We we walked to mountain fairgrounds for an hour looking for that reindeer. Gai woke me up in the morning screaming, somebody stole the flag and the reindeer. And I was barely awake. I said, Why? I couldn't believe it. The Carrasco's moved here just four months ago. It's their first Christmas in their new home. But as the stolen Christmas wreaths pile up at the Charleston precinct, it's clear they aren't the only ones targeted by holiday thieves. Baltimore County police say a total of 15 Christmas wreaths were stolen over the weekend from the Rogers Forge Stoneleigh area and they may be closing in on a suspect. One of the riggers went out, went into this, fell through the cement. The truck fell over and the tree went down. It was terrible. I just started screaming. Oh, my God. Luckily, neither the tree nor any of the workers were injured in the accident. Work proceeded and the tree was finally hoisted into position. It will soon be decorated with thousands of lights. The Arkansas Supreme Court has ordered the lights and volume on a Little Rock Christmas display dim this year. The 3 million light extravaganza drove neighbors crazy because of the bright lights, the loud music and the traffic jam created when people came to see it from all over Arkansas. Today, the state Supreme Court ordered the lights dimmed to a level that won't attract the usual crowd. The homeowner's lawyer warns the fight is not over yet. Last year, when ordered to tone down that display, the man doubled the number of Christmas lights. Lucky to have that in your backyard. No, I don't think so. Trying to sleep at night? Well, there is a fight over a controversial product that's being waged at Baltimore City Hall tonight. Bulletproof vests are taking some heavy flak as Baltimore's police union asks city hall for a law outlawing the sale of body armor to the general public. Then last month came a bulletin board and a business called Second Chance Safety, which sells bulletproof vests over the phone. The ad caused an uproar in the community, and the billboard quickly came down. But the phone sales continue, and that's what the police union wants stopped. Under the bills submitted tonight, only members of law enforcement agencies will be able to buy body armor, as well as license businesses that prove a need for protection and pass a background check, according to the police union. Taking an informal agreement and turning it into a formal law is necessary at this time because they say the criminal element in this town wants very much to get their hands on body armor and bulletproof vests as a way of protecting themselves against police and making them more dangerous. However, the man who runs the business says that there is no risk here, that he personally screams out all of the calls and he doesn't sell to anyone who sounds suspicious and that he was also never sold to a criminal. Richard. Alex, is the NFLPA successful in getting this law on the books in the city or he stop there? Or is there something else you're going to do? Well, the FBI claims they want to take this all the way to the the state level. They're going to go to Annapolis this winter and petition their for a law to do the same thing statewide. Yesterday, 219 year old men were shot to death in a house in the 200 block of North Street First Street in East Baltimore. Sean Brown and Donnell Sullivan were pronounced dead at the scene. A couple hours later, a robbery victim was found dead in a house on Monterey Street in southwest Baltimore and shootings last night on East 25th Street and East Land Vale Street left two more people dead. There was a major effort to cut down on the gunfire this weekend and what's being called the most successful gun buyback program ever in the city. Attorney Warren Brown spent $15,000 of his own money to buy back 265 guns. Actually, it's having a very significant impact in the African-American community, particularly not only the victims who were shot and their families, but the little kids who hear gunshots and take it almost for granted. Now, the people who run for cover, my goodness, when I was growing up, if we heard anything that sounded like a gunshot, we figured it was a car backfiring. Now people know that it's guns, and it's it's it's a travesty, actually. Police will run ballistics tests on the guns to see if any were used in crimes before they're destroyed. And, of course, he's taking the stand in his own defense. Officer Canada is charged with raping a woman during the investigation of an auto theft case. Today, the prosecution presented crime lab testimony that a condom wrapper brought to police by the woman does, in fact, have a partial fingerprint on it, identified as Canada's left index finger. When Officer Canada took the stand, he explained that he and his partner had reason to believe that the suspect they were looking for in the auto theft case was in the woman's house. He says he went into what appeared to be a child's bedroom and saw the condom wrapper. So he touched the wrapper and said to the woman, What is this? He said that the only reason that he was in the bedroom was looking for the suspect. He says he did not touch the woman. He says he did not rape her. Richard, Pat, that print on the wrapper. Is there a feeling that could be enough to convict him? Well, it depends on who the jury believes in this case. Of course, you have to keep in mind that the woman who is testifying against Officer Canada was also arrested in that auto theft case. She was arrested in the case. And they could assume that she had a grudge against him. That's an assumption that the jury could make. On the other hand, Officer Canada says that he did not. The condom to rape the woman, but only to point to it as an indication that he thought her boyfriend might have been there. It's up to the jury. Pat, thanks very much. Dan Quayle continues to recover from a blood clot in his lungs. He's been in the hospital since Monday when he was complaining of chest pain and having trouble breathing. In Annapolis today, Governor Schaefer gave a citation to Alice Boston, a foster mother to 25 children. Alice is 80 years old and is cared for foster children for 45 of her years. In fact, she's still an active foster parent taking care of a four year old and an 11 year old Alice, as she raised the children in the church holding choir practice in her kitchen, still works for the church, volunteering to distribute food and clothing to the needy one day a week. Congratulations. That is really terrific. Alice Boston. All right. Still to come tonight on Eyewitness News, a true test of parenting. We'll take you to the hospital where they're having a special reunion for parents of triplets and wives. Here's the action on Wall Street today. The Dow Jones Industrial Average down almost three and three quarter points. The Nasdaq up little over a half. Eyewitness News at five. We'll be right back. You know, when I was a teenager, we had this neighbor who couldn't put anything together if his life depended on it. So every Christmas Eve, he would call us up and we'd end up going over there and help him put all the things together. Yeah, sure. You know, like three or 4:00 in the morning. Oh, my goodness. So people were getting given way back when you were a teenager. You had to say way back. For those of you just joining us, here is a quick recap of tonight's top stories. A Baltimore County family is in the Christmas spirit now that they have their decorations back. Someone stole Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and a Santa Claus flag from Carrasco's porch in Idlewild over the weekend. County police recovered the missing items, along with about 15 wreaths stolen from Stoneleigh and Rogers Forge. A mishap delayed the erection of a giant Christmas tree in front of city hall today. The crane lifting the tree into position suddenly overturned. Luckily, no one was injured.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/75071/file/161152#t=1423.51,1554.93"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/75071/file/161152/transcript/38617/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The 60 foot blue spruce was donated by Bernie Shammo of Hamilton. When it comes when it comes to parenting, no one gets more experience faster than the parents of triplets or even quadruplets, as the fabulous Wendy Leibovich reports tonight. Some of those veterans of multiple midnight feedings and assembly line diaper changes got together in Minneapolis today. Hold on, Bob. To exchange more stories, here's Wendy. One by one, twos, even threes, some in rows and some side by side in a rumble seat. If you think having one is hectic, imagine having two or more. Tom and Linda Invovled are living it. After seven years of taking fertility drugs, Linda finally got pregnant with Molly and Joey. We knew it. We'd have a lot of sleepless nights and that sort of thing. So it's like it's going to be like this week. We kind of thought we'd get them on the schedule. That was our plan. No schedule. Joey is on oxygen, but he should be off of it soon. Doctors say improved medical technology is helping Joey and other multiples who years ago wouldn't have made it. Better technology, more understanding of the fragility of these babies and how how they need to be handled and the centralization of care. They went through in-vitro fertilization and now have a house full of kids. Once we've kind of set up the routine, the daily routine, it's really been pretty easy. Multiples are also expensive. The deceased had to buy a bigger car and more clothing, and feeding for three really adds up. All the families told us that multiples are a lot of work, but they're a lot of fun, too. As Mike said, it's much better than we ever anticipated. It's the best experience of our lives. That was one of the love of it. I gave her an extra syllable. I did. I didn't mean to do that. Those triplets and quads, by the way, got together for a reunion with the staff at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Well, First Lady Hillary Clinton unveiled the White House Christmas decorations today, and there's a touch of Maryland in the executive mansion. The first lady gave reporters a tour of the White House, including a look at the beautiful Christmas tree. Hanging on the tree are two ornaments made by children at Ryder Wood Elementary School in Baltimore County. RIDER Wood Kids were invited to make the ornaments because the school was selected as a blue ribbon school this year. The two ornaments chosen were made by second grader Caitlin Bray and fourth grader Becky Crockett. Now we hope to hear from Caitlin and Becky later this week. All right. For Marvin and everybody is wearing ties are not wearing ties. To look at the forecast, it's big changes coming this week. Big changes, extremely cold air in the northern central plains will have an impact on our weather later this week. 65 in downtown Boston with very, very mild air, 51 John San, 64 Ocean City, Atlantic City, 63 Salisbury, 6465. Down in Richmond with all the clouds and rain. Despite that, we still get up to 67 degrees. The normal high is 49 degrees. These temperatures are way out of line 51. The low 31 is are normal, normal, low west winds and 5 to 10 very light winds. And that will help to create a little fog overnight and during the morning hours tomorrow, our national radar will show precipitation that we had earlier today. Now off to our east northeast, a lot of rain over the extremely extreme northern edge of this, too, getting a little snow and sleet in Maine. Most of the rain out to our east, a little leftover drizzle in a few spots, some showers east of Florida. A new air precipitation, however, developing over the central states. Some of this is now beginning to mix and change to some sleet. Could be an interesting week weatherwise for us. Area of low pressure that move through the air. And now to our east. All the mild air is still on the East Coast. However, to our west, there is a frigid, very cold air mass this morning. All right. As it does, it'll start filtering in some colder air into our area. In the meantime, area of low pressure developing over southwestern portions of Arizona. We'll move across the country, bring up some nice warm air on top of this cold air. We're going to get an area. Precipitation is already starting to develop across the central portion of the United States. You can see there a lot of moisture coming in the southwest. We have a possibility here in Maryland Wednesday night and Thursday morning, if we have enough cold air in place, we could see some rain, sleet and or snow or a combination or either one of those Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Here's all the clouds and precipitation we had today. You see how it's cleared off. For the most part, we have a lot of low clouds left. But if you look west, a tremendous area of clouds yet to come into the area. So we're going to watch this area of low pressure that's expected to move pretty much out to the east. And we're going to be on the northern edge of a precipitation band. And as all this cold air starts to filter down, there will be an area of freezing precipitation developing out in the Midwest. So we'll have to watch it carefully over the next 24 hours to see whether, in fact, here in the Maryland area particularly, it's going be like a close line to our north, maybe just too cold and dry for anything. Wednesday night, Thursday morning, that's the shot right now, 55 a deep creek. Tomorrow is 63, Ocean City, 62, another mild day tomorrow. But temperatures are going to start heading down tomorrow night and they won't recover too much during the latter part of this week, a high of 62 for Baltimore. Another very, very warm day on tap, as you can see forecast then for tonight, just a lot of leftover clouds, some fog in some areas with if we have any clear skies, we see some patchy fog forming with generally light winds low 48. Tomorrow we will see some sun, not a whole lot. A cloudy, sunny mix more I think in the morning we'll see some more clouds and then some sun may break through during the afternoon. And the wires would, over a period of time would free. And by putting me in the box and take them out each year, we make them. And they sort of if they would get next to the the evergreens could go off a lot of heat. So you would not recommend those those older style, the bigger bulb lights. Correct. These little wind lights, the little tiny, which you see now are they're a much safer way to go after they don't give off much heat and that is less safer nowadays. Okay. Now, as far as plugging in several, how many can you plug into one circuit and how does that all work? Well, you can see people overloading and they 30 or 40 these year. I mean. Yeah, as long as the circuit breaker will trip if you overload the circuit and shouldn't be a problem. So that's. So you want to make sure those lights you're using are safe. What can you. Can you put these on the tree without a bulb? Is that a safe thing? No, that's not very safe at all because you've got a lot of electricity. Exactly right. And probably the string won't work either. Okay. So that would could sort of chip the circuit to keep the other lights from. It may do that. Okay. Now, as far as your tree is concerned, this is the little tree here. But I notice it's it's still it's pretty fresh. Sure. You would make sure that the tree bends like this and it doesn't, that's for sure. Right. So, I mean, some of these trees were cut months ago, right? Six, maybe eight weeks ago. So when you purchase the tree, you want to make sure you take the tree home and cut the bottom at least an inch and a half off the building. See that? We've sliced the bottom, the straight angle to get more of the tree to water. Water. Okay. And keep that filled up with water every day. As soon as you get it home, you want to cut it? Sure. Because it's healed over from the initial cut. That's what happens. So you keep the water in there. What about electric and water together? They obviously don't mix, that's for sure. You want to make sure that your plug is way far away from the base of the stand and that you don't have any sparks. And he carried on these the tree. Ruppersberger, a much more outwardly genial man than Hayden, takes over with some other things in mind. In his inauguration speech today. He said he wanted people to be able to go to a shopping mall at night without being afraid. That may be the first time in the entire history of grandiose inauguration speeches that shopping malls have been mentioned. But the reference is more clearly linked to the new executive's background as a law enforcement man and to the encroachment of urban problems into suburbia. Once the county and its shopping malls were seen as a refuge from all of the city's scruffy problems, gradually that notion is going away. Ruppersberger, a native of Baltimore City, knows the county's getting more urbanized all the time more business, more traffic, more schools, more people, more different kinds of people, and inevitably, more crime. That is certainly a logical request, but it's something she should have considered before she signed the lease.
