The strike at a General Motors parts plant in Ohio is expected to be felt in Baltimore this afternoon. Alex Demetric is standing by live at the GM plant on Browning Highway to explain Alex. Well, if ever there was a classic example of the domino theory, the strike that began last week at a General Motors parts plant in Ohio, is it? So far, 14 GM plants have had to shut down operations because they can't get parts. And this morning, workers here at the General Motors Assembly plant on Bruning Highway came into work knowing it is very likely their last day on the job. For the foreseeable future, it's expected the Baltimore plant will be forced to cease operations later this afternoon, idling 3100 workers, the latest victims of the strike. It's something that we had. We go through, you know, and it hurts sometimes.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006#t=141.97,261.0"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006/transcript/71305/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And sometimes it doesn't hurt, you know? But, you know, the pest comes and like, a plant goes out, it goes around, you know it, it materializes all over. And, sometimes they hit us hard. Sometimes they hit us all in all depends on how long they be out. They make the Chevy Astro Van and GMC Safari here what's been billed as being shipped out. But because large inventories of parts are not kept at the factory, the pieces to build more vans are expected to be used up today. And with two great plants under a strike in Ohio, it's not clear when more parts will be coming. As of today, only informal talks between the union and GM are being held, but nothing official until the strike is settled. The 3100 workers here will soon be joining 50,000 others at 14 other GM plants, forced to shut down and sit out the strike. And Kelly, we're told by workers here at the plant that the day shift will complete a full shift. They'll be getting out about 230, the evening shift will be going in, and we expect that they'll probably only be an hour or so before they are sent home. Alex, do you have any idea what the status is of some of the local suppliers here? Yeah, there are three companies that do supply parts, and for the immediate future, there will be no changes for them. They say they will continue their operations through the end of the week at least, building up their inventories, doing plant maintenance. But if this thing goes on into next week, I think layoffs at other facilities are a real likelihood. All right, Alex, I appreciate your report. That's Alex Dietrich reporting live. Faced with falling tax revenues, a slow economy and huge costs from our harsh winter, there is no chance of a tax cut this year. We cannot jeopardize the fiscal health of this state by having a premature tax cut. And perhaps most importantly, we can't cut basic services like education and law enforcement any further. We've been adding to them. Those are investments in our future. And I'm not about to cut our future. The governor says he will revisit this decision next year if the state's fiscal picture brightens. Governor's controversial handgun bill is up for a hearing today in Annapolis. The bill would allow Marylanders to buy only one gun a month, would stop store purchases of guns, would license gun buyers, and provide for criminal background checks and training. Governor Glendening says there's no need for anyone to own a dozen handguns. He says we're not only killing ourselves, but Maryland has now become a major exporter of guns. A program to get city guns off the street seems to be working. Since the beginning of the year, over 800 illegal guns have been seized as part of the disarm program. Now, city, state and federal leaders are focusing on the people who use the guns and crimes. They want violent repeat offenders to get the maximum sentence possible when they're convicted. But it's just gorgeous outside there. Lots of sunshine, light winds, and really is quite comfortable. We'll start with a picture, though, from the coast of Carolina. We got some film from down there, and they do, in fact, have some good winds going on down here. We also have some winds out on the Delmarva here, along our coastline, churning up the surf. And when we look at the satellite view, just a few minutes, you'll see there is a pretty good storm system that has worked its way up from off of the Florida coast now, off of the Carolina coast. And that's what's responsible for churning up those winds. There has been some coastal erosion, a little bit of coastal flooding. And, that's the sort of storm system that does that. Fortunately for us, it's, well, offshore are not going to impact on our weather. You look out to the east early this morning, beautiful sunrise from clear skies. In fact, that has already cleared occurred in Maryland. Now the clouds shield now offshore. And, this high pressure system going to dominate our weather picture for the next three days or so. It's just not going anywhere fast. And we got plenty of sunshine. And that's warming up to real nice conditions for this afternoon. We'll take the wider view satellite here. And there's that storm system that we saw. It originated down here, say between the tip of Florida and, Cuba and now has been trucking on up the coast, strengthening, giving pretty good winds along the coast. And we do have a gale warning or a small craft advisory still posted for our offshore location. It does seem to me you can get the idea that it's weakening a bit. Storm center will be drifting off to the northeast, so if you're down on the eastern shore, down in the coastal areas, it doesn't really look like it's going to be the problem here that we, were discussing yesterday. GM workers in Baltimore feel the impact of a strike affecting 60,000 people. The strike at a General Motors parts plant in Ohio has trickled down. And this evening, the GM plant on running highway shuts down. Alex Dietrich is standing by. Live at the plant with the latest. Alex. Well, Sally, this plant shutdown just one half hour ago when the nightshift was sent home early. The General Motors assembly plant here on Bruning Highway is now the 15th GM plant forced to shut down since a strike hit two parts factories in Ohio last week. Quitting time came earlier than usual at the General Motors Assembly plant on Bruning Highway, but it was not unexpected. Not one to strike in Ohio and shutting down GM plants around the country. You know, the pitch comes and like a plant goes out and goes around, you know it. It materializes all over. And sometimes they hit us hard and sometimes they hit us all and all depends on how long they be out, how long tickets will remain up at two break manufacturing plants in Ohio is the big question in Baltimore. And at 14 other GM factories striking over safety and job security. The action is rippling throughout the company, and worry over making ends meet is traveling with it. You can't get ready for it because whatever you save up, you're going to use. So you just get in the hole and you eventually lose things that you can work hard for because of the strike. But because GM plants do not carry a large inventory of parts, the factory here was forced to shut down its assembly line when parts for brakes ran out this afternoon. That means 3100 workers are on indefinite unpaid leave, although there will still be work for haulers and plant maintenance crews. So a lot of work to me, because they'll be ripping out a lot of things that, you know, normally would drag on, and I only do on weekends, so I'll be doing them during the week that give you a chance to catch up. It'll give me Saturdays off. Local suppliers like Mirada in Carroll County are still operating, building up their inventories. But if the shutdown stretches into next week, layoffs may begin hitting these factories as well. In a shutdown, time is literally money. How long do you think you'd be able to hold out here if they. This doesn't get a quick resolution. I have a mortgage payment. That's for how long? This shutdown last is, of course, the big unknown. About the only tip for workers they were given was, small mimeograph sheets this afternoon as they left saying, stay tuned to the news media to find out when you can come back to work. Sally. Alex, we're getting a pretty good idea of what this strike is costing employees. But what is it costing General Motors? Well, according to industry analysts, it's going to cost General Motors $250 million a week if the strike spreads to all of its assembly plants, as it looks as if it may very well do. However, GM appears to have positioned itself to weather a strike, maybe a lengthy one.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006#t=1834.76,1937.18"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006/transcript/71305/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It said they have an inventory of up to 80 days worth of trucks and cars that they can move out to dealers. Three adult daycare centers in Baltimore County are also facing shutdowns, and these would be permanent. The county is pulling back $540,000 used to operate centers in Dundalk, Catonsville and Townsend for 150 elderly clients. It's a real shocker for the clients and for their caregivers back home. The thought of these chairs at the adult daycare center in Towson being empty, the piano no longer making music. The checkers having made their last jump. Programs. I make friends with the people that come in to do the programs. And I won't miss that. I miss all my friends too. Cynthia suffered a stroke back in 1987. Her left side is paralyzed. Our hopes are we're going to put on a request for proposals, which will solicit any private vendors that come in and hopefully they'll be interested in coming in and operating the centers without government help. The center would cost Cynthia and John $57 a day. Could you come up with $57 a day for you to go to the center? I don't see how you know it isn't working. I'm primarily dependent on Social Security. And, that would be, a problem. Perhaps the primary effect and benefit of this for Cynthia is social contact with other people. It's extremely difficult to get her out of the house and have someone here. So I think the social contact is means most to us. Cynthia, how important do you feel these programs are for folks just like you? Very important. It's nice for the nice for my husband to do it. Lots of free time to do things. He's got a whole day to do. Things he wants to do. You know, at the center. And that's a big worry about me. Baltimore County social workers are contacting the clients and the caregivers to hopefully help them find alternative daycare, just in case. This privatization plan is not successful. And if the center's closed, what happens to the employees? How many would be laid off? Well, in addition to 150 clients who would lose those services, there are 48 workers who work in the three plants in Towson and Dundalk and Kadence Hill, and that includes ten of the van drivers, because they would no longer be necessary to drive the seniors to and from. Last September, we told you about a Hartford County family racially harassed at their home in Aberdeen. Well, tonight, Pat Warren reports that police have arrested a suspect who is just 14 years old. I was really surprised because it has been a long time since September, but I was also pleased because it meant that they were really trying. Karen Johnson says she's lost the easy comfort of living on Lark Lane since she came outside one day and found this written on her car. Police say this, and a note full of racial slurs are the work of a 14 year old boy with my mom. She was a little scared with me. It just made me mad. That was the only thing. And to know that, of course they're still ignorant people out there, but young people, it's just that it was a break in and theft here at Carson Run Baptist Church that finally gave investigators the proof they needed to arrest the boy. What led to the arrest was a burglary that happened at the Carson's Run Baptist Church. Detectives working that case learned that the suspect in that case may also be related to the incident that we had on Lark Drive in Aberdeen. It's really sad. A nine year old was also arrested in connection with the church burglary, and police are investigating the possibility that someone other than the 14 year old was involved in the racial harassment incident. And it reveals that women under 30 are a prime target. Here's Kelly Lynn with this Healthwatch report. What's it about? Well, Richard, one out of every ten women under 30 are likely to abuse alcohol. And if you didn't graduate from college, you're also more at risk of becoming. An alcoholic. These results are pretty surprising. They show how socioeconomic factors play into alcoholism and recovery. 42 year old Michelle Breeden hopes this is the last time she'll have to go through detox. City, state and federal leaders want violent repeat offenders to get the maximum sentence when they're convicted. Tonight at six on Eyewitness News stands on as we'll talk to people in one community who are working very hard to get these guns off their streets. And gun control was the hot topic in Annapolis today. Statehouse reporter Suzanne Collins is joining us live now from the Capitol. And Suzanne, the governor, we understand, is behind the bill that would limit just how many handguns people can buy. Correct. That's right. Richard. He would limit it to one per month for each person. Also, it regulates second hand sales. In other words, you buy it at the gun shop that's regulated. But if you resell it, that isn't. And he wants to regulate that. The governor believes a lot of guns get into the hands of felons that way. And lastly, the most controversial provision is licensing people who have handguns. That involves a criminal background check, fingerprinting and also a required safety course.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006#t=2846.85,2948.23"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006/transcript/71305/annotation/29","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Now, ironically, two mothers who lost children to handgun violence testified today one for one against one mother son was murdered by another teen and the other one's daughter committed suicide. I remember that knock at the door at 330 in the morning. I remember that. The shock, the pain. It's personal. It's very personal. That's my son. But not only is it personal. I believe in the bill. My only child had committed suicide with a handgun. And I know whenever someone suffers that type of loss, they go to an extreme and they want to eliminate the cause. I feel that, it's more important for me to hang on to my rights as an American citizen to defend myself. Here. You got a rap sheet like that? The Senate committee that has killed gun control bills in the past now supports at least some of the governor's bills. Hundreds of people signed up to testify or just crowded into the hall today outside the hearing room. Many of them with personal stories to tell. The governor told me today he felt a good, strong feeling would emerge from this session for him to sign. Richard and Virginia passed a law earlier that limits the number of handguns that people can buy each month. Does that have any effect on Maryland? Well, the governor claims it has. He says an FBI report just came out, and he says that Maryland has now become the place that a lot of felons are getting guns because they can get them in great numbers. He says it shows that their crimes being committed from here to New York, where guns from Maryland are being used. So he has mentioned that in a big way today, as you might imagine. All right, Suzanne.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006#t=2948.83,3046.19"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006/transcript/71305/annotation/30","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Thanks, Suzanne. Alec, in tonight's Healthwatch Gibson's Pain, started Saturday while he was on an airplane flying to New York to work on his new movie. Once at his hotel, the pain became so severe that he was rushed to New York, a New York hospital. The filming of Gibson's new movie, Ransom, is delayed for two weeks while the star recovers. He's expected to attend next week's Academy Awards. Also in Healthwatch. If you've ever had a good friend, you know how rewarding friendships can be when you're growing up. Friends are really important, but it's not only youngsters who need a pal. What you may not know is friendships can also be good for your health. Studies show that those without friends can triple their risk of premature death from illnesses like cancer and heart disease, and people should have at least one person in their life that they can trust and depend on outside of the family. It's interesting. The study talked about the differences between the sexes, about women and women, friends and men in math. Yeah, interestingly enough, men did not seem to do as well on this test as the women did. So it seems that men need to go out and try to get a few more friends. Okay, now that Richard. Thanks. There are only three lanes of traffic, and all too often during the rush hours, it backs up. The problem is simple the solution isn't. Here is what the state is going to do about it. It's already bad during rush hour. What? We're still stacked up on the west side out a little bit of only bright sun glare of factor, keeping the speed slope in the middle of the beltway currently tied up as you make your way through Pikesville. I dread it. It's very slow. I drive halfway around the beltway each day, morning and evening, and I find it a miserable experience. Miserable now because every day about a dozen additional cars use this road. Over time, that means that this road is too crowded. Tonight, thousands of these barrels are going out into the lanes in order to speed you up. The grass median is going to be taken away in its place. An additional lane each way. The area affected is the busiest part of the beltway. These four miles are also among the narrowest. So right about now, this is all beginning to sound like a great big hassle to you, isn't it? Well, you're right, but take heart. If you drive during the day, it won't be as bad. But if you drive at night, be prepared for traffic on the interstate to come to a complete standstill. I may stay and work an extra hour to avoid it. Well, that's true, but, we're all good. Things must come some bad, and you're going to have to endure the bad in order to get good. At all times during the day, all three lanes each way will be open, but then at nighttime it will go down to one lane from 7 to 10. And if they need it, it'll go down just to I mean, I'm sorry, only one lane. We blocked off from 7 to 10, but then if they need to two lanes we blocked off after 10:00 into the early morning hours. Sally okay. Mike, how long is this going to take? Well, it's going to seem like forever. It's going to take two and a half years. Oh, last Friday was interesting, Sally. The US government reported that 705,000 new jobs were created in the U.S. in the month of February. To put that in perspective, that's as if the entire city of San Francisco was suddenly hired and the market didn't take that news well, because they think a lot of people are out in the marketplace. Some have jobs, they have money. Therefore the fed doesn't need to cut interest rates anymore like they've been doing since last January. And they were afraid it's going to hurt the price on their stocks. So a good sized group of investors all bolted for the door on Friday and drove stocks down 171 points. Okay. Yesterday they rebounded over 110 points. And then today at one point they were down almost 100 points. But what was the final closing. Oh well it might end up slightly under three points. So today's another roller coaster. Yesterday a lot of folks ran out the door on Friday who took a look around and decided maybe the news isn't as bad as they originally thought. And there was some bargains out there. Some companies that were currently trading at a price lower than usual, so they picked up some bargain lows. So we'll start see recovery again today. Okay. If you currently own stock and and all of this makes you sick to your stomach, what do you suggest we do? Well couple things. First of all, you need to go back to how long are you away from your objective? If you are relative, a young person, you own good investments and you have a fairly long timeline before you're going to actually need the money that you have tied up in the markets. Another reason for you to do anything just sit on your hands and maybe pick up some bargains, like the bargain shoppers yesterday.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006#t=4296.72,4379.79"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006/transcript/71305/annotation/43","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Or maybe if you have a 401 K plan at work and you're 30 years old, we've got 37 years to between now when you retire. Bottom line is it's going to be volatile, but the market is for the long term investor. Don't react to everything that you see. Good companies long timeline to buy and watch it and go in and pick up some sales. Hey, listen to that Richard. What should we be planning to do with our garden right now? You know, I was outside today. It's very, very wet still. What? What should we start doing? Well, right now you need to determine what you need to recover from what you lost in the harsh winter. Okay, a lot of people have that problem. If you've lost shrubs or things like that, replace them. Okay. And a lot of shrubs got broken from the heavy snow. And especially if you live near the road, you know, so, yeah. Wind damage. Okay, so now is the time to replace them. I mean. You can plant that stuff now. Except you're saying, right, like evergreen trees, shrubs and things you can plant right now. Right, right. As long as grass not frozen, I mean. Well, as long as we don't have any more blizzards. Okay. Come right. Right now's a good time. Any of your shrubs? We're starting to get, some of your bulbs. Some of your your spring perennials coming in, any of your old bulbs that, you want to plant now for some summer blooms. Now's the time. You want to do them. Okay, now, as far as preparing the garden, what should you do? Assess your soil. I would assume the first right need that you need. If you're planning a new shrub, you need to determine what kind of soil you have. Most of the soil in this area is fairly clear. What you need to you need to loosen it off. With, with a good mixture of a top soil, some peat moss, which is this right here, mix in some peat moss with, with some, peat moss with some topsoil and vermiculite and some and some water.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006#t=4460.49,4550.36"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006/transcript/71305/annotation/45","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Anything to loosen up that hard clay soil just to give your roots a chance to grow. Most plants do not like to sit in water that'll rot the roots and need some. That's really not. It needs the drainage. That's one of the points of having a nice loose soil. Now what about vegetables? This time of year people talk about their early cool weather vegetables. Can you start those outside now and put those, some of your cool crop vegetables? You can. Now is actually the time that you want to start getting your tomato seeds. If you're starting seeding, get them in the ground, you know, now in the next couple of weeks, you have some nice tomatoes, like the first week in May is a pretty frost free date for it for the prior. So you get them started indoors and right start them right. Like I'm sure these some other questions going to ask. What if if it gets really cold after you've done some plant it gets really, really cold. How will that affect some of these plants that we have here. You've you've got Pansy some other plants here. Right. They get super cold again when they reduce them. If, if it's a very frost for a long period of time, they may if it's just a quick frost overnight, probably not. What we have here is pretty hardy. Most of the perennials and bulbs that you're planning now are fairly hardy, though. Last year evergreens are fine all year, so these are the plants that are available now that are pretty hardy. The correct. You're not going to be putting any annuals out now. You know you got a couple more weeks next two three weeks for that. So warm up a little bit correct Mike thank you.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006#t=4550.78,4628.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006/transcript/71305/annotation/46","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You're welcome. Anyway, Orioles lost today in Melbourne, Florida. Three to nothing was the final score. Chris Hammond's threw four innings of two hit ball, struck out two for the Marlins. Orioles playing without Palmeiro, Anderson and Ripken as well as Alomar, shut out today three to nothing by the Marlins. And with less than three weeks to go now until Opening Day. So much attention has been focused on the Orioles all star infield, led by Robbie Alomar, arguably the best second baseman in all of Major League Baseball, has been trying hard this spring not only to play some good ball, but also to fit in with his new mates on the ice.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006#t=4752.74,4873.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136415/file/253006/transcript/71305/annotation/48","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I feel pretty good. Alomar on the Orioles. Three to nothing losers this afternoon up in Melbourne, Florida. Also this afternoon, we got one of those events where a real live guy off the street kind of person gets a shot at major league money for doing some kind of sports thing. Like the guy, remember the Super Bowl who had a one shot at a field goal from 30 yards out? And if they made it, they were going to give him a million bucks. This is a variation on that now well-worn theme. Stock car driver Bill Elliott drove through a course in a miniature Ford Thunderbird down in Atlanta, drove hard, tried for a good time, and then some guy who they picked at random got to try to beat Elliott's time while driving an identical miniature T-Bird. If he beats the time all right, they give him the million bucks and the guy was doing great. His split time was faster than Elliott's. I think it's a few yards from the finish line. He's going to win $1 million. Oh, you big dummy. Spun it out all right. But they gave a new car anyway just so they wouldn't go away mad. And they all lived happily ever after down in Atlanta. She was. It was a happy ending. So the crowd sang. What are they singing? I tell the words. Sunday 56. Down to 40. Sally. Which? All right. Bob. Finally tonight when we think of antiques, we think of things very old. But George Baumann has seen antiques that aren't very old at all, and he saw them in the only museum of its kind here in Maryland by George. System source in Hunt Valley is a multifaceted computer firm born, nurtured and grown by the explosive onslaught of computers in our ideal location for the first and only computer museum in Maryland. Home of the youngest antiques there are. It was founded by System Source co-owner Bob Roswell, who finds the development of computer, the mistakes and triumphs first made, as do thousands of others. Here you'll see the first personal computers, including one that Bill gates modified on his road to billions. This is a 1970s modem. This is a modern modem. It is 250 times faster than this. This was the first portable computer. You'd need a magnifying glass to read the screen. The development of computers and their efficiency grew by quantum leaps from the 60s to the 90s. Basically, since 1960, every year you've been able to get 25% more power for the dollar every year. And that's just continued. People have said if cars advanced like computers, you could now buy a Rolls Royce for $0.50 and it would get 5000 miles to the gallon. This little machine. A mechanical calculator could probably be called the grandfather of computers. The operator, interestingly enough, of the calculator was called a computer.
