Well, that's all something local kids really want to be. Oh, and what about. And what about me? I'm standing here in front of Memorial Stadium in an original 1947 Baltimore Colts marching band outfit. We're going to get some of the history of this 50 year old wonder band coming up. He's really not a know. No. That is such a cute little outfit. It was Kelly Sanders on Team Williams. Welcome to Eyewitness News Saturday morning. And I'm Katie Larson of game day. We are psyched and we're planning on getting you in the mood to all next on Eyewitness News Saturday morning. You're watching WJZ TV. This is Eyewitness News Saturday morning. With Katie Larson. And Tim Williams. And good morning once again everyone. I'm Katie Le hand. I'm Tim Williams. You know, this is a great day. This is a really great day. A historical day for a lot of people waiting for this. Is that thunder right here or. Yeah. I think the wall tumbling. The football gods are smiling on us today. Of course. You know. Okay. We are. We are ready. We are ready for some football. Well, that's a way to really wake people up, isn't it? Are you real? So definitely. I'm telling you, this is, of course, the first day of the Ravens preseason, game or preseason season. Yeah. Philadelphia Eagles. Yeah, it's going to happen. Memorial Stadium, battle of the birds. Yeah. And there's a live weather picture. This is Memorial Stadium. Of course, everyone knows that. The Ravens logo on the side, they're really putting a game face on down at Memorial Stadium. 33rd Street has never looked so alive and. And well, not since the Colts. Not since the Orioles have left, I guess. And. Well, no, can't say that because of stallions, of course, brought their own brand, but the Ravens are putting their own flavor to 33rd Street now. You know, there's really a lot of excitement generated around the NFL. So we can certainly understand why people are treating this a little bit differently. Yeah, but no excitement though with the weather. It's not going to be a great weather day for anything really. Today is going to be mostly cloudy. Right around game day. You can probably expect some scattered showers, you know, really all through the day. AccuWeather saying that the showers will linger all through the evening with some thunderstorms kicking in the game day temperature, though, about 82 degrees. That's pretty, that's probably apropos for today. The Thunder is going to really be kicking in, but the thunder of the roar and the seats and the bleachers, people stomping on the, you know, on the bleachers, that's going to be the thunder. Most people are going to be tuned in today, so that won't really matter. Let's hope so. Yeah. Let's hope. And we'll be back with the full forecast. Yeah, I have a full, AccuWeather forecast, including a five day forecast a little later on.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=127.42,213.88"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But we have some news. And yes, let's first take a look at the headlines this morning. This is the day Baltimore football fans have been waiting for for more than ten years. Tonight, NFL football returns to Charm City. And, the Baltimore Ravens, as we mentioned, are going to be taking on the Philadelphia Eagles at Memorial Stadium. Let's, begin our team coverage this morning of this momentous day, beginning with Alex Demetric, who says the crews have been working very hard to give the old stadium a new shine. If it's said, is in the details and detail. Work is what it's come down to. Whether it's the painting of a brand new logo on 33rd Street for a brand new football team, or the relining of 5000 old parking places. Preparations are coming down to the wire, especially after a week of heavy rain with all the rain the beginning of this week, and it's probably going to take two and a half days to do the job, but we didn't get started until early yesterday. So you're under the gun? Well, everybody is, whether it's under the overhang or down in the seats. The multi-million dollar refurbishing and Memorial Stadium is in its final stages, right down to polishing up the beer taps, the work and the beers. You know, all the stuff that they use. It's more stuff. It's a whole lot more stuff. It's a whole lot more stuff. Usually we can fit all of the beer for the CFLs in the frigerator downstairs. Now we can fit half of it in there. Expecting a huge crowd tomorrow night. Over 65,000 people, some of whom showed up at the box office looking for tickets. I don't really care at this point. Put me behind the scoreboard.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=214.12,305.7"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I'll be right there. But cost and inconvenience are not the point. So that's our first game. It's the first game is his history. In a way, it's history. So I want to be a part of it. And businesses nearby hope to be part of it as well. Whether it's a hot dog stand, it's good to have a lot of people coming through the area. You know, it's exciting to hear like old times or the corner gas station there. Nobody can be moving around here, so there's no sense try to sell any gas and we're going to try and parks because I won't be a little cheaper. I think I'm like, I can't tell you what a matured. But while everyone's looking for a piece of the action, just getting ready can feel pretty good. It's a part of you going out on the field, you know, and you take so much crowd and you see the people in the stands and and you know that you have prepared everything for them. You know, it's a lot of people don't know what's going on behind the scenes. And, you know, even though you might not get know recognition, you know, that it's a behind the scene work has been done, you know, and we are very much proud of that. You very much part of that for the weekend team Alex Dietrich, channel 13 Eyewitness News. Now we're told that there still are some end zone seats left for tonight's game. But you better hurry because they're bound to go quickly. That's right. That is precisely what I would say, Tim. The quiet before the storm and the storm before the storm. It's really starting to rain pretty heavily. But don't I look like a jockey this morning? This was the, the look, the intended look for the 1947 original Colts Marching Band. And joining me is John Zimmerman. Affectionately known as. I pressed him into service. You're holding the umbrella. You got umbrella duty because it's boring. That's right. But still, I got us coming out this year for the game, and we're going to be here today. And, like I said, from, I guess, 430 on, we got rehearsal this morning, but this is our comeback to Baltimore now, Z, I don't know if I told you guys, Z is the president of the Baltimore Colts Marching band. Give us a little history. Like this outfit that I feel a little like Sherlock Holmes. Cross between Sherlock Holmes and a and a jockey. This was the first uniform. Yes. In 1947, the band started right across the street. September 7th, 1947. That's when we're with the All America Conference. Baltimore Colts, 1950. We went into the NFL, the 1950. There was no team. After the end of the season, 5152. The band stayed together. Then, of course, the Colts came here in 1953. Well, like Z, Z works in TV for another station to him, but that'll come up a little later as we continue our look back and ahead with the Baltimore Colts Marching Band, the official musical unit of the Baltimore Ravens. Oh, I got it right, Kelly. All you're missing is a baton, right? Oh, but doctors got the baton, and doctor is going to spin it for us a little later on to it. In other news to report to you this morning, police are still searching for the gunman who shot two men inside a truck at a West Baltimore Street corner yesterday. Police tell us a gunman walked up to the truck at the corner of Baker and Monroe streets yesterday and started shooting. The victims jumped out and ran, causing their truck to slam into a parked car. They collapsed in a nearby parking lot. We were just out here doing our daily thing, washing cars and fixing cars, and all of a sudden we just heard a shooting and crash, boom, boom, boom town, help someone call the cops and we call the cops and they. The white truck is due today. The blue car over here. 37 year old Wayne Smith is in critical but stable condition. He's a shock trauma. 25 year old Desi Smith is in stable condition this morning. Perry promises strong action against any organization involved in the attack, and the woman killed by the bomb that went off at the Olympic Centennial Park was laid to rest in Albany, Georgia, yesterday. More than a thousand people went to support the family of 44 year old Alice Hawthorne. She was standing with her 14 year old daughter when the pipe bomb exploded last weekend. Her daughter wasn't seriously hurt. Meanwhile, the FBI still hasn't made any arrests in the case. They say they simply just don't have enough evidence to connect Olympic Park security guard Richard Jewell to that bomb. Well, the bomb did not destroy the Olympic spirit. She certainly captured our hearts with her courageous vault, and she also helped the U.S. women's gymnastics team win an Olympic gold medal while she did it. But it was really. Was it really the most intelligent decision for her to make health wise? Let's go over to Tim now for some answers. Well thank you Katie. Well, it was a gutsy performance, but should Olympian Kerri Strug have even gone for that gold with that final vault? Well, here to talk about Kerri Strug and other athletes, especially all of you weekend warriors out there who are forcing yourselves to to actually perform under pressure, under duress, physical duress is doctor Bill Howard with Union Memorial Hospital. Good morning. Good to be here this morning. It's a question I guess we can expand on, because Kerri Strug is kind of a springboard, so to speak, into this topic. Tell us about what you think will lead you to the whole topic. To start with, let me make one point and I believe this wholeheartedly. If you play sports, you're going to get hurt. That's part of playing sports. And if you don't want to get hurt, write a book. Those that can do right? That's right. Just do it as part of the game. We talk about weekend warriors, people who really do go out and compete. You get hurt. You say, you know, I'll just move on through it. I'll move past the pain. Is that a smart thing? No, that's not good. If you're hurt. Stop healing up. Let it heal, and then go back to playing the sport.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=1265.72,1351.56"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/15","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But in Carrie's case, she didn't have that luxury. She can have that much time. And I really think she did the right thing. And there's been some talk about having a timeout to check the ankle and to check and see whether or not they need the points. Wait and see if the Russians had gone ahead or not. And that sounds reasonable. How can anybody deny that's the right thing to do? I think it's wrong. What's wrong? Well, suppose she waits ten minutes and they check the ankle on the way for the Russian. And suppose now the U.S. is behind and they need to jump ten minutes after the sprain. She can't do it. You've got a window there that's in. Yeah. It gets swollen. It gets painful. You got about a minute. Two minutes tops. You can still go ten minutes. She's no way. No. The other side of this too, is that all of these Olympians and a lot of the athletes that we're talking about are young now. These kids are 19, 14. You know, I think there is more on you. Yeah. She fell on her head on the balance beam, you know. Yeah. The routine. Really? Now, what about kids? I mean, any more risk involved when they're children involved? Not really. And the truth is, when you get to be an Olympian, you've come up and you're going to compete. I mean, that's the way you are. If you get a sprained ankle and you stop, you get dropped off at lower levels. To be an Olympian, you keep on going no matter what, and you're really not going to get hurt. First, some of the news making news this morning, thanks to an underwater camera, a very important piece of the wreckage from flight 800 has been found. Investigators are encouraged by last night's discovery of the plane's cockpit. And although it is still in the water, other large parts of the plane were also pulled out yesterday. Think what we have is the, is the forward windows from one side to the other wrapped around. And, in that part of the cockpit, we were able to get the ROV and behind it to take a look and see exactly how much of it is there. Investigators are hoping the examination of the cockpit will help decide if it was a bomb that caused the 747 to crash, killing everyone on board. The FBI still has not ruled out a missile or a mechanical failure though. Two divers got the bends yesterday and they had to spend four hours in a decompression chamber. Well, horrifying sight for tourists visiting the Grand Canyon yesterday. They watched as a small plane slammed into the canyon South rim.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=1682.08,1768.67"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The pilot was the only person aboard. He was killed. Investigators are getting conflicting stories, however, from witnesses. Some say the pilot did loop de loops before the plane went down, while others say it hit straight into the canyon wall. Well, there is also a report that bad weather could have been to blame. Katie. Now let's take a look at some of the big stories that happened around Maryland this week. Here's Denise Coke. Hello, everyone. A tiny find at a Baltimore gas station tops our Maryland Week in Review. A customer at the Crown gas station at Northern Parkway in Wabash made a surprising discovery Monday morning. A newborn baby boy wrapped in a blanket had been left behind some shrubbery that came over to use the phone, and I could hear a baby crying. And I went over there and I saw, a little tail, and I picked it up and I put it in my car, came back over and called 911. The infant was taken to Sinai Hospital, where the staff has named him Baby Coral. Police are still searching for his mother. They say practice makes perfect, and no one knows that better than Baltimore's golden girl. Beth Botsford, the Olympic gold medalist, was back in the pool at the Meadowbrook Aquatic Center early Monday morning. She plans to return to Atlanta for closing ceremonies. A scary trip down the gunpowder River for some young Baltimore. 14 children and two adults from the Rosedale Center were dumped into the water when their canoe capsized. Okay. Got him. Give him your paddle. We went to a current and we tried to flip to turn our boat around, and we ended up flipping over and I ended up going down river. And if it wasn't for lifejacket, I woulda drowned right about now.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=1769.45,1869.68"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Fortunately, all were wearing life jackets and everyone was able to be rescued. A cookout in Carroll County turned out to be an experience two teenagers won't soon forget. 20 year old Amy Whitfield was struck by lightning when a boat hit a tree that traveled through a spatula. She was holding her 19 year old boyfriend, Jamie Wilkins was also hit. Both were treated and released from the hospital. And later in the week, word that slot machines may soon be coming to Baltimore. Governor Glendening and Mayor Schmoke have apparently agreed to back a plan that would bring 12,000 slot machines to Maryland. The deal could mean $100 million for Baltimore schools over five years. If the legislature gives the okay, most of the machines would be placed in Maryland's racetracks and off track better parlors. All right. Thank you, Denise. And so far, by the way, the governor and the mayor aren't commenting on the deal. That's right. But there are plenty of comments about NFL football coming back to Baltimore today. Of course, the excitement is building for tonight's battle of the Birds at Memorial Stadium. And that's where we find the weekend team's Kelly Saunders once again. Kelly, what's going on? Tim I'm still just getting off wearing my original 1947 Colts marching band uniform. And joining me now is the drum major of the Baltimore Colts marching band, doctor Jack Faith. Right? Absolutely. Kelly, it's a pleasure to be here. Yeah. Thank you. This is extra special because the doctor would never tell us. But he is not only a psychiatrist at Sheppard Pratt, but he is also a neurosurgeon and was called into surgery until 330 this morning. No, no. Yes. Well, so how long have you been with the band? Actually, it's year 21 with the band, so it's been an interesting 21 years, but I can't honestly remember a more exciting day than what we're about to have.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=1870.22,1973.58"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/21","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Okay. Well, it's a fantastic way to stay in shape if you do it the right way. And I'm talking about roller blading, as you might imagine. And Jason Kram from Graham Fitness Enterprises is skating in to join us today. And thanks a lot for joining us, Jason. First of all, Roller Blade is actually a brand name like Kleenex or Jell-O. That's correct. Or like Coke, right. Roller blade. Preferably in the industry, we like to say inline skating, because that way you don't exclude some of the other brand names that there are out there. But, Roller Blade is, one of the, one of the brand names that got got the whole thing started. And, and it's one of the preferable brands that people like to go out and purchase. Okay. For some people who don't really know a lot about roller blading, maybe you could skate around a little bit and just tell us what are some of the things you should look for when you're buying skates? The most important thing that a beginning rollerbladers should know is how to stop on skates. So okay, I'm going to show you is actually how to stop. I see it all the time. People are out there and they're skating and they're going around, etc. but the most important thing, when you're skating and you're trying to learn how to stop, is keeping your knees bent and using your hips and your glutes to actually try to stop with the skates and push down on the skate.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=2183.45,2275.49"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/24","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"So if I'm coming from back here and I'm skating and push down and keep my knees bent, and then I can actually stop the skates. So you're actually stopping with your heel, right? Right. And now some of the more advanced skates even have something that when you flex your ankle, it will push down and the brake will actually come down for you. So they've really done some really advancements to try to improve stopping ability with the skates. Now I usually stop all on my own just by falling down and it helps to have these pads on. That's necessary. Absolutely necessary. I had a family member that ended up in the emergency room and didn't have, and he took his elbow pads off, had a really terrible injury towards towards his elbow, but luckily had his head his head gear on. And you should have seen the dent that it left in in this helmet. So yeah, the pads are very, very important to and I cringe when I see people out there skating on these little pads and they're not wearing their pads or some of the kids with no helmet, no pads. Exactly. Gosh, I want to just like the parents. Exactly. Now, you also very important to get a lesson. Yes, yes. Actually a lot of the skate shops nowadays, if you actually go out to some of the skate shops to purchase skates, some of them will actually offer lessons to beginners. So that's something that I strongly encourage people to do the first time they go out and they actually try to get skates. Otherwise it can be really an unpleasant experience if you don't know what you're doing. If you can't get a lesson, maybe go out and go. Go with someone who's done a fair amount of skating in the past.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=2275.85,2359.19"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/25","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Look at that guy doing some things I could do that you can go, why don't you do that for seniors? Well, even though, it doesn't look like Mother Nature will be cooperating for tonight's Ravens game, there's still plenty of anticipation. Team coverage. Reporter stance. I think when the Baltimore Colt Marching Band takes the field in the pre-game, I think it will bring some tears to some people's eyes. Talk about an eyeful. Hey, look this over the big bad Ravens symbol sitting proudly on the 50 yard line. This is the first time that, this particular shield has ever been painted anywhere, any place. And, that's real special to me. And. And what if it rains late tonight? Well, that messed up everything. No. Once the paint gets dry, you know, it'll it'll be okay. And sure enough, in came the rain tonight. However, the fresh paint job passed the test with flying colors, no pun intended. Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, and welcome to Historic Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. Tonight's game features your Baltimore Ravens against the Philadelphia Eagles. And we're doing a dress rehearsal tonight so we can find a way around, because some of us haven't been here very often. There are some fans probably know the stadium better than the staff right now. Meantime, wishful thinking filled the air thanks to the final score already being posted hours before game time. The food hasn't been prepared yet, but the pictures that'll make you hungry are just about in place. How's that? Oh yeah, there will be plenty to wash down. All the food. All the food you'll probably buy from concession stands within the stadium or in the new end zone. So much for us, the fans, though. What about the most important guys? The players? Send it back to the hill. We'll be back with more from 33rd Street a little bit later Chris Ely. Okay. John, as you as you see, as we could see from the video, there was excitement at least at one point, and they sure did get out in a hurry. John, I'll have more for you when I come back in sports. As the Ravens open up the exhibition season with a 17 nine victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, and he gave away the ball. Yeah, I don't believe it. Something that you see in several among several teams where the receiver catches the ball. And if the fans are right there, he'll run and give a bunch of high fives and give somebody the ball. There you go. That's a cool, cool touch. It was all right. Thanks, Chris. Okay. Well, as you can imagine, it's been a wild night for Baltimore football fans. And Stan Saunders is definitely a fan. Even as we speak, he's putting on his game face. The question is, Stan, did you go wild out there with him? That you know me, I know you. Why do you even ask that? You better believe I was going, wow, somebody had to hold me down. They almost arrested me. I was having such a good time. Oh, did these folks get what they wanted? They came in here ready? We learned that a long time ago. There's no free love in the NFL no matter what. Practically every fan in here either cheered or jeered every single play. Well, they exercised their money to exercise their mouths. So what do you expect? Let's go Eagles! Oh, guys. That. He passed away hours before the crowd arrived. No tailgating was strictly enforced and parking was tight. Every other city has a football team. It's the only city you don't give us a team. No tailgate party makes no sense. He argued better than anybody in the history of baseball. I think he was the best. I mean, I don't think there's anybody better that not just for the for the players, but for the fans. He really got the fans involved in the games. Fans on board this bus to Cooperstown are remembering Earl Weaver's antics and his style on the field, and how he was able to ignite a fire beneath the team. He was always out there arguing with the umpire. He didn't let them get away with anything. He wasn't afraid to go out on the field and fight for the team. And, that's what I remember about him. He was great. Kick the dirt. Used to get, like, right off an umpire stays. At one point, he started turning his calf around so that he didn't hit him with the cap. He would, like, just put his hands on his hips and scream, and he was just funny to watch.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023#t=7017.55,7112.66"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136430/file/253023/transcript/71264/annotation/71","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I've heard a lot about him. I've seen him on bloopers, tapes and stuff with the way he, catchers. Yeah. The umpires, that's what I liked about it. It's been a long road for the Orioles, skipper. Nearly two decades to make the journey from his home in Perry Hall to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. The Orioles could using, you know, just to fire them up a little bit. I think that's the biggest problem. They don't have any fire. You better get going, We all love him for the weekend. Team Brenda Karl, channel 13 Eyewitness News. Everybody remembers Earl Weaver for the arguments with the umpires for what he should be known for. Is winning all those games and keeping that bench alive and keeping everybody in the game. And that is really was the hallmark of his championship seasons. When we come back, we can hear the sound. That's the Colt band.
