Former Orioles manager Earl Weaver is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and you're not going to miss a thing. We have live team coverage, beginning with Chris Ely, unquestionably the greatest manager in Orioles history, certified today as one of the greatest managers in baseball history. For 17 seasons, Earl Weaver was the Orioles. In that time, he won six American League East titles, four American League pennants and a World Series. Today, the ultimate tribute enshrinement into the Baseball Hall of Fame, Mike Shew and Michael Esker join us live from Cooperstown, where they've been covering Earl's big day. Mike. Michael, it was a beautiful day today. Now it is, Jim, Brooks, Frank, Frank, and now kinds of guys. And Earl, who's not only a terrific manager, we knew that we always thought of him as this feisty guy who was going head to head with the umpires, who knew he would be a softy. The crowd started roaring. First thing he said was, don't make me cry. I don't want to cry. He was also. He also made a couple of references to his wife and his family all those times. And he couldn't be here because he was on the road being a manager, and he gave specific, tribute to his wife and told her that he loved her and that she you could tell she was she was emotionally, I think, she liked that. He was very gracious today. Yeah, it was wonderful. And, here's a look at what we found in. Cooperstown is like no other place on Earth. Look at the wrought iron. And you know the purpose here. Six hours from home, thousands have come here to honor one man the world. When you think about a manager, you think of Earl Weaver. He really was a larger than life figure. He was an interesting character. His image will soon be mounted here inside the hall, not far from Jim and Brooks. In a word, he makes O's fans proud of him and he deserves their hard working man does. Blue collar. But there is another Baltimore connection. Ned Hanlon managed the O's near the turn of the century. You should have known him because he was Foxy Ned all the way through his life. Oh, my mother, she's up there. She's been fighting for this when she was alive all her life. She said he should have been in there. So he's finally gotten in there at the ceremony. Who's the first person we run into? Yes. It's wild Bill Haig. Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow! As soon as he heard the crowd cheering, I think he felt like, I know these people and they know me, and it's going to be all right. But also, I think he also calm his nerves right afterwards because, you know, Earl doesn't mind having a beer and a smoke. And as soon as he got off the stage, he, he had he had the light went up. Everybody that we talked to up here, they all comment about Earl's person. What do you like about Earl? Well, I love this person. How did they ever find out about his personality? It was the huge roar of the crowd when he would come flying onto the field to argue with who? The umpires. And there is an audio tape that is being circulated right here in Cooperstown. Things are very commercial here, and it's a tape made back in the 70s where they put a microphone on an umpire. It's a meaningless middle of the season game, a meaningless call. And here comes Earl out of the dugout and he is screaming and hollering, and he is a man on the verge of a cardiac arrest. And it's just one little incident out of a season in which he screams and rants and race and says, well, I'm going into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Sure enough, he did. But it's an indication of the emotion that he brought to every call in the course of the game. And of course, during his acceptance speech, if you will, today, of course, what was one of the topics, his not so favorite topic? Umpires. And now it's time to recognize a group of baseball people that very seldom receive credit for a job well done. This group being the umpires in the American and National League. I. I'm serious when I say they're integrity, and honesty is and must be beyond reproach. They accept the players and managers ire and they never let it affect their next call. And also today he said some words afterwards and he said, you know, my parents everyday told me, don't get thrown out of this game. He said, I never went into a game expecting or wanting to be thrown out. So it happened once or twice or 91 times. We made a mistake. It happens. Yeah. Yeah. Back to you. The interesting thing about that, the arguing you're talking about, Michael, was it was a bit with Bill holler over a ball call by Mike Flanagan, and after the thing was all over, Weaver went by him and said, Mike, that's the ball. And Mike said, yeah, I did. So he lost the argument over, really over nothing. But I happened to be at that game. That was a terrific argument. Mike and Michael, thank you very much.
