Hi, I'm Jackie Hall. And I'm Betty Bentley. Whether it's a romantic cruise in the Caribbean or a trip around the beautiful British Isles, there's a great escape for every exciting taste and interest. Join us as we discover from travel agents Jim and Jacqueline McLean, this summer's greatest vacation spot. We'll find where to go or will not to go. Where? A first class holiday. How real is the threat of nuclear radiation here in Maryland? I'm two moms here. And today on News Corp, we take a closer look at the topic of radiation. Is there need for concern? Hi, Harold Anthony with you? And today it's a double blockbuster video feature. Stay tuned for the systems. This is for you and Rene and Angela's. You don't have to cry. It's a two for one special right here on the entertainment phase. Today, Sullivan will also take a lighthearted look at the guide to the official puppy handbook. Joining us will be its authors, their own Kathryn Staples. But first, city Lines, great escapes. Up next. Good afternoon and welcome to the city Line. We're getting set for the summer traveling season, so we thought we'd get a couple of experts here to tell us where to go and what we should do to get ready to go. I can introduce to you Jim and Jackie McLain. Thank you for being here. Thank you. Where's where's the trip this year? Where is everybody? Beating on the doors to go anyplace but Europe and France. Isn't it awful? Yeah. But right now, believe it or not, a lot of the locations are right here in the good ol USA, the Caribbean, which has always been a very, very hot spot with a lot of people.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=39.72,159.35"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And just just this in this country where people are boarding planes now is there? Most definitely. I think it's a trend that's spreading throughout the country, in fact, throughout the world. We just had last week a group of 252 cancel because they were going to Ireland and nobody wants to go to Europe. And that's terrible because the dollar is very strong in Europe. Now's the time to go. Now Great Britain and some other countries are making it, and British Airways and so forth are making it quite enticing to them to travel there this summer. Is that going to happen, do you think? Well, it's so bad. As a matter of fact, British Airways is giving away on one day in June, 5000, 5000 seats free. Everybody who wants to go can fly. They're charging there. But you have to fill out an application. That's all you have to do. In all, 5200 seats on British Airways will be given away June the 10th. That's a matter of fact. Yeah. And then it's another little neat things like trip free trips on the Concorde for a year of stocks and bottled it just unbelievable. But I think they're trying to show people that if you go to London or to to England, it's not as bad as that perception might be that it's going to be the end of the world if you end up going to Europe. And the money, like Jim was saying, the money is right. You know, especially if you go to if you go to Europe. Jackie, you mentioned the Concorde. I just want to say it's the ultimate trip. I mean, a normal trip to Europe is about seven or eight and a half hours when you can fly in two and two and a half hours.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=159.92,243.08"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I mean, it's a great way to go, though. Jet lag is such one of my favorites. If you get a chance to pick up a shot late, I bought a picture of the Concorde so that everybody could see it. This is really the way the ultimate vacation you got to do that you will get. That is right. Twice the sound of what it sounds. You got to travel. Yeah. Yeah. It's unbelievable. What has the negative effect of the European vacations done to help or hurt other vacation spots, particularly again, in this hemisphere? Well, you can't get a seat to for the next three or four months. You can't get a hotel room near the ocean. You can't get into Vegas. And right now, I understand Atlantic City is the hardest thing in a country. Does it make these places more expensive? Yes, it does, because what used to be a rack rate or an off season rate is now high season rate and more. So that $39 room that you normally spent last year in Las Vegas, it's now going anywhere from 90 to $125 a night. So their take, it's definitely taking advantage of it. But but by the same token, I think it's a good opportunity for people to just see the country that they live in. I think it's wonderful to be able to go to Europe and all those sorts of neat things. But but it's just great staying right here at home and seeing a lot of lot of things. We've got everything. There's a lot to see in this country by people. One of my favorite stories is we were in Europe about six years ago and person asked me, if you're going to the United States, what would you see? Very, very Got it right there. You got it right? Yes. Yes. Now, now that everybody is going to stay away from Europe, you're you're predicting now for the summer. And so what what will this mean in terms of when one should make reservations for travel either here or Hawaii or the Caribbean or wherever? To be honest with you, they should have made their reservations last year. However, for those people like me who like to procrastinate, it's not too the now, depending on what your what your budgets are and exactly what you want to do, how long you want to go, a person can spend anywhere from $200 a week to whatever the limit, you know, $10,000, whatever they want to spend and everything in between. I'm saying, but but you have to remember something. A lot of people when I said that you have to plan last year, a lot of people what they do, they put money aside just to take a trip. In fact, it's not unusual for people to come into our office and they tell us, look, here he was $25 or he was $50. You keep it for me and I'm going to play. Yeah, they are cheap vacation. So you can go to L.A. City one day for 31. So you think 30,000, you do it. Exactly. Let's look at some of those spots that we might have an opportunity to visit. You brought along some slides. Let's look at those. And there's been some other issues that we'll raise is making want to really wish to be okay with what do we have here? You know was a at the gambling table. Somebody is in Las Vegas trying to lose some money in the Bahamas. So when you go on vacation, we suggest that you set aside the amount of money you want to lose, not the amount you want to win. You want to lose, put in your pocket, decide to give it away and have some fun, like going to a baseball game. How's Las Vegas going these days compared to Atlantic City? Vegas is still getting more conventions and that's my favorite spot right there. Eating. That's a favorite. Looks like the Caribbean. Oh, that is a bit of a Nassau, the Bahamas and to Freeport. That's an right. That's a view from a balcony. You can't see it, but it's overlooking some of the inner harbor. There are not many in the Bahamas. Now, will it be difficult getting to the Bahamas or Jamaica this year? Well, some of that's pretty good. A lot of hotel rooms and a lot of villas. Some people do play golf. I think the next few shots are sports shots. That one is golf and, of course, tennis. And I think there's one there for scuba. That's a very interesting sport, if you like, in those were shot in Hyannis and my favorite pastime back again think some people go with conventions and of course, we show that conference room because that's one of the things you do by traveling with a group. There are several national Baptist Elks, all those, but traveling with them, of course, you reduce your costs. So if you have a member of your family that belongs, it's a good idea to travel in the group only do's and don'ts about getting into package tours and so forth. No other than just deciding exactly what you want to do. There are some people that like to go on vacation sightseeing for those people. We normally make certain recommendations, but for those people who just want to go get away from it all, they know do's like that. You can lay on the beach and have a good time. Okay. Now tell me some of those little known great pack. They're in Mexico. That's one of most. What's the range there? There again, you can go anywhere from 399 for a week. That includes your airfare and your hotel and your accommodations. Yeah, sure. So Cancun, wherever you can find one. Nassau has always, always has been real good. Jamaica is a very good yeah, Jamaica's good. Hawaii. There's there's Jamaica right there. That's a villa in Jamaica. And of course, you can go that way rather than stay in a hotel room. And not only that, this is also a good price for people who want to travel with their family or friends, things of that sort, where they don't mind sharing a house, for example. What kind of range we're talking about there. In that particular case, that's up to more than $50 a night on that. But there again, even with the $50 a night, you're sharing that price with a number of other people. And it includes also in a villa, a maid and a butler and a chauffeur. You have your own swimming pool and your own privacy out there. Now, how do you make arrangements for that? Should we go to an agency now that you're going to go ahead, say that it's never go away for season seven when. Yes. Really? Is that the only way to go? That's the only way to go. That's the only way to go. No, really, you should have an agency. And I'll give you a quick example. I wanted to. Things that happen. If you call up, let's say an Eastern airlines and Eastern doesn't fly there. They're not going to tell you, by the way, Delta flies there. So you've got to make another telephone call by calling the agency that represents all of the airlines and all the hotels.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=664.11,746.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Then, of course, you have the one answer, the one package put together. And there's a way, by the way, it's very popular to ship. In addition to that, you have charters that if you go directly to an airline, of course, the airline's not going to know about a charter. So the only way you're going to find out about those charters is to get in contact with an agency. Do you save money by. Oh, great deal. Yes, great deal. Yes, a great deal there. Again, some of the things Jim just pointed out, the carriers are certainly not going to tell you about charter plans. They're not going to sit down and research the best hotel for you to stay in, especially if you're working on a budget. Most people, if they feel very, very intimidated when they walk into an agency and they don't think that they should tell them how much they want to spend it, that's fine. I'll be very honest and upfront for the person. Look, I only have $250 to spend on a week's vacation. Tell me where I can go. And this is what I would like to do. At least you're giving that person, the agent, an opportunity to come up with some ideas for you agency that save your money. We deal with probably 75 wholesalers where we buy rooms from at a reduced rate. Airline is not going to go through 75 people to try to determine they want to save you money. All they want to sell you is an airline seat. All right. So I was looking at some of the some of the slides that are being shown now are that's onboard ship. Yeah, that's the room that a normal person. It's tiny bunk, bunk beds, that type of thing. You know friends of mine who've gone on cruises say it is the most fabulous experience ever. The height of luxury. Yes. You have some people that say that type of luxury, fabulous experience would not do anything else, because then you have other folks that say, no, this is key. I want to I want to see if we can hold that one for a minute. You see the airplane at the top and you've heard a lot about it's called a 747. And just to give you some perspective, I go in every time I get on it, and I guess I've flown 100 times. The airplane is longer than the Wright Brothers first flight, and it's taller than a six story building. So it gives you an idea to size the plane. This is first class on there, and there's a stairway that goes upstairs to the second floor where you can seat another hundred 50 people if you want to have dance floors and bars and all of things on the airplane. So it gives you some idea of the extent to which I just go crazy. What I see that not only that, I was just sitting here looking at the audience. There was one young lady out there that was shaking her head, No, but believe me, when you get on this airplane, it's five stories high. So if you can go outside, look at a building count, five stories, that's how tall it is. But it's like sitting in this room. It really is. You don't see anything except the blue clouds. You don't want to see that put your shade in your living room. It's great and you want to order anything you want. It's like a restaurant. And we just flew recent to Australia and we had five meals in the year before the flight landed for 17 hours. So you carry all those people, 400 people, feed them meals for 23 hours and never land. It's great. So what's the best way to do it? Sounds to me like flying to use the best way. Oh, definitely. You have an opportunity to really take advantage of of all the time that you possibly can while you get to your destination. And that's the most important thing. And one of the thing I wanted to just mention to people, the people always come in the office and they say, Well, I've got to stay at the best hotel in town. You don't you really don't have to stay in the best hotel in town. Why spend your money on accommodations when you can take the same money and go to different restaurants, do some sightseeing tours, buy new clothes for yourself, you know, so the people back home aren't going to know that you stayed in, you know, X, Y, Z Hotel as opposed to a Hyatt or Hilton or Jackie's. Right. So just know be economical in that we have found on vacation people spend less time in the hotel room than any place else, yet they spend more money for the hotel room than anything else. Everybody must. When you take off vacation. I think I picked up my daughters. You must have a passport. It's got a country. Please make sure you get this. No, wait to the week before. Before you fly. The passport is ultra important and you're going to need some foreign money. Every country, most countries don't use dollars You do in the Bahamas, but you have to convert. So you should have at least a pack to go away about $10 so you can get from the airport when you go downtown. The other suggestion I was had I would hand is that you invest little in a small calculator and one that would convert the money if you can. If you're going to do shopping, it'll fit right into your pocket. You can whip it out and of course you can punch in pesos. It'll convert it to dollars or vice versa. That way, if you're going to shop, the local natives won't get you for your bucks. But we can. We still have time, though, to make arrangements for a trip in July or August? Sure. Yeah. We'll make space for you. And thank you. And the good spots are good spots are Jamaica, the Bahamas. Hawaii is a must do it now because that right now, this year, that's really the best bang for your buck. Hawaii is about the place to go, but only one of those places, but especially Hawaii. Well, Jim and Jackie McLean from the slides and your enthusiasm and your calculator and the passport and all that. We're ready to go. Excellent. Thank you. We know what the beat up stands for. Right. Characterize them. Well, the black professional is someone who has gone to school, of course, and, you know, received an education sometimes on to get greater degrees, graduate degrees and so forth, has achieved a good job, quote unquote, and a certain measure of financial independence. And as a result of that, financial independence is able to purchase some of the nicer things in life. I also like to point out to the formal education is true, but also the tradesmen are carpenters, are electricians, are plumbers. These folk make a lot of money. These folk, if it weren't for them, part of our economic stability would just be down the drain. And so these these are black urban professionals. These are but these and also we like to point out being a Buffy is an attitude of having a very plus, plus a positive attitude about life. Knowing a little bit about your history, being comfortable with your present and being excited about the future. We reject but reject the crabs syndrome. You've heard the Mexican crabs. All right. Hey, no, we don't pull people down. We may not agree with you. We may not like you, but we say go for it, you know? Now we want to ask, what about the look? You know, you've kind of divided the handbook into some very interesting chapters.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=1367.68,1483.45"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And one of the chapters deals with the look, the bumpy look. What is that look? Well, the puppy look is basically one that deals with what the the magazines call investment dressing or the classics. Everyone likes to buy, buy things that will last for a long period of time. And even though puppies tend to buy labels, we like to say that we don't buy labels just for label sake, but because they're better clothes and the last longer. And as your momma used to tell you, it's better to buy one dress that's going to last a long time than two that are going to tear up in the washing machine. So the puppy is concerned about quality. Yeah, I do seem to remember something about the about 100% something, 100% wool. So that's a bad thing, right? Right. What are some other characteristics? Puppies, in terms of dress about the male may have two jogging suits. Of course. They must be Gore-Tex. You just wouldn't go out running without a Gore-Tex jogging suit. Of course. There's the three piece suit. Standard blue gray. Of course. Your blazer, Your camel camel slacks. And I noticed a potential puppy here even had his initials on the back of Saddam Hussein. And they tell me that there's a certain Kobe has her own issues on her. Hold on her. We will leave her name now. What about the bumpy abode? The bumpy home is where you reside in a variety of areas that you don't have to live in the suburbs. Some prefer the cities. As we point out in the Bumpy Home chapter, you may reside in an area which was once called a ghetto, but is now known as the renovated row house and the condo. Right.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=1484.2,1597.93"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And the realtor has subsequently raised the price as a result. But you're into renovation and staying within your neighborhood and promoting and developing your neighborhood again, part of that positive attitude in terms of where babies live. How much does that relate to the lifestyle? I mean, we mentioned about the refurbished rowhouses. And so what about the the bumpy who lives in the middle class neighborhood? Is he trying to blend in more than the others or is he just going for that affluent lifestyle, living life? And he's. Comfortable about who he is. He doesn't have to explain. He worked hard. He sacrificed. He went to school. He still, by and large, participates in his church, still active in the NAACP, still a member of that fraternity and sorority. And he recognizes that were it not for the civil rights movement, were it not for the Marcus Garvey, were it not for the Martin Luther King, were it not for the Malcolm X, he would not be where he is now. So he has not forgotten his roots and he's not running from black. Oh, no, he's excited about life. We like to say that you haven't forgotten from whence you came and. Sounds familiar, right? And you know that you're not in a particular job. You're not at Xerox or IBM or in city government or anyplace else because you're so slick or you're just the greatest thing to come out of Harvard. Howard. Okay. Let's take a break about the Muppets, ask more questions. We have to do some work here. So I'll take a break and be back in just a minute. It's the new. Be careful. I'll just see you when we are busting. We're back talking about the official puppy handbook. I don't know if this gentleman is a puppy or not, but he seems to have a question for our Buck Rogers.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=1599.14,1815.31"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yes, sir. Yes, sir. I just have one question. I would like to know, where did the term puppy come from? Where did it start it? Well, originally, naturally, it's a spin off from the term yuppie, the young urban professional. No one really knows what the source is. There are a number of newspaper columnists that claim that they are the authors or the creators of the yuppie term. And Buffy is just sort of a natural outgrowth of that because it refers to black people like to point out to when Jerry Rubin's that he wanted to be become the spokesman for this new group of young, upwardly mobile wives. He he used that term first, it's reported in New York, and then it fled to the coast. And that's that's pretty much our understanding of it. Now, let me ask you something. Our puppies, black faced yuppies. No, indeed. Absolutely not. That's why we wrote the book. Right. And because there is a yuppie handbook out and we and that was one of the inspirations for the writing of the Buffy handbook, because there was one page devoted to black people with in essence, says that puppies or yuppies in blackface. And we say that that is not true because puppies realize, number one, from whence they came and their rooms and so forth, things of what we refer to, and they know the source of their strength. Are you a puppy? Yes, I am. Okay. You know, you have to be a puppy to ask questions, right. To be classed as a puppy. What income range would you say most puppies are in? Well, I don't like to define define a range because we again, like to point out that Buffy ism, if you will, is more of an attitude about life, more so than than a specific income.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=1815.72,1916.4"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And I like to point out to as for non one said and not to, you know, get into philosophy but he said once one is familiar with the art and literature, the culture of his society and he was speaking of France, he becomes a Frenchman. But isn't it pretty much a kind of a middle class? Income while it will finance financially. Yeah, it is that. But everyone is striving for something more. Everyone in the black everyone period. Human rights are striving for more, but in the black community you're always striving for a better lifestyle. Let's talk about the bumpy ride. The I got to say about this bumpy ride. I mean, for the most part, we're talking about BMW as we're talking about Porsches. We're talking about Jaguars was in fact, you can have a Cadillac. Now, brothers don't get upset. You can have a Cadillac, but it's got to be a second car. Okay. You know, for most guys, you know, you probably consider yourself for the older fellows. A sporty old dude with the JAG. Okay, Now, one of my favorite chapters in the Bubba handbook is the bumpy family. And I love the names that you say that generally characterize the daughters name. Meghan, Ashley, Blaire, Alexis, Melissa, Jennifer, Mickey, and Tiffany. We think those are those are popular names for the eighties couple. In fact, if our son had been a daughter, he would he would have been a maiden by his that are these cute little names. I think they're just names that that reflect a certain amount of affluence and a break away from from tradition.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=1916.82,2017.99"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/18","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I think also what we're finding with the the boppy phenomenon is that for the first time in our history, America, the white or non-black society is saying, hey, you are an American. So now you're a black. Urban is the center of commerce, the arts, etc. and professional is the highest level you can get. Now we say we're black urban professionals, and the dominant society is saying, Hey, you are black urban professionals, you have certificates, you have license, you are doctors, lawyers, etc.. What is the ultimate symbol about the ISM? Is there an ultimate symbol that says you have made it? You are an official. It is the official symbol on the front of the book. And we want everyone to take note of it and identify with it, because there are T-shirts and various paraphernalia that are available. Now, there I've read the book from cover to cover, and I've seen what characterizes bobbies, according to the handbook. I float in and around many of these, but I'm not quite all of these. So when when is one a bumpy and not a bumpy and a total. Well, these are about, you know, it's sort of like religion. You know, you're saved when you get to heaven. And what does that mean? Let me go on to your next reward and someone defines who you have been. You have arrived at heaven. I mean, you can't be all of them. You just can't be. You remember we wrote it again because there was it was a negative attitude out there about us. And we think that it's probably the only plus plus book that's coming out of the black community today. And it's fun. It's not a treatise it's not a a philosophical expletive on our history. It's just fun, fun, fun, enjoyable. All right. The introduction says it's tongue in cheek and we don't want people to take it too seriously. But at the same time, we think that the positive point has to be made, that there is this positive element in our community. How can we get our hands on it? The book is available in the general Baltimore, Washington, D.C. area in particular, and be dealt in bookstores at the Mr. Town. I believe it is where I sit town I'm sorry, at the Columbia in Columbia, Maryland, and Concerns Bookstore in Connecticut Avenue in D.C. and Security Square in Baltimore. What do you look forward to? Just even more positive elements. I think that Buffy's are always looking to improve themselves, you know, by reading, by traveling. The couple who was here before the prime example of Buffy and puppies do travel. They get away. Right. We like to think, too, If you're a puppy, help somebody. Right. You know, you came to wherever you've come to, but not by yourself. Someone showed you the way. He encouraged somebody. If you can't help them financially or direct them, give them a good word. We're not quite sure. Oh. Thank you for coming by, Bear and Catherine, say thank you for having us. The writers of the official Buffy handbook. We're going to take a break and come back with two months here in the NEWSROOM. Good afternoon. Topping today's news, cap nuclear radiation can be a frightening subject, especially when one considers the devastating impact radiation can have on the health and life of human beings. After Russia's Chernobyl nuclear accident, recently, reports of low level nuclear radiation directly attributable to Chernobyl have turned up throughout America, and that includes Maryland. Joining me now to talk about the concerns of nuclear radiation in our atmosphere and the things we consume is Ray Feldman, public affairs officer for the State Health Department's Office of Environmental Programs. Mr. Feldman, thank you for joining us this afternoon. You're welcome. How threatening are the levels of radio radiation that's been detected in our atmosphere? Is there need for concern? No, we we got very lucky. We were wondering shortly after the Chernobyl incident whether the United States at all would see any levels. And after about two weeks, we gradually began to see some levels showing up over on the West Coast. That gave us a few days to think. Well, then maybe some of this radioactivity might head for Maryland. That did happen. We have an ongoing program where we monitor air. We monitor milk. We monitor rainwater just for this purpose to detect radioactivity of that might be out there in the environment. This is not something we had to start fresh or start new after the Chernobyl incident. This is something we've had ongoing since the seventies. Your office has been getting questions, I understand, from concerned citizens and pregnant women in particular, about whether or not they should breastfeed their children and whether or not they should consume milk.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=2228.05,2432.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"How real is that concern and what kinds of levels are we detecting in our milk? We are finding very low levels. The equipment that we have is so sophisticated and so sensitive that if there's any radioactivity present in the atmosphere above what is considered the normal background radiation, the equipment picks it up. But there is a huge difference between what is detectable in the environment and what is of concern or dangerous in the environment. You have detected that. We have we tested, but the levels are so very low on the scale that we would have to have thousands, literally thousands times the level that was levels that we're seeing now. For it to be concern to anyone. Do you have an approximation of how high or how low those levels are now in our milk and milk supply, for example? Radioactive iodine is measured on a yardstick called Pico curies per liter. It's a very technical term that we use to measure radioactivity. We are seeing levels in milk in numbers of like 20 to 25 pico curies per liter. We would literally have to be in thousands before there would be any kind of concern or any worry. And anybody in the health department that this would be a risk. So we're of we're a long way away from being there, and we don't expect that to happen. What we expect to happen is that over the next week, maybe less, these levels will begin to slowly decline and drop off to the point where we just won't see them anymore at all. And that hopefully will be the end of any sort of Chernobyl impact that we've seen. Are those low levels being detected in any other source that we may consume? Is it being detected in our rainwater? And what about our fruits and vegetables that are exposed to the atmosphere and rainwater? Well, I think it's safe to say that that it's probably showing up along the food chain.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=2434.19,2550.74"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/22","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It starts out being visible in the air. Then, of course, it gets into the rainwater, then it gets into the milk. And I think it's probably safe to assume that it does probably at some point along the line get into the food chain. The thing we have to keep stressing, though, to folks out there watching the show is that the levels, again, are so very low, They're they're barely detectable above the trace range on our equipment. But we're so far away from from being a danger, We're kind of equating this to the danger associated with radioactivity at this level is about equivalent to the chances of somebody being involved in a car accident while sitting in their driveway, in their car at home. It's just very, very slim. We don't want to alarm anyone. But what about the cumulative effects or the combined effects of these low levels that are being detected in your milk, that's being detected in your rainwater, and that's being detected in certain segments of the food chain? Is there any kind of combined effect there that we perhaps should be concerned with? I think if we were talking about a long term exposure or if we were talking about lifetime exposure, I think that would probably be a concern. But again, these levels are very low. They're going to be here for a very short period of time and then will begin to decay and move out of the atmosphere and out of the environment. And there won't be that opportunity for that sort of the cumulative effect that we're talking about that you're talking about. So we don't need to really be concerned about that aspect of it. What would you recommend people do if they have questions or if they have concerns, if they have a special condition, like a thyroid condition? Who are the experts that they should turn to? Should they call your office or should they call their physician? Well, anyone you mentioned that has a thyroid condition may may be concerned, since radioactive iodine does tend to concentrate in the thyroid.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=2551.67,2664.55"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/23","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But they could call their physician or they could call me. Stay with us and have a healthy afternoon. I grew up in Baton. It may close. Gerald Anthony here. The first video that we'll see today exhibit some of the talents of two young men who make up the group called the System. I say some of the talents because not only do these guys sing, play, write and produce music for their recordings, but they also write and produce number one sellers, father artists like Chaka Khan, George Benson and Angela Bovill. Michael Murphy, who sings lead vocals and plays lead guitar for the group, was born in Durham, North Carolina. He met David French Keyboard is a native of Dayton, Ohio, while Dave was performing in a New York nightclub. Three days after the two met, they wrote a hit song, sold it, and the system was born. Our second video features an effort by two great friends who, by the sound of their names, are often mistaken for a female duo. Mr. Renee Moore grew up in L.A. and was always involved in music as a teen. He played in the L.A. Philharmonic Minority training program and later did some work with popular artists. Angela Winbush is from Saint Louis, where she played in a number of outfits, eventually doing some work with Stevie Wonder's Wonder Love Group. In 1977, she moved to L.A. and soon met Rene through a mutual friend.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=2665.48,2909.65"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/24","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The two began collaborating on material and eventually earned a recording contract with Capitol Records without any further delay. You know, never before has a national march across the United States been planned and executed by the ACP. This march that involves over 30 cities will be the first of any such endeavor. The purpose of this march is to seek worldwide support for a one person, one vote policy in South Africa. In addition, the NAACP is launching a national voter participation program that will link domestic and international issues. The march will begin June 1st in Los Angeles, California, and culminate in time for the NAACP 77th annual convention in July, which will be which will be held right here in Baltimore.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095#t=2910.31,3469.83"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/85892/file/174095/transcript/47236/annotation/25","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"For further information, contact your local ACP branch at 366 3300 or 7477 200.
