I would venture to say we've got, two feet of snow on the ground. And as you also can probably see, it is still. Well, it started snowing about a half hour ago. First of all, let me tell you a little bit about the road situation in Howard County. We came down, the the Beltway was in great shape. 29 was in pretty good shape. But once we got to the area of Little Patuxent Parkway and into the some of the side streets, it is just a complete mess. And, it's very difficult to get out. We're going to talk to a couple of folks over here who've been, very busy all morning. Daniel, come on over. Just a second. This is my friend Daniel. I've seen it. He's not only dug out one car, but two. Is that correct? Two. Has this been for you to tell me? It's hot. Rough. The snow is heavy and you got it. You got it. So you doing little spots so you won't get nobody else's spot. Yeah. That is. I know about that. Okay. Thanks, Daniel. Daniel is going to be digging for a while. So is everybody on this block? We're going to have photographer Rushmore swing around here a little bit. I just want to show you the the clog of vehicles here. We really only have one lane, into this, development, at this time. Well, we're working real hard. We focus most of our attention on the side streets. Today, our people have been out, and, we're urging folks to to take it easy. It really will help if everybody just focuses in on the front of their street, you know, go from the house to the curb, do their curb. And for young people who are out helping their parents, one of the things that we ask them to do, they can participate, too, is, is after they've helped with their, curb, if they just look for the fire hydrant closest to their house and, dig the snow from around the fire hydrant so that we can expose all the fire hydrants. Most of our firefighters are out now riding around looking, for the hydrants, but it will help if the neighbors simply, make sure that those, hydrants are exposed and there's no snow around this. That's just one of the things, people can do. And also, the shelters have been open, and we've had some great stories of people staying in the, to operate these, shelters for homeless people for quite a while. But if somebody needs, to get to one of the emergency shelters, they can call three, six, one home. And, that's the hotline for, homeless services, 361 home. And, provide some, service for those people. You know, at the moment. I was out this morning, I went to be get a shelter at monument and, 2701, East Monument. So we're packing it down so that cars can get through on the side streets. But we're fighting that. And, we do know that there's some more on the way out, but it's not going to be like it was this weekend. All right, well, Mayor Schmoke, thank you very much for being with us. Thank you. Okay. So hopefully that rush hour is going to look absolutely beautiful. And we even try to make those secondary roads look as pretty as the interstates are right now. As a matter of fact, starting to get some start have started, have been getting calls from the olden scenario for about the past 45 minutes. So got a call from East Point here a little while ago. We've got this little bit of energy right here, but there is more coming toward the Mid-Atlantic from the West. Earlier AccuWeather been talking about possibly a light coating. Before we get to what the conditions are for travelers, though, we do want to tell you about an emergency situation here. Earlier, you were scheduled to open at noon. Fortunately, you were able to open a little bit earlier because the pilot of a single engine Cessna had some problems. That's why they called into us here and said he had a severe icing condition on the airplane. It was a private airplane. Fortunately, he was able to come in the runway was prepared and land here safely about 1115. So our actual first arrival this morning, was a bit of an emergency situation, but turned out safely. And first, what, a couple of minutes ago, we heard the first big engine plane go over, right? It was a noise I haven't been real familiar with since. Since Saturday. But the first departure, I understand was southwest. I know that we have others in line in the taxiway right now taking off, so we want to get back to normal just as soon as we can. Right. Yes, it was, but it's already been canceled, according to the board, so I'm not sure if I'm going anywhere today. And where are you headed? I'm headed to Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico? Yeah. Oh. Can I go with you? No, I'll take everybody. I'm going home. So how did you end up getting stuck here? You were visiting? No, I was graduating. Yeah. My parents came up for my graduation at Penn State, and it's going to be a very expensive diploma. That's all I have to see. By the time we find out where the flight is going to leave or not. Then we don't have time to get to the airport. So you just have to come in and hope for the best. Do you have to work to do? Nothing else to do but wait. Unfortunately for Brian, the first young man we interview. His flight was indeed canceled. Sorry, Brian, you'll have to wait a little bit longer. But that gentleman that we just talked to, or that we heard last, said that he's coming to the airport because by the time he makes a phone call and finds out of his plan, his plane is leaving. Harrisburg, York and Shrewsbury 21 degrees right now. Here's ready to go satellite photo. It is a little up air disturbance moving our way. Essentially we are going to be talking about two areas of low pressure here momentarily. Understand that, we're talking about a surface low, a surface low and an upper air low. And I'm going to explain why that is critical to the story here right now for our conversation purposes, just for one big center of low pressure out to our west. But, the closest area of low pressure to us is now starting to hunker down, grab a little bit of energy. Here is another source of moisture. You know, it's already pull it being the area of low pressure already pulled some moisture, whether from the Gulf of Mexico. We'll get a little insult to injury from our east. And the thank you once again is inch, inch and a half of snow this afternoon as this weather passes, as this weather system goes ahead. And this pass is owned by the region.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999#t=1212.63,1296.6"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999/transcript/71310/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But this time tomorrow, well, offshore, we're not expecting it to hang up and dump on us. So we'll just tell this low goodbye. It's a map feature tomorrow, but not as far as we're concerned. High pressure is building into the area. Sky is going to clear. It's going to get windy, though. Behind this area of low pressure. Behind this upper disturbance has once again, we'll have a pressure gradient in the area. So it's going to blow around to mark it being I'll loose snow, on trees, off roofs and, and on the ground. So we're going to have to deal with that hassle tomorrow. Then we want to turn our attention to later in the week. And we do have another storm moving our way. Right now we are seeing a snow ice rain line out to our west. And you've got to assume that this, this trend along this leading edge of this storm will continue. In other words, it's moving our way is going to be a band of snow. There's going to be a band of ice. There's going to be a band of rain. Right now, the thinking is the thinking is leaning toward more of a snow event in our area, then frozen rain or sleet, and that's great as far as I'm concerned, cause I won't tell you what. You put some freezing rain on top of the snow already down, and you're not going to get it up till sometime in May. Snow this afternoon. Once again, inch to an inch and a half of snow. And I'm not joking about that frozen rain. It would behoove you to move any snow you want to move before we get into this next episode. It's been an assault on me as well, running back and forth here. Anyway, here's our radar. It's showing a band of snow, sometimes moderate, sometimes heavy, pretty much concentrated from central Pennsylvania down to the southeast. We're doing is just passing through Richmond right now. It has just ended southwest of D.C., so we've got about another hour and a half, maybe two hours of snow. So you might pick up another inch or two. We might end up with as much as seven inches in the Baltimore area before it's all said and done in some areas. And we've got kind of a very slow area trough. The low pressure has sent over central Maryland. So it's not moving. It's not really growing, but it's just kind of stuck in the middle section of Maryland. It will eventually move out to the east, and things will kind of clear out later on tonight. Might even see the moon. So if you're heading out tonight, be advised that driving tonight is probably just as bad in some cases even worse than it was early today when things are least plowed. But now we've got this new fresh coating. So the snow will be ending temps this evening between 20 and 25. Back in the teens overnight. Sally, Bob, thanks a lot. It is like an ice rink out there. It's like an ice rink in a lot of places. Right now we're on 41st Street and you can see behind me here some cars are having a trouble getting up this hill here, just beyond Falls Road on 41st Street, on the surface of the of the other road there you can see I'm talking about a mixture of ice, wet snow and dry snow. That's what's causing the problem. Let me give you a real good example of what I'm talking about. Right here in this parking lot. You can see it here. This is the powdery stuff under here. If you have grips on your shoes, anything like that, it's not going to work out here. You got to be very careful on the g facts though. Like you said earlier, very much like a skating rink. You can see the cars out there right now, rush hour traffic. People are trying to make it home. But the conditions are not very, very good. You have some snow plows out there right now trying to clear the highways away. Most state, state crews have been moved off of secondary roads and put onto these other major highways right now to make sure they're safe, but it's not easy out there. You got to take your time. If you are in a four wheel drive vehicle, you're in pretty good shape. If you're in a front wheel drive vehicle, you can pretty much make it around on some of the, major roads. But if you're in a rear wheel drive vehicle, the best advice may be to simply park that and leave that somewhere. Because we've been out here and we've seen a couple of people trying to make it around the rear wheel drive vehicles. And unless you really know what you're doing, they can cause a number of problems. But it is very slippery. The ice and snow have combined to make basically a skating rink for cars and for people. Sally. Dan, how are the state roads doing right now? Do you have any idea where they are moving their resources as well? On to major highways. They had put a lot of their resources on the secondary roads, and they were trying to clear those out for people who are stranded in some of the remote areas of northern Baltimore County, Cecil, Howard, and Arundel County.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999#t=2021.34,2105.64"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999/transcript/71310/annotation/22","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But now they have diverted their resources onto major roads to make sure they're cleared. After all this stuff moves through, they expect to move those, those major pieces of equipment back on the secondary roads. Sally. All right, Dennis, thank you very much. I am very sure that we will be checking with you sometime during the five and 6:00 newscast. If you are parked on a snow emergency room in Baltimore City, by the way, move your car or else you will be ticketed and towed. Road crews need to plow and parked cars only make their job tougher. I know it isn't easy, but you got to do it. Oh, that is right. So I know with a lot of people kind of stuck at home, you would think there's not much rush hour out there, but there is, I guess a little bit. Some folks are venturing out without four wheel drive vehicles. A lot of them are stuck now, aren't they? Rush. Definitely brakes real quick. One problem we just had come in southbound on the Jones Falls Expressway right near Falls Road. A vehicle fire is that the ice isn't bad enough. We have a lot of cars now stopping southbound on the Jones Falls Expressway, and that's another problem we're going to have is stopping distances. Please allow a lot of extra space between you and the car in front of you. As for the Beltway, the outer loop right near the Jones Falls Expressway. An accident. There's about an inch of snow all around. 695 and it's that slushy mess this that I was just talking about. West side, East side. Doesn't matter. We still have a lot of snow cover on the interstates up toward Harford County, getting word of very poor conditions now, five separate accidents still wrapping up on 95 between the Baltimore County line and Harford County line, all the way up from the Beltway.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999#t=2106.03,2183.76"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999/transcript/71310/annotation/23","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"As for the, Eastern Shore. Fort McHenry in Harbor Tunnel Thruway, not just the tubes underwater, but also the roads leading to them. Because the Transportation Authority has such a small area to deal with in such a vast amount. So if you're going in toward the city, that's probably a good bet. Richard. Sally, back to you. All right, rush, thank you very much. Now, let's continue our traffic checks to to the State Highway Administration. Dave Buck standing by. How are things out there now, Dave? Just as, Robert Altman just said right there, we do have a slow going around the Beltway. More of a rush hour this afternoon than we've dealt with, the past few days. State Highway Administration has moved our crews, primarily under the interstate system again. Get back to the secondary road system, which is the highest priority of both systems. And, get through this second round of the snow here this afternoon. All right. Thank you very much. Appreciate. That's Dave Buck. And you can see a little bit of the, very sophisticated equipment the State Highway administration now has. Team coverage reporter Rob mattes has been in the Columbia area all day long. So what's going on in Howard County, Ron? Well guess what, Sally. Snowing again? The snow began to fall just before noontime. And now here it is after 5:00. Still snowing. I say, we've got at least, a couple of inches on the ground, maybe three inches. We're live at the Columbia Exxon, which has been a very busy place, today. Needless to say, there is a lot of snow here in Howard County, and the folks who live here are no longer measuring that snow and inches or feet. They are measuring it in frustration and aggravation. We are back in the village of Wild Lake in Columbia. The snow is as high as an elephant's eye and the digging is tough going. Car number two had about 2 or 3 hours to pick it up. Cars helping other people. And so where you can get it, I got this big mountain in front of me. They were trying to plow the mountain of snow at the mall in Columbia. Shoppers were few and far between, and the ones that ventured out had a very good reason. But I had to come out and buy a pair of boots so I can dig my car out. So that's what I did. Early this morning. The mall opened at ten, so I was first in line. There would be no lines at the mall on this wintry day. So stand by, as they say. Rich, Sally. Baltimore City firefighters had their hands full late this morning, and only this afternoon when a fire broke out in the 400 block of East 20th Street. It turned out to be a four alarm, or not necessarily because of the fire, but because of unplowed snow left by the blizzard. The fire started in the basement of 429 East 20th Street. Rebecca Parham was on the second floor. Next thing I know, it's starting to smell. So we runs and gets the keys to stop. So it's something separating the wall from the steps. Looks like it's Christmas lights, but it was fire. First firefighters to arrive knew this one was going to be trouble. East 20th Street was snow covered. Impossible to get close to the burning house. Second, third and fourth. Alarms were sounded within minutes. Yeah. Richard, this is a situation where there was an awful lot of snow on the street. The units responding could only get so far before they were stopped by the snow. At that point, they they, they had to actually hand carry a lot of their tools, a hand drag, a lot of the hose lines needed to fight the fire. And it did delay the actual fighting of this fire. We had just gotten up, really? And you could smell the smoke. You could smell it, but you couldn't see it yet. And then what? We was trying to track it down. That's when I noticed it was coming through and I said, well, let's get the kids. Let's get out of here. 35 firefighters joined the battle against the stubborn smoke and flames. So we're back a distance, and you just can't have everything instantly. It takes time, and time is of a size to when you're in mild with fire and of course with people are involved. Once again, the city had a tough time getting to the secondary streets, and they stayed snow covered for a long time and they were stuck again after jet run hoses and carry their equipment in.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999#t=2559.46,2644.34"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999/transcript/71310/annotation/28","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And of course, when life and limb are at stake, you know, that could be a serious problem. It was open for an hour and a half and some planes took off. But then it had to close again because of poor visibility. Pat Warren continues our team coverage with the story of stranded passengers at BWI. Pat, it's like a second home to you these days. Oh, it feels that way. But, you know, I feel even worse for the people who are trying to get out of here. They must have seen that snow start falling around noon, and they were crossing their fingers, hoping they were going to get out of here. And then when they found out the airport had been closed again, they're like, oh, here we go again. But there's nothing you can do about it. The runway has to be cleared and as long as it's snowing, they want to make sure that everybody gets to their destination safely. That is the key point. And actually, several flights were able to leave BWI and done very, very bad timing. Everything happening at once. And it's still snowing. So I'm a little discouraged. And the longer you're here, the more discouraged you get. We show you crowded airports on the major holidays, and we show the lines on the occasional snow days. But in the years I've been here in Baltimore, I've never seen anything like this. And. I can't answer any questions about what's been. Yeah, that's what it's going to be closed until at least 5:00 for snow removal. We're asking our our passengers to, we can put a little bit of patience and work with us because we're trying to get them out of here. Oh, and they want to go. Especially those who have been through this before. About two years ago, it was in March. We were caught in New York at LaGuardia airport for that blizzard, and we were in the airport for two for about eight hours, but with friends for two days. And how long have you been caught up in this one? Since Sunday. I came to visit my dad. I'm here missing school, thank God. But. And dad, what do you think of this whole thing? Well, it's a real experience. She's got something to write into her journal, you know, but she's happy she's missing school. She doesn't mind it that much. She's one of, what, maybe 2 or 3 people of the hundreds and hundreds of people who doesn't mind? Karen Black is here with us now with BWI. What is the status exactly? What can you tell people out there who are waiting for flights? Well, what we're doing right now is we have crews out there, we're clearing the runway. We anticipate having it open at six. We're keeping our fingers crossed and we hope to resume flights at that time. There was a meeting earlier in the day with the governor. Was there not where it was decided that if you got a two inch accumulation, you were automatically going to shut down until the snow was removed. Well, what our regulations require, we cannot have more than two inches of snow on our runways, so we have to maintain less than two inches of snow on the runway at all times.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999#t=2743.23,2834.07"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999/transcript/71310/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And as the blizzard developed, that's what we were fighting constantly, you know, trying to keep that level of snow down. And right now we're out there plowing away, and we're hoping that the snow subside somewhat so we can maintain a clear runway. And once the airport gets its job done, which is to clear the runway, you still have to contact your airline to see whether or not they are able to get flights in and out. So call before you come out here. Or you could be here for a long, long time. Sally, you're talking about the runways. Do you or, Karen Black know the, the conditions of the roads leading to the airport and the parking lots? Road conditions to the airport were perfect when we came out here this morning, which was hours and hours ago before the snow started. Have you heard about road conditions to the airport at all? Well, we've been working steadily around the clock to keep the terminal roadways open and clear and our parking available to, passengers who do travel to the airport. So we've been working around the clock, and from what I've gathered, things are going very smoothly outside. But we're just fighting the elements on the airfield at this point. There's your answer, Sally. Thank you very much. Pat Warren from BWI. Rich. So for most of us, staying out of the snow and keeping warm have been paramount these past few days. But some tenants of an Essex apartment complex are only batting. 517 families at the Riverdale Apartments have been without heat since Friday. Healthwatch reporter Kelly Lynn joins us from the details of a very special delivery. Yes, I am told this took the National Guard and the fire department. However, this woman, Sharon Keane, she made it to the hospital in time. First babies are often late. First time mom Sharon Keene of Perry Hall wasn't supposed to deliver until Friday, but her water broke this morning and at that point, her tiny cul de sac was impassable. Despite the best efforts of her neighbors, there was no way to dig out the Queen's car, and the neighbor, who had a four wheel drive vehicle, had already gone to work. So that is when the queens cried. And boy, did they cry loudly for help. 911 came out and plowed. They brought a Humvee so that they could get into the street, because the ambulance got stuck down at the corner and goldenrod and they plowed out, brought the ambulance down to here and she walked to the ambulance. She was fine. And then, they had some difficulty getting the ambulance back out. So they plowed some more and through salt and things like that to get them back out onto goldenrod. And the very grateful Queen family did make it to GM, GMC in plenty of time. And we were told that the little baby, Justin Gregory, was born healthy today at 418.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999#t=2926.56,3020.04"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136408/file/252999/transcript/71310/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"That good? So these snowplow drivers are really coming in handy. I think that, you know, we mentioned on our 4:00 program that GBM needs help from people with. Four wheel drive vehicles for the visiting nurses to visit these blizzard babies once they get home, so if you can help, give you a call. Yeah. Okay, Kelly. Thanks. We'll see you later. Okay. Well, if you have not checked your mailbox yet today, you might want to take just a peek, because you could be surprised. The post office opened again today and many mail carriers were back on their routes. However, the Postal Service says they're only going to routes that are accessible, and you are asked to clear the area around your mailbox and not to dump your snow in front of them. Many stores also open today, and for many people, left with their cupboards after Sunday's storm. Today was certainly a day to stock up and worried that another storm is headed our way. Suzanne Collins says they should have picked up some Excedrin too while they were out. Susie is live in Severna Park now, down in and around the county. Suzanne, what's a story there? Hardly any store employees worked as hard and fast as they could and tried to make it bearable. But demand was high and resources limited by Sunday's storm. Meanwhile, crazed shoppers pushed their carts outside to find it was snowing again and pandemonium reigned. Not sure is that. Yes, just taking a look in the back to make sure there's no.
