Today, Kelly McMann was buying a blood pressure cuff for her mother. But for years, her mother took care of her after she was diagnosed by Johns Hopkins doctors at age 17. With myasthenia gravis, a nerve problem that affects muscle function. You know, we were at Hopkins, and it's the best in the world, so why would we question what they were telling us over a 14 year period while taking medicine every few hours for the disease, she had increasing problems. Her mother would call 911 when she became paralyzed and couldn't breathe. I could hear everything. I could always hear what everybody was saying to me. Because you're hearing doesn't go just your ability to move your muscles. So it was quite frightening. Frequently, tubes were forced down her throat and she was hooked to a respirator. Once she says she went into cardiac arrest, she had to buy a $10,000 breathing machine with alarms and had surgery to remove a gland in her chest. I didn't have a life. It was. It was more a matter of I was just sick flat on my back. And, I would about every ten days I would go to the hospital and end up being put on life support system because of respiratory trouble. Years later, in her late 20s, Kelly McMahon was prescribed another drug to treat her increasing medical problems that was a steroid, prednisone, her lawsuit states. Ironically, that made things even worse. Prednisone, long term causes necrosis of the hip joint, and Kelly will now have to undergo orthopedic surgery for replacement of both hips. I was all bloated. Suzanne Collins, channel 13, Eyewitness News. Well, because this is a legal matter, Johns Hopkins would not comment on the case. The worst fears of a Northern Virginia couple have apparently turned now into a horrible reality. Prince William County police think they have found the body of Karen Sheldon in the Occoquan River this morning. They have not yet positively identified the dead child. Karen disappeared without a trace more than a week ago. The spot where the child's body was found was about a mile away from her Manassas, Virginia, home. The child's parents are not suspected in this case. Well, Baltimore County Police have now identified a man shot in the head outside a Woodlawn apartment complex this morning. They say he's 24 year old Antoine Barrett from North Calvert Street. Barrett was found bleeding and unconscious, lying next to a car in the parking lot of town and country apartments. Police still don't know what he was doing at the complex, but the people who live there are shaken tonight. It's getting worse out here. It's. No, it's nowhere safe. Nowhere. It's time to find a safer place to live. Because this is the second episode here. Police say someone may have tried to carjack Barrett's car. He is now being treated at shock trauma. Very nice. Right? Very appropriate. Kelly says we have to watch out for our kids mental health, right? Because Halloween can be very frightening for children. Richard. Parents need to listen to their kids and also watch for cues. Sometimes these scary costumes that kids see in the elaborate decorations can be very overwhelming, especially for those under five years old. Something as silly as a mask can cause trauma for babies and toddlers. Three year olds don't yet have the reasoning skills to make to understand the transformation from the smiling parent face to the witch. Instead of wearing a mask, experts suggest you try face paint and let your children watch you put the face paint on. Also, grade school kids may think that they're ready for the haunted house experience, but they may not be, so parents should look for a quick exit just in case it doesn't work out. And Richard nightmares. Also, fear of the dark are quite common in the days after Halloween for small children. So if the kids say they're having those things, how should parents handle those? Well, they should. Reassure the child that it's going to be okay, that it was just a bad dream. They should also be supportive and possibly leave the light on, or leave the door open for the kids for a few nights. Have a little night light, you know you'll be back later to talk about more children's fears. Yes, I will, as a matter of fact, this isn't children's fear. So this is adults. It's panic attack. Mary, is a woman who's lived alone for a long time. She lives a rather isolated, narrow life and meets, this young, innocent who is mildly impaired and falls in love with him as she is teaching him to read and, and helping him to, sort of expand his life. And then in so doing, he expands hers and they fall in love. And it's, a kind of oddball fairy tale romance that is very touching and, sort of light and witty at the same time. Can we talk for just a couple of seconds about Murphy Brown? Yeah. You Emmy Award winner, are you? What's that like? Where do you keep these Emmys, anyway? I keep them in my bedroom, where I hope they're not going to decapitate me in an earthquake movie. Nobody better get between me and the donuts because I'm staring into the middle of a real big empty. There's a little storm system down here. You see. There's the rain spreading out from Oklahoma into portions of northern Alabama. This layer of low pressure, not strong. We talked about it yesterday. There's cool air above it. And that cooler air is slowly moving into our region. It appears that as this storm moves quickly to the east, it will start spreading cloudiness across the country. You'll start to see some cloudiness developing down here. And it's headed I'll make sure I make a beeline for Virginia and Maryland over the next 12, 18 hours. And later on tonight, look for the clouds to be on the increase. And if it's cold enough tomorrow afternoon, especially up in the mountains, there will be some wet snowflakes and even some sleet pellets mixed in right here. Right now it's just too mild. But we do think as the mild air retreats, there's cool air will begin to filter in. And as a slim chance, you might see a few wet snowflakes later tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow evening, as that cool air really moves in, and that little layer of low pressure slides down to our south and brings the cloud cover right along with. Hey, Ron. Hi, Vic. Certainly a very serious Halloween pranks that happened last night. Sometime between 9 and 11:00. Vandals went to work in this Essex neighborhood. Baltimore County police tell Eyewitness News they're not calling this a prank. They are calling it a crime. Just really upset about it because I know the police are busy with this. So what are we doing? Billy Allen has good reason to be upset. Sometime last night, vandals poured paint remover on his 1976 Lincoln Continental. Cross me, $914. Get it painted. It's about two years ago, and, this was what happened. Something ought to be done about it. I mean, this was not right. Baltimore County police say the vandals damaged at least ten cars on three different streets. Several cars were hit with eggs. Neighbors getting ready for Halloween are furious. It's just devastating that, you know, we got groups of individuals coming from other neighborhoods doing this kind of damage. And I mean, after living here so long and growing up right here, we've never had that kind of problem. This pre Halloween vandalism has angered this neighborhood just off Easton Avenue. Many residents tell Eyewitness News their cars won't be on the streets tonight. Cars are expensive today. And to have people vandalize them with whether it's eggs or paint or whatever, it's very costly. For many victims, the cost will be high. And as county police search for the culprits. Billy Allen searches for answers. I worked all my life for a time, and then something like this happened to me. I don't know, I just said I'm tired or anybody. I don't care who is. Ron, we heard one man say that he thought it was some people, maybe from another neighborhood. What are the police say? Do they have any suspects at all? Well, Baltimore County police tell Eyewitness News they have no suspects at this time in this vandalism. Most of the people who live in this usually quiet neighborhood in Middlesex are blaming outsiders for what happened last night. And in these kinds of cases, they happen. They're Hit-And-Run cases. They happen very quickly. So they're often very tough kinds of cases to crack. Okay, Ron, thank you for the live report from Essex. A West Baltimore funeral home was the target of vandals overnight. The limousine at the Wiley Funeral Home had its tires slashed and windows broken. The vandals even spray painted the front steps of the building. Yeah, he had a very simple complaint. He thought he was owed another $10,000 in coverage. That's a lot of coverage. I mean, give me cover my car for another $10,000. He was absolutely right. A strong selling point with some buyers is the length of the new car warranty. In this case, six years was a major inducement. So when that got shortened, this man got angry. It was a good truck, but from time to time, Ronald Fisher noticed a problem. I would notice it would get up into around 45 miles an hour, and I would feel like a real shift. Like it was hard to go into gears. The powertrain was the apparent problem and that can be expensive to fix. But, thought Fisher, it really shouldn't be a problem because Ford trucks came with a great warranty. I thought it was covered because my warranty books that I had, if I had a six year, 60,000 miles with a $100 deductible, and I thought the $100 deductible would be all that would really have to pay. But there had been a change. The length of that warranty dropped by one year. Five years was now the maximum coverage, but no one told him that, so he was offered a compromise. The dealership would pay 10%, Ford would pay 40%, and I would have to pay 50%. The change would have been effective if the customer had been informed of it before the sale. But once the deal has closed, the terms of this warranty can't be changed. The changes may be effective for future customers, but not for past ones. It's simply a matter of contract.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136442/file/253034#t=6436.75,6535.54"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136442/file/253034/transcript/71312/annotation/62","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What the bargain was at the time the truck was delivered. After presenting this information to Ford, the company agreed and Ronald Fisher has been reimbursed in full for all the needed repairs. Well, good. I mean, that's only reasonable. Is there any case in which they can change the warranty after you bought something? Well, you say we've come across some warranties, for example, that say things like this. The warranty is good for this long period of time, provided we have the parts. If we don't have the parts for it, then the warranty is no longer effective and we agree to pay you no refund any extra money you've had. So that's one insight you pay for that. Yeah, you have to look for that. That's one instance. The other one is there used to be some car companies. I don't know if they're still on the road or not, but they used to say they could change that. The warranty was subject to later changed by the company. And if you see that kind of wording in a warranty, it's not worth $0.02, because if they have the right to change it after you've given them the money, there's no value. But other than that, absolutely not. They're bound. All right. Thanks, deck. You're welcome. It's a very happy Halloween in Manchester. That's in Carroll County for the first time in 21 years. Very nice. But you can get it, and you can read all these little intricacies about your friends and your TV here. I like this on TV Hill, not over the hill. Very nice cover. We were honored to be part of this, and Bob and I were glad not to be on. That's right. So now, yeah, let's take a look at temperatures, conditions around the region. We have a changing forecast for tomorrow. Going to get interesting 63 in Baltimore right now. And it's gonna get a lot colder as well. Folks around the rest of the area. It's still a mild day. We got into the upper 60s again 45 up in Johnstown. It did get warm again, 6948 today. Normal. 62 and 41 the cooler air still holding back to our west. But west wind should start to bring that cooler air in tomorrow. What a temperature day about 59. And we're going to start seeing some clouds on the increase tonight. Here's the Maryland watch. What's going to happen down our south and southwest. There'll be a thin band of precipitation, but it may be right through the Maryland, Virginia, southern Pennsylvania area.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136442/file/253034#t=1943.05,2035.66"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136442/file/253034/transcript/71325/annotation/89","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So there's a possibility you might see a few wet snow snowflakes tomorrow afternoon. Now, if it really starts raining early, it'll probably stay in the low 40s, like 43, 44. So it's going to be kind of a damp, chilly day tonight. Colder than last night with increasing clouds overnight. Lighter winds as well. The low 36 morning. So temperatures are going to drop rather quickly in the next couple of hours. Cloudy. Tomorrow there will be a few periods of light rain possible, even a few wet snowflakes or some sleep pellets, perhaps high of 42 to 48, low tomorrow night 35 to 38. In just over 30 minutes, kids in the Carroll County town of Manchester will be allowed to trick or treat for the first time since it was outlawed back in 1975. Back then, the town threw a big party for Halloween instead. The parents in the town council were concerned about candy tampering and other dangers. Well, tonight the lights are on and the Manchester Kiddy Corps is ready to Tootsie Roll when the trick or treating ban became law 21 years ago, none of these ghost goblins and Power Rangers was alive. Tonight's their first big treat. Are you going trick or treating tonight? How do you feel about that? I feel great. His honor, mayor Elmer Cornelius Lippy Jr of Manchester, is in his fifth term and not at all thrilled about the lifting of the Trick or Treat band. I'm still uneasy, as you probably guessed when I heard over the radio today. Sorry it wasn't television, but I heard over the radio today that Hopkins is offering free x ray of candy. Good lord, what kind of a what kind of a world we live in? I went along with it. I thought it was safe for the children because the town had a town party, and it was nice. Hey, Ron. It's simply a matter of contract.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136442/file/253034#t=6436.75,6535.54"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136442/file/253034/transcript/71325/annotation/130","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What the bargain was at the time the truck was delivered.
