Those folks have never voted for me, never will, and will always work against me. And my vote was those people that are feel very, very strongly on the other side of the issue, plus the rank and file Republicans. But I think a lot of people really were not concerned about this race. Doesn't seem and I wouldn't interpret it as an anti-gay for a move. Um, we weren't as organized in the West as I would have liked to have been. We we focused on the rest of the state and the West. To take care of itself was just a low voter turnout. And I think now you'll see the campaign really focus and focus on issues. So you don't think the fact that a unknown, a newcomer to politics did so well, surpassed your expectations, came very close to you in your own backyard? That's not a reason for concern. Well, 266,000 votes is 12% of the usual Republican vote. And that's what she got. So if you look at the overall numbers, I'm not minimizing how she maximized her voter turnout. We did not. There was apathy. There was lack of grassroots, you name it. You know, we just didn't do the job that she did. But 12% is still 12%. And that is the hardcore anti choice and anti or pro pro-life movement. And they they did a wonderful job. They're organized. They're committed. And they went to the polls. Have you talked to her? No, I haven't. I should give her a call. I should give her a call. I've been busy doing media. Sure. Are you concerned that the voters were focusing on one issue or appeared to be focusing on one issue? I don't know if they were.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114455/file/217510#t=3.58,112.63"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114455/file/217510/transcript/62053/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I think that's part of the reason why they stayed home. Those people that felt very, very strongly about the abortion issue came out and voted on both sides. The rest of the folks, I think, are waiting for the campaign to begin, which is, hey, for Casey and let's talk about issues. So I think they'll be listening through the summer making their decision traditionally after Labor Day. And I think the real key issue here is, is insurance. The insurance bill is ready to explode. Are you going to do about that? Well, I will tell you somewhat later. Let the let Bob Casey saw what he what he started, which is signing a terrible bill forcing through a very bad bill. The. What? Oh. Barbara Hafer began her general election campaign by greeting supporters at her primary election victory party, a party that was almost canceled with nearly all the odds in her favor, paper almost lost the GOP nomination. The vote turned on the abortion issue, and Hafer says those who support abortion rights have a lot to learn from those who don't. The anti-choice people got their vote out. They worked very, very hard. Their message was sent. They didn't need much money. You know, when you have an emotional issue and I've won campaigns like that in the past, when you have an emotional issue and you go out there and really organize, you can do the job. Hafer counted heavily on Republicans here in Pittsburgh and throughout Allegheny County to support her, but she very nearly lost even right here in her own backyard. Some here in the Iron City say it's a question not of politics, but a personality. I guess particularly is her style. I think she's a very aggressive woman.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114455/file/217510#t=112.93,244.77"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114455/file/217510/transcript/62053/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"She's forceful, I think. And and you have to do that in politics. She has some good sized bases. But overall, I'd say I'm not not not too supportive of her. We have our work cut out for it's not going to be easy. It's not easy to raise the money. I'm up against an incumbent. It's a high profile race. The stakes are big, but I think we can do it. If she does, Haber will become the first challenger to unseat an incumbent governor in 20 years. In Pittsburgh, March Bella, Channel three, Eyewitness News. But it's Roger. We don't need you. So we'll be back for you. I'll be back. A great pioneer in entertainment and in and for black people. Only. One. Time. He's done a lot for everything, Alan. For the music. But for the entertainment business as a whole. Talk to Black. Talked. Oh. He's just made me want to be the best that I can be as an entertainer. You know, I don't think there's anybody like. Call me Mr.. For more than 60 years. Sammy Davis Jr. Entertained millions. His unique blend of talent and will to break the color barrier for black performers endeared him to many. More Sammy means to all of us is the fact that we now have a chance to become what we want to become. Mr. Sammy Davis, Jr. Shortly before his death, Sammy was honored for his years of entertainment and commitment to helping black talent achieve its goals. Knowing that he was in the twilight of his years made the occasion all the more meaningful. It was a moving look back at one of the most talented and loved performers. I started when I was three. I won my amateur contest and that right after that my dad and will miss and put me in the act and sing.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114455/file/217510#t=245.43,407.76"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114455/file/217510/transcript/62053/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal, you. Sammy got bit by the show biz bug early and he never looked back. In the 1930s, he left his home in Harlem for life on the road. There he found racism. But unlike black performers before him, he vowed to fight it. And nobody ever did that. So you better not do that. Do you mean I better not do that? Why can't I do that? If he can do it, why can't I do it? Like that just ain't been done. This is what I've waited for. And stop me now. More than anything else, Sammy wanted to be a star. He sang, danced and acted with an energy that dazzled his audiences. Still, he was waiting for his big break. It came when one impressed fan took the young performer under his wing in the days when Frank and I first would work together. And then when he became sort of my my patron, you know, it was he saw a person to be liked but who had a tremendous talent that wasn't being exposed. Or at least this is what he had said to me in later years. Sammy's collaboration with Sinatra led to performances with the famed Rat Pack in Las Vegas. Sammy's career took off from that point. Albums, films and television appearances followed. Wade Randle, The most amazing Man I ever met. No. Three. Okay. One, two, three. Of all his roles, Sami points to the character of sporting life in Porgy and Bess as his favorite. For the variety performer to do a part like. Sporting Life is like for the Shakespearean actor to finally do that. But however, like, well, Sammy's rise to fame was quick, but it didn't come without its share of adversity, including the loss of an eye in a car crash.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114455/file/217510#t=408.48,532.66"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/114455/file/217510/transcript/62053/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Surviving the tough times gave Sammy more strength. I went through alcohol and booze and alcohol, that desire with women and all of that and drugs. I did it all before it became fashionable. I'm not proud to say it, but I am proud to say that I have been ripped. Move on with your life. I knew a man, Bojangles. And he danced for you. When Sammy entered the last act of his long, fulfilling career, he looked back with fond memories. Memories that millions share, Memories of a huge talent, never too huge to forget his vulnerability. When I do that number, some nights I get so hung up in it. One night in Vegas, they said, Oh, my God. Well, I bet it's me. That's how I'll be at when I'm 70 years old and I'll still be working. We work a little joint and I would talk about what I used to be. And that'll be the end of it, Mr. Daniels. I come back and. Asked how he hopes to be remembered when the final curtain comes down. Sammy talked not of the talent, but the drive. He tried so to not Big Top. He tried to be, as you know, meaning in all areas. He tried because nobody does it all. I was very excited to go to Germany to do the US Sol Show with Bob Hope. When I first arrived in America from Russia, I turned on the TV and I saw Bob Hope reforming and I said to myself, This guy is going to make it. And here we are at the show.
