There's something a little bit different going on at the Baltimore Penitentiary today. It's a break in the grim prison routine. You might call it a day to relax and boogie with all. Up here now. Have a seat so we can get population up here. It's something different for the performers who are inmates themselves from penitentiaries all over the state. And it's something different for free spirit, A red hot jazz rock band from the Baltimore Penn. It's the Maryland penitentiary talent show, a day packed full of comedy, skits and good music, a chance for the inmates to show off their hard earned skills and perform to an eager audience. You know, it's going to give us a lot of motivation, a lot of drive, and it's going to make us want to go, oh, you know, oh, it's like the accumulation of all you worked for, you know, finally getting some type of recognition. We don't get that much recognition and give the man some incentive as far as dealing with something that you might be able to deal with when you get back in the community. And I see that my free spirit is a talented group of nine musicians. Some of the members were accomplished musicians when they came here. Others started from scratch. The band has been together for about three years and today's show is the largest audience they've ever had. This town has to admit a lot. You know, it's really gave the guys inspiration. It gave them an incentive, I would say, because they could see something coming. Glen Granger, the band's leader, has a bachelor's degree in music and plays a mean trumpet. And we go we attend music class twice a week in a school. So everybody in this group reads and writes, composed music. So we just have a reservoir of ideas and talent that we can work with. We go down to somebody, get on a piano. They try and pick up the guitar. Musically, we like to do a variety of things rock, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues and old country and western, easy listening and everything, just music. So we look at free spirit as being like more than just a band, more like a concept. Oh, no. It isn't an easy life in jail. A lot of the music reflects the blues. This song was dedicated to a prisoner who recently lost his life in the pen. You got to let me talk to you for a little while now. Why not? It seems like a lot of us just can't get our heads together. What if we. Really get 12. So you will find a job just around the corner, right? You've got to be strong to keep it up and you got to be strong. Takes away all. If you come down to Berlin, the stuff works. And so you like something that might have happened yesterday. You might have went to the hospital and the people around, they might have said, Come back tomorrow. You might have been sick. When we come down to a room, play some music. That's what I did. And I think a lot of guys I don't think people thought people would. I search for people. All of us got a service like this.
