Let's get ready to rumble. Here. It's winter weather in Maryland Huns. Yeah, it's deja vu all over again, as somebody famous once said. Well, I want to tell you, isn't it it has certainly been a very interesting day here in Maryland this Friday, the 11th day of February of 1994. The day started out real early and the news story itself continues. Yeah, we don't let it go quite yet. No, it started last night, but it did. It's major stuff this morning and we want to hold on to it for just a little while longer. We are here in the Newsroom at a very peculiar time for us. They are busily preparing the 5:00 news, the 6:00 news, and, of course, already working on the 11:00 news. So they pretty much told the morning team, why don't you guys just stay around and and go to bat for us? That only ladies and gentlemen writes our editorials on a daily basis these days. Finds himself writing more closings than anything else. Yeah, that's. That's what the editorial board said. Then we switched to what? We switched to sleep for a while and then we actually got into a period of calm weather wise. And then we started in with freezing rain sheets of freezing rain here on TV and throughout the area. And now we're dealing, as I look out the window with sleet and freezing rain. And I just want to point something out to you. There is no script sitting in front of Mr. Scott in front of me. There is essentially a blank pad. Reason being, this show is going to evolve very much like this. Stay in the current situation. As it happens, we're dealing with and as it happens, pretty much situation. We may be off about ten after four. No, we will quite as it's happening right now. We sent our man, Ron Matz out onto the streets and I got news for you. It has been a just a very, very rough period here for the past three hours. Let's go ahead to go to Ron Match. Ron, what is currently right now happening out there? Well, Don and Marty are right now, this is ice. It's nothing but ice coming down. And we are in the middle of an ice storm in. And at this hour, we are live in southwest Baltimore at the top School Avenue and Washington billboard. And I can tell you from watching the traffic out here for the last hour or so, it's not good driving, to say the least. We've seen a couple of 18 wheelers get stuck in this area trying to make turns, especially as they're going up this hill where it branches off to Clayton Avenue. So it's certainly not a good situation.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136338/file/252922#t=198.4,280.42"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136338/file/252922/transcript/71103/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Listen, as the driving out there, how's the driving? I think that's a pretty good idea of what you need out here, Don and Marty. Four wheel drive is the name of the game. If you don't have it, you're going to run into problems and the ice just keeps pelting down and it's just solid ice right now. That's what we're getting, at least here in southwest Baltimore. Back to you. Well, you know, picture says a thousand words when I look at it, it's like 2 or 3 minutes after 4:00. Look at the area you are in right now. And the and the and the little activity around you at this time on a normal Friday. My gosh almighty. But people are pretty much I think early on this, they called it quits and have just hung inside. We've talked to a lot of people. The people who are in the roads right now left work early. They saw the situation worsening. They weren't going to hang around because, as you've been mentioning all day in the weather forecast, Marty, has just gotten worse and worse. The situation as far as the storm is concerned and before we were getting some snow, we're getting some sleep now. This is all turn to ice. Yeah. When you say it's ice coming down, is it the kind that coats the car the minute it stops and coats the antennas and everything else? There's a lot of that coming down, Don. Been watching these waves of moisture moving into the area, freezing rain, sleet actually in some locations in a matter of 15 minutes, you've gone from freezing rain to sleet to freezing rain to sleet in the area. Right now, we're still seeing moisture, albeit down to the south. We'll let this loop through one more time. And notice the big slug of moisture down to our south. Once you look off to the southwest, though, you can see there is more moisture on a line to head into the metro area. Go ahead, dissolve this into the big radar picture. Let's get a big, broad overview of the East Coast of the United States on down to the south. Here's what we still have. Our problem is lingering low pressure situated right over east Tennessee is going to drive all this moisture up to and through the area. So if you want to look at your evening's weather now, look down here to the southwest portion of the Old Dominion, Virginia. We still have a few more hours in this weather event and it's not going to get better for quite a while. Let's go ahead throw it back to you, Don. Okay. Thank you. View the situation throughout the state and I don't hear and well, you know, maintain a limited staff here for a while and we'll have people on the pagers all night, so, well, I didn't. I didn't mean. I didn't mean shut down, but, I mean, in other words, you all had a situation under control enough to kind of maybe ease back on the mental image of it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136338/file/252922#t=1174.7,1265.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136338/file/252922/transcript/71103/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Well, it looked like, you know, from the reports we're getting from the National Weather Service and, what have you, that, you know, the major part of the front is passed through the area. And yesterday, when we're talking to the representative National Weather Service, they were predicting we would get up to a foot to two foot of snow in some areas, and. Fortune We haven't gotten that, thank goodness. Yeah. Fortunately, the vast bulk of the storms over. I mean, we're we're the light at the end of the tunnel is out there. We still have some more sleet and freezing rain to get through. But I imagine as far as you all are concerned, the bulk of the problems have already fallen, as it were. Well, we've still got some other situations where the utilities throughout the state, we've got about 25,000 people throughout the state from various utilities that don't have power or some people haven't had power for like 3 or 4 days. And the utilities are working as fast as they can to restore that power to people. And I'm sure when you talk to those people that don't have power, they'll say that, you know, the the emergency situation is certainly not over for them. But, the utilities are working as hard as they can. The governor has signed a proclamation approving the, authorization for the utilities to work beyond 15 hours so they can restore those, utilities to the, people throughout the state as rapidly as possible. I know when you have your situation room going, you have Jeannie there. Is there any way that you can assist Jeannie at this point and let's say Delmarva Power and Chop Tank, Electric and all that? And as soon as they get the power lines repaired in one place that, you know, we've got a tree that falls another and breaks another power line, cause we have freezing rain tonight, more of it. And there could be more of that coming down, too. That's correct. So I'll tell you, we we could have more problems tomorrow in this regard. No question about it. So emergency management will be open tomorrow. Again, we'll be on standby and we'll be open to as necessary. And then if we need to, to bring all the people in from the State Department, it's an agency. We'll do that. We'll do whatever necessary to provide the support that's needed, you know, for the cities in the local jurisdictions throughout the state. But at this point, you're just pretty well satisfied that. That the current situation is well under control. We think so. And, yeah, but we got a lot of people still working the state highways got, you know, several hundred people out, working to clearing the roads. Course the state police is out, you know, doing an investigation on the accident. I tell you. Let's talk about the next few hours. What can we expect here? A slow tapering or we just got a lot of hassle on that, a blunt end? Well, we do. We are going to have a tapering, and it's almost a combination of both things. We are just near the end of the heaviest precipitation, the latest Doppler radar showing an end to the the heavy, freezing rain and sleet more or less over the area as we head through the next two hours or so. And then as we head through the evening hours and overnight, we're just going to have spotty freezing drizzle. So within the next three hours, we're going to have. Vast improvement with the freezing rain, sleet more or less coming to an end and just having to deal with freezing drizzle and things like that. So it is looking up within the next few hours. And we have sort of a narrow focus here. Of course, we look into southern Pennsylvania, we look down into Northern Virginia and Delaware and things. But where else along the East Coast are people getting hammered? And is anybody getting hammered worse today? Well, as a matter of fact, this is the worst snowstorm for Newark, New Jersey, since 1983. And they've gotten so far 17in of snow. Wow. That's not that far from New York City. No, not at all. New York City as anywhere from seven to a foot of snow. Okay. How about north of there? North of there. There's some heavy snow going on right now through Massachusetts, Connecticut and even Cape Cape Cod. Snowfall amounts anywhere from 4 to 8in right now with more expected through the nighttime hours. Go ahead. We've gotten above freezing across southern portions of North Carolina and South Carolina, where they had some heavy, freezing rain earlier this morning. So once you get to about Raleigh, Durham and that area near Hatteras and things like that, the roads are vastly improved and and temperatures are above freezing and there's not too many problems from ice anymore. What is that phone number? People can call and actually get an update from a live person. It's 410539 5000. And you might have to try once or twice to get through. It's a pretty popular number, but until you get to listen to some sexy voice mail there for a while that the MTA has got a person there ready to take care of you because we I mean, we do recognize that a lot of people rely on you. And let me tell you something, sometimes you all get a bad rap. But you know what? You're there. Thank you. And the system does work. We try to be I mean, we've we've had crews working, you know, three days straight here. So I listen to you say that we're 80% through and 20% left. And this 18 Wheeler really had a difficult time. It was stuck for quite some time trying to get some traction. And this is the kind of conditions that we're facing all over the Baltimore area this afternoon. You really need four wheel drive to get around, especially on the hills. You can take a look at this big rig, really having a difficult time trying to get up this hill at Cayton Avenue. I want to bring in a gentleman right now who's been on the road all day, and he's with me now live in southwest Baltimore. What's your name? Joe Rafferty. Joe, where do you work? We're going to roll in doors in Maryland, right down the street here. You've been out on the highway all day and all day. Yeah, it's pretty nasty at all. If I was you, I'd stay in, you know, have a good time, watch movies along with, you know, we're going to watch Don and Marty. Yeah. Yeah, you do that. Let's say if you're out driving, slow down and don't tailgate. We've seen a lot of idiots out on the road this afternoon. Hi, Ron. You got it. Thank you. Outspoken. Okay. The storm has been moving from the south northward and we're going to jump up northward right now to the Maryland House Rest Stop restaurant. Whatever you want for today. Come in. Are you there?
