So now we'd like to get a kind of behind the scenes look at Michael. As you researched your book. Michael, what did you learn? That was maybe a tidbits of information that we didn't know about Michael before, as if there's anything we don't know already. Well, he's covered quite heavily in the media, as you know. There's very little that he does that doesn't get the public scrutiny. I've been following Michael's career since 1969. I'm from Detroit originally, so I'm a very big Motown fan. So I remember one night in 1969 watching the Hollywood Palace and the Supremes announcing they discovered this fantastic new group in Gary, Indiana, and there was little Michael Jackson with his brothers just ripping the stage apart. And I've been a fan of his ever since. And I think that I feel like the rest of the world does. I feel like I've grown up with Michael Jackson. I've watched him develop and really become the biggest superstar in the last 25 years. He's even eclipsed Elvis Presley. I want to remind our audience at home that you can join in our conversation with Mark Bego by calling 41, 30, 31. Mark, I want to ask you, did Diana Ross and the Supremes really discover Michael Jackson? Well, to tell you the truth, Gladys Knight and the Pips discovered them first, but didn't get the recognition that they needed. Berry Gordy wasn't looking for more acts for Motown Records at the time, and it was two years later, in 1968, when Diana Ross was in Gary, Indiana, for a political rally where she was going to be the entertainment with the Supremes. And she saw the Jackson five opening for this particular convention.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/78035/file/165304#t=1650.06,1735.02"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/78035/file/165304/transcript/47242/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And she said, I've got to get Berry Gordy into this. And she invited them to come to Berry Gordy's mansion in Detroit. And that's where the Jackson five had their audition around Berry Gordy's pool. And there were the Marvelettes and Marvin Gaye and the Temptations. And that's where they audition for Motown. And Berry Gordy was just amazed at the talent that he saw before him. How old was Michael at the time? He was approximately eight or nine at that time. Now, you know, it looks very, very easy. Now there's this 25 year old superstar world known as dancing, moving, singing and so forth. But it took a lot of hard work, didn't it? Oh, it certainly did. You know what's so funny is a lot of people think, well, how can someone 25 years old have such an interesting story? But when you look at Michael Jackson's life, he's been doing this since he was five years old. 20 years. It's amazing. It's just amazing. I spoke to a lot of people behind the scenes that had seen Michael grow up and had worked with him. One of the people was a disc jockey in New York City. His name was Frankie Crocker. And Frankie recalls seeing a little Michael Jackson at the Apollo Theater, backstage in the wings, watching James Brown on stage and going through all the same motions that James was doing on stage. You know, it's very interesting. I was I saw James Brown last night, and I just happened to notice that James Brown did a series of turns and I heard a lady three or four rows down say he's doing the Michael Jackson. I know it's the other way around. Michael Jackson is doing the James Brown is Where is Michael Jackson and and Peter Pan Begin? He is the little boy that doesn't want to grow up. And with the kind of money he's making, he doesn't need to. In fact, he is now having Disneyland remodel his home. He is bringing Pirates of the Caribbean, the ride into his own living room. Well, what is this? What is this? This is a part of his his fantasy world. Is he in touch with reality? Well, I think, Jackie, that Michael feels he really hasn't had a normal childhood and really hasn't had a time to to really express a lot of these fantasy type of ideas that he has and really has been an adult since he was five years old, doing a lot of adult like show business things. And I think that's one of the reasons that he and Brooke Shields get along so well together, because both of them have grown up in the spotlight, sort of soul brother and sister. Exactly. They don't have to explain these eight folks with me or my bodyguards. Okay. Our callers at home would like to talk to you. Great. Okay. Hi. Would you like to talk with Mark Regal? Yes, I would. Please do. Okay. The other day, I saw a so-called religious individual on the corner of North and Fremont Avenue on a PGM system. I mean, through the P.A. system condemning Michael Jackson as being crucified. And she was saying how our kids were imitating this guy and that Michael Jackson's soul was condemned to hell once and for all. Oh, my goodness. Is Michael Jackson gay? Well, that I can't answer. I buy all the research that I've done. Michael is a devout Jehovah's Witness and does not believe in premarital sex. And I think that he really is just developing and really hasn't made any decisions in that direction. So I think that we are kind of assuming that he's gay because he has a high voice and very delicate mannerisms and things of that nature. I think so. And he was really emulating what rock and roll was all about. Elvis Presley 25 years ago wore mascara on. Age. Little Richard was wild and flamboyant. Michael is just continuing in a flashy show business trip. Little Richard, is that good? Well, that really doesn't help my point, does it? My old swivel of their hips. It's true. It's true. And it certainly has hasn't hurt Michael Jackson's career one bit. I know that a lot of Jehovah's Witnesses are sort of upset about this. They feel that their religion shouldn't necessarily be represented by someone that who's whose credo is don't stop till you get enough. Okay. We're going to talk about some of the other things about Michael that are rather strict adherence to some of the morals of the day. So we're going to get into that when we take a break and come back with Mark Figure, the author of Mike Tyson. Oh. All right. We're back with City Lights. Special salute to Michael Jackson and author Mark Bego, who is the author of the book called Michael. Mark, what has the Thriller album meant to both Michael Jackson, the whole Jackson family, as well as to the record industry in total? It's amazing. And really, Michael Jackson's Thriller album crossed so many musical taste barriers and age barriers that everybody had to have that album around the world. And he really has put CBS records back in the block as far as finances and really has brought people back to the record stores and opened it up for everybody else for new artists to like Boy George and Cyndi Lauper. What about sales of Thriller at this stage? At this stage, it's in excess of 30 million copies, making Michael Jackson's Thriller the best selling album in the history of recording music ever. How about the singles off of it there? He's also broken records with that. He is the first artist to have four top ten singles with his Off the Wall album, came around with a Thriller album and had seven top ten hits the back of that album. He keeps breaking his own records. It's just amazing. Today, we surpassed 25 million copies or throw out Michael Jackson. That's. I do not know how. Primarily, I like his dancing. And I love Michael Jackson. First of all, that there is have have Joe and Katherine Jackson separated? They haven't formally. There were plans to. But I think that the sons and daughters were very upset that their parents would break up. And I think that they are staying together basically to keep the family unit together. About the role of Joe Jackson in developing the Jacksons. Well, to tell you the truth, the way the Jackson five started out was Joseph Jackson in the late fifties. And Gary, Indiana, had his own group called the Falcons and basically didn't reach his expectations for a musical group. He put his guitar in the closet and went to work in the factories in Gary, Indiana, and came home one day to find his sons playing with his prized guitar. And he said, Listen, Tito, you better be able to play that or put that back. And the sons went into the act and the Jackson five was suddenly born. And from that point on, Joseph Jackson took his sons around and really encouraged them and shaped their career and really made the Jackson five. Did he push them against their will, though? Not at all. And in fact, he was very proud of what his sons were doing and thought that that was something very constructive for them to be doing after school and really had a future for them. Okay. Oh, he definitely does. His house is quite large and he lives there with his two younger sisters or his two the two youngest Jackson sisters, Janet and Latoya and his parents. He has his own boa constrictor, his own llama, his own two pet deer. He has sheep, cockatoos and a whole menagerie of other animals on the lot. So he does definitely have his own zoo there. So when they get together, they they can just relax and be themselves. Okay. We've got another question from the audience. Mark, it's so nice to have you in our city. Oh, thank you. As a radio announcer, I'm interested in knowing two things. What will the social significance of Michael Jackson be and how will history record him? Well, I think at the moment, if things continue the way they are, he's going to be the biggest entertainer of the whole century at this point. And I think his contributions in music are really even being eclipsed by his concern for his fans and for humanity as well. His recent gesture of donating his song Beat It for the drunk driving spot on TV and radio to warn young people about the dangers of alcohol. He's very concerned about people, and I think this is a revolutionary new thing for a show business personality to not be destroying himself like someone like Elvis Presley did. Michael wants to be an example for young people around the world, and this is one of the reasons I'm so proud to have written this book in case in case you didn't recognize the voice or the face. That's Jane Russell, who's program director at WBB Radio. Thank you, Jane. Thank you. The loosely positive effect of Michael is something that really can't be overlooked.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/78035/file/165304#t=2769.29,2858.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/78035/file/165304/transcript/47242/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What are the chances of Michael going Hollywood? Well, I don't think so at this point. He's been in this business so long and hasn't been affected negatively by that. I just hope that the pressures that he's under really, really don't change him at all. And I don't think that they will. Okay. Let's bring in our home audience again. Hi. Your live on City Line. Good afternoon. Hi there. I have a question for your guest. I would like to know. I'd like to know if the the surgery done to Michael Jackson. I'd like to know if it was done, what was done exactly and was affected in his family. How many others in his family received the same surgery? Are we talk about the cosmetic surgery. We're talking about the surgery after the fire or cosmetic surgery. Okay. Thank you. Well, Michael did have his nose reshaped. If you look at the pictures in my book, The era of 1978, 1979, his nose was a little bit different. And I think that Latoya was as well. This is just my opinion. And looking at the photographs, Michael has also gotten very much into some theatrical makeup as well. So he's changed the structure of his face with makeup a little bit to give it more angle. But the fire also caused some surgery to happen. And I mean, that was a very devastating period for for Michael. Absolutely. But what they basically did was cut out the scar tissue so that and then so the two pieces together with that that have hair follicles in them so that he doesn't have a bald spot on the back of it. Isn't it funny in the picture of the fire that kind of looks like he's got a heel? It's very strange how that is very ironic.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/78035/file/165304#t=2859.23,2954.51"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/78035/file/165304/transcript/47242/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So he's doing well from that? Absolutely. It was laser surgery, which is a revolutionary new way of doing it, and he's recovered totally. Tell us about the personal Michael Jackson. I've heard people who love him but who seem to be concerned about what appears to be a kind of morbid nature or a very sad and lonely, you know, lonely attitude or whatever. He has expressed this a number of times in interviews with different press people on TV and in magazines. And in a way, I think he does feel sort of trapped by his celebrity status. And yet I don't think it's affected him really adversely. He does get a little bit lonely and claims that he loves to talk with his talk, with his animals talk. But I think he's got enough friends. And again, okay, we're going to talk to our home audience again. Hi, you're on City Line. Hello. I have a question for your guest. I was I have heard many times I've never actually read it myself or seen it on TV, but I've heard rumors that he takes psychotic female hormones to keep his voice so high. And I notice he does have a very high voice. Is this true? No, it isn't. It's it's really a rumor. And he's really worked to develop that higher range of his voice and really hasn't worked on his lower register at all. So that's basically just his development. You can confirm that it is not true. Well, the rumor keeps persisting. I can't find any factual evidence that it is true. According to Mike, Bingo, it is not true. Now, let me ask you, what can Michael do to follow up on a thriller? How can he beat that record or can it? Well, I think he's doing a very wise thing by preparing the victory album with his brother.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/78035/file/165304#t=2955.38,3057.32"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/78035/file/165304/transcript/47242/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So the spotlight he will share with his family. So he is not under that pressure to immediately follow up Thriller when he's got the tour coming up. That's true. And I think his next big project is going to be the Peter Pan movie, and I think that he will be a movie star. He's going to be this generation's Fred Astaire. I really believe he can be anything Michael would like to do at this point. He certainly can. And we know he's going to produce the movie at Steven Spielberg. And Jane Fonda has a hand in it as well. All three success oriented folk. Okay. One quick call. Hello. Hi. Quickly, I want to ask Michael and Diana Ross can not do any more records together. And I also like to note, is Michael playing? Not doing any more acting? Oh, he will definitely do some more acting. I think he's going to branch out with this movie. I think the video is just preclude what he's going to do. And there are no plans in the works at the moment for him to record with Diana. But three weeks ago, he went to the recording studio with Mick Jagger for the victory album. We'll wait for that. Thank you, Mark. Thank you. You're with us. I'm going to check in with Michael Glass. It's been my pleasure. Come back. Thank you for the contest. Keep voting. Death. If you. Well, we're going to continue our salute to Michael Jackson today with a special video presentation of Michael and Paul McCartney and their top hit saves.
