While Manson's live in the eyewitness news room with a story you will only see right here on Eyewitness News. Hi, Ron. Hi. Hi. Karen Garland started working at Bay Island Crab House on Liberty Road, just above Northern Parkway only two weeks ago. Just after noontime today, her life turned into eight minutes of terror. Just emotionally, you know, I'm still shook up because I could have been shot. Could have been killed. County police say the holdup man got here shortly after Cameron opened for business. She stayed in this freezer terrified and didn't move for eight minutes. When Karen's boss arrived, he found Karen on ice and called police. The gunman was gone. I yelled for Karen and I thought maybe she was in the bathroom and I was meant for I. I came back here and she. She was crying in the box. I found her in there. During her eight minutes of terror, Karen told me she was thinking about her kids. That I have four children and I don't want to die. That's it. That was basically it. Just take whatever you wanted and get the hell out. The robber didn't see most of the cash. This afternoon, county police were dusting for fingerprints. While neighbors like Alice Kaufman reacted angrily to what happened across the street. What's your reaction to something like that? Well, my reaction. Yeah. Catch him. Shoot him. Thankfully, no shots were fired here today. And Karen Garland vows not to be intimidated. I'm not going to leave here because of it. We appreciate that romance reporting live from the Newsroom. Okay. Students who survive the unspeakable terror of a deadly school shooting bravely face the future today. It has been just four months since Eyewitness News showed you that horrible April afternoon when two teenagers carried out the worst school shooting in American history. But there was no looking back today as 2000 teenagers returned to Columbine High School. There were no traces of the massacre, only swarms of teachers and parents determined to help students overcome their memories. Deborah Stone begins our team coverage live with the latest on a very difficult day Deborah. Well, it was a poignant day for the 2000 students of Columbine High School. They returned there for the first time since the April shooting rampage that left our entire country in shock. A sunny day filled with hopes for the future greeted students and faculty this morning, calling it a day to take back their school. The 2000 students of Columbine High School returned to class here for the first time since last April's deadly rampage. Protected by a human wall of parents and friends, they marched back to the campus. We have prevailed. We have overcome. Each of us is the spirit of Columbine. Welcome home, rebels. At a rally this morning, the Columbine family gathered to draw strength from each other and to lay the groundwork for their future. As we embark on this new school year, people are emotionally in different places. It is vital that we respect what people are feeling. Returning students will, of course, find no physical evidence of that horrible day in April. Okay. An important day. Thank you, Deborah. The start of school is still a couple of weeks off for most kids right here in Maryland. But teachers, administrators and police have had school security on their minds all summer. Alex Maitra continues our team coverage with the word that safety will be a big part of back to school this year for teachers returning to school this week for orientation. Violence and security are among the topics of discussion. I think security and safety is very important in the school as a educators perspective and as a parents perspective. You know, parents do send their children to school thinking that they're going to be safe. So it's much safety that we can enforce in the schools, the better. And it's something kids think about it a little. With my little you never know what's going to happen. I still think about it, but I don't think it's a big problem. It's going to be a big problem here. Patsy Holmes coordinates student and staff security for Baltimore County schools, which have been working on safety issues for the past two years. As Eyewitness News for this morning, weather has been showing you the drought disaster continues to take its toll on our state. But now one group of business owners is wondering just how fair the water restrictions really are. Eyewitness News is live aboard Sky chopper 13 when Mike Shoe tees off with the story. Mike, I guess Tiger Woods is happy that water was not a problem at the PGA Championship this weekend. I don't know if he did so well. So the courses around here, right guard here near Joppa, down at 800ft and over the Mount Vista Golf course near I-95. We were flying around today and we saw a number of brown courses, including this one, courses with out watered fairways. When you look below, you see that the greens are fine, but the fairways are brown. Now originally courses couldn't water, Now they can, but the damage is still being done here at Forest Park in Baltimore. Ted Weintraub had better days. I smoke and the course isn't helping much either. Or they think that in time, Mother Nature will have a torrent. We'll have rain, the grass grow and everybody will be happy. But as far as them watering, if the restriction is I can't water at home, they can't water here. Actually, they can water. But not as much with all the hot spots. Mostly this last past Wednesday. Now, when he's out here watering, he's specifically hitting spots with the hose. The superintendent casts a concerned eye on his precious greens.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136504/file/253090#t=695.12,795.5"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136504/file/253090/transcript/71212/annotation/9","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Okay. This is a pro with the guys the watering crew do when they go around. They check the green with this probe. And what we're looking at is the sample that the guy pulls out of the ground and then he feels it with his fingers to see how moist it is. And if it's drying out anything, he'll know that he needs to put some water on to it. But travel with him a few yards down range and it's a much different story. This is burnt of grass from the drought and low humidity that is so good. The grass and it hurts when you put up against some of these restrictions like they were and you got to watch your grass dies. It's like watching one of your kids get sick and it makes you feel bad. He's reduced his watering by 75 to 80%. So now in some spots, there's not much difference between the asphalt and the grass. If we didn't have any water restrictions and things look this bad, I wouldn't have a job. That brings us back to this. For some. What a hard conditions have put at least five strokes plus on my game by the ball rolling so. Sure. Blame it, right? Yeah. I have three. I have no choice. The greens look perfect, but it is brown out on the fairways. You know, one of the reasons why is the folks at Forest Park were telling me that normally they spend 22 minutes each sprinkler head gets to water the fairway. Now, because of the water restrictions, they've cut that down to just four minutes and they're only doing it at night. And as you saw, they're watering the greens by hand and not with automated sprinkler machinery. Back to you. Good. Hey, Mike, when's the last time you've been out on the course? Today. Very good. I wasn't playing that. That's what I wanted to know. Okay, Mike, thanks a lot. Mike, you're reporting live from Sky Chopper 13. So when we all be getting back on the ball weather wise, Bob Turk is live at the WGC Outback to tell us whether we're any closer to our water goal. Bob. Well, we've got some pretty good thunderstorms over the weekend. A lot of damage in some areas and a lot of rain over two inches, some areas less than a half an inch. It did help to fill some of the reservoirs just a little bit, but it did nothing to bring this event to normal for this month of August. Take a look at the numbers. This is at BWI. I know you got more at your house. So far this month, only 1.03in the big storm Saturday at the airport, about 90 507 inch normal of this date in August. We have 1.8 nights that we're still left with that deficit of 0.86in. So we're still almost at each below normal for the month of August. We still need a lot more rain. The drought is leaving a salty taste in the mouths of some Perryville residents, which could cause some health problems because Baltimore City Water is what more city, rather, is taking water from the Susquehanna River. That means more bay water moves into the area, raising the salt level. A recent test shows the level to be almost three times the normal amount. If you're on a low sodium diet and rely on the Susquehanna for drinking water, you may want to consider drinking bottled water and contacting your doctor. What was once a private yet highly talked about relationship has now gone very public. It was the moment the British press, if few others, have been waiting months to see. And the Greeks got it first. Prince Charles. And his longtime companion, Camilla Parker Bowles, ended their summer holiday together in public. The couple, along with the prince's sons, William and Harry, had spent the last ten days aboard a luxury yacht owned by a Greek tycoon. A veritable army of paparazzi have been unable to track them down. The public display was seen by royal watchers as another step in the process of formalizing the couple's relationship. It was in sharp contrast to the start of the holiday when Charles and Camilla arrived on different days. The timing seems to be about right. Yeah, I mean, I think they should just get on with their life and there's nobody else concerned. Can I say who has been the next queen of England? But that's fine. And just to add spice to it all, the public display of togetherness came a day after reports the Prince Charles had been threatened by harpoon wielding protesters. That incident occurred while the prince was swimming away from the luxury yacht near Cyprus. Royal bodyguard intervened when the prince set off a security alarm. He always carries the incident, provided the British tabloid press, which is obsessed with the royals, with lurid headlines. But a spokesman for the royal family played down the dangers, as were the couple in question. They seem to have had a good holiday. Interesting. Kind of switching gears back on the water. Last year, you made me make a promise that I would not allow anyone or anything to take our school. Why? Well, today I am fulfilling that promise. With parents forming a human shield to protect the students. There were many emotional reunions and smiling faces. The shooting itself or the victims were never mentioned. And for that reason, not everyone was celebrating. To me, it just was rah rah, let's forget about the kids that died. And, you know, who cares? It's all move on now. Let's forget what happened and move forward. And I think that's wrong. I think it should be just the way it was just, you know, nice, quiet, saying hi to everybody. Well, they certainly did. Thank you, Kelly. Well, no place is truly safe from a nightmare like the one at Columbine High School. Nothing on the scale of Columbine, but violence does happen. One of our students got stabbed. The victim was shot by another male. It's just something I don't want to deal with. I'm getting tired of it. For teachers returning to school this week for orientation, Violence and security are among the topics of discussion. I think security and safety is very important in the school as a educators perspective and as a parent's perspective. You know, parents do send their children to school thinking that they're going to be safe. So as much safety that we can enforce in the schools, the better. Patsy Homes coordinate student and staff security for Baltimore County schools, which have been working on safety issues for the past two years. Among the measures in place, additional uniformed police officers in the county's high schools and middle schools, comprehensive building security checks for 166 schools, a behavioral management team to head off trouble before it happens. And a crisis management team should trouble develop in Baltimore County schools. The new school year will include these emergency procedural manuals and they'll be going into every school. Procedures outlining what to do in the event of a bomb threat or if students are found with weapons on campus, or what steps to take if violence does occur. And then there will be the drills so we can talk about, but not to the scale some schools are using to prepare for the worst, but a drill for every school where police, fire and students will participate in emergency scenarios. When we do the drills, the experts in those areas can tell us what we need to do to improve upon our plan or to make sure every kid is safe and that every precaution is taken a part of back to school in the wake of Columbine.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136504/file/253090#t=3785.48,3886.83"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136504/file/253090/transcript/71212/annotation/38","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Alex, Dimitri, Jay-Z, Eyewitness News. Eyewitness News is live on Sky Chopper 13, where Mike Schmidt has the story Mike. Right now, we are at 800ft above the Carroll Park Municipal Golf Course. Let's take a look down below. When you put up against some of these restrictions like they were and you got to watch, your grass dies, it's like watching one of your kids get sick and it makes you feel bad. He's reduced his watering by 75 to 80%. So now in some spots, there's not much difference between the asphalt and the grass. So far, we're still below normal. August today at BWI, 1.03in. That's all they've seen this week. And it picked up about 9500s of an inch in that one thunderstorm. Normally, we'd have 1.89in. So we still have a deficit for the month, officially a point eight, six inches almost, you know, like 8/10 to 9/10 of an inch. So we're still below normal for the month. So could use a lot more rain over a longer period of time. Let it soak a little more. Most of that range just ran right off. Come back and take the forecast. Slight chance as more rain this week. But it takes more than a mayor to make a city like Baltimore run. And that is why the players in the New York shuffle are attending an important forum right now at the Omni Hotel. Eyewitness News is live at the Omni Hotel downtown where Suzanne Collins has more on this important meeting of the minds Suzanne. Well, Kelly, let me give you an idea of who is here. Here's the guest list. You have the CEO of Provident Bank and other leaders of financial institutions Bell Atlantic, Alex Brown, IBM, and the heads of major non-profits or foundations. Also, this list goes on. Some live in the city and will vote, so their vote will count. But either way, surely the next mayor really needs big business whether they are living here and voting or not to help govern. Bell. O'Malley Stokes and Conaway answered questions for the past hour. And now the Republicans have taken the podium. Here's what the greater Baltimore committee sponsoring tonight's forum wants to see. In four years, the greater Baltimore committee wants homicide and violent crime reduced 50%, all crime cut by a quarter. And business wants drug addicts to have access to treatment. We believe that right now the crime rate is what people focus on when they think about Baltimore. And we think that that has to be dealt with. Well, I know they are concerned about education, and I'm the only one of the mayoral candidates that has been a teacher that's been in the overflow crowd in a classroom that has taught without, you know, an effective curriculum. And I know what the problems are. Do you think there's any chance a Republican can win when the registered numbers just aren't there? Well, I would like to think so. I think those cities that have had a substantial turnaround have involved Republicans in major Democratic majority cities. And I'm including Reardon and in Los Angeles, Giuliani in New York City. We so often hear from the three top Democratic candidates. We thought we'd give you a taste of some of the other ones that the GBK felt were important to invite tonight. And Kelly, the third priority for business is increasing the population in the city instead of it continually dwindling and then focusing on economic development. Okay, Suzanne Will, thank you. And Eyewitness News is going to have more on this for the next hour. Republicans Karl Adair, Arthur Coffey, Junior and David to follow. You just heard from will address the business leaders. And this final system will continue to press southeasterly. So there are some clouds with it and some scattered showers. Pretty hot and humid weather. However, right in front of this frontal system coming out of the Midwest, moving toward our region, too, is going to get a warm and humid tomorrow. Sticky and comfortable will probably be at 90 to 92 degrees. A secondary cold front, this is a little stronger, has some showers with it looks like it's going to move down and kind of start close to our region Thursday. No problems for us. And maybe just a couple of scattered clouds or showers in Bermuda the next day or so with temperatures in the 80s out there clear overnight tonight, pleasant conditions, light winds low 62 to about 70 down by the inner harbor. And then tomorrow, looking for a lot of sunshine, except late in the day, you start to see some increasing clouds. Michael McCreary on his way back from offseason surgery. Both did full contact drills today. First time either of them has taken a hit so far this season. I feel really good. I do better than I expected. You know, I was more concerned about the mental and physical because you know the back of your mind that you haven't done anything wrong. Prince Charles and his longtime companion, Camilla Parker Bowles, ended their summer holiday together in public. The couple, along with the prince's sons, William and Harry, had spent the last ten days aboard a luxury yacht owned by a Greek tycoon. A veritable army of paparazzi had been unable to track them down. The public display was seen by royal watchers as another step in the process of formalizing the couple's relationship. It was in sharp contrast to the start of the holiday when Charles and Camilla arrived on different days. The timing seems to be about right. Yeah, I mean, I think they should just get on with their life. It's nobody else's concern. Couldn't I have been the next queen of England? But let's give it a try. And just to add spice to it all, the public display of togetherness came a day after reports that Prince Charles had been threatened by harpoon wielding protesters. That incident occurred while the prince was swimming away from the luxury yacht near Cyprus. A royal bodyguard intervened when the prince set off a security alarm.
