It's back to school today for half of Maryland's public school students, including kids in Howard County. Education reporter Kai Jackson joins us now with more. Sadly, the summer comes and goes so fast to be young again. It does. Yes. The summer vacation does go very fast. A new school year opens in Howard County for kids. That means the long summer vacation has come to a close. I like visited a lot of places and stuff, so that's like in the lunchroom. We always talk about stuff like that. For some parents, the start of the school year means peace and quiet around the house, though some find it hard to let go. Parents say with good reason some of my children, throw up the night before, you know, they get very nervous. So I think we just underestimated. We don't understand that. It's a very anxious time for them. A lot of excitement, you know, just, hard, getting them to sleep last night and that kind of thing, but, they're raring to go. This morning. There was plenty of excitement as the busses pulled up and running. Brook elementary students and teachers were anxious to see familiar faces. You have Missy? Yes. Great. These are. Yeah. Big year. As students and teachers ring in a new school year, the bell is also a reminder that it's time to get down to business. Well, it's fun because I get to meet my new teacher. I got to get used to it again. Had to go to another team, go into another classroom and have a new teacher. It can be tough for kids trying to adjust to a different teacher, but it can be just as hard for the teacher adjusting to a new school. Oh, I'm very wound up. So what's going to happen is that the the bus drivers essentially are going to have to get used to where they, where they need to go. But about a week or so, maybe two weeks or so, everything should be in full swing. All right. And then they'll be counting the days until Christmas break. Yes they will. Now, for students involved in the state fair must scramble to adjust, but they're getting a little help from the county school board. Of course, when the decision was made to open school, we'd have been a little bit happier if they'd held off and waited till the 48 hours were finished at State fair to open school. But they have cooperated with us very nicely. Students who missed classes because of state fair related fall activities won't be left out in the cold, so to speak. They'll get formal excuses. Yes. It's been here for probably, 6 or 7 years and never had any problems. Never had any problems. Danny Abner is a safety consultant for the fair, and in his ten years here, he says this was a first, a key like this one that holds part of the ride in place was either pulled or kicked out. This is actually a key as well. Scott holds this pin in this pin right here is what vibrated out and made the tub come loose. So it fell off the road. No, it did not fall off the right. The left cable had held it on okay. Yeah okay. But it it did pivot on the sweep. So it tilts it over. I mean yes, all of the keys have been replaced and are now considered tamper proof. There's nothing wrong with the rides. There's nothing wrong with this ride. And even for some who heard about the accident, the lure of the rides remains irresistible.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136387/file/252973#t=1202.36,1296.74"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136387/file/252973/transcript/71339/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It's just when they go so fast, you get just caught up in the excitement. Hi, Sally. How are you? Fine, thanks. How are you? Doing real well. Looks like you found a real winner here. Now, it doesn't look like conventional ice cream, but does it taste like it? Oh, it's far superb. Superbly regular ice cream has that. It has less air and water in the product. And it just gives it added flavor when you quick freeze something very, very quickly. You remember what mama used to tell you. You can quick freeze corn or beans, and it gives it a better flavor because you trap the flavor in. Maybe that's what's happening to Dippin Dots. And hopefully you with a little bit of hope in there, some sun and some water and maybe some good luck, you'll have your lawn looking this good. Also in about two weeks it should look like this. This was, planted. The seed was planted exactly two weeks ago using pretty much the same methodologies. It's a nice topsoil seed. Covered it with a little bit of leftover grass. I had actually, the stuff you cut, and it's nice and looks real nice, so I'm waiting for a can't look. Can't. Chris has a question for you, Bob. This summer's been remarkably, wet. And it had great rainfall this summer, so I don't imagine there's gonna be a great deal of problem with various lawns. They're not brown like they usually are this time of year. This. I mean, it's been this summer. Early on, it was hot, and it was not particularly good for lawns. So since the last 4 or 5 weeks, we've had some wonderful rainfall. So the grass is in really good shape going into this fall. Very few lawns are in the brown dry conditions, so the ground's nice and soft now. It's a real good time to get these little bare spots filled in. The grass itself will start to grow and fill in those bare spots with some proper nutrition. But if you've got big spots, you just want to make it look like this. Now's the time to rake it up, turn it over, put some seed in Tampa down and wait for some water. Put some water in or. Today's rain was just perfect. I mean, probably if you put some grass seed down yesterday, you could probably germinate by by Thursday or Friday. Okay. Thanks a lot. We'll see you back inside. He loves that stuff in Utah. There was more dramatic testimony today in the trial of 19 year old Jason DeLong. Suzanne Collins is live in Westminster with the latest. Suzanne. And al, the critical element here in this testimony is, was Jason DeLong insane when his mother, Kathy Farrar, and her boyfriend were murdered? The testimony has revolved around his childhood, about alleged physical and sexual abuse, and also about his bizarre behavior over many years. Today, Don DeLong, who fought on and off for custody of Jason over 19 years, testified about his son and he told a story of a neglectful mother who was mentally ill and allegedly practiced satanic rituals with her son. Don DeLong had his son, Jason, for a short time when he was a boy, and again for about a year when Jason was a teenager. Well, I'm completely outraged by the way that Bill and Kathy died, and. I don't believe that there's any reason in the world to kill a human being and take a life like that. Was there abuse as far as you knew? No, not Kathy's part. Now, the defense argues if the jury finds Jason committed the murders, they should also find him not criminally responsible. They point to the fact that his mother was even charged with neglect, and to a doctor's report that Jason was physically abused by his mother and an earlier boyfriend, and his punishment. They held him and took a cigaret butt and made the marks on his buttocks with a cigaret butt. Two teachers will testify that they think Jason was a very disturbed child. According to the defense, the teachers will testify that as far back as third grade, Jason confused reality with fantasy. One teacher will testify that Jason once threw a desk across a room in the classroom, explaining that the desk had exploded. They had a suspicion that he was being subjected to sexual abuse, but they had no way to confirm it. But they definitely thought his actions in school were decidedly weird. Amy is one of 250 Carroll County students taking part in this year's State Fair. Of that number, 100 are expected to miss one or all three of the first three days of school. Amy's invested a lot of time and care in this summer's fall season then competition. She hopes she and her mom won't have to make the same decision next year. It always was after Labor Day, and to me, that's when school should start. Now, for students directly involved in competition here will be excused from their classes. Also, those people who are relatives of students participating here can get an excused from their principal. But if you aren't taking part and you don't have a relative taking part, I'm told by the school board that you'll be considered truant. And that's an unexcused absence. Maryland Republican C Ronald Franks campaign for the U.S. Senate made some news yesterday when Franks raffled off an ASSAULtrillionIFLE for more than $17,000. In his commentary tonight, Michael Oscar asks, is this the kind of news any candidate wants to make? Well, the money was pretty good, but I think the message that's being sent out is not so good. It's hard to tell if Ronald Franks gave his campaign a shot in the arm or some other part of the anatomy, looking for some campaign money and some easy publicity. He raffled off an assault rifle and then stood in front of Bob's Coins and Gun store in Annapolis yesterday, and drew a winning number from among nearly 4000 that were purchased. Franks wouldn't tell anybody the name of the winner, too controversial in light of all the flak he's caught over the nature of the contest. We're locked in a siege mentality from all the gunplay across the state. Every candidate's looking for money and name recognition. But Frank should have understood the symbolism and the danger better than this. Instead of running for the U.S. Senate, he should join the rest of America and run for cover. I'm Michael Alaska. Thank you. Michael. The buyers reasoned that that wasn't their problem because they had paid the builder, but their lawyer told them that once may not be enough and they may have to pay again. They wrote, I told him that couldn't be. How could I pay for the same work twice? Our law isn't like that, is it? Well, as many homeowners find out every year, it is in order to protect workers and suppliers whose sweat and materials go into our homes. The law gives them what is known as a mechanic's lean until they have been paid in full. The fact that you may have already paid the builder for the work is irrelevant, until the money gets to the worker or supplier. There is a lean. There are new answers tonight about why U.S. Air flight 1016 crashed two months ago in Charlotte, North Carolina. 57 people were on board. 37 died. It was clear from the beginning that violent weather was the cause. What became clear today is that the pilots never knew what they were flying into. We have two reports, beginning with ABC's Lisa Stark. In the minutes before the crash of U.S. Air flight 1016, the pilots were clearly concerned about the stormy weather, asking the tower how the pilot of the plane landing ahead of them had fared so smoothly. But at about the same time, an outbound U.S. air flight number 806, was worried enough about the thunderstorm to delay its takeoff. And I just like we were gonna start right on top of the Earth. Yes. I just think I will go to for a while. Almost two minutes later, the tower issued a warning of dangerous wind shifts and downdrafts, known as wind shear, for the northeast quadrant of the airport. Once you are northeast to land, 190 at one. But U.S. Air Flight 1016 was in the northwest quadrant, more than a mile away. One minute later, a wind shear alert was sounded for the entire airport.
