Good evening. I'm Deborah Stone. Denise Coke is on vacation. Christopher Adolph was hit and killed by a van after the youngster darted out into a street last Thursday. Tonight, all Dale has the painful story of Adolf death and the lesson his family hopes others learn. Sometimes the pain just won't go away. You know, that agony is sharply as Janet Adolf in Jamestown. Last Thursday, eventually her son Chris, when he ran into the street. It hasn't sunk in yet, really, because right now I just you know, I love my son very much. And everybody did. And it's just like I looked up to say, I don't know, Janet. Adolf has the type of neighbors who won't let her deal with the tragedy alone. Friends and neighbors painted a large goodbye poster for Chris. Dotted with personal messages and flowers and neighbors. Mostly, the kids raised almost $390 to go toward Chris's funeral, and they wanted to collect Hans money, pick out the collect money and parents. We went our groups with them and we let them do the talking and then door knocking. We were just there for support. And that support apparently counts for a lot and have friends and neighbors and relatives and they give this kind of love. Makes a hardship like this much easier to bear. Much easier. Some of the kids who signed the poster may not understand what it's for. Skippy Crane says there's a lesson to be learned. And ironically, it's one his friend Chris is trying to teach him. Neighbors plan to leave the memorial poster near Eastern Avenue for the next week. Congress paused to remember Texas Representative Mickey Leland today. Congressional aides lined up in the Capitol to sign a guest book for Leland's family. Then many of them went to an emotional memorial service attended by some of Leland's aides. For three months or so. I would say that even as the service was underway, word came that continued stormy weather delayed recovery of Leland's body and those of his party for another 24 hours. Leland is being remembered all across the country. In Baltimore, a former congressman and a rabbi who both worked with the Texas representative, shared their thoughts with Richard Share and Leland Howe. When Mickey Leland came to Washington, Maryland Congressman Parren Mitchell was already there. They became quick friends, says the former congressman serving as members of the Black Caucus. In the early 80s, Congressman Mitchell and Leland traveled together to Ethiopia on a hunger mission. They visited a refugee center not far from where Leland's plane crashed. People gradually came down from the mountains and they were rubbing their stomachs in their mouths. They were hungry for the story. And I think making it and some of the others just did hold back tears. It was just so tragic. Everybody would have been touched by that. But he was especially sensitive on this issue of hunger. And I think it probably hit him harder than it hit the rest of us. Last month, Congressman Leland wrote a letter to Rabbi Murray Saltzman. Midwestern farmers, on the other hand, are still plagued by dry weather. Today, President Bush made a major commitment to help during farming emergencies. All day the city, 67,000 public schoolteachers happened voting on a new three year contract. As education reporter Debbie Wright explains. This ends a very long and very tough negotiations right now. Debbie is standing by live at the poly western complex where the ballots are being counted. Deb? Well, our city public school teachers are just wrapping up their voting on a new three year contract. The three year contract will raise the starting salary for city teachers to $20,520 a year. It will raise the average salary to about $34,000 a year. Of course, the voting was going on all day. It started at about ten this morning as teachers seemed pretty anxious to cast their ballots. What do you think of the contract? Well, it sounds pretty good. All day, teachers filed into the auditorium at the Poly Western complex to vote on the new three year contract. That took all spring and summer to hammer out. It calls for 8% pay hikes for the first two years, a wage opener. The third and two items teachers were particularly interested in no added teacher duties and no added health care costs for this year. Any other question? So even though the salary hike is not the 10% the teachers wanted, most we talked with feel that it's the best offer they could get and that the pact will be ratified. I think it was pretty fair and I'm hoping that everything worked out this year. I'm looking for a nice raise. That city did the best that they could and I think our union did the best they could. So I'm really pleased right now. One of the reasons why most predict that the pact will be ratified is because the third year of the contract calls for the city to take a look at salaries of teachers in surrounding counties to start moving city teachers toward parity. Both the mayor and the superintendent have given to the very last dollar that they could, and I think that is the reason that teachers are being very receptive. The voting ends at 6:00 and a count should be available shortly after that. This was, of course, a very long, drawn out and difficult negotiation for city teachers. At one point they were talking about going on strike and their all contract had to be extended. We demand more arrests, but make no demand for more jail space. We seek increased rates of prosecution without concerns for increased inmate populations, and we call for longer sentences without calling for larger prisons. In his commentary tonight, Michael, Oscar says attorney Abraham Crockett could be disbarred. We'll go to the top court in the state now and they'll find out what's going on. The case stems from two firemen, Henry Hartman and Charles Brown, who were injured fighting a blaze at the Cambridge Iron and Metal Company. They sued the company for not warning them of conditions inside the building. They won. They were awarded more than $600,000 in damages. But their attorney, Abraham Karate, got 75% of it, about $470,000. Now we have a Baltimore County judge, Dana Leavitt, calling the fee clearly exorbitant and sending his opinion off to the Court of Appeals for a final hearing. For his part, Attorney Carracci says there aren't any clear rules. Limits on how much an attorney can charge. So how can anybody say he charged too much? Well, there ought to be one clear rule. Mike and the family is here with us, too. Of course, you can see everybody. This is kind of a tradition for you all. And you could use the backyard a lot. A lot. I mean, holidays, birthdays. It's a lot of fun. Weddings, weddings, receptions. You rent out? No. What was your inspiration for all this work? You put a lot of work into this. Just have a lot of kids and just something to do. So let's take a look at it. We took some shots and literally we'll take a look at the pool. It's a pool. Got a little like a squash court back there or a tennis court. Volleyball. It's fun. Well, thank you, folks, for being with us this hour. Let's take a look at what's going on weather wise. We do have rain across the region. Temperatures across the area generally in the upper 70s, low 80s, depending whether or not you're getting showers are high. Officially was only 82. And you can see the low basically upper 60s across the region. Southerly winds tomorrow, 7 to 14 miles an hour. Now keep bringing in warm, moist air from the south. Let's take a look at our radar and you'll see shower activity basically from about western suburbs of D.C., north and east, just west of the city of Baltimore, moving into Pennsylvania and some heavy showers in southern Delaware and all of southern Virginia getting some pretty good rain. All this rain now moving to the east northeast. So in Baltimore, it appears that the western suburbs are getting ready right now and we're moving toward the northeast across the city over the next few hours. And there's a chance we'll get some more heavy showers later on tonight as the stuff in Virginia begins to move from north.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136078/file/252480#t=1451.75,1547.69"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136078/file/252480/transcript/70816/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"A regional radar shows you we're in part of a larger area of rain that extends way down into the south, especially over portions of North Carolina with some heavy rain activity there. So we're not out of the woods once we get to the showers. Tonight is a good chance of more showers overnight tonight and again tomorrow of more showers and some thunderstorm activity across the region. The entire East Coast basically from Connecticut down to Florida, dominated by a very warm, moist airflow. Lots of showers and thunderstorms breaking out across the region. More showers in the upper Midwest with a frontal system. However, it appears that front will never make it to our region until the end of the week. And in doing so, it'll help increase more showers by the end of the week. I think the only time we'll have a chance of very few showers, maybe on Thursday, but by Friday you pick up once again as that frontal system approaches. You see that wave. That area of low pressure down or south that's going to help to bring up all this moisture off the Gulf and the Atlantic Ocean. And we'll just be in this very warm, sticky, muggy, humid and wet pattern. Most of this week, temperatures generally in the 80s in the east. Cooler temperatures in the 70s across the northern Plains. The hot stuff from Texas, west with hundred plus in the desert southwest for the next couple of days. The forecast then for our region not too great. We've got showers and some thunderstorms. There could be some heavy downpours across the region. A low near 70 degrees overnight tonight and for tomorrow, cloudy, not much unexpected tomorrow. More showers and some thunderstorms. Once again, we could see some heavy downpours in some areas.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136078/file/252480#t=1548.64,1635.92"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136078/file/252480/transcript/70816/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Tomorrow's high in the low 80s with all the cloud cover and just about the same forecast expected for Wednesday. We just finished remembering the 20th anniversary of the moonwalk. 20 years ago, some of us on the ground witnessed a spectacle in its own right. It took place on Max Jasper's dairy farm in Bethel, New York. It was known as Woodstock, and it brought 400,000 people together for three days of rock and roll. A young Baltimore student named Bob Gold documented Woodstock sights and sounds in this super eight millimeter motion picture film while he was a student at UBC. Today, Bob Gold is an assistant professor of visual media at American University. Watching his old school project today brought back memories. Got a couple of friends together. Was tough, actually. A lot of people didn't want to go. A lot of people locally decided that it wasn't going to be any big deal. A recent editorial urged Howard County residents not to support efforts to bring to a referendum a cap on new home building permits. Responding is Tom Hartman, chairman of Citizens Against Bill 43, with another point of view. Howard County Council Bill number 43 and Growth Management was passed in an atmosphere of panic and pressure. The bill is unfair. Ultimately, we will exclude our friends and our own children from the county while providing open space at taxpayer expense to owners of three acre lots with $500,000 homes on them. Residents should support a referendum in the upcoming hearings on a new general plan. A referendum will allow us to calmly discuss the way to fairly distribute the burdens of growth management.
