Earlier today, Egyptian President Mubarak said he sees no way the crisis in the Gulf can end without bloodshed. The Comfort and its crew set sail a short time ago. Suzanne Collins is in Canton and has this live report Suzanne. Sandra, the international crisis in the Mideast is touching the world over and it's being felt directly right here in Baltimore. Moments ago, the U.S. Navy hospital ship Comfort pulled out of her late berth and around the bend. She'll be heading under the key bridge. She's on her way to Norfolk, where she will stop for supplies and for some personnel and then head on to the Persian Gulf. Just before she left, her relatives kiss goodbye, kiss goodbye, and wish their best to their loved ones. For those manning the ship, it's a journey with an unknown ending, all dependent on actions in Iraq. I spoke to some people earlier about heading into that touch and go situation. I'm ready. Well, there are reports of the first gunfire in the Persian Gulf tonight. Saudi Arabian sources say their anti-aircraft guns opened fire on two Iraqi reconnaissance planes close to the Kuwaiti border. The sources say the Saudis fired ten rounds of the Iraqi planes, which turned back before actually crossing the border. They were among a group of foreigners trapped in either Kuwait or Iraq. A ten year old California girl was among those on the bus. Penelope Nabokov was traveling alone from France to India when she and others were taken by the Iraqi troops. Closer to home, Mayor Berry reaches out to supporters this afternoon after yesterday's verdict cleared him of most charges in his highly publicized drug and perjury trial. In an emotional speech, the mayor apologized to the city, to his family, urging everyone to begin a time of healing And. An explosion of support filled Washington's Reeves Municipal Center this afternoon. The faithful urging Mayor Barry to get back into the race. But the mayor had other things on his mind. First, apologizing to city residents. Then Barry apologized to his wife as one person who had to see it all but understood it all. There is word tonight that the Marion Barry trial jurors were being housed in the New Carrollton motel where the FBI tried to bust Brian Treble treble alleged to have come to the Sheraton that night to purchase cocaine. But since the law was there and he ran away, he crashed into two FBI cars during his escape. Triple turned himself in the next day. Marion Barry. Juror Joseph Jalali says the jurors thought a drug bust was going down outside, but they didn't find out until yesterday that Tribble was the subject in the deal. Let's turn now to lighter news. And as Suzanne Collins reports tonight, in the past four days, police have really started cracking down. Kids growing up in Warfield, townhomes in 7CA side of life their parents would prefer they didn't see open an obvious drug dealing day and night. You could be walking up and down the streets and people just stop you and actually offer you drugs. Even little kids, you know, five, six and seven year old and five, six and seven year olds selling it, selling it and, you know, using it, too. And kids playing here don't just find slides and swings in the playground. They were out there playing a van over there and they found little packets, you know, loop active cocaine before the crack down. If you drove into this area at night and roll down the window, there's a chance someone might come up and try to sell you drugs. Police call it an open air drug market where people from outside drive in and don't even get out of their car to buy drugs. In four days, they've arrested 24 people late last night, and none of these people lived in the area. Police say they just drove over about five people on to the car at one time and say, hey, I got this. You want it? I got it. I got it. And then they get the money. They take off. Our undercover people are actually selling the drugs to these people that are coming into these communities from out of the county and from other communities in the county to purchase specifically to purchase drugs there. Police also buy drugs, and when they swoop down, they confiscate people's cars. These two were taken last night. The majority of people here tell me they're glad to see it. Well, I'm just tired of it. Suzanne Collins, Channel 13, Eyewitness News. And although the police crackdown has been underway for a year, they have really beefed up their efforts in this past week. A Seattle man found a den of drugs in his home when he returned from a trip abroad. The man had hired house sitters to watch his home while he was away in Europe. When he came home, he found syringes, dirty spoons and small balloons throughout the house. Police arrested the house sitter. Next time the owner says, he'll ask friends to keep an eye on his home. Baltimore Mayor Smoke tried his hand behind the camera today at a local blockbuster video store. Blockbuster is videotaping kids for free every weekend in August. The program is called Kid Print. The purpose is to help in a worst case scenario if a child disappears. Airport officials reporting 85, a little bit cooler than that at 83 right now. Still 85 in D.C. Lower eastern shore Saulsbury, 85 degrees. Also, that was pretty near the high temperature for the day. So things are cooling off gradually as we get into the evening hours. But with a high relative humidity, the overnight lows aren't going to be much below the mid 70s in many areas. Winds on the bay tomorrow will continue from the south southwest kicking up to 7 to 14 knots. Now let's look at that local radar and see where the activity is right now. We'll have about 3:00 this afternoon. Martin State Airport had a pretty good downpour and that thunderstorm cell is pretty much lingering, say, from the Perry Hall up to the Edgewood area. And that has been producing some showers because it really hasn't moved very much on our radar screen in the last few hours. Another pretty good thunderstorm cell almost directly over top of Frederick. And we've got some reports of some pretty good shower activity out in that vicinity. Again, these are popping up and where they will occur, there's no coherent line of thunderstorms moving through the area, which sometimes happens, but that's not the case here. Showers all over the eastern part of the country, east of the Mississippi. Real heavy storm systems continuing up in New England, Maine, New Hampshire in the last seven days has had over ten inches of rain in many locations. Central Park in New York, nine inches of rain in the last five days. This will be moving out. Notice the flow from the south with this strong, very wet system. We got into the sunshine today for the most part. Some clouds popping up, giving us those scattered storms later in the day. But what we have here is a low pressure system producing all that moisture for New England that will be out of here. But this frontal system not going to make much progress into our area. We'll continue in the warm, relatively humid situation to be a little drier tomorrow, but it's going to be fairly warm. Not all at that atypical of an August week tonight. Partly cloudy conditions with a thunderstorm possible again in a scattered fashion and is so damp it will see some fog in areas later on 74. The overnight low tomorrow, some sunshine, warm and humid. High temperature 88. And on the five day Tuesday looks like the best chance for precipitation right now. These temperatures sort of normal for this time of year. A little on the warm side, but not unusual. Good bit of sunshine. And there is 44 year old Kenneth Fuchs, father, husband and son who was left behind. But at least Linda and Leslie Fuchs, we're back on American soil. Only women and children were evacuated. We only had two days to get out. It was very hard to believe, but I just hope to get back even then. And kids playing here don't just find slides and swings in the playground. They were out there playing around over there and they found little packets, you know, loop active cocaine before the crack down. If you drove into this area at night and roll down the window, there's a chance someone might come up and try to sell you drugs. Police call it an open air drug market where people from outside drive in and don't even get out of their car to buy drugs. Word of mouth gets around that they can purchase drugs at these particular places. Police have upped their undercover operations in three problem areas Warfield, Townhomes, Meade Village and Freetown. A pleasant day of crabbing almost ended in tragedy for a Baltimore County man today. James Honeycutt of Essex was crabbing with his girlfriend in Martin's Lagoon near Wilson Point Road. He decided to go for a swim, then suddenly cried for help and slipped under the water. Ten minutes later, a Baltimore County firefighter pulled him from the water. Honey cut is now in critical condition as shock trauma. Well, almost a year ago, a bridge over the Baltimore-Washington Parkway crumbled on the cars below. Operator error or horseplay? The accident happened when two rafts were passing one another and one raft overturned. Now, to prevent that from happening again, King's dominion is increasing the distance between the rafts. A Georgia couple is dead tonight after a vintage plane they just bought crashed. The man and woman had just taken off from an airport near Atlanta in their World War two era 28. Witnesses say the plane lifted off, turned suddenly, then plunged to the ground. It immediately burst into flames. The plane was engulfed so quickly that rescue workers had no chance to pull the couple out. Vacationers headed for Yosemite National Park in California this weekend had to turn around and go home. Wildfires are sweeping through the area. More than 18,000 acres have burned to the ground so far. Firefighters are bulldozing ditches around groves of giant sequoias to try and shield them from the rampaging flames. The fire started when lightning hit the drought stricken forests. That's why it's so sad to see that is such a beautiful, beautiful park. It really is. And we're very close to that right now. Winds in the bay tomorrow will be from the south southwest at 7 to 14 knots. Now, precipitation. We did see some showers pass through the area this evening. They did pop up in the city and we got a pretty good shower from, say, oh, 8:00 to about 9:00. Most of that is breaking up, but still some scattered echoes appearing still a chance in some areas of seeing a shower as we progressed through the night. But that chance diminishes the further we go. Lots of shower activity, though, up in New England. This is finally abating. New Hampshire has had a very, very wet week. And that shows up on our satellite view. Notice the frontal system here. Now, this frontal system that moved off with that very wet system that we talked about in New England, that frontal system will be disintegrating. Coming in behind it, it looks like it's making a move in this direction is a secondary front, but that really won't make a substantial move through the region. And in fact, this front disappears. The secondary front sits places itself right along the Great Lakes and in fact will allow, as our forecast map shows, will allow the continued flow of warm, humid air into this region. It's going to be very typically August weather for the next five days or so, temperature in the mid to upper 80s with noticeable humidities. Tuesday, this little disturbance traveling along the front gives us our best shot at shower activity in the five day period. For the rest of tonight, though, here's what we're looking at. Partly cloudy skies with some fog and some of that fog has already begun to form around the area will become more noticeable as we get toward dawn 66 for the overnight low. And tomorrow, 88, the high with some sunshine, actually a little bit less humid than today, with a lesser chance of showers in the afternoon.
