It was in April of 1984 that little Jimmy Mengenhardt Jr. was killed, stabbed, and smothered with a pillow by a man who was babysitting for him. His father had to go away, had a friend, male friend babysit for the young child. And the male friend ended up killing the child and has been convicted of that. Then, this past weekend, James Mingenhardt, senior. The father, 27 years old, was out with his wife and another couple. They were going to the McDonald's down in Brooklyn Park on Ritchie Highway. His name is 18 -year -old Troy Smith. He lives on Ascension Avenue in Cherry Hill. He was picked up in that car at a shopping center in Cherry Hill. Police sources other than Dick Malloy say that when they approached him, he offered them the gun and the spent shell and practically, if not solely, confessed to them. If you come back live now, we'll tell you that the judge here in this case this morning. continue to deny bail for Troy Smith. So Troy Smith is still being held upstairs here. Here goes a dump truck. Well, they're out of one of the more scenic locations today. 79 degrees in town and 77 out in the suburbs. The winds are from the south at 6 humidity, 81%. The barometer is 3 .0 .15, and it's steady. Well, they've got something going on in there. All right, the next high tide will be at 420. Low tide at 1012. The sun will rise at 629 tomorrow, and it'll set at 747. All right, men, you're dismissed. Thanks for watching! Let's take a look at some of the temperatures around the area right now. You believe it or not, partly sunny skies. Up in Western Maryland, Deep Creek, place to be, 76 degrees right now. It's only for a little while, though. 79 in Martinsburg, 78 out by Frederick on the other end, as Richard was down by the ocean. Might be interested, 83 degrees there. And they're calling it the humidity capital of the world down there, because it's just getting worse and worse every day. Let's take a look at our local radar. Not much to report. Got some ground clutter and very spotty showers. But that's going to be happening throughout this whole period. We'll look at the national radar and show you all the way down the East Coast. along with the cold front all the way down into the gulf states uh... they had some flood warnings down along the gulf states this morning at a tornado and excuse me a thunderstorm in toledo holy toledo fifty one mile per hour winds in that thunderstorm take a look at the cloud cover now and it's pretty well defined we got the low pressure system here kind of curls right around we're just waiting for that thing to go through there's high pressure up here in canada high pressure also down here the vermuta high and high behind it so what's happening is it's just getting lost just kind of standing still what we What I think will happen is it's going to dissipate. and finally be out of here in about 24 to 36 hours. And the fair skies from the high pressure will be with us on the forecast map. See it a little bit better, anyway. There it is. It's got another low pressure. That's a tropical depression. We're about to be on. We'll keep an eye on that for you. I'm sure Marty will mention that for you tonight. Anyway, the high pressure back here. The next weathermaker is over on the west coast, just about to come in. Excuse me, it's over in the plain states now. The cold front that will be here probably by the weekend, Friday or Saturday. So we'll keep an eye on that, too. But the end of the week. Looks pretty good. We're going to look for temperatures starting to rise. But really what this is is like a dry airline. Nice dry air back here. We've got the humidity here. So it's more than just a cold front. Once it passes through, we'll have the drier air and it should start to be okey dokey. Let's take a look at our forecast then for today. Very humid. Maybe a thunderstorm later on. And a high of 85. This is just an air mass thunderstorm. And tonight, sticky with a chance of another thunderstorm. And patchy fog when it clears up, overnight low of 72. Thank you, and then tomorrow. Cloudy, sun once in a while, and steamy. High is going to be 85. You want to take a jump in that lake sometime tomorrow, I think. But anyway, so that's it. It just looks like kind of sopped in. OK. Sopped good in. Good day to watch.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144441/file/266956#t=778.2,965.97
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/144441/file/266956/transcript/77129/annotation/50
Speaker 4: It's a good day to watch movies, sit at home and watch movies. We all want it both ways. low taxes, and high benefits. And with one in six Americans, one in six now, receiving some or all income from Social Security, it is understandable that Congress is unwilling to do anything except increase it. Of course, that brings us to the serious problem of our nation's budget deficit of which Social Security is a substantial factor. And that's why today I want to talk to you about the Castleman variety. The Castleman variety is a very, very good plum that was discovered in 1952 growing on a Santa Rosa plum tree. It was introduced commercially in 1958, and today it is our most important late plum. And you know folks, from now on, there's not gonna be too many plums, let alone good plums. And so therefore, I want to encourage you to go out and buy the castle and plumb. And listen folks, you can buy a lot of these plums, put them in a plastic bag, put them in your refrigerator, and they're gonna keep very nicely for three or four weeks. Now, when you go to market, you wanna be very, very selective. You wanna select those Castleman plums that are nice and dark red in color. I don't know whether you can see it or not, but the Castleman plum has many golden specks over dark red skin. And when you get a Castleman plum with a nice dark red skin, then I wanna tell you something folks. Thanks for watching! Just look at the color of the flesh, it's absolutely beautiful. It's gone near a brilliant amber, you might say. This is a great plum for children, I'll tell you why. Because, you know, even though it's juicy, it's not what you call drippy juicy. So, therefore, when a child picks up this plum and starts to bite into it, it's not going to drip all over his clothes. And another good thing about this plum is that it's gone near all meat. Still to come on Eyewitness News, Bobo the abuser, he has a tongue like a purple dart and just as sharp. The verdict is in the sexual abuse trial of a Rice's Town Scoutmaster. And when it comes to fighting apartheid like father, like son, we'll explain next with an eyeteam on Eyewitness News. Eyewitness News has just received an update on that chemical spill at a Union Carbide plant in South Charleston, West Virginia. Company officials now say it was hydrochloric acid that leaked from the plant. They say the spill happened at about 8 .30 this evening and was contained about an hour later. There were no injuries or evacuations. Tonight in South Africa tensions continue to simmer and boil over. Today the son of Nobel Laureate Bishop Desmond Tutu was arrested for swearing at white police officers. They were questioning an eight -year -old boy who was jailed for boycotting classes. Thanks for watching! Bishop Tutu said he was proud of his son for speaking his mind. Montgomery County and other man's emotions have gotten him a year as probation. In May, Potomac gynecologist Dr. Alan Ross was found guilty of pushing and kicking an abortion clinic protester and then stabbing him in the buttocks with a hypodermic needle. Ross was also ordered to perform a hundred hours of community service. It remains to be seen what Michael DeGiacomo's fate will be. Today, a district judge found the Baltimore County Scoutmaster. guilty of sexually abusing a 13 -year -old boy scout five years ago. De Giacomo testified that he never touched him. The 47 -year -old engineer was ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation before sentencing. He could get up to 20 years. Actress Priscilla Presley is now telling all about her years with the king of rock and roll. She's coming out with a candid book called Elvis and Me. The former of Mrs. Presley says she begged Elvis to sleep with her when she was 14, but he refused. She also writes about having two love affairs during her five -year marriage to Elvis. It's really funny, I was sitting here thinking, we got a football game, we ran a football game tonight, we got a football game next Thursday, got a football game next Monday night, and then a week after that, they start the real deal, Monday night football, and I got news for the weather is just not cooperating feeling wise. We're going way up into the 90s this week. The humidity is staggering right now. There are showers in the area. It should stay that way through tomorrow. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we could easily be hitting out at about 95. No advisers on the bay at this point. Local radar sky live right now. Closest rain to us is very, very close to us, affecting the northwest suburbs of Baltimore right now. It's been raining fairly light to moderate over the area for about the past hour, hour and a half. It's all associated with a little frontal system that's trying to press through the area. Rain has cooled things down out in the western part of the state. You look at the map right now. State map. You'll be able to see temperatures have fallen nicely out to the west. The 75 degrees now near Pittsburgh, 75 Oakland, 76 degrees near Cumberland. Look at the eastern side of the state. Many reporting stations still in the eighties are overnight low tonight. Just gonna be about 75 degrees when the rain officially passes out of the area. Things will cool down. It's kind of strange thing. Cool down to 75. But so it goes. Here's the 11 p .m. Radar summary. It's all associated with this frontal system, as we mentioned, moving very, very slowly by this time tomorrow. It will just barely be sitting off our coast. Look at the cloud cover map. It's certainly not impressive, but it is fairly hefty in that this frontal system is affecting two or three different states. Actually, now that I look at this, maybe nine or 10 different states. But what I'm trying to say is look at how wide this boy has put the map in motion by this time tomorrow night, even though it'll be sitting off our coast, expect the cloud shield still to be somewhat over the Baltimore area. Maybe you'll see some sunshine tomorrow afternoon. But in general, things just aren't going to change. It's a very weak system trying to move through the humidity is going to stay around. And once again, by the middle of the week, things are going to get hot, high pressure building in from the middle plane states. It ain't going to cool us down a whole lot. Look at the actual five day forecast. Check these temperatures out, particularly here Thursday and Friday. These are low guesses. By the way, we're thinking more realistically, maybe 95 degrees, maybe some sun tomorrow afternoon. The rest of the week doesn't look half bad Saturday. We're starting to lean toward a much better day than we have here. But the temperatures are the amazing thing back into the nineties. By the end of the week tomorrow morning, it's gonna be warm and steamy Kind of cloudy, maybe a little sun, 75 degrees. Have a safe night. We'll see you tomorrow night. In five days the calendars will turn and the Blue Jays will do their best to stay on top when it turns out to be September. Toronto tonight in the second inning. Garth Orge will knock it down the line to right field at Minnesota. He'll score Upshaw and Barfield and the East leaders take a 3 -0 lead at the Twins tonight. Watch this throw a little leather around now in the dome tonight. George Bell is the batter. He sends a long one out to right center and watch how far back Tom Bernanski goes. Makes the grab now They turn it around the other way, Mike Stenhouse is the hitter and Jesse Barfield come try to do the same for Toronto. And he grabbed it somewhere in the cellophane there, but he holds on Tom Henke with the save for Toronto, but he did give up a run tonight, but Toronto holds on to win tonight. Boston and Chicago were tied at five in the seventh inning, Detroit and Seattle have yet to score in the fourth and New York now trying to stay three back of the front runners have a one Oh lead in the fourth inning at Oakland tonight, Milwaukee clubbed. Cleveland eight to three in the second lost the front end four to three in Kansas City beat Texas nine to two with the birds club in the angels the quick closing Royals are going after it tonight in Texas the Rangers Gary Ward just stretches out and bloops one safely in the right field Pete O 'Brien got home on that one in Texas took the early lead the case he tied it on the rare occasion of George Brett Jan but gets it down to shortstop Willie Wilson got home to tie that game at one and then the Royals ahead to stay And Frank White gets good wood on this ball to left field. and Wilson can walk home and so can Kansas City, 9 -2, trying to close to a game and a half behind the Angels in the West. Peter Rose with a hit tonight, but his red machine 85 version couldn't derail the high flying redbirds of St. Louis tonight at Riverfront Stadium, Pistol Pete, probably glad this one wasn't for the record. The odds can't turn that one, and Pete'll take it anyway. And he was one for four tonight, he'll take 11 more to pass Cobb. And the cards get all three of their runs in the second inning. Terry Pendleton bluffed the steal. Bo Diaz throws it away. Any fans like with a free pass home there. And then Danny Cox shut out the Reds on six hits three nothing. The cards within two full games or two full games up on the Mets tonight because the Mets lost to Che in the six. The Dodgers had bat Mike Marshall with a single. The Dodgers came up with six straight hits off of Ed Lynch. Like Sosha gets the next one. And Greg Brock's gonna test the arm of Daryl Strawberry comes around third base. The left -hander winds and throws, and Brock's in there, 2 -1 LA. And the West leaders cruise behind Fernando Valenzuela, 6 -1, who gets his 14th complete game and 16th win of the year. So the Mets are now two full behind St. Louis in the East. San Francisco beat Montreal 7 -4. Philadelphia nipped San Diego 4 -3. Atlanta under Bobby Wine, Eddie Haas fired today, 2 -1.
