Richard is off tonight, and right now, Easter 1978 is just about over, and it will be remembered as an Easter that was celebrated in spite of a lot of things. In spite of the serious bout with the flu, Pope Paul VI celebrated the traditional Easter mass from St. Peter's Square. A quarter of a million people braved inclement weather in Rome to come and listen to the pontiff, call on the Christian world to have strong faith, and bless them in ten different languages. A special roof was built to protect the 80-year-old head of the Catholic Church from a steady drizzle. In New York, the drizzle was also prevalent, but there was no special roof over Manhattan's Easter parade today. It too came off in spite of the rain, and thousands of people came out to watch a waterlogged parade from under umbrellas and raincoats along Fifth Avenue. A special sunrise service at Fort Ritchie was supposed to have some special guests, President and Mrs. Carter. But the first family decided not to attend, opting instead for a private Easter observance at Camp David. The Fort Ritchie service went on in spite of the Carter's absence. Despite our own bad weather, hundreds of people worshiped the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary this day. Lawrence Cardinal Sheehan celebrated Easter here. Sheeham said the day Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead over 2,000 years ago is the most holy day of the year for Christians everywhere, even more so than Christmas. The Cardinal, drawing inspiration from the Holy Scriptures, talked about the happiness of man because of God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, and Easter.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149154/file/273773#t=79.31,166.56
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149154/file/273773/transcript/80270/annotation/4
Speaker 3: The happiest of the Church's feasts, and rightly so, because it is the feast that is dedicated in a very special way to hope, and hope is the key to happiness.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149154/file/273773#t=167.57,185.13
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149154/file/273773/transcript/80270/annotation/5
Speaker 1: I hope there is no happiness. He puts Smith in, but it's 11-8 here. As you saw, Clint Hurdle there at the bat. And he smacks it out, describing the final nail in the coffin of the birds this afternoon down in Fort Myers, Florida. Now to the men, and championships are traditionally won by experienced older teams, Duke, however, a collection of underclassmen like Jim Spinarkel feeding freshman Mike Juminski the other day, who scored 29 against Notre Dame. Then there's freshman Jean Tinkerbell Banks, providing the explosive scoring power and rebounding strength that gets the Blue Devils into their specialty, the running game. Kentucky, meanwhile, a team out of the traditional mold, experienced and disciplined, shining through, as Rick Roby scores against Arkansas. The Cats front line is strong too, good and strong. Jack Givens, perhaps the strongest of them all, is scoring and rebounding power here, become even more important against the Duke team that likes running. It's the seventh trip for Kentucky to the national finals coming up tomorrow night, and it'll be the first time for Duke if they can get down there and win the thing. In pro ball the uh... He was busy working up a sweat trying to fold today. He was successful. His ultimate disaster was number 15 hitting behind a tree. Ended with a six at 16. He drove off the fairway. Another bogey. And as I look at the weather facts before me tonight, I think we're going to renew in fine shape. It was kind of a lousy weekend. Tomorrow shouldn't be too much better. We're looking for some really nice weather Tuesday, Wednesday, maybe Thursday. Right now it is three degrees warmer than we last saw you at six o'clock from 47 degrees up to 50 degrees. That's 10 degrees Celsius. Humidity is awful high. Hadn't changed those since 689 percent. Winds from the east at uh... Three miles an hour barometric pressure twenty nine ninety and holding steady instant i was out today looking at some of the damage done throughout the weekend in the maryland area normally small streams that never go out of their banks well they're just uh... Making like oceans tonight and uh... Streets are doing the same thing a lot of low-lying streets that excuse me throughout the area have uh... Well we put it to you this way flooded and don't go through these flooded streets through any gullies because water just will not move in your rec transmission or your brakes in your car. Here's what's going on. The satellite tonight is going to show us this incredible storm that has slowly moved from the Midwest all the way over to the East Coast and here it sits tonight. Hopefully by some time tomorrow it will move on out into the ocean and make way for some clear skies. But as you can see by these clouds though they're start they're moving very erratically. They're going one way then they're going another way. What this is is just a really bad spring storm of very turbulent weather, some up rare conditions that aren't conducive to flying or living on the ground. The map tonight looks complicated. It's not really. A low pressure system now off the South Carolina coast is giving us all the problems. It's got some associated fronts, a couple of little low pressure systems. Basically, these associated low pressure are kind of regional developments. But what this all adds up to is a lot of rain. But there's one good point to this a warm front going almost straight north up into Canada. It's starting to come through our area right now. And like I said, it's raised our temperature from six o'clock. We had 47 now we're up to 50. But tomorrow morning we're expecting 55 degrees. So as soon as this whole mess moves out of the way, we'll be in for some warmer weather and hopefully, hopefully by the tomorrow night at the absolute latest, we will start coming under the influence of this high pressure system right here now off the Louisiana coast. What he's going to do is kind of move in a slight northeast direction, give us some of its influence, and there's another high pressure system we really need to look at. It's sitting out here, sitting way out here. Almost the whole length of the country away. But it's a real deep, massive storm. I shouldn't say storm. It's a good weather system. It's expected to move straight down into our area, block out that low and a cold front up in Canada, and we should be in there for the rest of the week. Luckily, the weekend is over. Statewide right now. All the flood warnings we told you about on the six o'clock newscast have been canceled it looks like the heavy rains we were expecting aren't going to come they might come to certain areas just for a short amount of time with the flood warnings are gone and that's good news way out in the west temperatures are really up nice forty three degrees in oakland forty three in cumberland forty seven right now in hagerstown fifty three degrees and frederick salisbury's gone up ten degrees in six o clock from forty seven to fifty seven degrees Mount Washington right now. 50 degrees and rain on the bay tomorrow winds from the uh coming off the ocean 10 to 15 knots wave chops two to four feet the forecast looks something like this rain heavy tonight at times in certain areas lows 44 to 50 degrees tomorrow occasional rain i hope it goes away highs of 58 degrees tomorrow night the rain will be ending late but the cloud is going to move away and so is the heat down to 37 degrees There are your tides We pulled through another one, Don. Oh, come on, Tuesday. Could be a lot worse, hey, really.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149154/file/273773#t=1334.19,1560.41
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149154/file/273773/transcript/80270/annotation/40
Speaker 13: It's getting better Tuesday, right?
