Authorities are converging on the scene trying to figure that out. Investigators are focusing on one of the engineers and on a signal several miles before the crash site. We begin our team coverage with Alex Demetric standing by live in Silver Spring with the latest on the investigation. Alex. Well, Don, final answers to the fatal train wreck in Silver Spring last Friday will be days away at best. More likely weeks. Today there was very little left at the accident scene. Other than final repairs to the track bed, wreckage from the Amtrak passenger train and the marked commuter were cleared away yesterday morning. This morning, the Mark train, the first marked train since that accident happened, rolled through very slowly, passing a signal that still showed red. Investigators say they have worked their way through 50% of the signal system and have found nothing wrong with it. They do know the Marc engineer approached that red stop signal at more than 60mph, when he should have been going 30.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136410/file/253001#t=142.48,257.45"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136410/file/253001/transcript/71279/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The Marc train was under a yellow caution signal, which flashed three miles back and one station stop away from the collision. Why the engineer was traveling that fast is unknown, but at that speed, it may well have been impossible to stop in time based on raw early data. Today will have better data when we run the train through here for site distance measurements. But basically we believe that there's approximately 1800 feet from this churn that we can see right here from the bridge to that signal and our calculations. And that's the best case scenario. He would have 1800 feet if his eyes happened to be focused on the right spot when he came around, the catch the light red, and that the train would have required 2000ft to stop. So that would have put him through that signal no matter what. This evening, the National Transportation Safety Board will be conducting what's known as a sight distance survey. What they'll do is take a marked train identical to the one in the accident last week, put it on the tracks at the same hour that accident happened, and see how far back they can see that signal. This will all happened about between 5 and 530 this evening. And it will put an investigator physically put an investigator where the Marc engineer is standing, so he can get a good idea of how far away he can see that signal. The earliest possible point he could see it done. But Alex of the trying to recreate the conditions of last Friday night. Won't that be impossible because of the snow that was coming down there? Well, yeah, there was a great deal of snow obviously, on Friday. But according to investigators, witnesses here in Silver Springs say the snow had stopped shortly before the collision.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136410/file/253001#t=258.17,347.69"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136410/file/253001/transcript/71279/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"In fact, another train engineer who was sitting on a side spur, where the accident happened, said his visibility was clear all the way down the line to where the where the collision actually occurred. So they think that they'll be able to recreate it pretty well. Okay. Thank you very much. Would be very interesting. Thank you. Alex Dietrich reporting live from Silver Spring. Investigators at the scene also say they have found the mark. Train's emergency doors did not work properly. The Mach engineer son says that he's not concerned whether his father was at fault in the train collision. Richard was one of the 11 people killed when his train smashed into an Amtrak passenger train. Chris says he's trying to remember the good times that he had with his father. There's a quote I remember from, Jim Morrison from the door said this one time. He said, basically, I consider myself a sensitive, intelligent human being, but with the soul of a clown. And that's how I picture my dad, because if you talk to any of his other family, he was always like the life of a party. He was always a joker, you know, and that might have gotten him into trouble at times. But, it's very, very, very funny guy, very good sense of humor and very loving or says, even if it turns out the accident is his father's fault, his main concern now is the loss of his father and trying to help his family deal with their loss. There was some concern among local rail commuters this morning, but as our team coverage shows, it was more for the families who lost loved ones in Friday's crash rather than fear for themselves just before getting on a train. Also, no shortage of customers for today's Amtrak runs. Today was another day for trusting the trains and traveling by them. Ending life. Lost the brakes on. While she did have that concern, there apparently wasn't any other. Everyone does that. Accidents happen when someone has no no safety concerns at all. Whatever happens is going to happen is inevitable. Yeah, it is scary. Kind of right, right after a crash. But. Somehow the China felt safe enough for this Amtrak traveler. The fact that he was taking his daughter Abby, along should be proof enough. But I think that the most public means of transportation are safe, and I think there are a lot of safeguards. And if there was an accident, as, we I this past week that, it's a matter of faith and it's out of a person's hands anyway. So, no, I don't have any problems with, traveling by train now or in the future. Although frequent rail writer Janet Lloyd did admit Friday will not be far out of mind today. Now, I'm not too worried about it. I've been happy with the Mark service, but. Well, think about it. We get some bumps along the way. But with that said, she and hundreds of others were on their way on a train today. In other news today, two separate investigations continue this morning following two car accidents overnight. This mild air backs up against the mountains, and we stay somewhat overcast to the point that we'll do news stories about it. I'll do a feature news story the day the sun finally does come back out. We're in for essentially see the sun right here. That's probably the only sun you're going to see this week. That's bad news. Good news is it is going to be mild today. It's going to be the chilliest day out of the next five. And here's the drill. We actually have a pretty strong storm coming our way from the South and from the West. And do understand that there's a pretty good push of some mild air moving our way. We're not concerned about any frozen precip at all. As a matter of fact, the only window of opportunity for some potential winter problems would have been tomorrow morning. Earlier would been forecasting an overnight low right at 32. But my gut feeling this morning was and still is, that you're going to see that temperature boosted into the mid 30s by the time Bob's out here during the 5:00 o'clock news. So understand we got a push a mild air coming our way. But we've also got moisture coming our way with that mild air. As a matter of fact let's take a look at the local radar right now. Our Doppler radar and you can see returns flying right by the area. This is aloft. This moisture is hanging up in the sky. Every once in a while, there could be a spritz there, maybe a flake. But for the most part, all these returns you're seeing. Whereas in color it looks real good and impressive. What we're looking at is moisture aloft, but an indication that layers of the atmosphere are starting to moisten up. And that rain is a certainly a 7,080% chance of rain in the area tomorrow. Now let's go ahead and take a look at tomorrow's map. We'll go ahead and plot that low, that storm right down south of our area. And once again, there's a mild push of air along with it. And understand that we do have other impulses of energy. Other, other, other waves of moisture that we're going to move our way over the next five days.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136410/file/253001#t=834.61,916.78"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136410/file/253001/transcript/71279/annotation/10","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Some, are bringing snow, like any snow around the Great Lakes, getting snow in, and the Wasatch Mountains of, of Utah getting snow up in western Canada. So really, we'll get some rain that's going to get on our nerves by about Friday. We're not talking about flooding rains, but we're talking about occasional rain and drizzle in the area. So we'll get mild air. But we are going to get the, some rain Kelly was talking about. Will wash some of this crud away. It just looks like it's going to be extremely mild. Damp week. It's already overcast. We'll go ahead and say, thickening clouds throughout the remainder of the afternoon. But once again, it certainly is overcast right now. Sally, I can tell you that there are a lot of people shocked here, because things like this just don't happen a lot of times, you may see it every now and then on the Eastern Shore, but in a quaint, quiet community like Easton, this is something that is practically unheard of, not only because of the alleged crimes, a triple homicide, but because of the character of the people involved. It is being called the Death Car. The train involved in Friday's fatal train crash is now being examined in middle River. The car was moved from the crash site in Silver Spring to Middle River last night. State and federal investigators will not say specifically what they're looking for, but there is some evidence that emergency doors and windows failed to work properly. 11 people, including three members of the train crew, died when the train collided with an Amtrak passenger train Friday. The crew tested negative for alcohol. Drug tests are still pending tonight. Part of unraveling just how the accident happened is using something called a slight distance survey, a sight distance survey. Investigators will be doing that at the crash site between now and 6:00.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136410/file/253001#t=1945.63,2036.42"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136410/file/253001/transcript/71279/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Alex Demetric has been in Silver Spring all day, and now begins our team coverage from the scene of the tragedy. Hello, Alex. Hi, Richard. A sight distance survey will use the exact same sort of mark engine that collided last Friday night with an Amtrak passenger plane train, and it will place next to the engineer and investigator who will ride the same rails, the same route the engineer did when they rolled down this stretch of track. If you look down there, you might be able to see the red signal lights. That is the target for this night's test. You'll see some NTSB and CSX people down there as well. What the investigators will measure is how far away they can see that red stop signal. It's a signal system that appears to be working properly, but may still have a very serious flaw. For the first time since last Friday's accident marked trains were making the Brunswick to Washington DC run. If you're ready to, let's go in the same direction Amtrak train was traveling last week when it slammed into an Amtrak passenger train in Silver Spring, killing 11 and injuring dozens. The President's Day holiday brought few riders today, although sitting in an identical car on the same route did bring out feelings. Mean car cars? Convenient. You're near the gate. And that's where those folks were at the job center. I mean, they rode this car here so they could hop right off and get out onto, you know, Metro quickly. And that's the same thing that I do. I mean, I could have been in that location. And you also think about, escape. Places. I mean, you know, how easy is it to get out of the train or not? Safety doors and windows were not working properly on the train. They will also look into neighborhood complaints. A small bridge over the tracks blocks visibility. I think the people in our neighborhood feel very fortunate that this was not a freight train carrying tonnage of toxic waste, that it was in a long freight train that took out this bridge, which is below minimum, safety clearance. It's one foot below and it's right behind an elementary school. So this is what I feel very lucky. And the NTSB will continue to focus on the signal system. Now we're focusing on why or what elements may have impacted upon the operator, the engineer that that made him either forget. I totally disregard that signal. The mark engineer was under a yellow caution signal before he pulled into Kensington Station Friday night. The red signal to stop lay just ahead with the Amtrak train, but instead of proceeding at a yellow limit of 30mph, the Mark train was doing twice that speed, leading to official speculation. A second signal between Kensington and the crash site might be needed to remind engineers of track conditions. NTSB investigators say they worked their way through more than half of the signal system and can find nothing wrong with it. They're, going to be slowed down over the next few days because part of the signal system was destroyed in the accident. It was torn up by that tons of metal that went flying that night. Those pieces have gone off to a lab where they hope to reassemble them, and hopefully those pieces will tell investigators a little bit more. Richard. And they're holding the test right now. Alex. I will say, however, that this theory has not been tested on human beings yet. This is strictly a mice study. However, we all know that a diet high in fat is not the healthiest way to go. That is true, and we have to wait for test studies on Carlos's cheeseburgers specifically, or just to have a turkey burger. All right, it's good. I'm having them for dinner. Good. Join us. So. The snow is melting nicely, Bob. Will we freeze up tonight? No. It looks like we're going to stay above freezing the entire week. So by the end of this week, there won't be much in the way of snow left around the region. Yeah. Not tonight, in fact. Just some cloudy skies. Well, not much in the way of precipitation until maybe later tomorrow. So if you go down tonight, just clouds. Temperatures in the mild side, 35 to 40. We're going to be in the 40s and 50s this week, so. It has been almost a week since three and a half year old Taylor Jones choked to death on a hot dog at a high school basketball game. Today, his family called Eyewitness News. They wanted to thank the many people who tried to save Taylor's life. Although he lived just three and a half years, Taylor Jones made his mark on his friends and large loving family. His. Big part in everyone's lives. A lot of people's lives. A lot of people knew him. The hot dog Taylor choked on was given to him by his grandmother. I noticed he was jumping. Then he came over and touched me on my leg and pointed to his throat, and I just assumed that he was choking off of the hat. A police officer and others rushed to help Taylor. They tried the Heimlich maneuver, but the hot dog would not come out. Taylor died at the hospital. He is eight hot dogs all the time at football games. And I just want everybody to say, I want to say to them, thank them so much. Taylor also leaves behind his five year old sister, Patrice. They were so close and cousins, aunts and uncles, all who dearly loved the child. Everyone tried their best to save Taylor. What if your small child starts choking? If your child is over 1112 months of age and is choking, can't talk, can't breathe. The Heimlich maneuver is the way to go. You find a spot between the bottom of the rib cage and the belly button.
