Hi. Welcome to Evening Magazine. I'm Tim. And I'm Loni Anderson. Tim, I have a question for you. Who do you think one of the most beautiful women in the world is or the most beautiful. Other than my mother? Yeah, that's nice. You know, they got it all wrong. Thank you very much. Doesn't help the story. I've talked to a lot of people. I've been sort of doing a poll recently. A lot of folks think that Jaclyn Smith, former Charlie's Angels, is one of the most beautiful women in the world, if not the most. Tonight will meet her and find out what she's doing now. We'll also meet a fellow named Crazy Al or Weird Al Yankovic. It doesn't really matter what they call him because he plays a rock and roll accordion like nobody in the world. In fact, nobody else in the world really wants to. You'll meet Weird Al tonight. The Wizard of Fun tonight will make bath time for kids. Fun showing you how to play with crayons and toys made from soap. Jesse Green tells us what's happening this weekend, including the India Days Festival at the Hopkins Plaza. If you had bought this copy of the Ladies Home Journal back in September of 1972, you would have seen Mary Tyler Moore on the front cover. If you turn it over to the back, you would have seen a very beautiful woman who was then an unknown. Her name was Jaclyn Smith, and she was the Breck Girl for Breck Shampoo. Well, the rest is history. Jaclyn Smith went on to become one of the stars of Charlie's Angels. Admired as perhaps one of the most beautiful women in the world.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=60.49,196.1"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"What's she up to now that Charlie's Angels is no longer on the air? Well, let's find out. She's playing the role of Jackie O in a made for television movie. I caught up with her in Washington. London, England, the year 1953, the queen's coronation recorded for posterity by inquiring camera girl Jacqueline Bouvier. Working at the time for a Washington newspaper that's a cat once one look closer. Now it's really actress Jaclyn Smith, starring as the young Jacqueline Bouvier. Kennedy on location in Washington, D.C. for a new ABC movie based on the former first lady's life. Jaclyn Smith won this role right after ABC canceled the show that made her an instant star. Of course, Charlie's Angels recorded in TV history as the first action adventure starring women. It also catapulted relatively unknown but beautiful ladies to dazzling angel stars. I thought it was great for its time. I mean, it was the first of a glamorous show. It brought back glamor to television. It was three girls in a lead and it was fun and it was a good training ground. But I'm ready to go on to more challenging for you. Very good for me. Very. I mean, it's opened up a lot of things. Jaclyn helped create Charlie's Angels and stayed with the show through high ratings and low ratings, feminist sneers and revolving costars. But now, can a sexy former angel make it as a demure first lady? I don't know whether Charlie's Angels could cut it, quite frankly, and she cuts it better than I possibly imagine. I don't think there's anybody at this point who could have been around for the part. Steve Gathers wrote the script and directs Jacqueline in this new movie. She is a delight to work with.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=196.94,306.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"She is lovely. She is cooperative. She listens. She comes with ideas. And she is an matter of fact, a genuine surprise to me. How important is this role to you? Well, every role I do is important, really. This is a role I'm doing a very well known character and all the other roles could have an element of me in them in this one. This one can't. I mean, that's the challenge of it, because she is so known today, so recognizable. Does it would seem to me that that would put a lot of pressure on the actress playing the life of a woman who's so well known and who is alive will undoubtedly be watching it. Absolutely hate to have does. There is. I am a little nervous about it, but it's amazing when you get in the surroundings, when you put on the clothes and the wig and I'm studying books. It's very exciting. Jacqueline's career is definitely taking a turn, starring with pros like Red Buttons and Joan Fontaine. Jacqueline recently played a hard nosed, savvy prostitute in the ABC movie The Users. She desperately wants to be taken seriously to throw out the curvaceous, lily jiggling angel stereotype. Do you want to show people that you're more than just another pretty face? Well, the stereotype of a Charlie's Angels, yes, there that happens. And you keep fighting it. And each thing you do, you hope, is a step in the other direction towards, you know. You know, getting character roles. I consider this a character role. I understand that you own your own production company. Is that true? Right. It's called Productions and it's named after my grandfather, Gaston Hartsfield. So I haven't done anything yet because I have been on Charlie's Angels for five years and now it's all starting.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=307.32,407.8"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So I have time to do, to produce, to be behind the cameras as well as in front of the camera. Is that a major goal for you to to be a behind the scenes mover? Yeah, I'd like to. I'd like to. I've just come out also with a new perfume for maximum two called a pre. And I was in the. Design of the bottle top, the concept of the commercial. So it's it's all really it's it's fun to be in the behind is not always in front. Part of the art of being a woman is knowing when not to be too much of a lady. A pre I max factor. Her critics might be surprised at that shrewd business like practicality behind the beauty. Maybe she learned Hollywood's sad tradeoff for stardom when her marriage to fellow actor Dennis Cole broke up. I think that, you know, doing a television series certainly did not help my relationship. With my husband at the time was the hours were very hard and it was just very difficult to to maintain a secure home life with the hours. I think two people need to be as busy. You know, both people need to be busy and both people need to be involved. But then sometimes when two people are so busy, they never see each other. Right. But there's always time if you want to. There's always time to see and to communicate. And I think that's the answer. Communicating quality instead of quantity, quality time together. And if you have quality time and then you're okay. Now, I like most Hollywood stars, she remembers her roots. Certainly she's spoken out often enough and the stability that comes from being raised. An old fashioned girl from Texas. I run a home, so I'm a bit more complicated than just the typical old fashioned girl that goes home to a white picket fence and a beautiful home. It would be hard. Show business history is littered with the failed careers of actresses who relied only on their bodies and faces. Maybe, just maybe, Jaclyn Smith has the right combination of mystery, vulnerability and smarts to make her special. To prove the critics wrong. Just have an optimistic outlook on things. And I'm at a point now where I don't have to just jump from one thing into another. Charlie's Angels was five years, and now it's time to slow down and do just the things I want to do. So really, I'm just looking for the right the right projects. I'm very excited about this one. I think it's a right step after Charlie's Angels. Thank you. We'll be back with more evening in a minute. Well, if the dog days of summer have you down a little bit, we'll pick you up with tonight's department. Steve Canning, our Wizard of Fun, will cast a spell on how you can make toys from soap. Good idea. Joan Embery from the San Diego Zoo shows us some wonderful, furry little creatures with lots of legs and tails. And Jake Green tells us what's going on this weekend, including the Indian Festival, which is coming up at the Hopkins Plaza, having some trouble getting the kids to take a bath. Now, what could be more fun than floating around in the bath tub with your your lobster? Ooh, or maybe you'd like something a little more tassel, like a swan. Well, these are soap floats, and they're simply made by taking pieces of soft plastic, cutting them into shapes, and putting them into a bar of soap that floats. Here, I'm going to show you how to start off with a piece of soft plastic. Well, maybe it's a jar lid or an old wastepaper basket or maybe even an old soft dish pan. But the plastic must be soft. And then with a ballpoint pen mark on the piece of plastic a shape, this time I'm going to do something like a simple sail, nothing lighter than wood or toys that have something to do with water. Now, make sure that at the bottom of the shape that you cut out, you put a little spike. It's that spike. You're going to end up sticking into the soap. There's my sail and there's my bar of soap, and I'm going to do a little sailing over the ocean blue. Now, of course, there are those kids who like to make a little bit of a mess in the bathtub. And for those kids, what could be more fun than playing with soap? Crayons, yet crayons made from soap that you can draw all over the walls of the bath tub, all over the sink, all over the mirror, and they simply wash off because they're made from soap. Here, I'm going to show you the recipe. Now we start off with a bowl and is the bowl.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=714.04,781.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We're going to put about a quarter of a cup of water and into the water. And as I mix it up, I'm going to ask helping hand, would you add about 20, maybe 30 drops of food coloring? Now you can add whatever color you like. The more color you add, the darker it will be. But about 20 or 30 drops would be fine and you mix it up until it comes out to be a nice thick paste. I'm just gonna mix up a little bit in the center here to show you how, and once you have it mixed, you can scoop it up and either mold it in your hands into a ball. In this case, I'm going to put it into an ice cube tray and that's going to help form the crayon. And after you let it dry for maybe a day, two days, you end up with a soap crayon. I'll be seeing you next week with some more things you can make out of scrap. We usually think of kangaroos as ground dwelling animals, but these kangaroos are specially adapted to living in the trees. I am Joan Embry here at the San Diego Zoo with our good fellows tree kangaroos from the forests of New Guinea. Now comes two babies are joeys, as they're called, a tree. Kangaroo is like any other kangaroo or marsupial. After birth, the babies are raised in a pouch. This little fellow, or should I say good fellow, was about the size of a peanut when he was born. This makes it much easier for them to climb in the trees. They also have rough pads on their hind feet to keep them from slipping on the branches and sharp claws which dig into the woods. A tree kangaroos tail is smaller than other kangaroo tails and is used to bounce. Embrace the animal as it climbs. Land kangaroos are known for their great leaping ability. Tree kangaroos are good jumpers, too, only they travel from tree to tree. Tree kangaroos will venture from the branches and spend much of their time on the ground. It's believed that wild tree kangaroos climb the trees mainly to eat leaves and fruit and to escape their predators. These animals are seldom seen in captivity, and that's not because they're in danger of extinction, but because the forests of New Guinea are very inaccessible. But I have people ask me all the time, J.C., when is the streetcar museum going to open again? And I tell them that the streetcar museum is open again. It's open every Thursday evening and every Saturday and Sunday afternoon. And this Sunday afternoon, if you come down, you'll enjoy the Antique Motor Club of Greater Baltimore. They're going to be there. You could say it's old cars meeting old cars. In other words, you're going to have a great time, you and your entire family, if you're there on Sunday afternoon from noon until. It's going to be great. And a lot of people also ask me, how do you get to the streetcar museum? The road's closed. That's not true. To be at India Day 81 is to be a part of India Day 81. I'm losing the skirt again. I tell you, listen, as normal, the food is going to be delicious. As much food. There's many artifacts which I'd like to comment on. Personally, I think they're beautiful. You'll learn a lot about the people's neighborhood and their country, and it's just going to be beautiful. And as always, the food is going to be finger lickin good. Oh, this is fried chicken in style, honey. How about it? Have a great weekend. Thanks, Jackie. You know, not many rock and roll stars specialize in playing the accordion. Coming up next, you'll meet a guy who does. His name is Weird Al Yankovic. Don't go away. Well, like most kids who grew up in the sixties, see, I had these dreams that if I could just play the guitar, I could be like Phil Ochs or Bob Dylan or one of those people, or maybe even play the rock and roll band. In the end, I think I finally learned one chord, see if I can find it, and clearly forgot it. However, rock and roll isn't necessarily the arena of the guitar. Not these days anyway, since we found out about Weird Al Yankovic. Weird Al, you say? And rock and roll accordion. Sure. That's what takes us to meet Weird Al. Strike up the band. All three songs were at the top of the pop charts and all three fell victim to rock and roll parody writer and singer Weird Al Yankovic. Now listen to how great it. You want to go on? No heavy metals, just a mean lead accordion. Weird. Al's gained popularity or perhaps notoriety because of his hilarious rock and roll rip offs, and, of course, because of his weirdness. Do you think people need a kind of craziness? I think so. I think we live in times when, you know, when you need that kind of humor because there isn't a lot of musical humor around that anymore. Alan Sherman is gone and I'm hoping that. I think we need right off stage now seems pretty normal. He lives in Los Angeles and works during the week in the mailroom of a radio syndication company called Westwood One. And just like many other 21 year old guys, he recently graduated from college with a degree in architecture. But being weird, Al in his free time fulfills a fantasy that started when he was young. When did you start the accordion? When I was seven years old, I think I began taking lessons and I had lessons for three years. And after that I got tired of it and I sat down because I was just learning polkas and, you know, Mozart scores and whatever and that really. Really wasn't what I was into. According to be an acceptable Armenian for that. It seems to have worked out so far. His biggest hit has been another one Ride the bus. But Weird Al first received national exposure on the syndicated radio comedy show Dr. Demento. But the bottom line has just started in my bedroom with a little cassette tape recorder. And several years ago, I sent one of those tapes to Dr. Demento, who happens to be a friend of mine from Los Angeles who has one of those syndicated shows. He plays a series of old and new comedy and novelty tunes. And way back when I was in high school, he started playing my original tunes on the air and just continued for a few years. And then in 1979, I recorded a parody of My Sharona. I BELLONA And that was a pretty large success on the show. And it was eventually released on Capitol Records as a single Obi-Wan, everyone. The package of light and how to rock stars react to hours versions of their songs. I know a lot of artists are afraid to say those things, but that makes them, you know, come off sounding pretty bad. And we got it one Saturday afternoon and immediately threw it on the platter and it worked. I had like 50 calls immediately, you know, all through the afternoon. Hello, Karen. Nothing like the bus. Sure. Okay. Thank you. The phone calls are going bananas for this guy. He has made the accordion probably one of the greatest rock instruments in modern day music. Gentlemen, without any further ado, the sick man himself. Today's Tip of the Day, Weird Al Yankovic. At an appearance in Iowa City, fans had a chance to ride the bus with Weird Al. Riding the bus down the boulevard in a playful, creative act. I couldn't find a seat, so I had to stand with a pair of hands in the back row in like a locker room now touching all over the floor, already back in, lifeguarding last night and bugging me and the man standing next to me, he shouted in the air. Hi, I'm Tim White. You're doing a cigaret. Well, I don't you know, these things. You don't smoke any debonair with this life? No, I quit smoking, actually, about ten years ago. And I know how hard it is to quit. Tonight, we've got a story about another way to quit smoking. Dr. Solomon's injection method. They say it works for about half the people. Also tonight, we'll meet that lady from Motown, Diana Ross. We'll find out what she's up to now. A dynamic singer and entertainer. Ralph Cohen is with us tonight showing an easy way to make a butcher block table. Dr. Jim Glasgow, we'll let you know why fingernail care products can't help. We can. Brittle fingernails. And Linda Harris explores the fabulous nightlife of Mexico City. Seems like almost every magazine has these ads for elegant, sophisticated people smoking cigarets. Meaning if you smoke, you'll be elegant and sophisticated. And I guess it had quite a bit to do with why I started smoking way back when. The whole image of the thing and what you're into it hard to get out very difficult to quit smoking. Well, Dr. Neil Solomon of Baltimore physician has a new method to help people who want to kick the habit. And he does it with a shot. Sounds easy. Not really. Let's find out. I don't spend less than 225 a day on Cigarets, so there's always 225 every day. I'll smoke two packs at least. And if I haven't started a third pack, I'll have it because I want a beer in the morning. I don't want to panic in the morning when I wake up. I want the cigarets there. John Dean is one of 52 million Americans who smoke. And like thousands of others, he's been unsuccessful in trying to quit.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=2062.04,2156.56"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The first time I tried, I was 25. I was like, We set these goals. And I thought by the time I'm 25, I'll be rid of Cigarets and that'll be there. Actually, that lasted two weeks and then I tried again real hard when I was 28. That lasted about a week. I really was determined that when I turned 30 that was going to be it was really going to quit and try to take care of my body. But that lasted three days. That just didn't work either. Does this sound familiar? Wanting to stop, but not being able to kick the habit. These people have tried, usually just about everything else, and they failed. And so this is kind of the court of last resort. This is the last place they're going to try. Dr. Neil Solomon is a specialist in the field of endocrinology and metabolism. He's been practicing a new technique to help smokers quit, and he's seen over a thousand patients. I just don't feel well. I have a tightness in my chest all the time. There's days that I wheeze when I speak a lot. Going through the treatment costs $385. It takes 4 to 6 hours and it requires a variety of tests. Since 80% of smokers are actually allergic to tobacco or tobacco smoke. Dr. Solomon's technique is based on the idea that by injecting the exact amount into your bloodstream, the physical craving for nicotine will end. The longest patients that we had are now, as I say, three years. If we look at all the results totally up to three years, and that's information that we've gotten back. We find that over half the people have stopped smoking. I know of no other study, no other program that long term has these kind of results.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=2157.73,2270.22"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"However, our results are exactly what John is looking for. He's been smoking for 15 years and this time he says he really wants to stop. I think it's an expensive habit. I think it's a dirty habit. It's not good for you at all. I think it's affecting my health. I'd like to be rid of them, feel good, be able to run, not be short winded. Just be rhythm. John is a television art director, and he's sure that his job contributes to the habit. The job makes it hard to not smoke, a lot of pressure, stress, a lot of tension, tough deadlines. Smoking is my one way to take the pain away, I guess. Okay, now we did these four hits on the set. I have done these. Three is going to use a shot at. And there's no one reason why people smoke. It's no one program, therefore suited for everybody. It's an individualistic program based on the needs of the individual. Keep going. Keep going. Stop. One day, I'm going to continue playing that same breath until I tell you to stop. Okay. But I want the initial capacity of your coming out first. Okay. John did show signs of early lung damage, but so did an salt. A month ago, she underwent treatment and now her lungs are completely normal. And I told you that if you stopped smoking because you were young, you were healthy, chances are very good that you'd have regeneration, that we could actually show this within probably a month period that your test results should improve. From our standpoint, your success has been very different than what you thought it would be like. Whole lot. I am totally convinced I will never smoke again. Once you start smoking and the nicotine gets in your system and to keep that nicotine level at a certain high rate and amount, how long you continue to smoke? That's the physical addiction part. Doing the psychological habituation that you get to it is that here you put something in your mouth, you do this maybe a hundred times a day. If you think of every time you take a cigaret and put it in your mouth, take it out of your mouth, you're used to it. You get the whole lighting, doing it, putting down, and it just becomes ingrained into your reflexes and what you're doing and it becomes habituation. If you go into a smoke filled room, do your eyes smart. Yeah, I think so. Does your nose get clogged up? Sometimes you're allergic to tobacco smoke. And we're going to immunize you against that. Now, this shot that we're making for you. Is specifically made up on the neutralization dose that was found for you in the allergy testing room. But what this does is this you stop smoking, no more nicotine going into your system, but instead of you getting it faster because it goes out in your urine, you get a slow, steady release of nicotine, slow and steady enough that doesn't send signals back to the brain telling you that you need more nicotine. That's the theory behind this. Since the time John received the injection. He did stop smoking, but only for two weeks. What happened? I would say it was physical. Well, I mean, I really wanted it. I really wanted the cigaret. It wasn't like something to do with my hands, you know, or something out of just nervousness or something like. I don't know.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=2385.25,2505.79"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/18","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Yeah, I physically wanted it, I think. I mean, I'd be lying if I said that. It just totally eliminated it. I think it made it less. Less of a need. But I, you know, I wanted it. And the more the days went on, the more I wanted it. I don't know if he smokes. It's because psychologically he wanted to stay and he just smoked. So. And that's why it is useless to have somebody come in and get the treatment. Who does want won't stop smoking, but useless. So that's that you know, there's no magic. Absolutely no magic. On the other hand, it's really a crutch that can help you. If you've got the desire, it can help you be successful. And that's really what it's all about. And that. We'll be back with more evening in a minute. Doesn't it seem like everyone is buying one of those butcher block tables to put in their house or apartment? Well, coming up first in tonight's departments, Ralph Cohen is going to show you how you can make your own butcher block tabletop. Dr. Jim Roscoe will be taking a look at some of the fingernail care products out in the market these days. And Linda Harris takes us along with her to a city that never sleeps, Mexico City. But first, here's Ralph. Hi there. I'm Ralph Cohen for Evening magazine. Tonight, I'm going to be showing you a very easy way to make a butcher block type table top. Now, what I have done here is assembled some pieces of wood. I've cut them all the same width in the same length. And in each one I've drilled two half inch holes through these holes. We're going to put a threaded steel rod. Now, in this case, the rod is only 3/8 of an inch in diameter.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=2506.06,2680.45"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But that gives us a little play in the holes when we put the boards together. Now, on the table here, I have some boards which I've already assembled. And what I'm going to do is put our last boards together on here. But first, I want to make sure to put some glue in between the boards. This just keeps them from pulling apart. Even after we've assembled the wood. But this went on. Now, after we put the bolt through, we tightened them part of the way, and we take our board and lay it down on a flat surface to make sure at the top of our table will be even. And take our wrench and tighten these knots up all the way. Just like that. So the perfectly tight. Next, I've taken another piece of wood which we're going to use on the end as a cap and drilled a very large hole in it. As you can see, this will fit over the nuts and the washers on the end like so. And we take this piece of wood, but the plain piece of wood on top of it sit our table on the edge like this, spread some glue on it. And we just nail it down right on top. Like so. Okay, after we've hit our end zone, we're almost finished. Next thing we want to do is to use the sand or to sand the surface and the ends down perfectly well. Then we'll give it a coat of polyurethane to sort of finish off the top. Now, what you've done here is created a butcher block top and a fraction of the time and for a fraction of the money of a regular one. So come on back next week and we'll show you another way that you can do it yourself and save by buying brass nail problems are really a threat to health.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=2681.23,2777.94"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The condition and care of nails are a concern to many people. I'm Dr. Jim Glasgow. And nails are basically protein and they're the product of specialized skin cells that produce them like hair. Nails are basically dead, but they are a reflection of the overall health and condition of the body. Here's a quiz to see how much you know about nails and nail care. Brittle nails can be caused by a cold, whether it be exposure to lots of water. C Serious illness. D Nutritional deficiencies. Well, in the opinion of dermatologists that I've consulted, C and D are correct. Nails are a mirror of the health of the body, and therefore serious illness in the body or nutritional deficiencies will produce a problem in the nails. You should know, though, that most people's nails become more brittle as they get older because they're somewhat thinner, and people who use their hands a lot at birth will tend to traumatize their nails. Then they can crack and become somewhat more brittle. Gelatin is an excellent treatment for brittle nails. True or false? Well, again, according to the dermatologist, this is a common misconception. It's false. Gelatin will not increase the health of the nails. In fact, no specific food product will affect brittle nails. Nails, however, are a mirror of the nutritional or overall health of the body. Now, which of the following substances can harm nails? A False nails? B Nail polishes are hideous c vigorous manicures and D cuticle removers. Again, in the opinion of the dermatologist, all of these can harm or impair the growth of nails. The use of fake nails and vigorous manicures can impede the growth of the nails, and any strong chemicals used frequently on the nails can also impair their growth.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=2778.48,2874.81"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Despite what you may hear or read, nothing that you put on the nails will make them healthier or stronger. Hello. I'm Linda Harris on a very special great escape. I'm in Mexico City, one of the world's most unusual places, one of the highest cities at 7000 feet, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. And if the 1980 census is correct, it will be the world's largest with 13 million people. Well, as you can imagine, there is every kind of nightlife available here, but there are some things that you can only do in Mexico City. For instance, how about a romantic walk on this? The historic Zocalo at the city center is lighted only on weekends. It was an old Aztec market and the location of the halls of Montezuma. Nearby is the lush palace. It's the home of the ballet, Folklorico. The ballet is Mexico's pride and the visitors joy. Try not to miss it. The building is breathtaking, and so are many of the dancers. The dancers represent Mexico's various states and like dance the world over. Tell a people's most important stories of happiness, power, raw food and of course, love. The flashy, funny dances of Vera Cruz alone are worth the price of admission. And if the folklorico is just a little bit too tame for you and you're interested in something a little more earthy, why not? A trip to Garibaldi Plaza? You're coming to the Plaza. Don't be surprised if you see mariachis run out into the street. They're just trying to hire you so that they can play for a friend at 5:00 in the morning. There is a lot of nightlife, so I have one suggestion for you. Take that siesta because it's midnight and people are out here having a blast and they do it until the wee hours of the morning.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502#t=2875.5,2981.27"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/76301/file/162502/transcript/38971/annotation/22","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Have a great escape to Mexico. Thanks, Linda. From the elegant Linda Harris to the dynamic Diana Ross. That's next on Evening Magazine. She started out singing with two neighborhood girls at the age of 14 and tried to break into records. She was told no, finish high school. So she did. And after her graduation, she convinced the president of Motown Records to give her and her group a chance. That was the beginning of the Supremes, of course, and the Diana Ross story. Now, people all over the world love Diana. You're about to meet her. As evenings, Ray Marie takes us for a visit to Atlantic City. She emerged from the Detroit ghetto in the early sixties, and it's been superstardom ever since. From the Supremes to a solo singing career and the starring role in three movies, Diana Ross has been a leader in the entertainment industry for 20 years. Billboard magazine voted her the female entertainer of the century. Only Elvis and the Beatles have had more number one hit singles than Diana. Good for me. You know, I've been very lucky to have this kind of career that's nice and spare because most careers can be up and down very quickly. And I'm just very pleased, you know, that it's last this long and the records are around and I'm doing movies and television. It's all very exciting because the business changed so much, too. You're surrounded by people, I'm sure, all of the time, people who are concerned about your career. Do you have control over your own career? I haven't always had. For the truth is, I did start in 1960, right out of high school. I'm not going to tell you how old I was or how old I am. And I've been here and still I came to Atlantic City with the Supremes a long time ago, and we worked in steel here. And I remember having to have to run from here all the way out to the edge there to perform. But Diana doesn't have to run around anymore. Her name in gold and her handprints in cement were hanging side by side with Frank Sinatra's and a celebrity wall that's been put up by Resorts Casino, where she performs. Your ex-husband travels with you. How does that work out? We have such a marvelous relationship. I think we understood that it was difficult, my career and his career, and we made an adjustment to that. And the most important things were the children. So I feel like I cannot have loved someone for eight years. And just because of the divorce, I can't love them and be friends with him anymore. And we just worked it out. I hope this doesn't sound like something out of a movie play magazine, you know? But I like it. It has to be kind of difficult for you to go out to the movies, have dinner with any degree of privacy. Do you see that as a problem? I never think of my career or my life as a problem. So I go out to dinner and people say hello to me and I have to remember that they care about me and that's why they're saying hello. So I make it. I hold it in another way. I don't hold it as a problem. Diana's home box office special captures the warmth and electricity which has made her such a popular performer. If you need me, call me. No matter where you are.
