Oprah Winfrey is with us today. Right now, Baltimoreans are digging themselves out of a new snowfall, the third here this week. Accumulations of three to nine inches were reported throughout the area, and now sleet and freezing rain are contributing to the already difficult driving conditions. State and local highway officials say many of the main roads are passable, but they urge drivers to be cautious on secondary roads. The Maryland Highway Maintenance Supervisor said he had over 1,700 men using 1,000 pieces of equipment to keep the roads open. Phase two of the snow emergency has been in effect now for several hours in both the city and the county. One apparent weather-related incident involves a Conrail freight train. It derailed at the entrance to the tunnel south of Baltimore and has interrupted passenger service between Baltimore and Washington. That mess should be cleared up by 1 o'clock today. The weather also forced schools west of the Chesapeake Bay to close. Today's snowfall just adding to the snow already in the ground. Western Maryland is buried under at least two feet of snow, and at this moment, Cumberland's mayor is declaring a state of emergency in his city. Mayor Perry Smith says there are three feet of snow in Cumberlands and he wants the National Guard called out to help with snow removal. In spite of all the driving hassles that it brings, there are some people here who really don't mind the snow, for one thing they say it's pretty to look at, but as Frank Luber found out, it can also be a real pain.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149131/file/273741#t=127.77,206.46
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149131/file/273741/transcript/80276/annotation/4
Speaker 3: Shovels, and that means shoveling and more shoveling. This afternoon, it appears that U.S. Secretary Cyrus Vance has failed in his efforts to persuade Egyptian President Sadat to resume peace talks with Israel. The two men met for two hours in Cairo early today. At the end of the conference, Sadat told reporters that the door to Middle East peace is still open, but said that he has to re-evaluate the peace plans he discussed with the Israelis two months ago. On the subject of Israeli-occupied Palestinian land, Sadot said peace cannot be achieved by imposing settlements on others' lands. Sadat says he will agree to resume negotiations only if the Israeli government agrees not to tread on Arab sovereignty. Michigan's Robert Griffin says a Republican president could have made the same address. Democrats praised the president's remarks, though some legislators say the solutions Carter offered to the nation's problems were simplistic. Carter outlined his executive goals for the year ahead. He called for a strong energy bill, federal jobs programs. He asked the legislators to work on revamping the civil service system. He spoke of the need to reduce taxes. Governor Lee is right to emphasize the need for a better state code of ethics. Maryland has to erase not only its reputation for corruption, but corruption itself. We have reservations about the governor's proposals for reducing property tax assessments. Everybody's in favor of reductions, but these ought to be done in the context of overall tax reform. And perhaps that's asking too much in an election year, but it's the solution Maryland desperately needs. Mr. Lee has indicated that he has an open mind on the two most explosive issues of the session, state funding of abortions and the Continental Can prison site. What concerns us is that these two issues, with the governor not taking a stand on them, will tie up the emotions of the legislature at the expense of other important considerations. The acting governor would serve the state better by taking a stance. But it's too early to pass judgment. The National Guard has been ordered into Allegheny and Garrett counties tonight to help with snow removal. It's three feet high in many places out there. The northeast storm, which had particularly hard from Philadelphia Northwood, is probably the worst in 20 years. In New York, snow came down an inch an hour. All three major airports were closed and winds gusting to 40 miles an hour swirled around Manhattan skyscrapers, piling up huge drifts and turning New York into a virtual ghost town. For Boston, it was about the same. Logan Airport lost a battle with snow and closed, stranding thousands of travelers, abandoned cars, littered streets and highways all around the city. Some people went to work on skis. Today's storm is the third in six days for parts of the Northeast, and it has piled misery upon misery. So far, the storm has caused 47 known deaths. Traveling has been one of the worst headaches. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports in New York all closed. Most people couldn't get to the airports anyhow. Those who did might still be there. It was the same for the Upper East Coast and Midwest. Except Baltimore, BWI was open, but thousands were stranded here. Many flights didn't leave here because they had no place to go. I'm going to be out in about 10 minutes. Now, as far as I know, you've been out for about three years. Jerry, the weather's shaping up to be very nice. The only problem tonight, we've got below freezing temperatures, and some of that slush and some the water that was sitting in the puddles on the sides of the road is freezing now. And there's some icy patches. So if you're driving, be very, very cautious, OK? Currently, we have clear skies, and temperature is well below freezing. We have 26 degrees here on Television Hill. That's minus 3 Celsius. Humidity stands at 74%. It's drying out a little bit. The wind's southwest at 8, but they've been gusting occasionally to 20. Barometer, 29.83 inches. The barometer's rising. The big scene today was the storm here in the east. Large, massive clouds, as you can see, as it moved up the Atlantic coast toward Nova Scotia, dropping tremendous amounts of snow in some locations. And there it is right behind me, off the North Carolina coast. That was during the morning hours. Right now, it's somewhere southeast of Rhode Island. It's still causing heavy snow from central New York State, even parts of northern Pennsylvania, northeastward through New Hampshire, Vermont area, and into Maine. And that'll be moving into the maritime provinces of Canada tomorrow. The storm, here it is, moving in a northeasterly direction. Boston this afternoon. Had 50 mile an hour winds. They had 22 inches of new snow. In fact, they got 20 inches of snow in a 12-hour period from 7 o'clock this morning to 7 o clock tonight, which is some kind of record almost for that region. They had a high this afternoon, however, 34 degrees. It just eked above freezing. Of course, that's at the airport, which is very close to the water. New York City, around 12 to 15 inches with heavy drifting this whole region because the winds are anywhere from 20 to 35 with some higher gusts. Coming in from the south and west of our region, a new storm beginning to brew, one over Colorado and one over west Texas. And 24 hours from now, it should look like this in this location, the mysterious Gulf of Mexico. It should be picking up enough moisture to cause a wide band of snow up to about Oklahoma and the Kansas area. And this should be moving to the east. It appears that this particular storm will move from this location generally to the south of our area and then off into the Atlantic Ocean. I don't think we're going to get real heavy snow, but we should be getting snow and not rain out of the system. We just have to watch the path of that storm as it develops during the next 24 to 48 hours. In fact, I will be here tomorrow to check on it for a change. I'll be working Saturday tomorrow. 35 in Salisbury, 29 in Dover, 29 in Philadelphia. To our west, there's some flurries of snow occurring over the western part of Maryland now. 23 in Oakland with snow flurry. They have 36 inches of snow on the ground in Oakland. With blowing and drifting snow right now. 25 in Westminster, 27 in Harrisburg, 31 in Richmond. Kind of gusty winds tomorrow. They'll be picking up to as high as 25 out of the west northwest. The forecast tonight, looking for a mostly clear night, just a few clouds drifting through, rather breezy. Cooling off to 17 to 24 degrees by early morning. So there'll be quite a bit of icy conditions during the early morning hours especially. Partly sunny tomorrow, windy and cold. High of 33, tomorrow night's low in the upper teens again. Now for Sunday, we'll have increasing clouds later in the day, high of 32, and I'm really looking for some kind of snow activity by early Monday morning, and there are tomorrow's high and low tides. So, grin and bear it, we could have gotten 20 inches out of the storm. I guess we lucked out with only five to 10.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149131/file/273741#t=3195.18,3416.23
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149131/file/273741/transcript/80276/annotation/92
Speaker 17: Okay.
