Residents of Hawkins Point are getting a helping hand from the state and moving out of their homes. But all aren't so happy about it. Lisa Campo has that story. Thousands of people visit the aquarium on its birthday. Frank Luber has details. And the bats were swinging at the stadium today and the birds are flying high tonight. Gayle Gardner is highlights of the old Royals match. I'm Rick Long and I'm Frank Luber with Ron Riley on the weather and Gail Gardner with all the sports highlights. For these stories and more. Eyewitness News is coming up next. Good morning. I'm Rick Young. It's just a matter of days before he dies. Those are the words of Eleanor Bell of one of the Baltimore nurses in Moscow tonight with her hunger striking husband, Yuri. This is the second time Elena has traveled to Moscow since her husband started his hunger fast as a protest against the Soviet government for refusing to grant him a visa to emigrate to the United States. I talked with Alina by phone earlier tonight. Eleanor, you told us before you left that you would try to force feed Yuri when you get there. Are you still going to do that? Yes, I attempted to feed him, but he would not resist. But that is, he had no promise regarding his immigration. By the time I left that he would commit suicide. So he cannot tolerate living in the Soviet Union anymore and being separated from his family.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136042/file/252386#t=17.46,271.84"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136042/file/252386/transcript/70792/annotation/2","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"I know. The only thing that's going to be left is the hope that when you retire, that they will allow me to take them to the United States. This has been a long cough. Also says she wants the US government to get involved now since her husband doesn't have much time left. She adds she and Yuri are willing to settle for at least a promise of emigration, even if it takes up to a full year. In Lebanon, reports of continued heavy fighting between the PLO and Israel. Meanwhile, U.S. envoy Philip Habib met with Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon, who says finding a home for the PLO is the major stumbling block to ending the war in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin also announced his support of a US plan to station an international peacekeeping force in Beirut. The fight goes on tonight to reach an agreement between management of USAir and its mechanics. U.S. air flies mainly in the northeastern United States, but their service could be curtailed to just 30% if a settlement is not reached. Less than 500ft away from a proposed landfill. Lisa Ciampa has more. Ronda Jackson was born on Hawkins Point Road, and like most of her neighbors, she greeted the latest news with mixed emotions. The state has come up with $1.5 million to relocate Jackson's family and 22 other families away from its proposed landfill nearby. But for many of the residents, that $1.5 million may not be enough. I really don't think that it's enough that they're going to give us because we're selling much more than just the area who was selling our homes and our heritage. It's not likely the state will offer residents any more than fair market value for their homes. Although residents feared dust pollution. The state has maintained consistently the landfill will not be health hazardous. The bottom line is that we pay them the fair market value. If they agree to that and if they don't agree, they don't have to move. Wouldn't even have considered leaving here if it hadn't been the landfill. Our own position on this is that they really aren't in any jeopardy where they are. I will move if the majority move and if the price is right. But if we price not right, why move if the price isn't right? Hawkins Point residents say they'll fight again to keep the landfill from even opening up. In other words, they'll return to square one. I'm Lisa Shampoo, Channel 13 Eyewitness News. The state Board of Public Works must first approve of the relocation money. The three day anniversary weekend concluded Sunday with a crowd that even aquarium officials did not anticipate. We are right now about at 9000 people, and we're not closing until 9:00 tonight. By closing time, the total was around 11,000. You one day record as admission fees for Sunday only were reduced from 450 to 1 dollars. And after one year, there was no question about it. Frank how to reduce crime is a prime concern, and many are leaning toward mandatory prison terms as a method. But a new study prepared for the Justice Department is out and reports that doesn't necessarily work. The study examined the reductions of certain crimes in New York and Massachusetts that now have mandatory sentences for those crimes. But researchers say the reductions could have been due to other factors. The findings are not necessarily those of the Justice Department. Last spring, you'll recall, prisoners in an Arundel County planted Christmas trees on eight acres of county landfill.
