Marylanders take Earth Day and our environment very seriously, as evidenced by the largest Earth Day cleanup in the country, which took place right here in Maryland today. All across the state, from mountains to the shore, thousands of volunteers raked and planted, painted, recycled and cleaned up. And what's being called the largest peacetime mobilization the state has ever seen. In order less. Mayor Schmoke helped release a hawk at Kerry Murray Park and in his speech gave staff and supporters that much more to celebrate. For both of you who are a little bit nervous from the newspaper report last week. We are not closing the barrier. We have come here today to celebrate the energy in this great park and all that it is doing, and also to push ourselves to reclaim and to recapture both the world region and the world today and to make a difference on our environment. The celebration at Kerry Murray Park was one of a thousand ways Marylanders observed Earth Day all across the state. Volunteers ignoring the steady driving rain to pitch in. This was the kind of day best spent indoors, let alone outside planting trees. But that's just where this hardy group of volunteers from the South Baltimore Youth Center spent their Saturday morning on the banks of the Tapscott River at Fort McHenry. The tree will help make for oxygen for the world, and it'll help the world look nicer and everything. All told, volunteers like Michael Higson and Billy Big, planted ten white ash and 100 Loblolly pine seedlings were temporarily planted until they grow big enough to transplant elsewhere under a steady downpour. Volunteers learned how to break through stubborn ground. How to dig a hole large enough and deep enough to hold a tree's roots. And they learned why a tree is so important to our environment. So we keep the earth moving. People use harsh winter, and it's killing earth and people littering, throwing stuff. And she's telling the birds, You don't see me when I'm not in a little one. So we're saying that here plant trees have more oxygen and also help other people live. But in spite of all their enthusiasm and their willingness to get wet and muddy on a rainy Saturday morning, these volunteers here at Fort McHenry, we're also realists. Maybe one tree will make a difference. Maybe it doesn't. You know, everybody has to do their part, do what they think is important. I'm moving away from Baltimore in a few months, but I I'm sure that we'll come back just to take a look and see how our trees are doing. Police say the juveniles were being loaded onto a bus to go to a recreation outing when they escaped from the Baltimore County Detention Center. Now, one of the escapees was being held on narcotics violations while the other two were being held for auto theft. As Andrea Koppel reports, it's Christmas in April for one Baltimore neighborhood. The month of April is known for a couple of things. Like April showers. Today's weather was proof of that. And April flowers. But Christmas. Well, as of today, thanks to over a thousand volunteers. April will now be a second Christmas for those elderly Baltimore homeowners like Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hall, whose homes need fixing up after we got a little older. It's been hard years because we used to do a lot of stuff. We were never able to do it. We are all retired now. So I was in the steps. For me, the program Christmas in April has been around for eight years in other parts of the country, but it's brand new to Baltimore. The project is a national effort to help keep needy homeowners warm and dry in their own homes. This year, Baltimore volunteers spent the day working on 50 homes in the Asco East neighborhood in West Baltimore. I just paint and rolled and roll and rolled. Yes, it was fun. It was fun and gave orders. You missed the spot. You get this sense of really helping is very fulfilling. And I would tell anyone to do it is very, very nice. And I've been running ragged trying to get them materials. We've had over 20 people in the house and they go through an awful lot of paint and plaster and so forth.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136673/file/253387#t=687.35,791.0"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136673/file/253387/transcript/71540/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Very quickly. Christmas is being given here and so that's what it is they given to us. And that makes good and makes it a perfect Maine Christmas in a way. Andrea Koppel, Channel 13 Eyewitness News. And Andrea says thanks to hundreds of businesses across Baltimore. Christmas in April will save the city half $1 million. A Baltimore area bank is doing its part to aid needy homeowners. Chase Bank of Maryland is helping design a mortgage program for the people's Homesteading groups as a group of low income families who work together to renovate and inhabit houses donated by the city. Chase Bank officials are lending more than financial advice to the group. They went to work today teaching families construction skills as they rebuild the 2800 block of North Avenue. Other Baltimoreans willing to lend a helping hand, put their athletic skills to the test at Fair Lane's bowling Center. It's all to benefit the Chesapeake Foundation for Human Development, a juvenile treatment center which helps disadvantaged kids. Channel Thirteen's own Debbie Wright had a rough time, but a lot of fun at the bowl. The time money raised today will go toward a passenger van and a summer program for the center. Now that the pride of Baltimore, too, is on our way to Europe, another floating ambassador has taken her place at the Inner Harbor. The showers occurring overnight brought us almost a quarter of an inch of rain at the airport. And that's pretty typical of what we saw around the state. Let's go ahead and look at the local radar picture that shows us where the precipitation is occurring right now. And notice that the frontal system now the front has moved off in is by and large, at least the main structure. The front now is pushing off the coast right now. The winds have shifted around to the northwest. The barometer started to rise. If you notice the clouds, the clouds are beginning to lift. So showers that we will see during the evening hours will be generally of the lighter and progressively more scattered variety.
