We'll tell you how the city plans to deal with it and we'll find out what the Minority Contractors Association thinks about the state's new plan to help them next. Right here on Channel 13, Eyewitness News. This is Eyewitness News. Maryland's most complete television news service. With Dunn's guns and the Eyewitness News team. Hello. Right now, federal health officials are looking closely at Baltimore and several other cities as high risk locations for people suffering asbestos related respiratory diseases. Some of the people those officials would like to talk to are auto mechanics who come into contact with asbestos dust while doing brake work shipbuilders for at least of at least several years ago, and relatives of either of those two groups. Instead, I and I talked with City Health Commissioner Dr. John to Huff about the federal alert today, and he told me it comes as no surprise to him. About ten years ago, I had the Environmental Health Services people look into the dangers of asbestos in Baltimore, especially among construction workers, because that was where asbestos was pinpointed in New York City. It was being used for fireproofing of steel buildings. And I found out that we were not using it and not permitting it to be used in the fireproofing of steel construction. At that time, I was not aware of the of the asbestos in steel or in shipyard workers. And even if we had been, I think there would not have been the alarm set up by the city of Baltimore because so many of the workers that worked in the shipyard came from elsewhere in the country, nearby in the south and south west areas, and would have been in needless sort of an alarm. But there is this national alarm out now for people who've been exposed to it.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86958/file/175255#t=10.48,161.78"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/86958/file/175255/transcript/41918/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What is your city health department doing along those lines to alert people? And we want to support the activities of the federal government and of the military. We're looking for these cases of asbestos caused cancer. Enough says if you think you might have come in contact with asbestos, contact your doctor or city health clinic. There was also a Johns Hopkins clinic that would like to talk to you. It can be reached at 955, eight, 638 weekdays. The number again is 9558638. The head of the Maryland Minority Contractors Association is upset with the numbers mentioned in the a new state proposal that is supposed to guarantee more minority participation in state construction business. Doug Sands told our Jim Downing and it's deny the under $5,000 limit added to that bill and a two month time limit is not going to encourage minority participation. Just the opposite. It seems that instead of trying to have an impact in the area, that the bill apparently intends to have such an impact that instead he is testing public sentiment. And it would appear to me that the only result of that could be that if there is enough resistance from the white business community, that it will be abandoned. And I'm afraid that might happen again. Sands also told Jeanne this is not the original bill proposed, but one amended by the State General Services Administration. Barbara mikulski is still having problems with her house. She's being sued for some unpaid bills, but now she's saying someone else should be sued. Her contractor, a subcontractor, is trying to put a lean on the Mikulski's Bills Point house because he has been paid for a solar heating unit and legally he can do it even though the contractor owes him the money, not the owner. But Mikulski is asking the judge to now assign that debt to a contractor and not her. We'll do tonight a story that didn't quite make the Eyewitness News crime beat in Chicago's South Side. It's now safe again for fried chicken stores. Police there have finally caught the brothers, the notorious chicken bandits who've been knocking over their shops. Two policemen posed as cooks and then they nabbed the pair red handed. Or should we say sticky fingered? There were a lot of fuzzy paws, not sticky fingers at Tennessee State University this weekend. The William Penn Kat Club is holding its 22nd annual show this weekend. Long haired felines were on display today. The short hairs are up tomorrow. The cats will be scored on their poise, obedience and the shine of their coats. All in all, a hairy experience. Finally, one more animal story. That of thunder. The dog who? Water skis. Right now, experts in Dallas are ready to record a reenactment of John F Kennedy assassination tomorrow. The House Assassination Committee wants to compare tomorrow's recording of local police firing rifles similar to the one found at the Texas School Book Depository. The recording, made on November 22nd, 1963, on which some say four shots were fired, not three. We heard the dispatcher say ten for three. An officer then responds ten four. And at that point the first shot is fired and forth. And I will point out the shots as they occur. The people doing the recording tomorrow are the same men who analyzed the infamous 18 and a half minute gap on the Watergate tapes. What they're trying to prove is whether Lee Harvey Oswald had an accomplice, something thus far never proven. The New York Times correspondent, who apparently knows more about a New Jersey murder than police, is holding firm tonight. His newspaper has turned over its files, and Farber's attorneys have given the court the manuscript of the book he's writing on the case, but his notes are still in hiding and he's still in jail. One firefighter today talked about the old eight day old strike. We're going to have hard feelings, but I think in the end they're going to understand they've got to. Tonight, Memphis officials say they're happy the strike is over. And union leaders say they're pleased with the contract agreement. And life in Memphis can go back to normal again. All along the Eastern seaboard and right on Baltimore, absolutely no clouds whatsoever. That is going to change within the next three or 4 hours. But then again, it will go back to no clouds and we should have a great week. Here's a situation right now, a cold front that we've been watching move across the United States all week.
