Think of the movies, think of the sports, but don't think about paying for 18 months. See you at Lusk. It's news with P\u0026G World Tonight at 630. It's the snow show with the blizzard King's Richard Sher and Marty Bass. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Snow Show. Our 17th award winning year of being dubbed the Blizzard King. This thing still doesn't work. 17 years later. I can hear it, I. Jim, it's a little low, man. We gotta pump it up. Good morning everybody. I'm Richard, this is Marty, and, you know it's snowing out there. No kidding, I swear. All right, folks, I'm going to make your life very. I'm going to make your life so easy. It's I'm going to go right to the bottom line. We're getting a major winter weather event. It's a Sunday. Park it, watch TV, listen to radio, read a book, talk to your wife, talk to your husband and play a big deal with your kids. Burn up the long distance lines. Log in to your computer. Go to an online service if you can possibly get through and just enjoy the day. Ain't nothing going to happen fast. Is nobody going anywhere today or tomorrow? I have just cut through all of it and given you the bottom line. We're in the midst of a major winter weather event and they're calling it like a blizzard, right? This is going to be oh, this is going to be a flat out blizzard.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990#t=0.5,100.77"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990/transcript/71330/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It will fit all the definitions of Blizzard we already have. I'm going to say six seven inches on the ground. The best weather graphic I can give you is this advice. Look out your window and here's a radar view of what is happening out of your window. We are looking at a tremendous amount of snow and believe it or not, we are, we're not even into the thick of this deal yet. It really looks like by tonight, the big brunt of the storm is going to be hitting us. Frankly, we're more concerned about the weather tonight than we are between now. And let's say 4:00. We know it's snowing, but the big, heavy snow is down to the south. Let's take a look at the AccuWeather forecast for the day. Right now it is in the low 20s. Heavy snow, increasing wind, drifting snow. That's going to be a huge problem. I have 20 degrees. Look whether it's seven eight, whether it's excuse me, but blizzards always tend to choke me up. Whether it's seven inches of snow in Bel Air, whether it's eight inches of snow, whether it's four inches of snow in Crofton, totals for individual areas right now are essentially irrelevant. We're going to be looking at a lot of snow at a minimum of close to two feet in the city, and possibly more outside of the Beltway before this is over with sometime tomorrow afternoon. A high of 20 today. Once again tonight, the big problem we actually use the word blizzard. And trust me when I tell you I'm being very serious here. The word blizzard is not used lightly. You cannot in good conscience on a broadcast use this word unless you get the definitions of whiteout. A certain percentage of snow falling per hour.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990#t=101.08,188.91"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990/transcript/71330/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"It is going to be cold and overnight low of 16 tomorrow. Snow ending when? That's a real darn good question. We're staying right now for conversation purposes. Accumulations 1 to 2ft. Now this is in the city. This is not north and west. This is not north and east. And actually south is going to have more problems, I truly believe, than anywhere else. Just for a benchmark, if you will. We're saying in the city, a foot plus closer to two feet. Drifting will continue. Tomorrow's winds will not diminish. I have 26 and overnight low of 18 degrees. It's just a major weather, one winter weather event. But fortunately, hey, let's put it in perspective. It's Sunday. We'll be back with more weather, which we want everybody to know that we're going to be around here for a little bit. We know that, you didn't expect us, but, from time to time when there's a blizzard or a bad storm, Marty and I, we wake up at the same time, and, we have coffee together, and then we come and join some of you. Now, our telephone number here in the newsroom don't inundate us, because what we do want to speak to some of you at some point. And, so if you're around in your communities, you might want to call our newsroom. Who knows what you want to do? We got lots of folks out to keep you entertained and, keep you warm and abreast of what's happening in the storm. Ron Matz, is that you, Ron? Under that knit cap, young man? Yes, it is. Richard. Driving out here with photographers Frank Branco and Joe Smith. Driving conditions, needless to say, are not very good. They're going to get worse. I wouldn't call it whiteout conditions yet, but we're getting darn close to it. As you know, the the plows have been the the plows have been out. We were, in fact, followed a convoy out here, on our way over along the Beltway. But, and you're gonna hear this phrase over and over again, not only for me, but everybody else this morning, as Marty said, park it. If you don't have anywhere to go, please, please stay inside. I'm going to ask photographer Frank Barranco to follow me a little bit to get a look at, Bel Air Road. And we've got a little bit of, traffic. Not too much, people, heating, the, our cautionary notes to stay inside, if you possibly can. However, there are some people. Let's go talk to them who have been out in. This mess. John, come on over here. Let me talk to John first. John, you and I, we're doing great. How are you doing? All right. You work for whom? Smith baking company. Tell me about you. You've been out long drives. Yeah, I've been driving tractor trailer for them, and, I've been out to sea for Delaware and, Salisbury, Maryland. And then roads are really bad down there. Up here. It's not too bad. He had two solid trucks out, but down there, you're like you're feeling for the road down there, you know? Why are you out? I'm, work for my full time job as a Baltimore County public schools. I'm a schoolteacher. And why? I'm out to get coffee, donuts. A little bit of snow is not going to stop doing the morning routine on Sunday morning, but, they're driving is very treacherous. I have snow tires on the front of the car, so I don't feel too bad about it. But one thing I want to recommend if you have to go out, make sure you clean your windows and especially your headlights into your tail lights. I mean, most people just take it to the windows and you need to make sure you do your lights too, so people can see you. So you don't have any problems with that at all. Very good point. Thanks, Howard. Good luck. All right. See you. Okay. That's some very good advice from a couple of guys. Have been on the road a long while. At least one guy, John, has been on the road a long, long time. If you if you don't have to go out and stay inside. Rich. Marty, back to you. Hey, Roger. Hey. We're getting lots of calls about those orange gloves, Ron. And, I want to know where they got them. Let's get those things right. Surplus for the area. Go. 599. There you go, man. Beat it. In a moment, you're going to be talking to a state highway official, right? Susan, I'm just telling you up front, and I have a four wheel drive vehicle I got to explore. Okay? I am most concerned about getting in here tomorrow morning. This is not going to be a drivable snow right now. We're the very first quarter of this weather event. Understand me when I'm telling you this. Let me try and put this into perspective here that we're in the first quarter of this weather event. 12 hours from now, you are driving nowhere. Yeah. Welcome to our special coverage of the, Blizzard of 96. We delighted to have you with us. And, we'd like to know how things are out there on the highways and byways. We know it's not pleasant. Well, state highway crews, we have about 2000 employees out there right now with 1500 pieces of equipment crying. All our major state routes, interstate routes, keeping our state highways clear. They're trying to keep ahead of the storm. And and like Marty was saying, it's just going to keep on coming down and we're just going to keep on plowing. Do you is there? Bye bye. Compiling a list of cancellations. But you should assume that just about everything out there is canceled. I mean, there's really no need for that. The runways are being filled out with snow faster than they can get the snow off their, trying with the ongoing efforts to get the snow off. Carol is the spokesperson with BWI and Carol, our frosty spokesperson here, as you can see, has been a trooper. You stood out here with us all morning. Thank you. Now, tell us a little about what's going on out here, because this is really, at a standstill. Yeah, this is, this is a real bad, storm here today. And, as you said earlier, just about all of the airlines, with the exception of southwest, trying to get a couple of flights out now before it gets any worse. The runways at this time are still closed, and they're, endeavoring to open them, if they can. But with the predictions of this heavy snow going from 20 to 30, it's going to be difficult. Maven of Baltimore. Better than they were. No good. Oh, man. Thank you. Hey, let's talk a little weather here real quick. 26 degrees right now here in Baltimore, I want you to take a look at some temperatures around the area right now. I mean, no, I mean, no question, I mean 16. Wow. They reported a a north of the Beltway. This just a downtown in on our TV hill temperature, by the way. And I think I have the monitors next to a heater in 18 a DC 20 Salisbury 13, in Hagerstown, Harrisburg, southern PA 15 degrees in Wilmington, 71 climate control degrees in those casinos in Atlantic City, you walk out on the boardwalk 23 degrees, and 23 down the ocean. We're in the middle of middle of a major winter weather event. We're expecting before it's over with a couple feet of snow in the area. Let's just be honest about it right now. There's enough snow on the ground. And on a regular day, everything would be shutting up tight as a drum. We already have. We're getting reports of 80in down in D.C.. Officially four in Baltimore. But I know in my house we had at least seven gloves. They all Maryland, nine inches of snow, timber ville, Virginia, 12in of snow.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990#t=1044.64,1139.35"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990/transcript/71330/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Luray caverns, ten inches of snow. Anyway, our coverage is continuing here in the blizzard of 1996. On this, what day is this? The sixth Sunday. The seventh. 7th of January, 1996. We've got Ron Matt standing by live right now at the, at the muffin department. Donuts. One of those donut holes. Yeah. Well, listen, you may have, that, healthy stuff. The salmon on the bagels. Look what I got him. Oh, man. You know, the looks like it looks like they've been wiped out. Well, I'm just about very steady, very steady flow of people here. We're live at the, Dunkin Donuts on a Bel Air road in the Patty Hill Plaza. We're on the border of Fullerton and Parkville, I'm told. So I just want to make that clear. Melissa, I've been working behind the counter. Mili, come here just to say. How are you doing? I'm fine. Yeah, yeah. What time do you get in this morning? About 26. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. My boss picked me up. All right. It's good like that. Yeah, I bet he is. Okay, Emily, thanks a lot. I want to bring Bill over here for a second. Bill just got here. Bill? Where did you. You drove down from where? Perry hall. All right. How was. How was the drive? Oh, my bad, not bad. Snow covered visibility's. Terrible. Not too bad. I only drove about ten minutes, so wasn't that. Well. Well, why don't you come out this morning? Well, the reason I'm here is because my wife started watching your TV show, and she says I need some donuts.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990#t=2335.97,2424.38"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990/transcript/71330/annotation/28","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Like I said, it's either now or never. Like that hat here on stand. We love the hat. Okay, Bill. Take care. Now, I gotta bring in another gentleman here. Get Bill another dozen. Ron. All right. This guy, this guy is probably one of the most important people in all of Baltimore today. And, let's take a look at, his attire, didn't he? Boot camp, Baltimore county boots, this is George. He's a snow plow driver. Just pulled in. Tell me about it, buddy. We've been out since 9:00 this morning doing everything we can do. They don't look too bad. Did it? No you didn't I tell you right now Bel Air Road doesn't look too bad. I'm not telling people to get out in it again if you don't have any where to go stay there. But oh what's a storm look like to you? It looks like you've been around a little while. It's. It's real dry. And it's it's, you know, it keeps blowing back. Soon as you push it, it blows right back over you, you know, it's dry. Yeah. It's a dry snow. Okay. Where are you plowing exactly? Where? I'm all down around Franklin Square hospital, King Avenue, now. Ridge road, Berry road, all through there. Where do you go from here? Right here to Firehouse Prairie Road. I think this is the order of the main course is coming in the afternoon, so please, please stay at home. All right. See you later. Why don't we get Don in here so I can get back to Annabel? Yeah. All right. Well, we may have to. Maybe we'll, maybe we'll call the cause of Scott here shortly. Hey, listen, it's 16 degrees right now. Once again, a major snowstorm. In the region. Not just here, but I mean, all up and down East coast all the way to, to, South Carolina, if you will. At any one of those guys, I was just getting ready to go back and take a look at that. Said some updated weather around the area. We are seeing some significant snowfalls, anywhere from 5 to 8in, with blowing and drifting now into a couple of feet, before it's over. Said and done with. We could be looking at a couple of feet, if not more, just for a parameter, if you will. A benchmark we're seeing in the city wanted to be that in the city. So over 30in in central Maryland. I mean, I was kind of looking forward to the snow. I love the snow. And. But I look forward to your snow show, and. Well, we appreciate that. Gloria. You know what's interesting about this snow show? Gloria, we have no idea what's going to happen. That's what I love. How did you hear about it? Well, you know, you've been hearing about it from the weather. And, of course, Marty, I always listen to Marty every morning getting me to work for 20 years. We think we've had a long time in so very, very few of us. Then when we had the morning show was essentially about a 5 or 6 person operation. Mr. Dorsey is in the control room with us this morning right from the morning show, and we appreciate everybody that watches. We really, honestly do, 16 degrees. Look at that, Gloria. I said I'd go stir crazy. Okay. Don't panic. But an hour after you left, a moving van pulled into your driveway. Well, where? As soon as are you on the 41st Street Bridge? All right, Vic, if you're right, Vic Carter, if you are watching, Suzanne is now demonstrating for you the Eyewitness News live shot from the 41st Street Bridge. It's been a tradition for years. Don't you don't you don't you don't you think we should get back out there later? We're going to. Yeah. All right. Thank you very much. I know what to do. If you want to take a look at the J-f. Lenny, can you pan over to it? We haven't seen. Oh, there is a car every minute or so. So people still are out trying to drive a one. One minute ago, I saw a snowplow go by. So apparently they have cleared like one lane across on the southbound side, but it's pretty rough going out there. I just drove in a little while ago and it was very difficult, especially on the ramps, to get to the main road. The 41st Street Bridge is a great indication. Gives you one where you could pan over to your left a little bit. Yeah, to even go to the bridge. Yeah. To the bridge. Yeah. Wow. Wow. Man alive looks like a sea of white. That is truly amazing. But, Suze, it just honestly doesn't matter. Let's check it out. We're in for no one. Oh, you can't see where the curve is. Let me tell you that. Be careful. Suzanne. If you know what I know, it's really just pavement. It's not slippery. No ice at all. It's very dry. So we haven't had much of a problem with ice. It's mostly snow. And I found this morning there's a lot of traction for your car. But, you know, Sue's. You brought up a great point. We're playing a sound effect behind you, by the way. That is not the. It was out here. Now, later on, the wind is going to howl. And you saw how powdery that snow was, right? This is drifting stuff. Suzanne, let me tell you about something that I did experience. I come down from near the Pennsylvania line and the blowing had already begun and drifting. And it's kind of frightening because on those country roads, you can't see where the road is. There's an embankment on either side and maybe a different rise, but other than that, you almost have to guess. And that's quite scary because you could go off to the side not knowing where the road is. A matter of fact, I saw one poor fellow whose, pickup truck had run off the side of 83, and he kept revving it, trying to get back up the hill. So it fooled you, doesn't it, though, then? It does. It really does. Right. By this afternoon, this storm is going to be really winding up big time. And, I really think there will be some, some serious substance to be discussed by later on this afternoon. I mean, if you flip over, if you happen to have the TV on, because I really think by later on today we're really going to be talking some once again, some major substance here instead of just, hey, it's a beautiful Sunday morning and some snow and we're getting ready to gas on golf and big time.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990#t=3046.57,3134.02"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990/transcript/71330/annotation/36","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"All right, Dick Galpin, you're on the line with us from Columbia, Maryland. This is my husband's pocket change. Each night he empties his pockets. I guess he learned that in the service and puts the money here. Then I add it to mine. Looks like spare change to my husband, but I turn it into over $1,000 with the lick of a stamp. How? With dollar a week life insurance from veterans life money, I easily round up and change for my husband and me. It's our extra safety net to protect each other and help make sure we won't be a burden to our children. Besides, it's so simple. I called, told them my husband was a vet, and they sent me the information. She's right. It is simple and it is just a dollar a week. You qualify for this rate if you were in the service. Any branch, including the reserves, wartime, peacetime, stateside or overseas. Spouses, widows and children qualify too. When you call this number, you'll get free information that shows the exact amount of term life insurance you can get for a dollar a week, and how much more you can apply for if you choose to spend up to $7 a week. The line's so busy. Nine minutes till ten. It is 16 degrees. Got it. Knowing the area, let's take a look at the AccuWeather, chief's radar for just a second. We got a tremendous amount of snow falling in the area, and it's not going to be over in total anytime soon. We're looking for actually stronger weather in the region later on tonight. All right. We've got, Baltimore City Police Commissioner Tom Frazier who's on the line right now. Our live Eyewitness News line commissioner. Good morning sir. Good morning. How are you? We're fine. Tell us that everything is well, and, your guys are out there, and we know we see the cars running around, so we feel the city's in pretty good shape. We are in good shape. We, have acquired over the last couple of years dozens of wheel drives, change for all the patrol cars. They're chained up and will, have an overlap of, tactical officers. And tonight, working from six at night till six in the morning and, we're, real confident that things are in good shape.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990#t=6637.11,6739.12"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136401/file/252990/transcript/71330/annotation/75","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"You know, you know, you know, you always think about you never really think about the mechanics, the work for the police department to keep these vehicles going, that they have to deal with the tire, snow tires and chains and whatnot. How many people are on your mechanical staff? You know, conversationally speaking. I'm sorry I missed your question. Conversationally speaking, how many people are in your maintenance? Department there? They should get a big round of applause for keeping these cars on the street all the time. I love your, your applause machine there. Yeah. They really should. And today, because of the difficulty in getting around, those are public works employees. There are, substations of of maintenance facilities throughout the city. They have all come back to work to get the vehicles chained up and and keep them, running smoothly for us. And, that's that's the reason that we're able to be out in, as much force as we are. You know, Marty and I were working at Blizzard back in 78, 79, 79. The city was virtually paralyzed and the police had trouble getting around the area. Remember that Police Commissioner Pomerleau was was there, patrolling on horseback? Yes. You know, I've heard that legend. I'm. I'm a poor horseman. So. So we bought several dozen four wheel drives instead. Hey. You're smart. I'm just out of curiosity. Once again, I don't you don't you don't have to give us an exact number here. How many vehicles do you all have in the department? A little over 900. That's a staggering. That is unbelievable. That you can. That must cost a ton. Imagine what your own personal car cost. That's 900 oil changes every 3000 miles. Well, they they, they didn't look good. And, over the last year, we just got 162, I believe, new Crown Victorias in. We put 140 caprices on the street last year. So the bulk of the patrol, free to fleet, is virtually brand new, and we should on them anticipate any problems at all with, coverage on the city today or tomorrow or the next day? You know what? I was just thinking? I was listening to do a little free associating. I just was imagining Western Maryland and imagine a state trooper on patrol out on some of those back roads now slugging his way through this snow. This is a tough job on a daily basis with good weather, right? It only gets more difficult in this weather big time. It's tough. I got a friend that's an Alaska state trooper, and frankly, he rides the snow machines. No kidding. That's that's what, that's about what you have to do when it when it gets that bad, to get from place to place. And, that's how they patrol in the rural areas. All right, Commissioner Frazier, thanks a lot, buddy, for being with us. We see that mBTA bus down on South Charles in front of the Cross Street market. One of your patrol cars was down there, too. Absolutely. See you again. All righty. Bye bye. I was down at the most wonderful event at police headquarters a couple of weeks ago. The commissioner was there. They have a choir. When he came in, he he, he said we really need to get back into the community. You know, most of the boys closed police boys clubs had been had been shut down. The buddy program was hanging on by its fingernails. Some extremely devoted cops, administrators keeping it alive with virtually no budget. Mr. Frazier came in and said, now we get that we can get better press out of sending a good choir around or having a buddies program than we can cleaning up an entire neighborhood. It's very important. He really believes it's very important to get back into the community on a on literally a hand holding basis, like, hey, we're all in this together and we're here. And they had the choir perform and they they surprised him with new uniforms and the families were there. It was a really, really special night. It was really cool. I won't give it away, but I'm working on a special report for January or February. That's that will show that a police person who really has gotten involved back into the community, it's an amazing story. But I tell you what we're going to do right now. We're going to go back to Suzanne Collins. She's sort of roaming around and Susie's at the, giant rotunda. That's right. Thank you so much. You know, it's funny, but this weather does bring it out in people. They all come out to help each other. Just interestingly enough. Frank. Is that right? Frank and his wife are having a party today. Kind of a bad day to plan a party. Are you still going to hold this party? I see you have a big deli platter there. You have no intention of backing away at this point. The plans have been going on for several days.
