The only Maryland senator ever expelled from office prepares to go to court in Annapolis. And some people are already preparing for Hurricane Floyd. Eyewitness News exclusive. First warning weather will track the storm for you. And Brenda, Carl is tracking down some shopping deals this morning. Brenda, where are you? Hey, good morning. Well, it's the second Sunday of the month. Bells point is the place to be, and I'll explain that coming up next on WG Eyewitness News. Live from WJC 13. You've got Baltimore as fever of news team now. I witnessed the. And good morning, everyone. On Team Williams. We are approaching 60 degrees this morning and it's 8:00. Thanks for joining us. I'm Katie Lyon. Hey, talking about a brisk start, we talked about it yesterday and another yeah, another carbon copy day of yesterday. Oh, it feels good, actually. It's good. It's good sleeping weather, able to kind of kind of snuggle in and pull the blankets over your head. And no heat. No air. You don't need anything. It's very neutral, very nice outside. And that could change by this time next week. We could be going from, you know, sunglasses to duck shoes to an arc. Oh, no. Yeah, we Floyd is, of course, a hurricane. We'll have an update on him at 8:00. So I'm going to go check in just a few seconds. Floyd is a Category two, possibly. The National Weather Service is updating eight at eight. Now, they were expecting to do it within about ten minutes or so of the time we went on the air. And our Floyd right now has sustained winds possibly of up to 130 miles an hour. And that's going to be coming our way. So we will, of course, look at that in a complete first when we forecast, we'll take a look outside, which is what we're talking about. Harbor looks very, very nice. This is what our buddy Marty calls Spaghetti Junction. All the inner loops and, you know, the intersections of the highway out there just near Camden Yards coming in from 95 and three, 95 and all around that whole loop there. But you can see how clear it is. No haze, no clouds, no rain of precipitation, no humidity. And that's a good thing. It'll make for a wonderful Sunday for anything you plan on doing. Take a look at our forecast as a shapes up. We're looking at sunny skies today. Cool start, as we said, 58 degrees in downtown Baltimore. 82 is our forecast high down to 60 tonight. All clear skies. Air quality is moderate. And as you see, 59 here on TV here. So we'll have a complete first 20 forecast and a look at Floyd in just about ten minutes. Okay. But first, let's take a look at what people are talking about this morning. Police say a father admits to killing his two toddlers as they rode in his jeep strapped into their car seats. He told his estranged wife he was taking their children. Richard the third and Destiny Speck now on a trip to Ocean City. Instead, police say he shot them at close range. State police tell Eyewitness News as of this morning, there is no sign of the alleged murder weapon. Richard Speck now is accused of the unthinkable, killing his own children. How could a parent commit such a horrible crime? It's a question on a lot of people's minds this morning. How and why. Eyewitness News went in search of the answer to that question. Chris Warrant knows the mental and financial challenges of raising two children, but he can't understand what could possibly push a parent like Richard signal to kill his kids. You have an option of taking a minute and taking a breather and going outside and clearing your head or, you know, letting the situation get the best of you. And I think that's probably what happened. We've seen it happen too many times. Susan Smith's two children drown, still strapped into their car seats when she pushed the car into a lake like Richard Speck. Now, she, too, first claimed the children had been taken in a carjacking. But just what is it that pushes a parent over the edge to commit such a horrific crime? I asked a local psychologist just what it takes to turn a mom or a dad into a killer. It depends, really, on the issue of motive. In one set of circumstances, you have somebody with a very deranged mental status who's so out of touch with reality that they don't really appreciate the wrongness of what they're doing. And in those instances, it's just very cold blooded, very matter of fact, complete indifference to the welfare of the children. No concern that they're that you're stealing their lives from them, things like that. No one knows why Richard's Becnel allegedly killed his kids. We do know he had filed for bankruptcy in May, was unemployed and had been ordered to pay $500 a month in child support. There was a protective order issued against him after a physical altercation last December. And at this College park pawnshop, just two weeks before the killings, he allegedly bragged about his dad being a former Baltimore city police officer as he bought the alleged murder weapon. Dr. McGee says any domestic abuse should be taken very, very seriously. In a lot of these domestics, every member of the family is fair game. The children, the spouse, it doesn't matter who gets in the way. The person is enraged. They want vengeance. They want to get back. They're having all kinds of financial problems trying to pay off child support. And they decide foolishly decide that the solution here is to just kill everybody on. Very frightening. The Howard County Sheriff's Department says it has no idea why the Speck mills name disappeared from its computers. And I apologize for it. It was totally unintentional. I'll campaign in a where we are focused. There's been a number of dirty tricks happening in the other campaigns, but we have not commented on them all year. I won't start today. The Afro-American says it wants to clear up any confusion these ads may have caused. Some polls indicate a lot of voters remain undecided at this point. Yeah, if you live in Baltimore City, you have two days to sort through the issues and make a choice. The winner of the Democratic primary is really considered a shoo in for mayor. And certainly the winner takes a look at what's ahead for the person who wins. Many would argue there still plenty of charm and charm City, but people who work and live in Baltimore say there are some fundamental issues that need attention from the next mayor. First on the list is crime. Parents are fed up with letting their children play on the same corners where drug dealers are doing business. Now neighborhoods are fighting back. We're basically looking to keep the. Drug dealers moving right now. Everyone knows who we are, basically. So when they see us coming, they move. The drug dealers aren't the only ones making a move. You can't live in Baltimore City, All right. If you put your kids in private school, if you have to pay the property taxes that we pay, if you have to have everything secure and wired up. And so somewhere there's a tradeoff. You know, I'm not going to go to the board. And the tradeoff Baltimore City parents will tell you is their children and the education provided by Baltimore's public school system. Many parents are fighting back, creating their own winning system, but they say the city needs help. I'm tired of hearing mayors talk the talk. I want to see them walk the walk. I want the mayor to be a bridge between communities, between businesses, and definitely with education on top. Many of the people who spoke to us for this story will be joining us live in our living room on primary night. But rookie Eugene Kingsdale sealed the deal with this two run single in the eighth to make it a four for two win for the Orioles and the team. Two teams play today at the yard at 135. All right. Along the shoreline, 57 and Atlantic City's 56. An ocean city. And then pretty much around the region, around the Beltway, everyone waking up to nice, comfortable temperatures just under the 60 degree mark, 57 in Glen Burnie, 59 in Annapolis, 56 in Bel Air and 57 in Columbia. This is the picture, the way it affects us right now. Open this up and show you how it includes Floyd in a second. But this is it. Very, very nice. Mild air to our south. Our winds are from the southeast this afternoon. So even with that change, winds coming in from the Gulf, we're not going to see very much humidity. It's very dry. The air is very cool and a very comfortable 82 is what we were expecting. But look down in the corner and you see this. That is the outskirts of Floyd. Let's look at the the map now and give you an idea on what's going on. Floyd is right now just about 300 miles to the north east of San Juan, and there is now a hurricane watch in effect for the Bahamas, the central Bahamas. Floyd is moving a lot quicker than Dennis was. Floyd is moving at just about 13 miles an hour. Dennis kind of floated around out there at just about now, seven and stayed still. Floyd is moving. We'll give you give you the breakdown. Latitude 22 nine North. If you're following this at home, longitude is 66 west, moving it west northwest at 13mph. And as we promised, we updated this. Floyd is now a Category three hurricane, which makes it a major hurricane. And they expected the National Weather Service expects it to increase before it's all over with two, possibly a 4 or 5 by midweek because the waters are still out there so warm. Now, sustained winds of 110 gusting to 135. So Floyd is certainly something we're going to be watching. Still no real determination of where it may go, but certainly that is heading for the states. And we'll know that by mid-week, Wednesday or Thursday or so. So right now, just know that today we're looking at a bright, dry, calm day high of about 82 tonight, very clear, talking about calm winds with a very cool night low of only about 58.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115853/file/219728#t=759.96,859.5"},{"id":"https://marmia.aviaryplatform.com/collections/948/collection_resources/115853/file/219728/transcript/62486/annotation/10","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Katie will take a look at the ocean, the bay conditions on the water for those boaters still stretching out the summer season. Dennis Edwards reports. The Afro-American says he's one of the most outspoken, active and conscientious elected officials. Afro editor in chief Anthony McCarthy says it had to be intentional. We find we're very disappointed in the O'Malley campaign for doing this. But the effort will not be used that way. We certainly don't want the African-American community to be confused in any way. More than two weeks ago, the Afro Baltimore's oldest black newspaper endorsed Carl Stokes for mayor. McCarthy says the weekly phone started ringing off the hook when the quote appeared. Eyewitness News caught up with O'Malley during a candidate's forum at the Church of the Holy Trinity. The bottom of it right here, it says, also endorsed by League of Environmental Voters, which kind of in the context of it and puts it in the middle, I can see why they would think that. And I apologize for it. It was totally unintentional. Stokes isn't surprised by the ad or community reaction. Our campaign has stayed where we are focused. There's been a number of dirty tricks happening in the other campaigns, but we have not commented on them all year. I won't start today. Stokes, O'Malley, Lawrence Bell and Mary Conaway made time to try and win support from members of Delta Sigma Theta. Delta is a predominantly black service sorority with deep community roots. Thousands of people are joining Martin O'Malley to make Baltimore a better place for everyone. A father, an energetic leader. O'Malley has a real plan to improve public schools, make our streets safer, and bring this city together. If they hear Martin O'Malley integrity, energy and commitment. Well, he was going to make a change. You have to be our there. Well, you've heard the saying music soothes the soul. Well, and her years ahead report this morning, Leona Morris shows us it also may help the aging process. A new twist to healthy aging for those who have music talent is to join a chamber music group. Chapter eight A Con a health educator finds that using music is a good medicine. I observed many older people and by older I mean 70s and 80s who seemed very vital and they played musical instruments. Dr. Khan, in her study, found that chamber music groups proved very popular. It can be a diversion if I'm worried about something. Also, arts and intellectual stimulation because of the challenge of new music. If a senior is moving, music can be a magic door opener for a new friend. Also, if they move to a retirement community, they have a talent and ability and attract other people with similar interests. There are always social directors who start bridge clubs or exercise groups, and to contact that person and say, I would love to play chamber music. I'm sure there are other musicians. Could you also start that group? There is pleasure in the music, but there are also physical and mental benefits. They have goals and challenges and they enjoy a sense of mastery, which doesn't always happen when people get into their 70s and 80s. In the book, Dr. Kahn wrote, There are many studies that support her ideas, and Morita can testify to that. That helps me center myself as an individual. It's relaxation. It's challenge. There's always something new to do tomorrow and never runs dry. There's a certain agility that you derive from playing and and also you derive some flexibility. Leona Morris is The Eyewitness News. Nice day for your office. Let me show you what's going on from the satellite view, looking down from above. And we do have a ridge of high pressure that has been firmly in control all through the weekend. And that's what brought us to virtually cloudless skies and certainly no threat of any precip and plenty of sunshine, actually. Maybe a little late season sunburn was in the offing. Temperatures right now very pleasant, 62 degrees here on TV Hill and generally from, say, 60 to 70 degrees across the region. And pretty much everybody with cloudless skies are very few areas of local cloudiness showing up anywhere across the entire mid-Atlantic region. Right now, it's heading due west in this direction, but most likely will turn toward the north. How strongly is just a matter of conjecture at this point? Once again, with these systems, a matter of watching it over the next few days slowly creeping in our direction, this frontal system and it looks like about midweek, maybe into Wednesday and Thursday, bringing us a chance of some thunder shower activity developing as that thing gradually inches its way into the region. Until then, though, pretty nice conditions for the near future. Clear skies tonight. Calm comfortably cool. Overnight low in the upper 50s. And for tomorrow, start out your workweek with a good deal of sunshine, blue skies, maybe a few clouds, maybe a few more clouds in today, but a nice Monday. All in all, 82 degrees.
