We'll have live team coverage. I am Sally Thornton. This is Eyewitness News at five. I'm Bob Turk. It looks like it's pretty much out of here. We've got some light freezing drizzle for the remainder of time. We say, great job you're in over here. I'll have today's Tonya Harding update and some very serious news. Now the Daytona motor Speedway. And here's a look at what else is coming your way next on Eyewitness News at five. Baltimore reaches out to help during the weather crisis. Dramatic scenes out of Chicago as firefighters rescue 30 people from a burning apartment building. And will bad weather make roses a precious commodity for Valentine's? Another day, another storm. Again tonight. The weather is a major story. Good evening everybody. Bob's here to begin our team coverage. Well, this morning, snow and a lot of sleet not being covered. As you can see, the roads don't look that great. Now this. We should have plenty of leftover snow on the roads and sleet. And now, with this very light coating of light freezing drizzle. Not going to make things too beautiful for the evening hours. As you can clearly see. So a lot of the roads look like this had to be cleared out of here. Let's take a look at the local radar. As you can see, the bulk of the precipitation is well off to our east and south right now, and it continues to be a lot of freezing rain down across central and southern portions of our eastern shore, Lewis and Shore, Delaware. But in the Baltimore area, it's pretty much moved out here. The heavy stuff. We've had some snow reports just north of the Pennsylvania Maryland border, up to ten 12in over portions of York County, and for the north and east sections around Baltimore, generally from 3 to 7in of snow and sleet mixture right now for the remainder of the night into tomorrow, probably will see some light freezing drizzle. And that's about what we expect out of this system. It's now moving east and northeast. Speaking of snow up the New York area, you can see it right there to stick a jump New York City area anywhere from 10 to 15in of snow. They already had 8 to 12in just two days ago. Not a lot of traffic right now because of the road conditions. Thank goodness for the time being. At least the ice has stopped now. Give me an idea of the road conditions, how long it took it. They took me about an hour and a half. It was slow going, but it was. It wasn't complicated, you know, it was fairly well plowed. What makes this situation especially difficult is that we haven't had time to recover from the six inches of snow we got this morning. Alex Dimitri continues our team coverage with that messy story. Those out first had the toughest time on foot, and it didn't take a paper on the doorstep to figure out why. The footing is like, it's like a third to one foot to the next. And real lucky when you fall you just stay down. But getting around behind the wheel was easier, at least before dawn. That's when the new snowfall gave drivers something to grip other than old ice. But the snow is over the top of the ice and it's, you know, it's helping a lot. We still have to be very careful because you never know where ice is. The. But as the day froze on, the room for error shrank. Not even snowplows were immune as ice began taking hold again. It's the ice underneath the snow. You don't have any traction cause you got chains or something. Yeah. As ice began creeping back onto the surface of side streets, cars began creeping, if they were lucky. Unfreezing roads continues to take a heavy toll on diminishing salt supplies. Baltimore City still has some. The state is running out. And fighting to keep up with the storm takes its human toll. Road crews, who have already put in long hours this week, started working this morning at 2 a.m. and they're still out to see how they're managing. Now let's check in with the State Highways Administration. Deb Stone continues our team coverage live from their emergency center death. Well, Sally, this is the emergency operations center for the State Highway Administration, another place where they've been working pretty much around the clock, just like those workers out on the street. This is where they're keeping track of all of the plowing and salting operations that are going on all around the state, and those operations appear to be going pretty well, in spite of all of the bad forecasts and also the critical shortage of salt, which we've been hearing an awful lot about lately. With me right now is Liz Kalinowski, the State Highway Administration analyst. I've been out all day and the roads don't seem too bad. Well, I think you're right, Deb. However, we do want to caution folks, there is still some snow cover out there, some icing in spots, and really continue to cooperate with us. And I think that's one reason why things have been looking as good as they are, because our crews have been able to do their job, because motors have been listening to our warnings and they've been staying home. Although one of the problems is that motorists aren't heeding the warnings of the snow emergency route signs. The folks who have been going out seem to be parking on snow emergency routes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136341/file/252926#t=377.18,461.99"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136341/file/252926/transcript/71253/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We want to get the message out. This is primarily a Maryland state route, for example, Liberty Road, York Road outside the city, in the counties, people seem to park there and then walk to wherever their destination may be. And we want to discourage folks from doing that. The plow operators can't do their jobs, and you may end up being assessed to find or end up having your car towed. Yes, which is not too much fun in this kind of weather. What is the condition with the salt right now? I know that you've been very, very short. You've been mixing it with other things to try to make it stretch and last longer. Right. And I think that strategy has worked well. The tireless efforts of our crews every night and plowing and pushing the material off the roadway, using that mix of abrasives and salt has seemed to work quite well so far. However, we are still cautioning everyone. We still are critically low. Therefore we can't continue to provide that really high level of service. If we had as much salt as we'd like to. We're getting some deliveries in tomorrow. We're still working on some more for next week, so we appreciate your corporate cooperation. We're doing everything we can doing the best you can. Thank you very much. Liz Kalinowski, the state highway administration, that's the word. From here, they're continuing to work and keep an eye on the storm and hopefully stay a little bit ahead of it. We had a series of accidents, spin outs, disabled vehicles as well, right near the Baltimore Harford County line. At one time today that was very icy. So watch your delays as you make your way northbound and southbound as well, because we Mountain Road and the Baltimore Beltway, as I said, the Beltway itself really not in too bad a shape. We have been open since about 8:00 this morning. Both of our runways have been operational. We've been getting some flights off the ground as well as we've had some incoming service. And that in turn, is sending a ripple effect through the system. So it's it's causing a lot of different things at different places and different times. So as we're speaking, there are a lot of people, with the airline companies who are reassessing right this moment. Yes. That's correct. Airlines are not only reassessing, which aircraft to move in to reposition for the morning so they can attempt to begin fresh and start bright and early tomorrow morning. There are probably more media people in Little Hammer today than there are residents of Little Hammer. That's what it is. Yeah. We're, complaining, loudly about the weather back here. How what you got over there in Norway, John? It's actually not that bad. There are about four feet of snow on the ground right now, but not bad. While most people are slipping and sliding and complaining and whining today, some people are actually having fun. Yeah, we found a couple who are definitely making the most of this rotten weather in today's neighborhood news. Darren and Kiel Quinn looked out of their window this morning and they made themselves a decision. What they decided was they weren't going to let this gloomy, snowy, icy, gross, depressing, yucky day get them down. Time to break out the cross-country skis, boys and girls, and head for Wyman Park. Darren and Kiel used to live in Maine and they got hooked on this cross-country thing while they lived up there. They say that since they moved down here to Baltimore, they get an average of about one full day of skiing in per year here in town. Of course, the last two winters have done wonders to boost that average up, which may be a source of consternation to most of us. But for Darren and Kyle, this rotten weather provides an opportunity to get out there and recreate. Baby. It's good. Yes, we got the snow. We got sleet. Temperature wise right now. Well, first, let's talk a couple little lines I've drawn on the map. South of this line, it's all rain. A little bit of freezing rain along the line, but mainly rain in between. We're left with some freezing drizzle. Light freezing drizzle, the snow line just to our north right now. And it's retreating, moving out to the east and to the northeast as the evening progresses. Just a little bit of snow up there and rain now moving off. We do have some pretty good freezing rain still showing up on the eastern shore. Temperatures around the region below freezing just about everywhere except from east of Salisbury, along the shore there, and extreme southern portions of Virginia southeast of the Richmond area. So, the folks on the Eastern Shore are getting, pretty good dose of freezing rain at this moment. Take a look at this. Look at our radar. We look at our local radar. Next. Yes. Thank you very much. You can see over to the east of our region. West of the bay, you can see not a whole lot happening, but on the eastern shore, that's where moderate precipitation is occurring right now and continue to move out to the east northeast.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136341/file/252926#t=1746.56,1845.42"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136341/file/252926/transcript/71253/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So you folks in Salisbury and actually from Dover South and from Cambridge south and east, still experiencing some freezing rain and some sleet that will eventually wind down as the night progresses. But west of the bay, nothing really showing the radar. The drizzle is too light to detect by the radars. 2918 today, Norm is 4225. Northeast winds at 10 to 15. Tomorrow we will see some improvement in temperature. May go up just to freezing tomorrow, which will help maybe a degree or two over that. You can see the precipitation heavy stuff to our south and southeast with warmer air to our north there. Really heavy snow band was from about, central Pennsylvania up toward the New York City area, where New York City really was just some that the bullet of the heaviest snow, 14in of snow in the New York metropolitan area, northern new Jersey, some areas have 25in of snow on the ground. They just got 12 to 15in the other day two days ago. So they have a real mess up there. Two areas of low pressure. However, this one during the day to day, actually brought enough warm air in to overhead to change our snow to sleet and on some light freezing rain. But now it's all moving out of here. Eventually we will see some clearing. Now this area of low pressure it's not going to really bothers too much, but it will continue. Cloud cover, and maybe a couple of rain showers on Sunday and Saturday night perhaps. And temperatures are going to be critical at that time. So there could be a little bit of freezing, rain, just a little bit of it. A lot of the spin outs, whether occurring around the Beltway, are all because of driver error for the most part. Otherwise just slick conditions and a lot of deep snow accident activity. All five major auto parts stores Rosedale, Arbutus, Aberdeen, Elkton and Bel Air. We know this bad weather is tough on driving, but did you know it's also tough on your engine? Dave Serio says you auto know your oil may need changing more often than you think. The most important form of maintenance to be performed on your car on a regular basis is a simple oil change that consists of changing the oil, changing the oil filter, and also on some automobiles, lubricating the chassis. There are two important reasons to have your oil changed. One of them is engine lubrication. The more oil changes you have performed on your car, the better engine lubrication and the longer your engine will last. And also safety checks. It gives a chance for you or your mechanic, depending on who performs your oil change, to open up the hood and check under there for safety items that may be causing problems. Now frequency of oil changes is something that is debated throughout the industry. Most of your automobile manufacturers owner's guides will state every six months or every 7500 miles, whichever occurs first. And you may have already heard that there are national advertising oil change companies that advertise every three months or every 3000 miles. Driving remains very iffy, even treacherous and dangerous in some locations. We're live in southwest Baltimore at Washington Boulevard Boulevard, and Patapsco Avenue. If you can take a look up the street here, photographer Joel Eagle is going to take a shot of the cars coming down the hill. Traffic? There's very little traffic right now. Less and less as the afternoon is droned on. When we got here this afternoon, there was quite a bit of traffic, a lot of people getting off of work early, trying to get home before the conditions worsened. Many people got off of work 3 or 4:00, and it was very difficult dealing with the ice this afternoon, trying to drive on the ice. We were here earlier when a big rig, an 18 Wheeler, got stuck as he tried to navigate the hill on Cayton Avenue. The rig of the driver tried to do just about everything he could, to get out of his predicament, by the way, he eventually did, but his wheels were spinning. That happened to a lot of people at this location. Driving once again tonight, even on the main arteries. So one thing very important. Now, it may look like it's just snow on the roadway. Yes, except for you folks in the Eastern Shore, where it's still some pretty moderate freezing rain on the Eastern Shore and some sleet down there west of the bay. The precipitation, for all intents and purposes, is pretty much out of here. We have freezing drizzle, some light freezing drizzle around the area that will continue tonight, probably even into tomorrow with cloudy skies and temperatures below freezing. So if you're walking, you're driving, do be careful, because light freezing drizzle means that there is a slight glare of ice forming on surfaces. Denise. Thank you Bob.
