Mean you yesterday didn't get any better. It's better this morning than yesterday. There's no doubt about that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, yesterday didn't get any better at all. The good news is that nothing happened overnight. Nothing's going to happen today. The bad news is a lot of school systems are closed and other things. Well, yeah. Yeah. Well, that's. That's. That's the bad news. Also speaking from a parenting end. You're bad. The bad news speaking for this And there's the heads. Just keep on coming. We got some business take care of right off the bat. Why don't you go for it? I'm going to go ahead and take care of some business over here if the graphics are ready. Gary, let's show people what is close today. These following school systems have decided already not to open and run. The county schools have closed. Central offices will open for two hours late. Baltimore City schools are closed. Karoline County schools are closed. Carroll County schools closed. Central offices will open at ten. Grace and St Peter's School In the city is closed. Howard County schools are closed again. All right. Very good. Very good. Very good indeed. Yeah. Let's go ahead and take care of that right off the get go. Yep. And we'll be doing it many times over. All right. Now let's talk about some problems that come under my purview this morning. The weather. Well, and you know, listen, we're going to discuss this at the end of this break even and more more in depth for this Valentine's weekend. And we may have some problems around here this day. We've got a break in the action. Take a look at forecasters, jump on into, I say, 17 degrees right now on TV Hill. Mostly cloudy skies this day. And that's if there's no catch to today's forecast. Mostly cloudy, breezy and chilly. We're going to go for a high of 26 degrees. Now, tonight we get back into problems. Here comes another storm, snow and injure two during the overnight and we'll do some accumulations and then sleet and freezing rain may mix in by dawn overnight, a low of 22 degrees. And tomorrow the beat goes on. Cloudy ice or snow changing to ice. Looks like we'll have another event with a high of 30 degrees. And at the end of the story, that's just the end of this current graphics presentation. Looks like Saturday we're going to get nailed again. 18 on DC, 17 here in Baltimore, 12 and Harrisburg 19 as you can tell how far this cold air has pushed down south. I mean, for the past couple of days, we've had a real distinct line where Salisbury, Ocean City, Easton, Salisbury and Ocean City have been, in some cases 20, 25 degrees warmer than here in the metro area. Look now Salisbury this morning, 19 degrees, 17 in Ocean City, 14 degrees.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920#t=98.98,194.89"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920/transcript/71106/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And western Maryland, Cumberland this morning. Okay, here's the East Coast satellite photo. Not a whole lot of shaking going on. Actually, a big, strong area of high pressure right up over the Great Lakes is essentially forced the stationary front that is allowing these impulses to move our way. It's essentially forced that way down to the south. So all we're going to be dealing with is the northern extent of its cloud shield. But just understand that this stationary front is going away. We're back and forth and all of a sudden, boom, right here it comes. And here comes an impulse running right along it. And then once again, we're going to get nailed on Saturday. And there are some real indications that we're going to have some problems here, certainly this time tomorrow morning. All right. We'll go ahead discuss this again many times throughout the next 90 minutes. Let's go ahead and throw it back to Don. Thank you. And if you're worried about the way to work already, we're going to take care of you right now. Here's Chuck Whitaker from the traffic team in a little early. And how's it look, Chuck? Well, Don, two major roadways, all in good shape around the area. All the interstates, for the most part, are even dry in spots right now. The ramps and the bridges could be a little tricky here and there, But for the most part, 95, 83, 70 inbound and 75, all looking good. Joining the Beltway just on a report, the JFK inbound is clear and the main line roadway is dry around the 41st Street area. So good news there all the way into the downtown ramps. No problems at the tunnels or at the key bridge and down towards the south and BWI down around to 95 and 195.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920#t=195.67,276.43"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920/transcript/71106/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Good to go. 95 looks good. End of the city towards the 395 ramps. We do have one injury accident in Severna Park on 648 about a half mile south of Mackenzie Road. And it goes without saying again, the secondary roads are really in trouble. Back to you, Don. Thank you, Chuck. We'll be keeping in touch with you all day long with Horse. And we just have heard from another school system in our area, a big one. Baltimore County schools are closed today. Baltimore County schools are closed. We'll add that to our list that we'll run down for you, all of them, in a few minutes or so. Okay. Now, as Marty said, 535, by the way, if you check in the time is what he said. Nothing fell overnight. So the only problem you have out there this morning is what you didn't take care of or what someone else didn't take care of for you yesterday and are on mats or standing out there live once again this morning. And Ron, right today with yesterday, as far as conditions go, one thing right off the bat, Don, it is much, much colder than it was this time yesterday morning. We're at Loch Raven and Joppa, actually just east of Loch Raven and Joppa on Raven Drive and anything that was on the sidewalks, on the pavements, on the parking lots last night, I mean, it's just frozen solid. Photographer Bob Burg Schneider is going to get a look down. Raven Drive here. If you can look at these sidewalks, I mean, I can try to maneuver over, but I'm telling you, it is it's nothing but ice. It's like glass here. We're going to go out to block Raven Boulevard right now. All right. Here we're actually we're on Joppa Road. Now. If you take a look at Joppa Road, it's clear it's in good shape. There's a gentleman running somewhere right now. Where are you going? All right. Good luck to you. I don't know. I don't know if you heard him. He's heading for the bus. Get an early start again this morning. You're going to it's going to take time to get all the the stuff, all the the ice off your car. We have a lot of people warming up their cars already. We now have about 18,000 people who are without power in the Annapolis area, parts of Anne Arundel County and Calvert County, BG. And crews have have extra crews out now. And we're told by a big ENI spokesman it may not be until sometime this afternoon before all that power is back on in the Annapolis and Randall County, Calvert County, P.G. County area. Don and Marty, back to you. It's cold, Ron. I tell you, one minute you may add the example to the picture you've just painted, which was absolutely perfect. Okay. Last night, I've got a four wheel drive and I was doing some running around. And of course, when you warm up the car, all the ice and stuff in the wheel well starts to melt. That's right. Okay. So my car sitting in the driveway right now. Imagine all this water dripping down behind the wheels. My tires were frozen to the ground this morning, and I'm not and this is no lie. And I didn't even try to get my car out because I knew I wouldn't make it okay for the station to send a courier for here and essential personnel this morning. All right. It's it's much colder this morning, guys. Okay. So keep that coffee cup full. Yeah. It's almost ten degrees colder this morning. So it was like 27 this time yesterday and 17 degrees now. Rob, we'll be back to you a bunch here throughout the night and see you. As I was warming up my car, I was shocked when I punched up the car thermometer and it was like 12 and Reisterstown High, 26 today, mostly cloudy skies. Okay. And the day's other news in northeast Baltimore, a one year old boy was killed last night after he was attacked by a pit bull. Police say the baby was mauled to death by the Staffordshire terrier in his Moravia Park area home. He was rushed to Key Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The dog named Rampage belonged to a family friend of the victim's family. It is now in custody of animal control authorities. So far, the name of the child has not been released. The fire broke out just before one this morning in a three alarm, three floor row house in the 1800 block of West Baltimore Street. It took firefighters, it must be East Baltimore Street, took firefighters about 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control. No one was injured. It's believed the cause of the fire was accidental. And some other news. For the first time in 16 years, Baltimore's premier sports team is back on Channel 13. Jay Z. Of course, Orioles baseball is returning here and a multi-year agreement announced yesterday. Group W Television, the parent company of WGN, it's now has the exclusive rights to broadcast all the Oriole games, with the exception of 14 network telecasts. Here's the breakdown on the 148 locally televised games. Channel 13 will carry 30 regular season games, including Opening day and two exhibition games. It's will televise 90 games, 78 regular season games for cable TV subscribers and 12 spring training games. The remainder of the contests will be televised on broadcast TV through a syndication partnership in the Mid Atlantic region. The Emmy Award winning. Announced team of Mal Proctor and John Lowenstein. Lolo is going to be on our air along with veteran sportscaster. Reporter Tom Davis will handle the bulk of the schedule. Excellent. Excellent indeed. Yup. And sticking with sports, All Stars shortstop Cal Ripken received a belated award yesterday for setting yet another record in his impressive baseball career. Back on July 15th, Cal went deep. Roth, Minnesota. Scott Erickson. And that was Ripken's 278th home run as a shortstop. It was not until yesterday we learned the home run gave Cal the most home runs for a shortstop in Major league history. The reason for the belated recognition, it seems Hall of Famer Ernie Banks had been credited with 16 more home runs as a shortstop than he actually hit while playing in that position.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920#t=533.74,642.37"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920/transcript/71106/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"The Elias Sports Service, the official scorekeeper Major League statistics, discovered the error four years ago, but never bothered to inform the Orioles, apparently. So you all be able to remember where that homerun came down. I can only tell you what. And the ultimate honor to Cal Ripken, the ultimate honor. Not so much eclipsing that that that numeric, that that that number. But the fact that Mr. Cub dare some say Mr. Baseball himself, Ernie Banks came to Baltimore, to Oriole Park at Camden Yards to hand him that bat. Unbelievable. I saw that. I saw that last night. And I almost got overwhelmed. And I'll guarantee, if you were really to ask Cal Ripken, you know, what's the what's the biggest deal about his new accomplishment, that he might just darn well say that Ernie Banks stood there and handed me in and handed me a bat and made it. I made a joke about it. I mean, Ernie Banks said, I'm not going to hit you in the knee with his bat. Well, a little, little lot of that going around. Dark humor. But but nonetheless, hey, listen, can we bring in right now the producer of the outstanding news Morning Edition, ladies, gentleman, Mr. Mark Brzezinski. Give him a big round of applause sometimes as Mr. Baseball, I'm sure sometimes known as Mr. Baseball here on Channel 13 Blade. Thank you. 611 And as we have implied this morning, there was no more winter mist falling from the sky overnight. But what was already on the ground has not gone away. Most places for a firsthand look at sidewalk inside street conditions, we go live to Ron, Max and his crew out there. Ron, how's it look? Well, I think you can take a look at this shot right now, Don. This is a car on Raven Drive, a side street just off of Loch Raven and Joba. Take a look at that. How would you like to try to get into that car this morning? You wouldn't. It's a mess. The side streets are. Glazed over, still very treacherous. Just as bad as they were yesterday morning. I don't think there's any question about it. If you're going to go out this morning, please be very, very careful. Side streets still very treacherous. Can't emphasize that enough for you to be able to see that. As I try to make my way onto Joppa Road. And you're going to see the big difference. Side streets are just awful. All right. Here we go. And we're coming out to Joppa Road. And look how clear Joppa Road is this morning. I mean, it's really, really in good shape. You can walk along it fairly well.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920#t=2442.74,2536.64"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920/transcript/71106/annotation/28","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We're down to dry pavement. But once again, the side streets are just a mess. Don And Marty, also a reminder, that power outage in the Annapolis area, we have about 18,000 people still without power in Annapolis, parts of Anne Arundel Calvert and P.G. County. It could be this afternoon before that power is restored. Back to you on TV. Well, you know, that lady might be one example, an example of a caution this morning. A lot of people are walking in the street rather than the sidewalks. So if you're driving, be careful. Yes, sure. Good idea. And you know, another thing, couple of things are we're really lucky with all this ice we've had over the past month, Ron and Don, you know, we have really have a whole lot of limbs come down. I mean, if you think about it, you get these ice storms in the Midwest, you know, all of a sudden, bang, a hundred thousand people without power. Well, that's the big problem in the Annapolis area this morning. A lot of tree limbs are down and that's causing the power outages. They've got extra BGN crews out there doing the best they can. That apparently technically is against the law. I believe you're right, because I did that one time and was stopped by a police officer. Come on. Seriously. Yes, I was. In this morning's Medical minute. A good cry can make you feel better in more ways than just one. Health reporter Sandra Pinkney explains. Good morning, everyone. Remember the song Big Girls Don't Cry. Don't believe it. The next time you feel a good cry coming on, don't try to hold it and let it out. Crying does make you feel a lot better. And it turns out it's not the act of crying itself, but the chemical makeup of the tears that makes you feel better when you cry. Stress hormones are released from the brain and flushed out of your system. After they've been released, you start to feel more relaxed and calm. Now, once you've had that good cry, here's a tip to get rid of those swollen, bloodshot eyes. Hold a cold compress on your eyes while sitting straight up. Don't lie down, because if you do, the blood flows to your head and the swelling and the red eyes can get worse.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920#t=3118.9,3209.59"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136336/file/252920/transcript/71106/annotation/35","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"If you have a health related question, write to me in care of doctor's house called a BJC TV. We will. A new era for the Baltimore Police Department has begun with Commissioner Thomas Frasier promising a shakeup in his forces approach to crime. In his commentary this morning, Michael Lesko says Frazier's too finding himself not only by what he says, but by what he wears. When Commissioner Thomas Frazier held a news conference yesterday, he not only wore a police uniform, but made a point of saying he'd be wearing the uniform more often than a coat and tie. It was sending a pretty good message to his men and women. It said. I'm not a guy sent here to sit in some office and shuffle papers. I'm a cop. It's a noble calling. I expect my officers to feel the same way or find themselves another perfection to a department feeling pretty demoralized by street crime and by increasing criticism of how they handle it. Frazier's uniforms, An important symbol. The new commissioner will make some enemies in the department before he makes a lot of friends. It's the nature of his job and of current problems. But rank and file police officers are funny people. They know the job's tough to begin with. But if they think the people at the top are on their side and understand their troubles, they have a way of rising to the occasion.
