. And while Oriole Park at Camden Yards is empty, it's clear the fans would love to see the Denver back in an oriole uniform this time as the man who calls the shots, and he would like nothing better. It was just a pleasure for me to come here and to interview. It was my first interview and I'm glad it was with the Orioles. Well, John, Rick Dempsey said something very interesting later this afternoon to reporters about his popularity with the fans. He said popularity doesn't win ballgames, but it could give the team an emotional edge. He said the talent is here. You just need to add some enthusiasm to the mix. A deadly disaster as a Baltic Sea ferry sinks in a storm. The ferry was packed with 1000 people heading from Estonia to Sweden. Less than 150 people survived. ABC's Vernon Mann is in London with the latest. First light. The rescue boats encountered 30 or 40 orange life rafts in the area where the ferry went down. Most of them were empty. And a horribly cruel trick of fate. Some had escaped the sudden sinking of the ferry, only to have their life rafts capsized by waves of 20ft or more, whipped up by winds of 60 miles an hour. Every ship from hundreds of miles around joined the search operation. The stormy weather continued throughout the day, making things difficult for rescuers, appalling for any survivors still adrift in the sea. Finnish Navy vessels coordinated the search. There were survivors 100 or more. One British picked up in ones and twos in this, the worst maritime disaster in the Baltic since World War two. Several passenger ferries, their captains and crew, shocked by what had happened, helped in the search to those who did survive this terrible night. Shocked. Distressed. Well, Sally, we have to first give you a little background. A month ago, we told you the condition of Gloria Willson's home on Bigley Avenue was so bad that a neighbor's house was condemned. As a result, her roof fell in in the spring and rain pours in. She had more than 40 cats and the filth had really gotten out of hand.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981#t=1215.93,1322.24"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981/transcript/71319/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The stench raw sewage, even flowed into the adjoining house. Well, today, a judge found Gloria Wilson guilty on four counts of criminal nuisance. And that's not all. Are you worried at all about the fact? I feel pretty good. I feel pretty good. A charitable volunteer is trying to help Mrs. Wilson. She came out of the court earlier and told us that she was just terribly upset by the decision. She was weeping. She told us that, she's most upset about the fact that he ordered that her cats be removed from the house. All 45 of them. This woman, apparently is quite close to her cats, and that really upset her. She told us that she didn't even want to live anymore. We were trying to bring you that, sound with Mrs. Wilson. There have been promises of donations, of a new roof, of drywall work, and there are people willing to help her clean up. That work has yet to move ahead. While Mrs. Wilson and her son, who also lives there, are going through all their belongings. But today, the judge did say that something's got to change. That work's been taking just too long, Sally. And he did convict her. There will be a sentencing, but it's not likely she'll go to jail. What else did the judge say besides the fact that she has to get rid of the cat? Suzanne? Well, he told her that a building inspector must enter her property immediately, and she's got to give them access. That's been one of the problems. She's been sending inspectors away. And also, he told her that she should hook up with a social services worker, which they did after the court. We, by the way, have that tape of Mrs. Wilson's reaction to being convicted.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981#t=1322.63,1411.3"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981/transcript/71319/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Let's see what she had to say. Suzanne Collins reporting live from Towson tonight. There is an event taking place in Baltimore this weekend that could touch the lives of millions. Healthwatch reporter Kelly Lynn is here with more. That's right. You know the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has done so many good things for breast cancer research over the years. It's raised millions of dollars. And this weekend that organization is going to take part in the annual race for the cure. Pat Warren has the story of one of the women who plans to participate. I feel pretty good. I feel pretty good. Susan Logan is running for her life, and the lives of the nearly 200,000 women who will find out they have breast cancer this year. This is the second race for Sue's. She's also a two time survivor, placed second as a survivor. And, so it was kind of exciting. And then it was it was about a week later that I found out that it came back. It came back after her mastectomy and after her first race for the Cure went wrong, went numb. There is some encouraging news today about a dog we told you about a couple weeks ago, who put his life on the line for his owner. Butterball came home today after more than three weeks in the hospital. He was seriously injured earlier this month when he was attacked by a pitbull. He apparently thought the pitbull was attacking his owner and ran to his rescue. Instead, the Pitbull attacked Butterball. He had extensive surgery and ended up having to have a leg amputated, but Butterball is expected to make a full recovery for something so big and so slow, the meandering manatee of the Chesapeake Bay is proving very slippery. Wildlife experts have been trying for five days now to catch the large aquatic mammal. And as Alex Demetric reports, they are worried the manatees skill as an escape artist could cost the animal its life. How many humans does it take to catch a manatee? Apparently, more than I've been hitting the Chester River this week. Right now he's he's become very wily. He's he's he knows what he's doing out there. But the manatee that has wandered into the Chesapeake Bay and settled in around Kent Island is a master at hide and seek. Just ask anyone he's popped up behind. You look like an alligator swimming across the top of the water. All I could see was his head, you know, and he headed right towards me. But then when this big boat came out, they said he can't move very fast, but, I mean, that's Jasper. He flipped that old tail and he was gone. Boats right here where we think we can start deploying the net, make a circle around him from the outside so he can't a little longer get out. But circling the manatee takes a lot of net, a lot of time, and a lot of people. Meanwhile, the manatee can hold its breath for upwards of 15 minutes, and regardless of how slow it swims, it still moves faster than the people trying to catch it. And even the spectators on the dock know that could mean trouble. Supposedly, they can't take the cold temperature because they live in Florida, and you would figure it could with all the blubber it has, but apparently it can't. Even with all the insulation, blubber provides a manatee. Experts say the cold water still makes the animals more lethargic than they usually are, and as they slow, they may eat less, dehydrate, and die. It becomes an increasingly greater concern that the animal may or may not have enough time to get to Florida before the water temperatures do drop. Experts believe the manatee followed warm water and grass north into the bay last July. The problem is, there is still plenty to eat and a section of bay loaded with boats, which pose a danger to manatees and a big body of water.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981#t=1931.19,2026.05"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981/transcript/71319/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It is growing cooler every day. Now we have a case of a gay man living with his partner, who's asking for overnight visits with his daughters, who are three, six and nine years old. To achieve this, he says, he will not tell the girls he is gay. They're just little kids, he said. They don't need to know that. Well, most child experts would agree with him on that. They would tell you that trying to explain homosexuality or heterosexuality, for that matter, to a 3 or 6 year old is not appropriate. But some of those working on behalf of the gay minister insist that if he doesn't tell his daughters he's living a lie and that, they say, would harm his daughters more than telling them the truth. What nonsense. If anything, we tell our children too much at too early an age. We flood our children with information they can't process. And sad to say, we seem to do it more for our own peace of mind than for our children's. I'm Alice Steinbach. Thanks, Alice. Now let's head back to the Eyewitness News room. Now, Sanders joins us with the latest on some of the stories we're still working on for six. Hi, al. Hello, Sally. Healthwatch reporter Kelly Lane has some surprising advice from dentist bottle stories. And a lot more coming your way tonight at six. Now let's head back to Sally. All right. Thank you very much. We're back with Charlene Cross, who is the senior exhibit specialist at the Maryland Science Center. Thank you for joining us, Charlene. She is, going to give us a bug's eye view of an exhibit that's coming to the science center. Tell us about the exhibit. Well, the exhibit is all about bugs and insects, and, it allows us to get really close to them. Something we wouldn't ordinarily want to do. But we're all kind of curious about them. They're fascinating creatures. There's, all sorts of wonderful things that you can learn about them. So you don't always dress like this. Oh, well, we should. We need to show your wings. All right. There you go. You earned those wings every day. Yeah. But, and there's, actual specimens that you can look at, including tarantulas and black widow spiders and so forth. So there's, as I said, things that you wouldn't want to ordinarily get too close to. But why is it important for us to know about tarantulas, for example? Well, there's an interesting fact about bugs in that, half the people that have died since the Stone age have been from insect bites. So it, behooves us to move into the shadows to learn a little bit about them. But, they do good things for us, too. Like pollination. That couldn't be done without insects. But the, fun part about the exhibit is that everything is blown up larger than life.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981#t=2843.72,2940.05"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981/transcript/71319/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So you can get in there and find out how they make sounds and how they eat. And, what did you bring? I brought with me an example from the, very large, honeycomb that we have that shows the development of a bee. So we know that they aren't this big. So you can see that this is an egg and this is the small larva in the larger larva, and then the bee right before it would come out of the honeycomb. Now, what ages is the exhibit for? Well, this exhibit, like most of the exhibits we bring to the science center, are for all ages. They're for children. There's things there that young children can do. They can put together insects and models and so forth, and touch things and touch things around. Oh, they're encouraged in the honeycomb to put things in and out. And there's a wonderful, as for instance, you can create your own pattern on a butterfly wing and then look at it. So there's things and then there's interesting, as I said, the specimens and so forth. So there's information for all ages, right. All right. And one last thing on the table. You did. Well, I'd like to give you your honorary antenna. I'm honored. Thank you. Oh, okay. I thought the other one was for John. Well, you can have a very attractive, once again, the. Marilyn. Only 141 passengers and crew members appear to have survived one of the world's worst shipping accidents, despite a massive rescue effort by ships and planes from throughout the Baltic. There were precious few survivors pulled from the cold and windy waters. Most of those were nearly unconscious from hypothermia. Some had severely broken bones, and they were lucky, somehow surviving a night of sheer hell. I had no time to think, said one. I just ran, ran, ran. The survivor said he was awoken when a table in his cabin turned over. It was already hard to get out on the right hand listing side. There were people on deck who were just not strong enough to save themselves. Nearly 50 bodies were recovered today. Most likely the passengers who thought they had a chance of grabbing a vest were making a desperate swim toward a lifeboat. Most of the nearly 1000 on board remained on scene, 250ft below the surface and a massive steel coffin called the Estonia ferry boat. The Estonian run ship seen here in recent pictures, had huge doors at both ends to allow cars and trucks to roll on and roll off quickly. Today, this surviving crew member claimed that he saw on a closed circuit TV monitor water coming in through one of the big doors. He's he's he knows what he's doing out there and which which makes it all the situation a little bit more difficult. It's hard to believe anything so big and so slow could be so wily. Was right here where we think we can start deploying the net, make a circle around him from the outside so he can't a little longer get out. Better to keep their mouth fairly closed and just go in safely while the lips are out and do it. That relaxed position and the child and the pair are probably going to have an easier time. An easier time brushing, which helps create a much easier time with the dentist. Cute kids. Now make sure you use a fluoride toothpaste during brushing, and also keep your kids away from sweet and acidic foods like soda, candy, fruit, roll-ups, and raisins. I was surprised with the last two, but they get caught in the grooves of your teeth and can cause cavities. All right, so what about kids who hate to brush? I mean, how do you inspire these kids other than, I guess, offering to take them to Atlantic City to see Merv other than bribing them? Right.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981#t=5751.89,5849.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981/transcript/71319/annotation/58","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You got to make it fun. But if by some chance Rick Dempsey were to become the next manager of the Orioles, this would certainly be one of the most popular hires that this franchise has made in a long time. In the last a. Or rather, in the 11 seasons the Rick played here, Phil had developed a following about the size of Pennsylvania. Enormously popular, very gregarious guy, seemed comfortable meeting people and schmoozing and doing the entertainment bit, and also a very productive player. But as Rick pointed out today, it is the popularity with the paying customer that could turn out to be one of his biggest assets. If he gets the job, it's a big plus because it's a whole lot better having 47,000 people in the grandstands pulling for you. That's an emotional edge. Maryland's notoriously high closing costs keep many people from buying a home, or at least make it a lot more difficult. That's why Gelfand has some tips on saving money at the settlement table that people don't know. But there are plenty of ways to to cut that cost when you get to the table. The problem is nobody advertises them, you know, nobody talks about them. Most of us don't have too much experience at buying homes, so we're told what to do and what to pay. And we do it without asking too many questions. But the answers can save you plenty. The business of real estate settlements is big business and today a very competitive one. Don't be afraid to shop around calling title companies as well as law firms. You'll find big differences in prices. Some lenders used to charge a fee for allegedly walking through the property. With rare exception, these so-called lender inspection fees are now illegal. That's the tax imposed on the value of the property at the time it is transferred. Now, if when you settle on the property, it already has a house on it. Well, the value is this big in the taxes. This big. But if you go ahead and settle instead on just a vacant lot while your value is smaller and your taxes will be smaller, you can also save some property taxes at the table, thanks to a new law that requires you to pay only half a year, rather than a full year's taxes upfront. But right now, it's only effective in Baltimore City and Harford County. If you will live in the property, there's no transfer tax on the first $30,000 of the purchase price. That works out to about $150 savings. You can get a credit on the cost of title insurance if the seller's had title insurance, but you've got to get that policy from the sellers and bring it to settlement. And you might also ask your lender if it will allow you to pay your own homeowner's insurance. That will save you the growing of that money when you settle. So the law says that only Baltimore City and Harford, Baltimore City in Harford County, you only have to pay half a year's property taxes upfront. Why just Baltimore City in Harford County? Well, what the legislature actually did was it said any county in the state has the right to require that only half the taxes be paid up front, the only two counties or the only two jurisdictions that have done it so far, or Baltimore City, which is trying to encourage people to move in in Harford County, which said, maybe we need a competitive edge here.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981#t=6648.59,6741.44"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136393/file/252981/transcript/71319/annotation/67","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So, as I understand it, though, this coming legislative session, what's going to happen is you're going to be a new law introduced where it would just apply statewide.
