Good morning, Brenda. Hi. Good morning, Tim and Katie. I'm in Columbia where the early bird can really get some great Beanie Baby bargains here at the Columbia antique market. And I'm Katie Lyon. 8:00 straight up. Thanks for joining us this morning. It's going to be a very nice day after we get past the haze. Take a look right outside. Now we go down to Hazy Hamden, as they've been calling it this morning. Our neighbors just to the east. It is just a hazy day. Even have some patchy fog out and about as we're driving in. I saw some of that myself coming in from Baltimore County. And basically it's just going to be a nice day. Very typical of summer and very much like yesterday. A little hazy, very sticky. Humidity is in the forecast, certainly in full force right now. Humidity is like almost 90%. And it's going to be that way for the rest of the day as we go approaching temperatures of about 92 degrees. Take a look at first warning radar. You'll see, though, that there are no showers really in the forecast. You see some ground clutter there just around the bay. That's to be expected. That will burn off by midday. No showers right now anywhere around. Now, with that said, take a look at our forecast for today. As we said, 74 degrees here in TV Hill. Look for temperatures to get up to about 92. We got up to 90 yesterday. The possibility of thunderstorms will come into play later this afternoon.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057#t=171.02,257.709"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057/transcript/71183/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Into this evening. Tonight, no real rain in the forecast, but the clouds will be here. We dip down only to about 72. And today, just to keep in mind, temperatures a little warmer. The air quality is moderate to poor. So if you have any problems, you know, keep that in mind. But of course, we have a complete first warning forecast in just about seven minutes. All right. But first, here's the top story of the morning. It may have been a smooth takeoff, but the landing was one big splash for three people aboard a small plane near Kent Island shortly after takeoff last night, the plane crashed into the Chesapeake Bay. We can team's Brenda Karl was on the scene just after the accident. We were standing on the second floor balcony of a friend's house and heard a plane taking off. And as we looked off to the side, it was quite obvious that something was not right. The plane was far too low, was hardly off the ground. And that is it got over the water is belly flop spun out and that huge splash. Two of the passengers had no scratches. Luckily, one person had a pretty good bump on the forehead. And this eyewitness says he and her friend tried to rescue the three passengers on board the aircraft just after it crash landed into the shallow water just a few yards offshore. It was a single engine, four passenger mooney aircraft. It was occupied by a pilot and two passengers. The plane began to lose power as we near the end of the runway and we couldn't stop. The plane went about 100 yards out into the water. Immediately began to swing. State police say the three people on board the plane suffered minor injuries and refused treatment.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057#t=258.22,344.17"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057/transcript/71183/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"For now, the plane will stay in the water until the FAA arrives at the scene tomorrow to investigate the cause of the crash. Okay. Certainly. Well, a police officer working at a local concert is hit by a tour bus, not the group's tour bus. But it did happen last night after the Jimmy Buffet concert at the Merriweather Post Pavilion. We're told that the Howard County police officer, whose name has not yet been released, was not seriously injured. However, he was taken to a local hospital to be checked out by doctors. We'll keep you posted on his condition. Baltimore County police continue their investigation into a shooting at the Tall Trees apartment complex in Essex. They say a security guard shot and killed a man Friday. Police say the trouble began when 23 year old William Simmons walked up to two guards standing near their cars and said he wanted a ride. He then allegedly got into one of the cars and accelerated the car, pinned one of the guards who shot Simmons in the shoulder. He was pronounced dead at the scene. So far, no charges have been filed. The guard's name has not been released. A 15 year old Harvard County boy remains in hospital this morning after being shot at his home. Well, this is the second time in recent days that a child has been shot in our area. Just last week, 13 year old Baltimore County boy was killed by gunfire. There are some inexpensive ways to try to protect your children and possibly save a life. It is a tragedy police say could have been prevented. 13 year old John Joseph Pryce shot in the head while playing with a gun with friends in a white marsh home. Maryland state law says any adult who fails to keep a gun away from a child can be charged with a misdemeanor. Police are still trying to decide whether to press charges against the gun owner in the white Bart shooting. Unfortunately, the incident that happened in White Marsh is not a unique situation. Nancy Fenton, executive director of Marylanders Against Handgun Abuse, is urging gun owners to buy locks and alarms for their weapons and to be more aware of just how deadly a gun can be in the hands of a child. We'd like to see parents become very responsible with their handguns. It's as simple as locking up that gun, making sure it is unloaded and keeping it out of the reach of the child, their children. Nationwide statistics show nearly 200 children are killed every year in accidents involving handguns. The locks range in price from 11 to $80. A small cost to pay when a child's life is at stake. And if you'd like more information on handgun safety, you can call Marylanders Against Handgun abuse.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057#t=438.82,530.88"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057/transcript/71183/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And the number is (412) 889-0477. Well, as children prepare to head back to school, of course, safety is a big concern. And with that in mind, immunizations protect children from various illnesses. And after the outages and tears, children were treated to music and a show. Orioles fans have plenty to smile about this morning. The birds stop a two game slide with a winning combination of strong offense and defense. And it looked like it was going to be a frustrating afternoon for the hometown fans when B.J. Strife sent a ball over the wall, only to have it caught, as you see here, for an out. But Scott Erickson pitched his ninth complete game of the season with the help of quick defensive moves. And he was able to limit the Indians to three runs, thanks to Cal Ripken's 11th home run of the season, a two run blast. The Orioles came away winner 6 to 3. That was the same score as the day before. Same two teams this afternoon right here on Jay Z. And yes, Boston lost last night. So the birds are only now seven back in the wild card race, which is good news. So we beat them. We beat them finally. I wish we could have beaten them last year in the series race, but yeah. Wow. Dover and 72, Richmond and Washington are the hot spots, 76 in Richmond, 74 in Washington, with Hagerstown in Frederick, both reporting temperatures right around 68 degrees. Charlie, Charlie has made landfall, of course, this time yesterday, it was a tropical storm. Charlie is expected to just move off to the west of Texas into Mexico by later today. Most of that is burning off as the temperatures start to climb when the sun comes out, do have some shower activity that moved on through the southern portion of PA that has since moved off offshore. As anti-American sentiment boiled over amid the wreckage of a supposed chemical weapons plant in Sudan. Word was getting to the White House. The other attack, some 2500 miles away in northern Afghanistan, had had similar results. Each of the six can sustain some level of damage. And the assessment at this point is it's likely to be moderate to severe in each case. That would, officials say, significantly disrupt any terrorist training at the base and may hinder future attacks, but not stop them. At the Washington Monument, one of the most recognizable tourist spots in the world. Barricades are going up. No one is taking any chances. They are going to continue to do what they do and they're going to continue to threaten Americans. And they will very likely at some point take more lives. And we are well aware of that and doing everything we can to protect Americans from that threat.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057#t=1214.56,1302.43"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057/transcript/71183/annotation/14","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Although the whereabouts of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden are still a mystery, the president is moving to hit them again. This time, there's no map coordinate needed for the attack. The target is bin Laden's oversize wallet. I have just signed an executive order directing the Treasury to block all financial transfer transactions between the bin Laden terrorist group and American persons and companies. It takes money, lots of it, to build a network bin Laden has. We'll do our best to see that he has less of it. Senior administration officials admit that the move probably won't have any immediate dramatic effect. There aren't a lot of US assets that the bin Laden organization has access to to begin with. But it is part of a multi-pronged approach. Might and muscle, combined with the power of the purse strings, just might work over a long period of time. Lee Cowan, CBS News. Martha's Vineyard. And this morning, a new CBS New York Times poll finds 70% of the people asked support the US attacks in Afghanistan and Sudan. The scars are still healing in Northern Ireland this morning after last week's deadly bombing. Tens of thousands of Protestants and Catholics gathered at the site of the blast yesterday to remember the hundreds of people killed and hurt in the worst act of terrorism in Northern Ireland's history. Leaders are hoping that a real, lasting peace will come from that terrible violence. Well, that's who's been telling you this morning. All eyes are on Hurricane Bonnie as she gathers strength. So if you want fruit that's tasty and good for you, it makes sense to spend the extra cents on pink grapefruit. I'm Kelly Lin eating right. That's good to know. Thanks, Kelly. Now let's get over to him and his special guest this morning. Well, thank you, Katie. Well, Eric Herald, Chris Karl, they're all a few of the names of the Orioles hitters that have exploded at the plate during the second half of the season. And if we name everyone, of course, we just run out of time. So we're going to cut to the chase. And the man responsible for a lot of this surge is O's hitting coach Rick down. And he joins us live in our studio. First of all, congratulations for the surge. And thanks for being here. It's an early morning for you. You said you usually are at the park by now, about 830. Right. Wow. So thanks for taking a detour. Not a problem. So tell us, first off, this has been a remarkable turnaround from the first part of the season to the second. What have you done to help kind of boost these guys into kicking it into gear? I wish I could say everything, but unfortunately, if you have good hitters, you're a good hitting coach. And that's the bottom line. It's been a good team. It has been a good team. You expected us to play this way? Unfortunately, the first half wasn't like we expected, but we're starting to come on and hopefully we're not too far behind.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057#t=1617.36,1699.72"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057/transcript/71183/annotation/18","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Boston, they lost last night, which was nice. And we're seven games behind with 37 games to play. We played Boston six times. It would be nice to get that number under six, right? Then we'd have control of our own destiny. But we are a good club and that's why we're hitting well. And I guess that's the simplest way to say without saying it was all me, because of course it is. Okay. Well, a large part of this is I'll be too modest, but I know consistency is one of the big, big things when you're talking about keeping the guys winning and you can't talk about consistency unless you talk about Cal Ripken. And he just crossed another milestone. What does that mean? To have a player may be the all time hitting leader in a ball club. It means you showed up to the ballpark and he comes on time. He and he works here. You one of the few players that every day takes his work, does his work, prepares them, and they say, we'll take a day off. You still do his work in terms of the preparation that's extensive for Cal to get any benefit to take a day off, you'd have to give him 4 or 5 days off and say not show up to the ballpark entirely. Then you might get some of the benefits, but basically prepares itself the same way every every day. And that's why he's had so much success. It's the preparation and that's why major league ballplayers have success when they hit field pitch, whatever it might be. It's the preparation behind the scenes that people don't see, and then they go to the ballpark. They make it look so easy. And for instance, in the hitting portion of it, 70% of the time you're going to fail.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057#t=1700.14,1780.09"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057/transcript/71183/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"But yet everybody that does that is hitting 300. They're considered a success. But the fans in general want you to succeed 100% of the time. So it makes it difficult and they make it look easy, but in actuality is very, very difficult thing to do. Now, of course, the two run homer yesterday and he, according to what you would teach a little leaguer, does everything, does the opposite. He tinkers with his his stance a lot. Bat lays on his shoulder a lot. Talk about his swing. Why You know, why does he consistently hit even though he changes around a little bit? Well, let's use the analogy of handwriting. Everybody's handwriting is a little different. But you crush, you teach you that your eyes there's certain absolutes in hitting. And if you look where Cal goes when he finishes the stride and that's important. The hands are back, he's back and he's seen the ball well. You have a chance and that's what you want to teach the Lakers to make sure that you're in a good hitting position and that you can see the ball because all good hitters swing at good pitches. And the better the pitcher you pitch, you swing it, the better chance you have to hit. And I'm a firm believer that pitchers throw home runs as hitters. We don't hit it. We hit the mistakes. But you got to put yourself in a position to take advantage of those mistakes. And that's what Cal does. You don't go to the plate umpiring by no means. And you say, is this a good pitch? Is this a bad pitch? We expect everybody, a good pitcher to hit and we're going to hit until we take and we keep that aggressive attitude.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057#t=1780.39,1852.9"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057/transcript/71183/annotation/20","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"And if you'll notice, with any rallies that the Orioles have is generally a walk that sustains that rally and then you get a base hit. But there's no defense against the walk. But the bottom line is not one through nine. Our players are playing with a lot more confidence. They don't feel like one man has got to carry the team and that if somebody has to take the base, some balls are passed on down and the next Cal has success and if he doesn't, it'll be the next guy. So it's that confidence you see in the lineup. There's people on base ahead here. There's people behind you. They're going to hit eventually that pitcher runs out of places to put somebody and they throw you a pitch that you can hit. And we're taking advantage of that. That was the point I was going to ask you. I mean, it's difficult to pitch around anybody when you know that the next guy in the rotation might knock it out of the park, just like the one you just faced. But talk about talk to us about Eric Davis. Now. He just finished a streak that was phenomenal. He's on a great run, ended that one and almost started another one right away. What is a guy like that doing that's just so consistent all the time? Eric Davis brings you good pitches and he has a lot of fun at what he does. I don't think anybody ever realizes reach his potential until they have a lot of fun. And if you'll notice, Eric is always bouncing around the ballpark, raising the roof. It's just not showing up at five after seven, standing there for the national anthem and we're going to play a 735 or 135 ballgame. There's a lot of preparation involved even for a major leaguer. Sounds good. And I guess you can see that with the catchers. You know, those guys are not normally known for being power hitters, but now you have one going to the Hall of Fame for hitting two Grand Slams. Of course, Chris Hoiles in last week's game, 2 in 1 game. And he's going, I guess that you work with those guys, too. I mean, they certainly put in their time. And what we want to we're going to be ramping up, of course, but we'd be remiss if I didn't mention that since the All-Star break, you've been growing a mustache and we hear from inside sources that that's one of the reasons that the team turned it around. Some of the different tie teddy bears and stuffed animals. A lot of collectors are turning out today and bargaining and trying to get one of their best prices for the Beanie Babies. Christine Lias is here selling Beanie Babies. Tell me, what what are the most popular ones? People are asking about the glory bear. Why's the owl? We got wise. Katy were asking about that and whispers down here. And the princess. And Princess and Aaron. So let me tell you, if you've been going to card stores or other places to get your beanies, definitely check out an antique. So if you get a chance and this one in Colombia is going to go all day, so bring your checkbook or like Katie said, some cold, hard cash. Katie, back to you. Okay. Let's get some prices here. How much for whisper? How much for whisper? Whisper is 12, $12. So these are the new ones and they're hard to get. And some of them we haven't even seen before. Well, tomorrow night is the Ravens second preseason game at their brand new stadium. And the MTA is ready for you to leave the driving to them. Diana Ross Perot, deputy administrator of the MTA, is here to share their new and improved game plan. Thanks for joining us this morning. Good morning. Okay. First of all, explain what the problem was at the Bears game. Sure. Quite simply, too many people decided to ride light rail. Light rail has the capacity issue. There are only a certain number of people that we can have on light rail. And the video that you're seeing now is exactly what happened, where you had 13,000 fans at one time trying to get on board that light rail train. And no transportation system can really handle what we saw on that day. And that's what happened with the with the delays. Okay. So what's the improvement then that we're going to see tomorrow? The improvement hopefully is in the fans hand and that we are hoping that the 5000 extra fans that we had on light rail, that they will decide to actually shift over to our express busses. Busses give us a lot more flexibility. We can simply add busses. We've got about 300 busses that we plan to put on the street on Monday and hopefully we will carry as many as 14,000 fans. We have the capacity to carry that many fans and we're hopeful that fans decide to ride the busses. And if you live along the light rail line, light rail is for you. If you don't live along the line, express busses will be for you. Okay. Most people know where the light rail stations are. Where are the busses going to be? Where can you pick them up? Sure.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057#t=2895.95,2976.93"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/136473/file/253057/transcript/71183/annotation/32","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"We have a map that shows exactly where the busses are, but there are actually nine different locations that we we have to do the express busses. We've added two no to new locations. One is at Chauhan Road, which is just off the near the Hutt Valley Mall. There's the map there. Our new location is Chuan Road near the Hunt Valley Mall will have as many as 35 busses there to help fans board the busses. In addition, we have another location at Polly Western, which is just off 83 near Cold Spring Lane. Again, that's an additional park and ride location. In addition to that, we have locations at the Anne Arundel County Community College. We have Carnie, we have Essex, we have the Southwest Park and Ride Lot. We have Whitemarsh, which is one of the most popular lots that we have. So we have park and ride locations all around the region and we have as many again as 300 busses for people to ride. So we're hopeful that people will decide to ride these busses. What about the Times? Are they on a certain schedule where people need to know what time to be there? Sure. The busses, the busses begin running at least three hours before every game. So at 430, those busses will be out there. The map that you should see now actually shows some of the capacity issues that we have. We had a capacity of 8000 on light rail, yet 13,000 people decided to ride. That put us on overload at 5000. We're hopeful that we shipped those people over to the busses. The capacity on busses gives us as many as 14,000. It's like your own personal personal bus. And then they'll unload and go back to the site. Exactly. How often are they running, do you think? Is it every 45 minutes or. No, It's just as frequently as people are there. Again, we have as many as 35 at some locations. So by the time one bus gets down, there's another bus already there waiting for them. So when they're there, they will actually see a bus. The last bus will leave right when the game begins. Okay. Just if you decide that you want to take the bus or the light rail, do that. It started as a typical Sunday morning service at Arlington Baptist Church. But as members left the sanctuary, they received some shocking news. They are looking for this woman, 41 year old Nancy Ellen Finicky. As you mentioned, Pat, she was last seen by her 15 year old son around 11:00 last night. She, according to police and according to her son, was sitting in a chair and she'd been suffering from some kind of an illness. When the family woke up this morning, she was gone. She did not take her car. They don't believe she had any shoes on. And they're not exactly sure what she was dressed in because no one saw her again. And since 11:00 last night, coming back to me. Now, if we can, I'll explain the rest of the story. This is what we believe, at least according to police, Harford County Sheriff's Department had happened. There is a belief that perhaps she wandered off into the woods. So right now, this massive rescue effort is being concentrated out into the wooded area. I did talk with Ed Hopkins, part of the Hartford County Sheriff's Department. This is what he lets me know at this point. There is no indication of any foul play with inside of her home, nor is there any indication that Mrs. Panicky, Nancy Allen Panicky would have just left her home. So that's what we know at this point. So right now, they believe 1 or 2 things could have happened. They believe that she could have wandered off into the woods because, again, she had been feeling ill but wasn't taking medication. The other possibility is that someone could have come to her door and she could have been in a disoriented state and perhaps she went away. What we know is that 19 year old Tirico Wells shot and killed himself tonight. But in terms of how we may have received other gunshot wounds, well, there are different versions. After the final shot. Everybody just just heard a whole bunch of scream. They were screaming because they had just witnessed a shooting. Dozens were at the Bay Ridge Apartments in Annapolis and say two Rico wells was shot by police. Police say they didn't shoot him at all. And some kids saw I mean, I went I saw my little cousins. They saw the horror ended in the same place where it began. Number five, binge drive. Police say 19 year old Tirico Wells was holed up inside. They say he came out with a gun and wouldn't drop it. I seem to recall staying out there in the street over there. But then he saw the shooting and then they were shooting back. And then after that, they shot him. And after they shot him, he was sitting in the building over there and they was trying to negotiate his friends and stuff his friend over. He was trying to negotiate with. But no amount of negotiating would work. Moments later to Rico Wells, put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. We came outside with the gun to his head and then he walked down the street. At at least a dozen people in the Bay Ridge apartment complex say they saw police shoot to Rico Wells before. Mr. Wells then took his own life by putting a gun to his head. Police are saying at this hour they did not shoot Mr. Wells. It's probably going to take the medical examiner's office to determine if he has any other gunshot wounds other than the one that was self-inflicted. Pat. Well, Kai, how did the police get involved with Wells to begin with? Well, we understand that someone in the area for some unknown reason, called police on Mr. Wells. Now, as you heard in our story, the last gentleman mentioned that Mr. Wells had been in jail recently and apparently didn't want to go back in jail. Whether or not that had anything to do with why police were called, we're not exactly certain. But for some reason or another, according to all of the witnesses we spoke with tonight, he was distraught over something. Mr. Wells didn't have any known address. We understood he lived with relatives in the area. And, of course, we'll have more for you as the story develops. Thanks, Kyra. It's good to see you back on the weekend. There hadn't been a whole lot of change in this storm system in the last, six hours or so, 115 mile an hour winds gust to 140. But the movement right now, 0 to 5 miles an hour. We think it's going to start moving a little bit more over the next few hours, but that's a little difficult bet right now. We'll take another view of this, showing how its impact is expected to play into the southeastern part of the United States here. And there is Bonnie there right behind our symbol. Now, I think probably the best bet for our area down in Ocean City right now would be to plan on high surf conditions long about midweek. Now, of course, we'll be watching this. And other than Bonnie, we've already reviewed her situation here. We have a typical summertime weather circulation pattern. And this is a warm, humid, tropical air mass heat, humidity over our area down through the southeast continues all the way out into the central part of the country. Relief is expected eventually at the end of the five day period as this front pushes down. But the interaction of that with Bonnie midweek period is very, very uncertain and very undecided right now. One thing we are for sure, though, tomorrow morning or tomorrow during the day, going to be another day, rather like today. Orioles driving the wild card stalled by Don Gooden and the Cleveland Indians. Orioles were unable to get much of anything going offensively and dropped the rubber game of three game series 4 to 1. This has been a series, remember for Kenny Lofton. Friday night, Lofton will go way over the wall to rob Roberto Alomar and Cleveland 6 to 3 win. Today there was two on for Mike Burdick, who represented the tying run up blast to center field. Lofton, with a long run back to the wall bangs into it and holds on Cleveland That would be the last chance the Orioles had against Cleveland. They got the Sidney Ponson in the first. Travis Fryman will send a ground ball. It'll skip just inside the line and pass the dive. And Cal Ripken, Omar Vizquel and Manny Ramirez score making it a two to nothing game. Gooden was able to pitch six and one third innings, held the Orioles to one run on four hits, struck out to Tribe, wins it, 4 to 1. Gooden Improving to six and six. And now Gooden wins using the cerebral approach. I think now I just have to rely more on location and can hear the hitters. It's not that you took a game for granted, you know, early in my career, but now it's time to study more. So they don't look at their records and try to figure out their weaknesses. And hopefully that'll help, you know, cause my benefit goes. Just when the Orioles looked like they were gaining some momentum in the wild card chase, they slipped back eight games behind Boston.
