Right now the State Department of Labor and Industry is getting ready to go public with some frightening information about Bethlehem Steel's coke ovens. The ovens are said to produce emissions that cause cancer in the people who work nearby and at Bethleham Steel that means more than 1,500 men. As Labor Commissioner Harvey Epstein first told me exclusively one week ago, the workers may have to wear gas masks to protect themselves. Bethlehem may be forced to install special equipment on the ovens that will cost 50 million dollars. Epstein has set a news conference for three hours from now. We will update his findings and the danger of cancer tonight at six o'clock. Driving was hazardous also throughout the entire Baltimore area this morning. Icy streets were the problem after sub-freezing temperatures turned slush and melting snow into slick coats of ice. State police report that slick patches on the beltway made driving there a problem, but there were no serious accidents. The heavy rains, low temperatures and floodwaters that caused the problems have all disappeared. We'll have a full weather report later in the newscast. Close to 4,000 Cherry Hill residents were without electrical power early this morning. It was about 6.30 when power went out. Spokesman for Baltimore Gas and Electric tell eyewitness news that a cable connector at the Westport power station malfunctioned. BG&E work crews worked on the connector for over an hour. Power was restored by 745. Power is still out, though, in many Midwestern communities this afternoon after a killing blizzard swept across much of America's Midwest. Late this morning, President Carter authorized the use of federal troops and equipment to start digging out thousands of snowbound Ohio residents. The state is virtually at a standstill today after 65 mile an hour winds caused snow to drift up to 15 feet. There have been two deaths attributed to that storm, the most severe of the winter 78. Chicago, Cleveland, Louisville, and Cincinnati also immobilized as a result of the storm with schools and businesses closed and all transportation halted. Chicago's elevated train system was shut down for hours during last night's rush hour after two subway elevated trains collided. Dozens of passengers were injured, none seriously though. They were treated at area hospitals as transit authorities worked to separate the two cars. Service has been restored this morning and investigators are still trying to determine What caused that crash? The people who were riding Amtrak's Floridian passenger train may not be in Miami now, but they are safe and warm this afternoon. The train, which was en route from Chicago to Miami, got stuck in the huge snow drifts outside of Rochedale, Indiana late last night. The 60 people aboard were unable to get out and the train's boiler shut down in the middle of the night. Two rescue locomotives with plows rescued those stranded passengers early this morning.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149136/file/273748#t=103.42,263.84
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149136/file/273748/transcript/80274/annotation/4
Speaker 3: Well, Steve, it was a derailment that was causing problems for railroad officials here last night. It is minus four Celsius. Her high today around 30 degrees. So it was below freezing but certainly wasn't bitter by any comparison. 42 percent humidity winds west at 20 barometer rising. 29.87 inches. Taking a look at the satellite tonight, you'll see where the cold air is coming from, from central Canada, way up here, and it's moving across the central United States and moving eastward around this big storm center, which is still over Quebec, and slowly moving in an east-northeast direction away from our region, brought a lot of snow flurry activity and snow squalls still to the eastern part of the Great Lakes, and most of the Midwest today still had flurries of snow and some snow squall, with blowing and drifting snow continuing. Terminators throughout most of the Great Lakes and Midwest. Around the 10 degree mark or less all day today. Chicago had a high of 8 degrees today with snow. New York 27, generally the 30s and 40s down to our south. Nice weather actually moving in and looks like we'll see some sunshine, although with the storm still in this proximity we'll have some moisture coming in from the Great Lakes, might bring us some occasional cloudiness drifting through. No snow expected here. Now tomorrow, 24 hours from now, we're going to watch this Little Storm. Possibly develop. It doesn't have much energy and we've been looking at a possibility of a storm development here in the Rockies, the eastern part of the Rockys, the last three or four days. Nothing's happened. It appears that this, we will have at least a low pressure system by tomorrow afternoon and this might bring us a little precipitation, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday. It's a long way off so we won't even, let's not talk about it. Generally, high pressure from northern part of Saskatchewan all the way down across the eastern United States will of cold weather. Below normal temperatures all over the eastern half of the United States. It's below normal over most sections right now, 13 in Morgantown with some light flurries of snow out there, 26 DC, 17 Harrisburg, 20 Wilmington, 23 Dover, 27 Salisbury, 10 to 25 northwest winds tomorrow, gonna be a little gusty at times and three-foot waves on the bay. Here's the forecast for tonight, partly cloudy and cold, low from 8 to 16 degrees. Tomorrow, rather breezy still. Under partly to the very blue cloudy skies high from twenty two to twenty eight a partly sunny cold sunday high of twenty seven so it will be a cold weekend here while one of the last weekends in january by the way i believe it is let's see yes it certainly
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149136/file/273748#t=3135.61,3293.38
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149136/file/273748/transcript/80274/annotation/119
Speaker 17: Well, the days are getting longer, though, and the temperatures should start to get warmer.
text/plain
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149136/file/273748#t=3294.28,3298.0
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149136/file/273748/transcript/80274/annotation/120
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149136/file/273748#t=3297.91,3299.61
https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/149136/file/273748/transcript/80274/annotation/121
Speaker 17: Thank you, Robert.
